Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Delayed! nooOOooOooo "Due to operating conditions, your package may be delayed. / delivery will be rescheduled."

I hope these UPS guys are delivering on Saturdays now. Most of the year anything late on Friday gets pushed back to Monday.
Just got a notice from UPS. The game said it was going to be delivered today but got changed to Monday... Monday! Not even Saturday.
This happened to me too =( UPS should at least delivery it on saturday when it's their fault :headache:

Luckily it's not out of the way for me to go to BB, but they didn't have any CE in store, so I spoke to a manager and they said I could return it even if it's opened (I'm sure being elite plus helped...). So I picked up a standard version to play which I'll just return after my CE arrives. Saturday off from work saved.

Stupid UPS lol.  Mine got delayed to Monday as well.  But my standard copy (also delayed) was shipped using FedEx and the estimated delivery is tomorrow (Saturday).  So FedEx will deliver Saturday but not UPS?  I wanted the CE ;_;

Monday for me as well, but I don't have a Switch

The Switch is finally hitting it's stride, and it only took 9 months.  It has been pretty impressive.  There are several great games on the system already and any JP gaming enthusiast would want to own one.  Mario and Zelda have already entered the pantheon of greatest games of all-time.   There's a ravenous cult following of fans looking to buy just about anything the Switch puts out, for convenience factor.  Graphical limitations have proven to be a complete non-factor once again.

Six months ago we had a bunch of vocal Switch detractors in here.  I wonder how they feel about it now.

I know you guys are bitching about Best Buy but.. I literally got two gift cards in two shipments, and both came in boxes. One was like a 12x10x4 box.

Nintendo came out swinging with the Switch in a way I certainly didn't expect them to. I didn't think their lack of marketing and March (I think) launch date would bode well for a console at all - especially for the follow up to the Wii U catastrophe. However their first year lineup has been fantastic and I'm happy to see Ninty in full stride again.

I still don't like the Switch (underpowered, no achievement system) but I'd put Nintendo above Microsoft right now. At least Nintendo has some recent worthwhile exclusives that interest me. MS has the biggest cannon but no shells as far as I'm concerned.

I basically got a Switch for Xenoblade 2 so hopefully it's not a disappointment as I certainly won't be buying any multiplatform games on Switch. I'll be getting Metroid whenever it comes out though and hopefully there will be another Zelda during the Switch's lifespan.

I think that's probably the *best* thing they could have done and I'd wager that you'll see this more in the future. Consoles always sell out at launch, so why only put it out during the "biggest shopping season?" Put it out early, and let your early adopters be your marketing. Give yourself some time to get a few more titles into the pipeline and by the time the "biggest shopping season" comes around, you've got some word of mouth going for you as well as a decent "introductory" lineup. I think the way things have played out shows it's a good theory.

That said, the Switch still aint for me, even though I have young (7-9) kids. The tablet mode is as much a demerit as a plus for me as I have no desire to regulate fights between who gets to use the tablet mode. Also, the joy cons pricing seems exploitative. So my kids will be playing a PS4 this Christmas. They can go over to the neighbors' house to get their "Arms" fix. :whistle2:

Yeah, the NS is for sure not for young kids in mind unless you want to buy several. Which at it's current pricing, ain't happening for most. The 2DS/3DS are for sure their go to items for younger kids, and budget priced to boot. You could get 3-4 systems for the NS price, as well as a HUGE library of cheap games to be had.

Having finally tried the NS, I really like the hardware, but the library is still pretty blah for me personally. Some solid titles for sure, but nothing I need to rush out and buy(especially at $60 per most games). Even my son hasn't touched it in several days, and this was from a kid who hasn't stopped talking about it since it was first shown almost a year ago. He does only have Mario for now, so I'm sure he'll play more after Christmas.

Am I the only one who dislikes steelbooks? I prefer normal cases so it looks more consistent on my shelf, next to the other titles. Also, steelbooks often aren't labeled on their spines, so you can't even see the name of the game. I wish, if CE's have to have them, that they're included alongside the standard cases.

not enough of them do it like FFXII - Zodiac Age.

Good lookin' steel with title on edge, plus slipcover with all info from the back of a standard release.

Yeah, that's another interesting dynamic.  I've had to explain that to a couple different sets of my friends with toddler aged children.  That the Switch is absolutely not for young children.  It's a tablet, with moving parts, that could also scratch or crack easily, and could break if it's dropped.

The Swtich has been a double-edged sword for Nintendo.  Because it's very much an adult gaming machine, but it's still marketed towards kids and kids want one.

I will never understand my friends that let their babies chew on their phones or give them ipads when they are two years old.  That stuff has gotten ridiculous.

I actually don't own any that I know of, but I'm sure I've had some in the past(probably have some now, just don't know what). It's a whatever type item for me, as it can look cool, but sometimes not. Since I have never really been all that interested, I probably haven't seen the best there is out in the market.

It's a cool collectible I suppose for those who are fans, but over the years, I just have never paid much attention to them. So now when I see one offered in a CE, it's never a motivation for me to get the set. I'll get the set if I like other things, but I've never gotten any CE or pre-order bonus for the steelbook alone.

I do very much like lenticular 3D sleeves offered for some games(mostly 3DS titles, but not all), but those are far and in between. But if I was going to collect something "case" related, those would probably be it.

I thought all steelbooks had that. I only have FFXII, Persona 5, and Valkyria Chronicles though. Not any that come with CEs.

that's usually the case with individual releases. some exceptions, like the Ninja storm set that released a few months ago.

But generally speaking, CE's don't include any form of slipcover.

Having the xenoblade 2 ce steelbook in my hands now, I kinda want a standard case. Might grab one down the road from gamestop or somewhere.

That's why they have insurance. And giving the kid something to shut them up for a few minutes is worth it to them.

Switch wise I won't be getting one unless the new tales of game is really REALLY good and remains an exclusive (which lol will never happen)

I didn't think you had bought a current gen machine yet. Aren't you still on PS3/360 stuff?

How’s the gameplay/combat for Xenoblade?
So I'm about 10 hours in and starting Chapter 3, I'll use your question to kind of piggyback my early Impressions :D/

So right of the back I'll say this, If the story doesn't grab you by the end of Chapter 1 which is no more than 3 hours into the game. You won't like this game and you should just give up now. It's so god damn impactful and well done that it might be my single best moment in gaming this year(Obviously I hope it builds on that but man is it good!).

The music is stunning, that's all there really is to say about it. It's up there with Nier Automata/Persona 4 or 5/Odyssey.

Graphics aren't the best. Playing it on my 4k TV it can look a lil rough but on a 1080P monitor it looks excellent. This is common with stretching resolutions but I figured it was worth a mention. Handheld mode is fine, not great but not bad either. I've noticed frame dips maybe twice? Mostly when loading into a city but never in combat or cutcenes.

The characters are likeable and or funny, so far I haven't met anyone that I flat out dislike or find annoying.

2 hours into the game I forgot about my small gripes with the voice acting, It's not perfect but it's also not as bad as ppl make it out to be.

My biggest complain so far is that while fighting out in the field if you tunnel vision for too long, something will probably sneak up on you and 1 shot you. I'm not used to that in games but this has been part of the series for awhile, so it takes some getting used to and apply any MMORPG tactics you've learned and actually pull mobs to safe areas.

So all that leaves is combat.. which is just a JOY!

Cumbersome? I wouldn't say that, but it does require a bit of investment on you to learn. Tutorials are plenty, which depending on you may hinder your experience. But if you read thru them can't really ever feel lost, it incrementally introduces more tools to eventually build crazy elemental chains that feel satisfying when completed.

I'm only a couple hours in, and I'm not really liking the combat at all. You move like you're stuck underwater, and any movement stops your auto attacks. Maybe this changes later, but you have to charge your art abilities with auto attacks. They don't charge over time like the last two games, and you don't have access to any of them at the start of a fight. So the flow of combat is like this:

Engage an enemy

Stand perfectly still to let your character attack to charge up art abilities

Reposition yourself so your art abilities hit from the angle you need them to

Use enough art abilities to level up for a Heat attack

Also you only have about four Art Abilities right now. I'm sure you can learn a whole bunch more, but from the looks of the UI it looks like you can only have three or four equipped at a time. It's not like the last two games where you could have a bunch of attacks to choose from at any given time. Then there's the Driver/Blade mechanic where the game tells you to stay physically close to your Blade so you can get lots of buffs and passive skills. So on top of the whole having to stand perfectly still during battle you have to make sure you're within range of your Blade to get even more skills.

I don't understand why they made positioning is so important when your movement speed is fucking garbage. I hope I get a little more into it, because I'm having trouble going back to it when it's such a cumbersome experience.

It's slower than XCX, even late-game with attack cancelling.

I feel like the combat got a bit better once you get your blade. I'm not sure if you being a couple of hours in got you to that point.

Timing art button presses on the auto-attacks for the bonus helps. You still have the problem of auto-attacking until you can use your first art, but I see a lot of skills in the character trees that make it so you can use some arts as soon as a battle starts.

That's literally where I'm spending all of my points, getting 20str seems meaningless when I'd rather build chains faster.

That just makes me sad. It's my biggest gripe with the battles.

Yeah, I've got Pyra (Homura), but she just stands there and every now then I'll see a shield or some regen happen. I'm hoping there are more active Blades that actually do something during battle outside of the big fancy Limit Break QTEs.

Also looks like the only armor you have any control over is your accessories, which means you won't see any model changes like you did in the other games when you changed gear. I hate that this is gone, because I absolutely hate every single thing about Rex's stupid character design. Looks like he's wearing metal MC Hammer pants over swimming pool trunks.

The music is excellent and the world is very pretty, but the story feels flat. That part at the beginning had me rolling my eyes so fast when there's literally a
*teleports behind you* "Nothing personnel, kid" moment.

Same here. There's still not a single Switch game that has me wanting to purchase the system. Yet another countless Mario or Zelda title won't do it for me, nor will any of the re-released games like Skyrim that I originally played five years ago. That said, Nintendo is at least trying with their exclusives, which can't be said for Microsoft recently.

For me, the strong IP franchises that Nintendo owns (that will perpetually be exclusives) have always been what draw me in. The hardware gimmicks are usually more of an annoyance to me, but almost every game Nintendo puts out has an impressive layer of polish, mechanical soundness, and care put into it.

That said, there's absolutely no need to buy most of the games on launch unless you care about special editions. They might never hit the $10-20 pricemark (Nintendo is weird with MSRPs), but something as mass-produced as BotW or Odyssey will never be more expensive than the $60 launch price.

Got a surprise delivery of my XC2 CE today by UPS instead of monday =)

not enough of them do it like FFXII - Zodiac Age.

Really? I checked a few of mine that didn't have slipcovers and they all had titles on the spine. I was surprised and annoyed when I saw the XC2 steelbook didn't have one =/

So I got the urge to start playing through some of the new FFXV content. Going to wait a little bit before starting Episode Gladiolus and prompto. Just started the Assassin's Festival expansion stuff. Seems pretty cool. anything major I should be aware of with this?

There are some items that can carry over to your main game if you haven't finished it. Otherwise, enjoy. :)

Yeah, MS has been off their nut for awhile now. LOL I think once their plan for world domination and an all in one set top box never came to fruition, I think the Xbox division really has lost it's focus. I agree completely on "N" as well. The Mario & Zelda offerings can be good, but getting a system for two games, ain't cutting it. BotW was a huge disappointment for me, as I don't get the hype for that at all. I stopped midway thru from boredom. And I've been playing Mario Odyssey the last few weeks, and it's fun, but I wouldn't call it great(at least not yet). Galaxy 1 & 2 are my 3D Mario high water marks, and Odyssey has the perfect title, as the games is all over the map. I guess they just ran out of ideas for a cohesive game, and just said if you have an idea, let's put it in.

That was true for me years ago, but most of their games now or just tired retreads, or failed experiments. They have tons of great IP's, but we see the same ones again and again. It took forever to get a new true Star Fox title, and it couldn't have been any worse. Where's Punch-Out, PilotWings, F-Zero, Wario-Ware, etc?

Like I stated above, their two highest rated games almost ever, are very forgettable titles for me thus far. I'm hoping with the success of the NS hardware, and putting money back in the bank, they will get back to making fun and unique games like Warioware. Captain Toad on the Wii U was a shining moment for me, as it was new, unique, and actually FUN!

As for the gimmicks, yeah, I can do with out them. But honestly, the games they put out now, seem lesser titles to me in the same way the gimmicks are half baked ideas. They really need fresh and new staff there, as I have had about as much as I can take from these top tier franchises, as they take forever to release, and are often disappointments in there own right. As they are just slight changes from the versions we got a few years before.

There are some items that can carry over to your main game if you haven't finished it. Otherwise, enjoy. :)
I guess I did pretty good. Looking through this list I actually just finished getting all of them except for the Master Assassin's Robe bc I never did the Moogle Chocobo carnival. The story included in the Assassin's Festival was quirky and short but overall I thought it was pretty fun, especially for something free. They definitely put a lot of work into building it. Not sure how much I have left to do honestly. Still missing 3 of the 15 flags and need 2 more cores for the hand over 10 cores to the shady dealer quest but otherwise I think I've done it.

Definitely makes me want to play more. I've been thinking of picking up the season pass for a while now so I could play ep. Gladiolous and Prompto but have been hoping it would go on sale. It hasn't... still considering it a whole bunch. Are those episodes longer than the Assassin's Festival was - main questline wise?

Are those episodes longer than the Assassin's Festival was - main questline wise?
If you just go through the story then Gladiolus and Prompto will average around two hours each. Prompto's episode has more dialogue and cut-scenes so his will be longer where as Gladiolus focuses a lot more on fighting.

A lot of PC games flooding onto Steam this week and going through Steam has been more of a pain in the ass lately. I think I'm going to drop adding in Chinese language only games unless they specifically mention that they're releasing in English at some point. I'll still keep listing the Japanese language only games though. Though SHMUPs (and probably Fighting games) will be posted regardless. Normally I add games from PC based on release date, but I'm going to try and remember to push the Chinese and Russian developed games towards the bottom so it doesn't drown out the other stuff.

Other stuff that released without warning last week (Assume PC unless otherwise noted):
- MyTD 我的塔防 (Tower Defense)
- Let`s not stay friends (Visual Novel)

They really need fresh and new staff there, as I have had about as much as I can take from these top tier franchises, as they take forever to release, and are often disappointments in there own right. As they are just slight changes from the versions we got a few years before.
I dont really understand this other than to say that you just dont like the games they produce....and that's fine! It seems odd to me, though, that you would say they make "tired retreads" when their latest iterations of Mario and Zelda, as you've admitted, are some of the more highly acclaimed games out there. Retread? Maybe, but definitely not tired. Also, you decry their "failed experiments" (without citing examples mind you), by want them "get back to making fun and unique games." Is that not what "experiments" do? Not everything can be a hit. But a game like Splatoon has been very popular and, from what I've seen of kids at the playground, Arms seems to keep their attention. Do Snipperclippers and 1-2 Switch "work" (aka are fun) like WarioWare? I dont know. But I wouldnt say that they arent trying to do something different.

Now, like you, none of these things do anything for me. These are not the games I am looking for. But I can at least see that they are trying to appeal to a wide audience of loyalists and new folks alike. Generally, I think they are on the right track on the software side.

This is some thoughts and opinions on "N", for those who don't like my point of view, please pass it by, as I'm responding directly to the person who is quoted. If someone would like to join in or ask a question feel free, if you want to stir the normal pot, move along.

My apologies, I should have been more specific, but most people around here can quote my past statements. So it's strange when someone here isn't an authority on my past opinions & views(often more than me even). LOL

I guess the new Mario and Zelda games would fall under my experimentation statement. As both games offer "new" things to their own franchises, but nothing I find really appealing. As the heart of what made those games "great" is gone for me. That's OK, as what made those games 3D versions great for me, may have been boring to others, or maybe "N" wanted to give them both a shot in the arm. I don't know really, but the masses seem to be eating it up, so more power to them.

Outside of Zelda being in trouble, and the world coming to an end, BotW it's very, very different from what all past games have been. Even the 2D ones. Yes, it does seem to want to capture the newer open world crowd, but I never saw the series needing that, as I always found secrets and hidden gems in the worlds without having to wander around for hours like I do now. Maybe that's appealing to some, I always found "N" had a great knack for offering "new", while still being true to great game design(and keeping things fresh). I fight the same enemy's over and over, and once you clear them out, the world resets and gives it all to you again. Weapons breaking, was almost enough to stop me playing out the gate, as I find that to be ZERO fun, and would never play another game where that was a feature. It may be a "real" life situation, but I'm not playing video games for any real life situation.

Now "N" seems happy to throw shit at a wall, and see what sticks! 3D Mario games are possibly without doubt, some of the greatest games ever made, starting with Mario 64. Odyssey for me is more of what BotW was, as it's just a ton of new ideas, with little to no focus. "N" has always been a company that when designing games was all about focus. Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS was an amazing game to me, as it was very fun, combined what was great about the 2D games, and the 3D ones into a great portable adventure. I know it wasn't well received by all, but it was the first time I had played a Mario game since Super Mario Bros. on the NES, where I actually felt a sense of wonder and amazement. A truly wonderful game, and one of the best I've played from them in 20+ years.

Yes, some games work, and some don't, even in main franchises, but when the motto used to be "A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game, is bad forever", I'm just not seeing that anymore from this company. I see ton's of delayed games, and once they arrive, I have to wonder what was going on all that time.

Kid Icarus 3DS had production values thru the roof, and an included stand for janky controls, really? Star Fox Zero, a remake of a game that has had many releases over the years, to only offer broken controls that to my knowledge, wasn't broken to begin with. "N" of 20 years ago would never have released games that had serious flaws like this, and then say learn to deal with it, that's BS at it's highest level. And in no way is that some level of great game design, when I have to fight more with controls, than enjoying and having fun with the games.

I've been playing "N" games since Game & Watch and the arcades, I've seen it all, played it all and owned it all. I'm sorry to say, but the company that was once masters of leading game software development, no longer do all that great. Of course this is my opinion, and others are more than happy to disagree.

Does anyone know what's going on with The 25th Ward: The Silver Case on Amazon? It was up for pre-order for a while, but it's been unavailable for like two months now.

I'm not sure about the standard edition, but there was a price mistake on the limited edition back in October. That one has been out since then.
