Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Anyone know if there is much of a difference between the PS3 and PS4 versions of Aegis of Earth: Protonovus Assault. PS3 version has been dropping pretty steadily recently sitting at $17.28 right now with a lot of (LN) AWD listings for $14.92. Really tempted to pick it up but I'm not sure if I would be better off holding out for the PS4 version to drop to around $20.

I'm not so sure but since this is a Tower Defense game and all, I was thinking it'd be a game for me to play on Vita. And 'cause we love Vita. That's $21 on AWD right now; just bought one. Seems most people like it?

PS4/PS Vita Exclusive JRPG Ys VIII Gets New Screenshots on Famitsu: Shows New Characters

Three new characters, Kilgore, Curran and Alison. On top of that, we also get a glimpse of the monster “Master Kong.”

Xenoblade Chronicles Hits the Wii U Virtual Console Tommorow

Xenoblade Chronicles will be launching at a price point of 19.99 USD
Might be interested in King of Fighters if it has online

As far as Xenoblade goes, I wonder what that will do to the price of physical copies
Funny how people are complaining about no trailer for Ys VIII.

For Xenoblade...I dunno, the markets have been flooded with the International versions and Gamestop will look even sillier for selling it for $65 without Power Up Rewards. If it drops I'll regret buying a copy from AWD for $40...granted it did turn out to be an original version with the reversible slip cover and manual.

I actually enjoyed it a decent amount (Quit like 2 missions before the end, but may go back), but there are a couple caveats.

1) As the game progresses, you get missions to bring one of your cities up in happiness. This shit goes down quickly once you start getting more than a couple of towns and it's rather annoying. Why? Because happiness is tied directly into incoming population after completing a mission. Those missions are stupid and it kills my drive to play because I don't like seeing stats go down that I raised up to begin with. (For the record, you can buy a building that raises happiness and just pay the city for happiness, but the fact that it's so simple is dumb. Also upgrading those buildings is worthless)

2) It doesn't have typical modes that you see in tower defense games like endless or challenge modes. It's just the campaign. Once you get your city up to snuff near the end of the campaign, any difficulty you occasionally run into is completely gone. This leads to little replay value beyond a certain point outside of completionist/trophy whore value.

3) Load times on the PS4 are artificial for the most part. LET ME SKIP ANIMATIONS THAT YOU CONSTANTLY MAKE ME VIEW AFTER EVERY GOD DAMNED BATTLE. There's only like one thing I can skip and it's only a quart of the bucket you have to wade through... constantly.

Game also lacks enemy types. Sure each type has a couple variations, but eh. Bosses are kinda fun though. Which make up like half of the enemy types. So I'd say $20 is the absolute most I can recommend it for, but $10 or $15 isn't a bad price.

That White Album link for Steam Greenlight doesn't work. I opened my eyes and was like White Album...I need that since I saw the anime adaption. Think it also needs the 18+ version, but that is something else. The thing is I don't know if anyone licensed it.....seems kind of weird is all, and I hope that Greenlight page comes back up, but honestly I don't remember any licensor getting the VN.
I hope it was for White Album 2, didn't really like the first one's anime

Sorry to the folks that have to read me yapping about this twice, but I thought that maybe the people here might know what's going on.  I've found my internet searches on the subject to be less than helpful.

So I fired up Hand of Fate again on the PS4, and noticed that there was an update.  I downloaded it, and found that there were a number of changes.  Mostly, that Nymphs of the Sweetwoods, Time Heals, and probably some other favorite cards that I can't remember are nowhere to be found.  Every time anybody asked the developer about it, they'd say "We didn't take any cards out, they've just been moved further down on the unlock table."  Well, the thing is I already had all of the cards unlocked, so telling me it unlocks later on doesn't make any sense.

Does anyone here know what the deal is with the current version of Hand of Fate?

Is Nights of Azure worth buying?
I'm somewhat into Chapter 2 right now and somewhat enjoying the story. At least i think i am, there's a good deal of mystery and yuri to keep me interested, but if it goes no where. I will be upset. Though the gameplay itself is really dull and the level up mechanics are dumb. A straight up XP system would have been better.

Bought Digimon on the golden week sale. Playing it right now. I love the menu designs. Both your main menu and battle menu are pretty cool. Enjoying it for the most part but have a few gripes.

The translation is a bit shoddy here and there. It's not SAO bad, but it's clearly not Bamco's best work. A few lines in dialogue seem out of place without any transition.

The digimon only make noise when they use their special attack. It makes battles seem a bit eerily quiet. Even a growl would be preferable to the silence.

The main character is a boring selfinsert. At least she talks in battle but other than that it's just ... and head nods.

Nokia and your character look far too similar. They should at least change her hair color or not have them both with similar length tied hair.

How quickly you just accept the situation and start working as a "cyber sleuth" is a bit weird.

I don't understand why text messages aren't sorted by person. Having all your texts in one screen just seems like a silly bad design choice.

Oh and about how it runs.

I swear there was some bad artifacting on the first cutscene for a second and then the bitrate caught up.

It looks good enough but there are some jaggies on the character models. Hard to notice though. The way dialogue is handled is like Bravely Default where you just see the character models talking in a side to side view. I think it works really well and suits it. Would like to see more games do this over static images. You get a lot of good emotes out of the characters without worrying about designing the background.

People mentioned loading times but it's not too bad. Pretty short loading times overall. I may have noticed if I played the PS4 version but it's perfectly acceptable on the vita.

It does feel a little bit sticky after you talk to someone. Like a split second before you can move your character again. This might just be how it's designed but I'm used to moving immediately after closing a text box.

Running animation is weird but kinda funny.

All that said, I am enjoying it a good deal. Gonna get back to playing now.

Wii U system sales forecasts magically drop off next year. For no reason guys, serious. There's no reason that Nintendo basically stopped developing games for it. It's a coincidence that people said that 12.5 million units were manufactured in 2012 and then production stopped.

The Wii U will be physically soldout when Zelda hits...

So it just occurred to me that the way they're doing dlc releases for DOAX3 as patch updates, each time a new bikini is released, I'm gonna have to download a 200mb patch on top of the old updates. So by the end of the year the game will take up a few gb on my vita memory card even though I never use the dlc. This is just gonna snowball and the game is gonna take up too much of my limited space.

Finished up code realize last night. Are any of the other vns on Vita similar, Other than the otome factor? I loved pretty much all of the storylines, and the fact that there was quite a bit of action. Only thing I was a little disappointed with was how little animations there actually were. The story will probably end up as one of my all-time favorites.

I liked the main character in that one plus the side characters where fun. Unfortunately localized there isn't too many games similar to that (like say a general romance/adventure VN). We have murder mystery (Danganronpa games), VLR and Zero Escape 3 sometime for like puzzle/escape danger....type games, Two more otome games (Norn9 and Amnesia:Memories) which are also romance for sure...I haven't played them both so can't comment, but I've heard at least Amnesia is relatively weak story wise with a weak main character. Then there is sc-fi cool Steins:Gate. I think your best chance is Norn9 though I've heard the story isn't amazing cause of the way it's split out. I can't comment fully since I haven't played it yet.

I believe when we get Root Letter, that will be a good choice as it seems to be some romance/mystery game. Also Muv Luv games are coming out hopefully the end of the year, and those have a bit of everything and are widely considered some of the best VNs, so that will be interesting. Hopefully this helped and honestly I think I named off all the localized VNs heh and some future ones, though eventually Root Double is coming as a digital download for Vita, and I started playing the PC version, and it seems like a very interesting suspense, possible romance, survival, etc....game.

Having played that, Norn9, and Amnesia: Memories, I consider Code:Realize the best, Amnesia not as great but still pretty good, and Norn9 the worst.

"Shinjuku Matagi (cop who loves Shinjuku)"

I think that might have been intentional considering what's going on.

Other people are. I'm waiting til it drops to $20-25.

Strange Journeys should have remained a numbered title, and IV the side story.

I don't know if any body else got the email, but Iffystore says there's a misprint in the Blanc Zombies LE artbook, and their giving everyone a free Greenheart sticker to compensate. Honestly it's a really small detail and I don't really give a crap, in fact I prefer Noire over Vert anyway, but this is a really, really nice gesture from them and I appreciate it. Beats doing nothing and ignoring it which has happened before. So all the props to them.

I didn't get any opinions on the PSN thread so I'll try here:

What are people's thoughts on Omega Quintet? I thought the original Neptunia was a terrible game, and totally not worth the time I put into clearing it. I've avoided that whole franchise even though I've heard they made things better. On the flip side though I quite enjoyed FairyFF, although I wasn't willing to invest the time to grind out the platinum trophy for it.

Fairy Fencer F is pretty much modeled after the Neptunia games that came after the first one, so if you liked that you'd like the other Neptunia games.

Omega Quintet is also pretty similar to the good Neptunia games.
