Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Stardew Valley received a patch on the Switch that seems to fix save times.

  • Players should see a significant improvement on save times! Also, the saving screen is now animated.
  • The new video recording feature is now supported!
  • When a controller connects or disconnects, the Controller Support Applet now appears to ask which controller you want to use to play the game, instead of silently switching to the new controller.
  • The game now detects Simplified / Traditional Chinese environments on first start up and defaults to the Simplified Chinese localisation instead of English.
  • Fixed issue that created the unintended ability to skip saving at night with a well-timed button press.
  • Fixed an issue causing the player character (and sometimes important NPCs) to appear off-screen during certain cutscenes.
  • Fixed a temporary soft lock that occurred when the player pressed A and B together while eating or drinking an item.
  • Fixed a way for players to temporarily lose access to essential tools via the chest interface’s organize button.
  • Fixed the Wizard’s slay monster quest sometimes asking you to kill 0 monsters.
  • Fixed a crash that sometimes occurred while sleeping (before saving) if any essential tools were not in your inventory at the time.
  • Fixed the wrong tooltips sometimes appearing on the bundle interface in the Community Center area.
  • Fixed the inability of players to drop items without deleting them when using the cursor mode that snaps to UI elements.
  • Morning music is no longer looped endlessly, and now fades out during the day as it should.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when opening the journal with no quests.
  • Fixed occasional inability to select certain items in the crafting menu.
  • Fixed a crash that occurred when pressing the ‘-‘ button when playing a minigame at the Saloon.
  • Fixed button controls for the Prairie King minigame shooting in the wrong direction.
  • Fixed occasional left channel audio crackling
  • Fixed lack of vibration in handheld mode

A lot of people seemed to have issues with that, so I figure it's worth posting.

You guys play your games?
this is why I can't answer Draekon's question =(

I am a mainstream whore it would seem.

If only I had bought some sort of hypothetical three hundred dollar "Ultimate Collector's Edition" if you will, that properly gave me access to all the future FFXV content... :whistle2:k

Never thought I'd see the day. Thanks a ton PQube!

How could you make fishing an srpg?
I imagine it would play a little like Battleship. Only instead of health, the fish would have stamina bars. Better reels and lures(i.e. your pay to win equipment cards) would decrease the stamina at a faster rate and allow you to catch bigger fish before you run out of stamina and the fish gets away.

If someone at Square reads this and makes this game i want 5% of the profit.

Asian release got a pretty nice CE, with exclusive key chains (or postcards?) I believe, that was not present in the Japanese CE.

That Asian release CE quickly became rare and pricey, and promptly stopped me from importing it.

Wow, digital and physical combined? Across PS3/PS4/Vita?
I was also going to ask this, kind of. I'm always interested in details of how people handle or don't handle their backlog.

Do you buy most of your games digitally, Supplice? At least for me the problem seems to have stemmed from getting burned by waiting on buying a game and then the price increasing as a print run dried up, but as long as there isn't a rights issue in the short-term digital doesn't have that problem.

Since we are on the note of backlog, I bought zero PS4 games this BF, pretty proud of myself. My PS+ backlog of Infamous SS, Lords of Fallen, MGS V and JC3 should be plenty for me until Horizon and Nier is $10-ish.

i feel like my backlog is due to the free games from ps plus over the years stacking up.
However i must be grateful because i found hidden gems that i loved & never would of bought or played without ps plus.

Backlog wise with .hack g.u. recode vol 1 finished I have beaten 12 games this year.  Basically 1 a month.  I constantly buy games in sales so my backlog went from a little over 100 to exactly 175 this year.

Yean the free games from plus and steam and such really add up. Just got killer is dead free a few weeks ago.

Much of mine is cheap bundle games + free games + lots and lots of random sale purchases. I rarely do pay full price for games (other than VNs and they usually get a one week discount), but I have made many, many bundle purchases leading to a massively over bloated Steam library

I will never consider free games or bundle fodder part of my backlog. Only games I have bought and have an interest in playing. No point in forcing myself to play games I have zero interest in. I've cut back to trying to mostly buy games I plan to play at that time I get them. There are some exceptions, but they're pretty uncommon.

Backlog for me is games I would actually play too, not just random games I have from whatever reason. That's still more like 1000 titles deep.

A more realistic backlog (the shortlist) is probably still like 100.

I'm not too surprised, Supplice's trophy level is nearing 75. At this point, I think he's played almost every game out there and is running out of games, waiting for new releases to come out.

Yeah, Transistor a hidden PS+ gem that managed to become one of my top 5 games of all time.

Dust was great. It checked all the tick boxes.

-Interesting story

-Enjoyable gameplay

-Safe to play with kids in the room.

I really need another game like that.

How many hours does Dust take to play through? I've had it sitting on my PS4 hard drive for as long as I remember, and always assumed it was some mediocre PS+ game not worth my time.

10 to 15 hours I believe. It's a good game, but like any other game there will be people who dislike it.
