Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Sadly, I stopped watching or caring for awards shows decades ago. It's either based on judges opinions, which is OK, but since most times it's anonymous, there's no way to tell if a judge has any taste to begin with. LOL

Or, you get a system open to the public where they vote, but that is also a rather skewed result. As that is open to be scammed or other issues can happen. Where as I thought BotW was good for a new "N" effort, I really didn't like the game at all. But just based on the popular opinion, I would have been surprised if it didn't win.

Maybe, maybe not, as Bayonetta 2 got a SE in EU that we never saw. The great thing now is it doesn't matter, as the NS is region free. So NoA can sit on their hands if they want, or offer a lesser version which is also a possibility, as now it really doesn't matter. So long as an English version lands some place in the world, fans can get it and not have to worry.

Ehhh...BotW is at the top of my list right now followed by Nioh and Ys VIII. This is coming from someone who has had little love for Nintendo since the Gamecube era.

Romancing SaGa 2 Remaster coming to PS4, XB1, Switch, VITA & PC

Bayonetta 1 & 2 Special Edition releasing in Europe:
bayonettaspecial.png

Safe to say we'll get a US version as well.
That means absolutely nothing, considering Europe gets so many special and collector editions that we don't get at all or if we do we get the bare-bones version of it.

Really don't want to play Romancing Saga 2 right away, but it's one of the HD upgrades I actually wanted, so I'll buy to support it. I did like Romancing Saga 3 a lot, so hope this one is good too.

Your first post got me super hyped then you had to go and ruin it with your second. I guess I shouldn't be surprised about Bayonetta 3 but I'm still disappointed it won't be on better consoles.
Are we still supposed to be pissed about that? Nintendo's occasional drunken buying spree is the only reason Bayonetta still exists at all, so I'm all for it. Hell, I'd be happy if they just bought the damn rights from SEGA and be done with it.

It's been a while since I've heard someone bring up the console wars lol.

The Switch hasn't even been out for a year yet, give it some time. And if you're saying PC, PS4, XBOX ONE are 'better' because they're more powerful, then yeah, I guess you're right. But that's not all that makes a better console, so I will respectfully disagree.

Anyways, I'm glad to see more games for Switch. And I'm really glad Soul Calibur went back to the time of the first game. I hated that the other recent games did like a time skip and most of the original characters were not available anymore.

My biggest complaint with BotW has always been that it was a Zelda game in name and little else. The gameplay doesn't resemble typical Zelda games, it's a (very polished) mashup of mechanics from Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, and Dark Souls (among others). This news is disappointing to me because the critical acclaim plus sales of BotW means the franchise will likely follow suit to BotW, abandoning the pre-BotW Zelda style, gameplay, and charm that most of us knew and loved.

Yes it's a huge cash grab, and i'm a sucker enough to buy them again when they go cheap, such as the KH collections, or FFXHD....and someday Devil May Cry HD. Also stuff like GOW3. Those games aren't that old...but to play them on the nicer controllers....
you can use a ps4 or procontroller on ps3

For the most part, don't they change it up a lot pretty much every iteration besides OOT/Majora's Mask?

There are a few different primary motifs, but there's also an underlying essence of Zelda games (dungeons, new key items, etc.). BotW threw a lot of those underlying elements out the window to provide an open world/sandbox game.

I've heard BotW described as the modern version of Zelda 1 on the NES, which might be why I haven't played it yet. I never cared for Zelda 1, Zelda 2 was better.

Yeah, any future Zelda titles will likely follow the new formula. If the game had better enemy variety, actual dungeons with better bosses, less of an emphasis on loot, no gamebreaking food healing, and actual rewards for exploration I'd be a much bigger fan of it.

Even Zelda 1 had a better Zelda feel to it. You still got items, you still went into dungeons, there were still puzzles, etc. BotW was "here's every item you'll ever get, now go into the completely open world".

I'd like more of a sense of actual progression in the game as well. Part of the fun of non-BotW Zelda games was discovering a puzzle or destination, having no way to address it, and then getting an item later that suddenly connected all of the dots. But I think you hit most of the nails on the head.

Like Nami's cup size with each passing story arc?
Yes, but more frequently. (this is the sixth Soul Calibur, after all) Also, until recently Nami actually bothered to wear a full shirt most of the time. It didn't exactly mitigate the cleavage-creep, but it did at least draw less attention to it. Post time-skip, all bets are off in One-Piece.

In Soul Calibur, I think it's becoming a real issue. The preview video they posted didn't even feature Ivy, and I was still getting way too much of a sense of cleavage-creep. While Sophitia has always been reasonably buxom, I never associated her with that particular physical attribute. The level of endowment that they are foisting on her already just seems excessive. They need to exercise a bit more restraint in this department. Bad enough when this effect shows up on dominatrix-whip-sword lady and spandex-ninja lady. Variety is the spice of life, and there are far more female body-types that ought to be represented, especially in a fighting game. Not everyone needs to be smuggling cantaloupes.

Pretty much my feelings as well. Even though the next game will probably be more of the same, hopefully it will at least be one cohesive effort, and not just a bunch of so-so ideas thrown in the pot.

We can always hold out hope for another great 2D game, as one should be coming along within the next year or two. I actually enjoyed some of the new ideas added to a Link Between Worlds, and if it would have been an original game, it would have rated higher for me I'm sure.

I agree completely.

@whoknows the thing is, I can understand that repeating the same formula is quite tiring and the Zelda franchise needed some things to change it up. It's just that they went in a direction that doesnt really retain any of the Zelda-esque elements except the characters.

I just want to clear up my earlier statement with this. I'm not saying BotW is a bad game by any means, it's still really good, as someone who loves all things Zelda. The thing is that it shouldn't be GOTY this year because it has been a great year for games and there are more deserving candidates.

Tenioha! : Girls Can Be Pervy Too! eroge review

Link for purchase (NSFW)

VNDB Link

To start off the review this is only available to purchase on Nutaku. It's not cheap either at $45 dollars.

Story: A very simple story about a guy who is in a culture club and the club has 3 girls in it. They all interact with the guy and eventually through very few choices you can end up on the route for any of them. It's really not complicated at all and honestly jumps around maybe a bit too much when you're on routes. 6/10

Characters: I honestly detested one of them. One of the characters was just plain annoying and just seemed to be the yes girl and just do things. The other 2 main girls had their quirks, but were overall pretty nice. The side characters are very one dimensional with your friend wanting to be the tentacle king and some girl in a club that doesn't want you to be around a girl. Very basic, though the main girls all have development (maybe sans the 1 I disliked). 6/10

Graphics: This one actually had very good drawings for all the characters. They were all distinct and there were a lot of CGs. Legs were maybe drawn a little weird, but otherwise anatomy was pretty good. The characters were all very cute and had a nice style. The backgrounds were kind of just there, but never distracted at all. 8/10

Sound: The character voices were all well done. They matched the characters well and none of them were annoying. The music was forgettable and honestly I don't remember a single character theme or background song. 7/10

Enjoyment: Honestly I had a bit of fun with most of the routes. They felt a bit disjointed in their storytelling, but at least had an end sight in goal. The drama wasn't too much, although it happens all over, as expected from these games. There was an extra route as well, but frankly it was horribly done and not worth pursuing. 6/10

Overall:

This is easily an average to below average Nukige. I would buy it around $15-20 at most, as it's very forgettable after you're done with it. Heck I don't even remember one of the endings anymore. 6/10

The only advantage the Switch hardware has is portability. As someone who games exclusively at home on a monitor, that advantage is completely negated leaving my Switch to collect dust between exclusives that struggle to hold 30 FPS even when built for the system. I guess there are more people that game on the go or make use of undocked mode due to their kids/wife/whoever wanting the TV than I expected because I am surprised how well the Switch is doing.

You've said this twice but haven't mentioned the more deserving games in your opinion.

Eh half the time she was wearing a small t shirt or tank top. Granted the first couple arcs it was more pg. Probably up to buggys arc. then there's the belly dancer shirt she wore during the alabasta arc. Well for the parts of the arc she wasn't wearing the shroud thing.

Her gold tank top is probably one of the more famous what with the boob giggle gifs it spawned if that's the one. She has alot of tops with words on them.

Oh neat someone did a manga art compilations of all her clothes up to dressrosa. There's many outfits that are exclusive to the filler in the anime though. I didn't know her alabasta outfit was pink in the manga. Shame they didn't keep that coloring it looked better.

This reminds me of how much I miss robins pre time skip design. Her clothes were so much more hotter without being slutty.

I really do recommend this game for the story/characters/world. One of the better games this year that nobody has played.
Has anyone ordered this off Amazon recently and gotten the launch edition? Woukd consider purchasing at this price if theres a chance of getting that version.

Go Play some Horizon Zero Dawn.
And this is exactly why I could not get into BotW. I played Nier:A then H:ZD finally moving over to BotW and just found myself getting frustrated with the mechanics of it all and traded it in shortly thereafter. Oh and the loot treadmill and piss poor durability on everything did not help to win me over either. Last Zelda game I enjoyed was Link Between Worlds and Link to the Past so take that for what you will.

Horizon was much more enjoyable than Zelda. After all the hype I expected more. It's still a good game, but I'd like the next iteration to have more dungeons and not as many shrines.

Wow this game looks incredible! And this is the 1st I've heard of it. Looks like what I expect from DMC 5.
It was an Indie Game made by one guy who was inspired by Final Fantasy. After releasing his trailer, the game got picked up by a publisher (I forget who).

I'm personally looking forward to it.

I can't wait for it. Currently, it's a timed exclusive from Sony.

Also, this was the trailer that he first showed. Everything in it was done by himself except voices.

Just got my Utawarerumono today. It was the version with the artbook. However, Amazon uses bubble mailers, so you'd have to be willing to accept a few minor dings. I've always up rated every time I got cardboard and always down rated bubble wrapped, but nothing seems to matter on Amazon's decision.

Well, I beat Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It was okay. Could've been better if it wasn't mired by so many poor choices that could have been easily prevented. Oh and fix all the irritating bugs such as crashing, infinite loading, getting pushed through environments by enemies so you fall to your death, falling through the ground, clipping through ladders, enemies spazzing out in various ways and probably a few more at least. I'll likely do a bit of a write-up for it at some point in the next week or so.

Wish the game would've allowed recording so I could have saved some of the ridiculous things I ran into.

How many hours did it take you? I got my first crash the other day but luckily I had just used a core crystal so the game was saved.

Breath of the Wild was incredibly refreshing, a true breath of fresh air for the series, but I gotta agree that it probably took it a bit too far. I still haven't finished it because of how overwhelming it is lol, but I found the lack of traditional dungeons disappointing. I mean, I remember playing Twilight Princess and absolutely loving getting a new piece of equipment and then making use of it. Like the top spinner thing, the wrecking ball, the hookshot (hookshot where u at in BotW)

Also found the soundtrack disappointing because they opted for a more nature oriented lack of overworld music. I dig the town music though

Thanks dude, ordered! And thanks to BRW for posting the deal!

Unrelated, but anyone else download the monster Hunter world beta and want to get a session going for party quest?

Still haven't beaten it yet. About 50 hours and in chapter 6, taking my time doing lots of side stuff.

With that said, I have yet to have the game crash on me or encountered any game breaking bugs. I only play while docked, and only powered down the console (not sleep mode) about 3 times so far.

I do agree with some of the gameplay stuff being bad (like the map or long skill tree transitions after merc missions), but hopefully a future patch can fix them.
