Bwahaha, $200 for that!?!? What an absolute joke. And you know, you just know it’ll be out at the same time or after the $80 version.

I mean, it’s Josh, I’m sure there’s way more in the former category. That having been said, given the popularity and reach of LRG at this point, I wouldn’t rule out at least some of the latter.

I’ve only watched about half of the video so far and yeah it absolutely feels like a fluff piece filled with softballs, no pushback on “yeah people are mad cause our stuff is awesome and takes a while make” completely ignoring the significant problem shipping in stock items and even Josh’s own public admission that “we ship the new stuff first, why make the new customers mad when we can keep making the old ones mad”

Pretty amusing Doug got mentioned. Otherwise, if it’s true the story of LRG’s founding is certainly interesting. The barely making it on personal loans, to basically his attitude that Breach and Clear wasn’t too great of a game but he wanted to have a trophy of just how dumb the idea was. I particularly thought it was interesting when he touched on the fleeting nature of digital-only releases. Felt a little like comparing to the flood of streaming-only movies/shows.
Amusing?

But yes, the story is true. The loan amount is a bit higher than I was told but I don’t know, I was never shown the amount just told $80K.

I will say, we only got credible death threats during January 2023 for you know what.

Most threats weren’t taken seriously and seemed to be people mad with legit reasons. Even with Night Trap, the “threats” we got didn’t seem real.

The only time I was personally worried before was a guy wearing a shirt with my face on it at cons telling people he planned to punch me.

Yeah, amusing. The way the company has seemingly completely shunned any mention of you only for Josh to mention you offhand as such a key part of the early company seems odd.

I mean, I don’t know what happened that’s between you and LRG but it seemed like you were completely on the outs with them so it’s a surprising shoutout.

Well we are still friends so that’s probably why he still mentions me since that’s what happened.

Hey Doug, good to see you here again. With your new company, dont be like LRG and start releasing 2-5 games each week, and start falling into their backlog problem. If you keep it reasonable, and only put out quality titles, I'll probably end up buying all your company's releases.

Just two questions:
1. Was he successful in punching you in the face?
2. Where can I get a shirt with your face on it? That way I can wear it and have people ask me "who's that on your shirt" and I can respond "oh, that's Doug" and they'll follow up with "Who's Doug?" and I can provide a follow up response of "he's a guy who did/did not (pending respond to question #1) get punched in the face".

Nah I never saw him. He only went to some small con in NJ I think.

Probably redbubble?

How long do they take to ship out after their "sales". Ordered May 28 and the status shows "Ready" for 3 games and "Shipping Now" for the other 3.

Haven't bought anything from LRG since 2020.

Regular crap, usually 3-5 weeks, with some lucky people getting out early.

Blind boxes, usually 3-5months, with some lucky people getting out early.

Always have a few folks in the 6+ months category. Do you feel lucky?

So Alan Wake II only has $80 and a $200 options??

Yes. The Deluxe edition includes the game, expansions pass and also a code Alan Wake Remastered at regular retail.

The collectors is through LRG only and includes everything from the above plus the extras. If the collector's wasn't $200 I would probably pick it up. That Lamp prop looks awesome. I just can't justify the price for it. I already own the digital deluxe on Xbox but I may pick up the Deluxe for PS5 to have in the collection.

And as expected, the premium prices for these physical games keep steadily creeping up. This and the console version of Baldur's Gate 3 (which only has a $100 version once you factor shipping) are previews of what even the large profile games will cost in a digital dominated space. Not looking forward to this at all.

The Deluxe edition of Alan Wake 2 is digitally $80 and Baldur's Gate 3 is $70 digitally. It's not a premium for physical games per se, it's just games costing more across the board. The only thing that bugs me about either is Larian charging $20 for shipping, which is indeed egregious.

The physical release includes both DLC and a digital copy of the first game. That's not really a premium.

The cost for shipping was worth it. They shipped it in a two layer cardboard box with a cardboard sleeve around the game box and it arrived in mint condition from Ireland.

That's good to hear, at least. I'm still waiting on mine since the PS5 ESRB copies are in production purgatory.

Same boat. Normally I wouldn't mind the wait (years of LRG conditioning I guess 😆). But I have someone who's very vocal about wanting me to join the multiplayer with them... VERY vocal 🤣

Well, come on, you and I both know the digital versions don't need to be priced the same as the physical version. The publishers/devs make leapfrogs more profit by cutting out retail production and the middlemen so those prices can (and will) dip super low probably by this holiday.

These now essentially made-on-demand physical games, however, will not drop in price and encourage FOMO for folks to pay immediately. Meanwhile, no shelf space worries for digital.

In short, all of that is to say that there is absolutely a physical premium you're paying for physical. Just because they're priced the same doesn't mean you're not paying a premium. In fact, it's far more likely a pricing signal strategy by the company to drive those who will pay more (or on the fence) for physical to scoop those up while they're publishing them.

As much as folks may think these companies are dumb, they're not. They manipulate the f$%k out of their customers and look for every opportunity to do so.

My single game order from the sale is still marked as Ready but looking at the order itself it still has the blurb "Some items in your order are still in production." ... which of course isn't true since the game was published years ago that I ordered and it's a standard game.

Pretty accurate... though I'm thinking you are underestimating "Regular crap". We'll see come July 1st if my order lands before the 5 weeks is up. We are almost to the half way point.

There's always been parity on AAA releases between digital and physical. It costs much less to produce/distribute the digital version so in a perfect world that cost saving would be passed on to the customer, but businesses are gonna do business things. I don't disagree with you there, but I don't interpret it as a premium because it's just status quo.

What I do think is fleecing the customer is saying there won't be a physical edition and just planning one a year later to get people to double-dip. Or things going through LRG/limprint that would've been fine at retail (Dead Space CE, AW2 CE, Microsoft's games). That's a newer development and feels very predatory.

The Vita listing is still on their site. Thing is, it was only available in the collectors edition, so if they do end up saying it was just a standard edition, there's a multitude of websites with the press release online, including from LRG:

LRG customer service responded already. They requested a photo of the game and packing slip, which I assumed they would. But I can't take a picture of the things that aren't there. So we'll see.

Anyone have opinions on Persona 3 Portable/Reload? I've not played either version yet, but Reload seems to interest me more. It's not an LRG release, but seems like a better version of the same game. Is there a big reason to pick one over?

Ok, sit back and relax because things get complicated.

Persona 3 Portable was the third version of Persona 3 and the only one on PSP, meaning in order to get it to work on a handheld device, they needed to cut out the anime cutscenes and limit town navigation to a menu, like a visual novel. While in Tartarus however, you still control your character and you see everyone on the battlefield, so only outside the dungeon crawling does it look super-scaled down. Also, the epilogue that was added to Persona 3 in the FES (second) version, The Answer, was cut completely. So, this sounds super inferior, right? Well, the main selling point of Portable was the ability to play as a girl (FeMC), which added in brand new social links with male party members (and also new NPCs), replaced some music with new tracks, and changed the UI color. The FeMC also has different dialogue choices in the story, giving her a very different personality from the original, male MC. Her inclusion has been very popular with fans (myself included) and she has only appeared in Portable. No other versions of Persona 3 have her. And of course, the male MC is still in the game, so you can choose male or female at the start.

Persona 3 Reload is a ground-up remake of the original Persona 3, with some changes based on FES (the ability to directly control your party members and the Aigis social link). Reload is considered the definitive version of the original Persona 3, and I emphasize that because there is no FeMC and no The Answer. The Answer is being added in September through the Expansion Pass, but if you just buy Reload base, The Answer will not be there. So, if you want everything Reload has to offer, you need to get both. Reload also has a brand new English voice cast, but they all do a good job and if you have no nostalgia for the original cast, this change won't matter to you. Other than that, the game looks beautiful and is a great way to experience the series for the first time. Yes, FeMC missing is a blow, but I understand including her probably would have added a lot more time to development. Cutting The Answer just to sell back to you later, however, is really damn shitty. Fatlus gonna Fatlus.

So, to summarize: Portable has inferior graphics and no The Answer, but it's the only way you can play the FeMC route. Reload is hands-down the definitive version of the original, male MC story, but it's also missing The Answer unless you buy it separately and FeMC is gone and most likely won't ever be added. In my opinion, if you've never played Persona 3 before, go with Reload unless you desperately want to play as a girl. Yes, Portable has both gender options, but the new additions to Reload make it just a fantastic JRPG. Plus, playing the male MC before FeMC is highly recommended so you can appreciate the changes to the narrative. The only drawback is that if you do want to play Portable after Reload, it'll probably be pretty tough to go back in time to a much more dated game.

Hope that helped!

Thanks for the detailed answer. I already redeemed the expansion pass for free for Reload thanks to game pass, so I've got that. Both versions seem to be at a similar price despite portable being limited. I also notice the CE for Reload has lots of DLC and it's price keeps going down for the moment.

Reload sounds like the one I want.

Reload is a great choice! I forgot to add that Reload has tons of new content, like brand new ways to hang out with your party members, new Tartarus mechanics, and additional music. As a new player, there's tons of content to enjoy, to say nothing of the joy it gave to returning players like me. It's seriously a blast.
