Slender's Woods

Adventure/First Person
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No

Theme: Horror

Slender's Woods is a short horror game about a mythical creature Slender man (Here you can find more information about him) and it takes place in the woods. Of course, the game is inspired by the famous Slender game by Parsec Productions, but it has a different type of gameplay. The game is made on EDuke32, an enhanced version of the classic Build engine.

The game has two modes with different gameplay:

1.Story mode, the main feature of the game, which plays like a quest with the enemy chasing you. You have to visit various locations, pick up/use items and solve the puzzles.
The story is about a man who decides to move into a house deep in the woods for a week. The man hears strange noises outside the house one night and decided to check it out. The story will have twists and sudden moments to make you more interested in solving the mystery.

2.Page collecting mode. This mode is added just as a bonus for the fans of the original game. You have to collect a certain amount of pages in the woods to survive (or maybe not).

You may unlock a small bonus if you beat both Story and Page Collecting modes.

Overall, the game features random events and scripted sequences, a proper storyline and ending, a fully original soundtrack, a fully functional menu, easter eggs and also an ability to fight back Slender man at the end.

Gamefaq - Top 10 Free Games Of 2012

2012 was a great year for video games, and a great year for free software. The idea of free business models has become a real player in the industry, from free-to-play installs, to the increase in free indie titles on distribution services like Steam and GOG, to forum-brewed internet sensations like the Slenderman, to the final 1.0 release of free competitive FPS Warsaw (which people have been playing since 2005), and even some forays into freeware by big name publishers, like Capcom's backing of the fan-made Mega Man X Street Fighter made in December.

This list is a look back on the year that was; one from a slightly different perspective than 2012's many blockbuster titles would have you remember. Many of the games built here were by small teams, and even individual developers. Some do it for awareness of future projects; some do it to send updates to dying genres; some just do it for the love of video games. Each of the 10 games are still available for download at no cost, and worth experiencing for their quality, their innovation, and their fun. Enjoy!

*Disclaimer*
This is not a topic about microtransactions, free-to-play subscriptions, beta releases, or demo/lite versions of games. Each of the games represented here have launched within 2012, and are available in their entirety to be played legally for free, bar none.

Dark Tower

Turn Based Strategy
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - Yes
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Fantasy

The object of the game is to circle the board, passing through three foreign kingdoms, collecting three keys along the way. You then return to the fourth kingdom, your home kingdom, and lay siege to the brigands in the tower. When you have defeated the brigands, the game is over and you have won.

Based on Milton Bradley's Tabletop Board Game

Megazell's Comment - Man. As a kid I loved this game but never owned it. It was a game my older family members had and I could only enjoy it when I visited their homes. Shortly before I went to college the game was passed on to others in the family and over time lost pieces and deteriorated. Years later while watching a web show with Wil Wheaton he spoke about the game and a flood of memories came back about this wonderful game. I showed it to my immediate family and it's not the same but it's pretty fricking sweet!

A Mother's Inferno
Megazell's Top Pick

Adventure/First Person
Single Player - Yes
Multiplayer - No
Netbook Friendly

Theme: Horror
Theme: Lost

It is called ‘A Mother’s Inferno’. Presumably a reference to Dante’s Inferno, it is a first-person perspective passage through a personal hell by a mother who has lost her boy. It is visually and audibly painful, highly shocking and disturbing and packed with symbology it doesn’t waste time explaining. At all of 15 minutes long, it is terror and loss condensed. - Polygon.com

Thread Ideas

I am thinking about redoing the system requirements of flash and most web games. For OS I was going to put ANY - As most modern operating systems work with flash games. What say you all?

+++ Looking for some volunteers on scanning the list - I would like to assign a sub genre like say - Shooter/Vertical 2D - Then highlight for me those with Linux and Mac versions. This information will then be used to break the spoilers down a bit further by OS. PM me if interested. +++

Also I did this - http://nukezilla.com/2013/03/15/fgf-meg-and-meg-tag-team-ratz-instagib/

I'd also like you to add new genre's in your list here

Board games, Card games, Casino games. PysolFc is a great card game.

Visual Novels - Katawa Shoujo, True Remembrance, Narcissu, Brass Restoration

Board games would be a sub-genre in what section? Chances are it would be turn based but what would make a PC game a board game? Perhaps, based off of a KNOWN board game?

Card games, Casino Games would be under Strategy - Turn Based Strategy games. I don't have any so for but I will take a look at your recommendation.

Visual Novels will be under Adventure games soon enough. I take a look at the 3 your mentioned that I have not tried.

This might help:

Type Best Free Board Games in Google and take the first link from about.com . There you could see board games listed.

Also I did see your post here on "Free Lan party games" website and later on other users have requested you to categorize your games into Lan and Multiplayer. I think it would be a great idea.

I couldn't post links because the forum doesn't allow me.

narcissu, katawa shoujo and true remembrance scores pretty high ratings and is popular at vndb. They are the most popular free visual novels. Type vndb in google and go the first site, then click the subcategory visual novels to the left

Yeah - Narcissu is also listed. True Remembrance is the only one that is not. It's in the stack though.

Free Thoughts

The five reasons freemium sucks (according to QWOP's developer)

Designer Bennett Foddy of QWOP and GIRP fame counts five major reasons why the free to play model doesn't work well in its current incarnation, but suggests that by being creative with microtransactions, designers have the chance to do better work.

1. They're pay not to play, really. Foddy believes lots of freemium games give players the choice between paying or grinding -- "which suggests you might want to pay money to reduce the amount of time you spend playing the game," he notes. "Not playing the game is the 'luxury option'... [and] ultimately reduces the value players see in the game."

2. There's no level playing field. If some players are playing with different rules and others, you can't meaningfully compare their experiences. "If somebody is buying progress, or advantages from the IAP store, they're just cheating," Foddy says. "It's like you're selling players steroids to cheat with."

3. It corrupts the experience. Seeking real money from players during the gameplay breaks immersion, Foddy believes. "In my view, a really good game has a particular relationship with the player," he says. "In a freemium game, it's relating to you more as a vendor, or a drug dealer."

4. There's an irreconcilable conflict. Designing games for real money transaction from the ground up balances two incompatible aims: Making the game fun and complete for non-payers, and making it complete for people who do pay. "You're caught between a rock and a hard place," he says. "

5. You miss opportunities to be creative. "If you're selling hats, it's true you're not ruining the game for everybody, but even in that case you're still missing the opportunity to invent a way of charging people money... in a way that increases value and meaning in the game for everyone."

Some ideas that don't "totally suck"

People often defend free-to-play by comparing them to coin-op arcades, but very few people actually design games like arcades, where players pay for every life or play. "If you do that, you're charging them to pay more instead of less... and it also maintains a level playing field," Foddy suggests.

In a tournament you pay for the opportunity to log an official score -- that's another method that might work, he adds. And you can offer players rewards for playing with skills, for example: If you make a full-featured demo that stays free forever so long as you play with skill, although he admits that sort of approach might not play well among mobile apps.
"You could charge money for permanent changes to the game that apply to everybody," he says. What if everyone paying two dollars unlocks an extra difficulty level? While some of these ideas may not be allowed under Apple's terms and conditions, the goal of being creative within the free-to-play business model still applies, Foddy says.

"You're not confined to selling digital consumables to small children and idiots," he explains. "You can come up with your own thing."
