For the record, my 360 arrived in TX 5/16. I called today and the CSR told me that they had "repaired" the system and already shipped it back to me. I have a tracking number and a scheduled delivery date of 5/22.

I'll bet I will also recieve a refurb unit. If that's the case, I'm buying a 360 at WallyWorld switching the units and returning it. If they're going to inconvenience me with a fucking refurb unit with different serial numbers (ie to play XBLA games I'll need to be signed in - not a big deal but I don't always play in a room with a wired connection) I'm going to inconvenience them back. I will not stand idly while M$ flings shit in my face.
Really, that doesn't hurt MS as much as it hurts the retailer and in addition that is fraud.

They told me they will reship me back my same unit only if there's a "minor" problem with it and they can fix it real quick-like .. like if a there's a chip loose or a part deeds to be replaced (like in my case the DVD drive).
But if there's major stuff wrong (like if stuff melted) they will send me a refurb..

Well my 360 that I got at launch died today. I played the Halo 3 beta for a half hour the day it came out, then didn't touch my 360 till today. This sucks hard, and I will be bitching to M$ later today.

I feel your pain. Mine was a midnight launch console too. Get ready to pony up $140. Hopefully you won't get a sloppy CSR...mine took 3 weeks before I even got a box to ship.

And speaking of my ordeal, they got my unit on Friday afternoon , and they already emailled me and told me my 360 is on it's way back (3 day)...thus guaranteeing 'My Repaired' 360 is someone elses 'Refurbished' 360.

On the positive side, it'll be newer than my launch console...negative, I don't know where that console has been.

Whoever get's my unit referbished CONGRATZ! I took great pride in keeping it flawless!

I got home from work on Friday about 5 minutes before UPS showed up with CrapBox #4. It wasn't new, but had a later manufacture date than the last one.

Interesting thing is that I just recieved a phone call regarding "compensation". I have an extra wireless controller and a copy of Crackdown coming to me.

Not bad, I played up the fact that I had 2 weeks of during Christmas and only 3 days with my 360..........again.
I've heard of people getting their fees waived if they bitch about how good of a customer they are. Any truth to this, and if so, any tips?
ive been on the phone with customer support for the last week complaining. told them everything in the book about how good a customer I am, how I slept outside to get the damn system, how I buy games and support MS with no luck.

$140. i finally got them to offer me a 25% discount on the repair charge which is still bullshit. I am not going to fix it unless it is for free. whole thing makes me so mad. no more MS for me. I dont even want a ps3 but may get one for the hell of it.

seems like some people get lucky with the people they talk to. I have been through 3 techs and 2 supervisors with no luck... screw em
I've heard of people getting their fees waived if they bitch about how good of a customer they are. Any truth to this, and if so, any tips?
This is true. Ask to speak to a superviser once you get quoted the $140. What I basically said was that $140 was way out of my budget and that I didin't feel it was fair to pay to have my XBOX fixed when it seemed to magically break on its own. I also hinted to the fact that I've invested over $2000 into my XBOX 360 to date not including my 3 year + subscription to XBL and brought up how a billing error on their part resulted in the cancelation of my XBL account, forcing me to create a new gamertag and inconvenienced me by not being able to move my savegames and achievements.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with how customer service represntatives are trained to operate , but what it boils down to (at M$'s call centers, at least) is that they have scripts to read from. On these scripts they have the most common things that customers say, like "$140 is too much," "I'm going to buy a PS3," etc. with the recommended response. If you stay on long enough and refuse to take no for an answer they will eventually cave in or pass you onto a supervisor that might have a few brain cells and is able to help you come to a compromise without looking at a sheet first.

Mines on the way back to me, he said it was my old one, then said it look like it was a different one, I guess I'll find out on Thursday..

WTF is this...I call and get some douche dude recordings, asked him to "give me the list" of things he can help me with, then I get a recording saying nobody can help me right now...*click*

This is going to suck... Are they only open till 5 eastern or something?

Keep trying, it seems they're getting overloaded with calls thanks to the Halo Beta, I had the same thing happen to me, countless times

The trick with their automated menu systems is to either press 0 until you get conencted to an operator or to simply say operator over and over again.

It sounds stupid but it works.

FYI : http://www.gethuman.com/

On a side note, this may sound stupid but I really appreciate the existance of this thread. Not only did it let me know how many others are in the same boat as me, there are lots of people sharing worthwhile information that makes the repair process slightly less painful (it still fucking sucks). If I had it my way everyone would be able to get their repair fees waived; unfortunately that's not a realistic goal, but more people are afforded that opportunity with this thread than without. So, to the OP 53 pages back, thank you for this thread!

haha, isnt that "Max"?

(Max)What system are you calling about?

(Me)360...

(Max)I didnt catch that, what system are you calling about?

(Me)360...

(Max)Hmm, I didnt catch that, what system are you calling about?

(Me)360...

(Max)Oh, an xbox 360, Gotcha.

Why didn't you just say Xbox 360?

All you have to do to get a live person is say xbox 360... console repair status. You have to wait a few minutes, but it's a lot easier than hitting 0 hella times.

As soon as you get a person, ask to talk to a supervisor. The regular people are idiots. Well, the Supervisors are pretty stupid too, but they have more authority.

I got offered 25% off, said no and hung up. Called back a minute later, got a nice CSR, and after talking with someone she offered a 50% discount. I figure $70 isn't TOO bad, and I didn't want to balk at it and then get stuck having to pay $140 later, so I took it.

Well, I got my 360 back today. They didn't touch it and just sent it back. I guess they weren't bullshitting when they said they returned opened 360s as-is.

There goes my chance to play Halo 3 beta. :bs:

Did you open the 360 case or something?

Coffin showed up today, but the 360 has been working like a champ (occasional stuck tray). Does anyone know if the system has to be shipped back within a certain timeframe or can I hold out a few more weeks before shipping it in?

I still want to get the malfunctioning DVD drive fixed under warranty, but don't want to miss out on the rest of the beta.
Did you open the 360 case or something?
Yeah, I don't know if I mentioned it earlier in the thread, but the first couple times I called I kept getting CSRs that wouldn't waive my repair fee. I tried the heat gun fix and it didn't work. My last resort before buying a new 360 was to try calling in one more time. I got the repair fee waived but it was too little too late.

I figure I should ask here:

I plan on picking up a 360 Elite, where should I buy it at? I was thinking I should get an in-store warranty, as it seems the Microsoft variety is for the most part useless. And I'll probably want to switch the console in the Fall for a system with the newer chipset.

Perhaps get a 1 year warranty, switch the console, and then get a new warranty on that new machine? I imagine I can't transfer the warranty over to that new console.

Has to be sent in within 30 days of the first phonecall, as that is when the repair ticket expires and they have to create a new one.

Update on my process:

5/10 - Placed Initial Call
5/17 - Received Coffin
5/17 - Shipped Dead Console to Microsoft
5/22 - Dead Console Delivered to Microsoft
5/23 - Console Shipped back to me

Expected UPS Delivery - 5/29
So far so good, just hope they sent me back a good console.

hey, my 360 isn't dead but has anyone had problems with their vision camera? All the sudden the other day it started flickering on and off and now it just won't come on at all. I tried all the USB ports and have no response from any of them. The camera hasn't been moved once since I bought it. It still looks prsitine, I'm not quite sure what the problem is.

Mine broke down on Saturday night, moments before I was about to watch a pornographic DVD in it (karma?). I finally got around to calling for my 2nd coffin today, since my previous effort yesterday was thwarted by someone in frickin' New Delhi who barely had a grasp of the english language. Thankfully, today, I talked to someone who could actually piece together coherent sentences. God I love outsourcing.

sent my coffin off yesterday after waiting a week for the box to arrive. it's finally in texas and should be at the repair place by tomorrow.

The new chipset is highly overrated ;). While it may improve reliability in the long run (though who knows what NEW issues these might have ), it will do nothing to fix the major problem with the system - drive noise. Don't forget the new chipset is designed to save Microsoft money, not provide any specific benefit to the end user. My Elite is perfectly quiet when playing XBLA games, but noisy as hell when playing disc games. I've gotten somewhat used to it, but it is jarring when I play the Wii or PS2 and can actually hear all of the game sounds without the constant drive noise in the background.

Mine has gotten a TON of play in the month I've had it and so far has held up just fine. Beyond a few initial Elite failures (well documented on the web) I wonder how the systems are holding up otherwise? Perhaps they did increase the reliability just a tad ;).

Anyway, as for warranties - I'm not sure how those work. In general, I don't think you can simply bring them back for new systems whenever you want, can you? I have a 2 year extended warranty through Gamecrazy (only because they made me buy it with the launch day Elite - normally I'd tell them to shove it, but I drove all the way across town to get it and paid for it almost entirely with trade-in credit so the extra $40 was no big deal). At least I can forgo the MS extra year of warranty...

Reading thru all this makes me glad to have gotten mine at costco where i can walk in with the system and say its broken and i need it replaced

Yeah but apparently they don't let you keep your original hardrive.
Reading thru all this makes me glad to have gotten mine at costco where i can walk in with the system and say its broken and i need it replaced
Do you get some kind of sick satisfaction from coming into the threads for broken 360s and rubbing in the fact that your CostCo-purchased XBOX360 is invincible?

Just for that, I hope yours spontaneously combusts, igniting close-by draperies and taking out your home along with your original recepit so that you can't claim your return.

And just to be sure of it, the fire would spread all the way to CostCo's data centers, wiping out all of their archived purchase history.

Yeah, that will teach you to stop prancing about like a happy little retard, gloating about how you're smarter than all of us.
Yeah but apparently they don't let you keep your original hardrive.
i had a friend who actually bought another 360 from costco, so he could swap it out the hard drives and return his busted 360 with a newer hard drive.

Well, she started acting up again, so I said hel with it and tossed it in the coffin. Gonna drop it at the UPS store on the way to go see Pirates.

I'm glad I got the old xbox running last night.

Nooooooo! 3 red lights of death! :whistle2:(

Time to call M$ in the morning...so if I say I got the 3 red lights, they'll automatically send me a box to ship it in?

I had to just call mine in today. I had the red rings a week or so ago it seems. Anyways, towel trick the thing to death, and yes, they will send you a box to ship it it (however, the lady said there is a cost for UPS or Fed Ex to pick it up from my house.. I don't use those two services so don't know of the specifics, but I have no problems driving to the nearest facility to save a few bucks, even though gas is a few bucks.. hmmm)

LOL you are too funny

Hey guys,

My 360 let me down on yesterday (4/25) the first day of a four day weekend for me. I was playing COD3 and the graphics got all grainy and black and white all of a sudden so I shut the system off. When I turned it back on I had one red light and E74 error code.

I had a lot of trouble proving that I was the original owner of the console. I'm in the military and have moved around a alot since I bought it at launch and had to keep guessing at addresses until I got it right. I am in Okinawa Japan right now and had to call using my VOIP wireless phone. After all the address guessing, my phone's battery died and I had to wait to call back and do it all over again.

I finally got the address taken care of and the CSR told me that they would pay for shipping back to my address from the repair facility but that since I was in Japan they would not be sending me a box with free shipping. I tried arguing for a little while about how it was unfair blah blah blah and got 25% off.

I mailed it today 4/25 so wish me luck.

So I called in this morning and they said that I needed to register my console first? The lady told me that it is already registered by her and said to call back within 48 hours (I'm guessing after Memorial Day) and use the reference number so they can further process my request.

I cool with that for now since this 360 kinda worked this morning once I turned it on.

Hate to be a noob, but what is the towel trick? I'll do that for now till they send me the coffin.
what is the towel trick? I'll do that for now till they send me the coffin.
Without having to link to my site as not to upset the other viewers, I will just type it out fresh for you, as I just did it (again) last night.

Take two regular or beach sized towels. Take one, fold it over or what not so its twice as thick, lay it down. Take your 360 (Id pop off your hard drive as a precaution), lay it down on the towel. With that first towel underneath the 360, try and wrap it up around the 360 as much as you can, without losing that thickness you got from folding it over. Take the second towel, fold over once to make it thick, now put it on top of the 360 and wrap it around to pretty much seal it in. Turn it on, and take a look at your clock. Now the amount of time spent here varies for everyone. I have done it for 15 minutes and it worked. And I have also done it for 28 minutes (forgot it was there while doing something else) and it still recovers. Anyways, for 20-25 minutes, let it bake.

Now, turn it off, and unplug everything. Your brick power cable, everything, unplug from the walls, turn off all the power in your house just in case. Now wait roughly 30 minutes or so.

Bam, working Xbox 360.

Reasoning behind it all: When the 360 are produced, a piece inside is not soldered on correctly or some crap, so when you heat it up, you are melting it back down in place or some crap.... and then the cooling period makes sure it stays in place (excuse my scientific vernacular terms such as 'some crap', I am trying to make this for the laymen).

There is some web site in my signature that has all this plus pictures and even a video tutorial. Also, you can google search and probably find some other peoples writings as well. I got my help mainly from the official Xbox Forums as well as the good people at the Destructoid.com forums.

Good luck!

Has anybody else tried sending in a 360 with a broken seal (my launch unit is sitting broken and opened in the corner of my room because I can't decide whether or not to do the heat gun thing)

I have since bought a new one from BB with 2 year PRP, so I'm just trying to decide how best to fix my fairly large paperweight.

well my third 360 broke this morning. havent played it in a few days. no usb function now. garbage.
on a side note, i have exchanged my last 3 through best buy within the manufacturers warranty period, (which is a benefit of their prp) i got a call last night askign how my expereince was using the prp. they better not have exchanged the last one under my prp as that would be the one time use. i have a good feeling im gonna have some fun at bb this morning.

wow, I did the towel trick...it did work but not for long.

After about 5 minutes, heard this buzz sound then my system froze.

I one red ring, then just waited out for about 30 minutes, turned it back on then 3 red rings.

Oh well, I tried....gotta wait til Tuesday then.

After speaking to a number of CSRs who told me I could not get mine repaired for free, I figured I had nothing else to lose, so I opened mine up, replaced the thermal compound with Arctic Silver 5 and tried the heat gun trick). Still didn't work. I saw this thread and noticed that people were getting the fee waived. I called in again, got the fee wavied, sent in the box and got it back, untouched, a week later.

Moral of the story, they're not joking when they say that they refuse opened consoles.

My 360 died after 6 months of light use on Friday 05/25/07. The coffin was ordered within the first hour of passing. Now I sit and wait for the hearst to bring my coffin. Time to fire up some games on the DS, Wii or PC. Sigh, I miss my 360 already. I hope we remember each other in a few weeks.

Got an email today.. My system (hopefully mine, not a refurb) was sent out on Friday and should be here Thursday at the latest..

quick question, im considering buying a 360 this week... so i was wondering where is the best place to buy it in terms of warranty? seems like best buy is hit or miss with their prp. When/If my 360 breaks I want to be able to swap in store, rather than go through microsoft.

any help would be appreaciated, thanks
