Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Disclaimer: This list is intended to help all guide hunters. Please feel free to print yourself a copy and get what you can find. Please do not post this list on another site. {e-mail me please if for some reason you would want to. [email protected]} Please just link to this thread, add to this list and help it grow. Thank you
Best Buy is starting to get smart, I think.
I hate it when the big evil corporation starts to get too smart for its own good. "Yes, I'd rather destroy merchandise than sell it to you for next to nothing. No customer will get good deals from me. Muh, ha, ha, ha, ha. . ." :D

From what I remember, if they rip the cover off and send it back to the distrubutor, they get credited for those guides from the company.

Actually selling them for .01 is what loses them money, in the long haul, since they don't get credit for it.

Picked up the only 2 penny guides on the floor... both SC:CT. I figured that if the floor staff got wind of one left, they would've destroyed the last one. I asked one rep about why the Geneva, IL store is different than others in the area. He claims that because it is a "small" store, they ship the guides back instead of selling them. Where other BBs in the area will tag them 0.01 and put them on the shelves. For the stores that pitch them, he said they are on the shelves for only one day.

Makes me wonder why they even drop it to $0.01 in any case. Seems to make more sense to go and just send out an email/memo/fax/whatever that Guides XX, YY, ZZ, etc., are to be pulled and shipped back.

You don't need to give them any ideas. :)

Anyone have a mint condition Minish Cap guide for trade? I picked up a sealed Jade Empire guide I'd like to swap. Please PM me if you're interested.

Is there a trading tread specific to guides? Couldn't find one in the forum.

Anyway, I'll be happy to ship first, provided you've got a good feedback rating.
You don't need to give them any ideas. :)
Trust me, if they wanted to listen to ideas from me on how to make their operations better, that wouldn't be any part of it. ;)

It's an observation more than giving them ideas. It just doesn't seem to make any sense to go through all those gyrations, and do it so inconsistantly.
So, even if they are marked $16 bucks they are still a penny? if that's the case...my best buy near me has 6 jade empires. and is pokemon leafgreen and zelda: four swords a penny?
Depends.... sometimes they are still marked $16... other times the shelf will have a label advertising 1-cent... some stores don't mind selling them while other BB's are real anal about doing so (like the one time they grabbed my Paper Mario out of my hands). YMMV.

I think .01 cents is some kind of code to be destroyed.

I know if a price generally ends in xx.96, then that means clearance. I assume that .01 is merchandise to be destroyed. When TRU's green tag sale items hit .01, that was all merchandise to be destroyed as well.

It's mostly all about luck, half the time.

What I have noticed is that Best Buy hasn't gotten in any guides since Midnight Club 3.. are they not going to sell them anymore, or has no game come out since MC 3 thats guide worthy?

If I had to guess at the next drop in a few months, it's Forza, Call of Duty, Star Wars Ep 3, Doom 3, maybe Halo 2 and God of War, and Four Swords.

What I'm waiting for is the TRU drop, since it's alot easier to get guides over there.
I am just catching up on the thread, but I only saw 6 new ones listed. What is the 7th?

The Urbz
Star Fox Assault
Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Jade Empire
Madden 2005
???
I'm sorry... I must have counted Splinter Cell: Pandora Tommorow as part of the new stash... I'm guessing that was part of an old drop. I asked the BB guy to scan about 7 random guides for me. They all turned out to be full price except for Splinter Cell: Pandora Tommorow.

That might make sense that they're not going to carry them anymore, since most of them only have a shelf life of a few months, then they're kicked to the curb. It's space they can use for widening their game collection.

I know I'd be all over CoD, Doom 3, GoW and SW:Ep3 guides.

I wonder why CC doesn't do something like this with their guides. I never see them discussed in this type of situation.

I was at CC for the clearance sale, and saw guides for Metal Gear Solid 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament. I was excited, and told my gf "Wow, these HAVE to be .01, what a sweet deal!!"

She comes back and tells me they are 14.99 each... I was pretty confused.

Target dosen't penny out guides either I believe... I think they just throw them out? One Target had a stack of older guides for sale, all full price as well.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I think it dropped before. Congrats on finding all those. I may check tonight for Jade Empire and Minish Cap...and Chaos Theory...who am I kidding, I'll grab one of any penny guide I find (the exception being the pokemon guides in the last round of drops).

I noticed the same thing too. One of my local BB's reduced their guides section by about 60%. They used to have 2 different locations on 2 different aisles for guides but now they utilize most of that space for games (to make way for DS, PSP and eventually the next-gen consoles).

So I'm assuming their demphasizing the guides now... i doubt it's a huge money maker. I'm sure when people buy them, BB's strikes gold since people pay $17 for a guide (that's almost as much as the game in some cases). But most of the time, they just seem to sit on the shelf and gather dust, space that could be used for items that move... so many Madden 2005, Halo 2... some sell I'm sure but most never move.

I'm waiting for Forza and Midnight Club Dub myself, those games need guides... I can't believe I missed out on RE4 though. I was there when they first dropped but couldn't find any at 4 BB's.

I'm still amazed at the guides that have still survived this price drop. Urbz finally dropped, but I still have two sonic heroes guides in my store that I've been waiting on, and a morrowind GOTY guide which I don't even think they sell the game for anymore. My store started labeling them 1 cent though so I'm glad I made it before people actually noticed that the guides were pennied. Picked up two of each except for minish cap(only had one) and madden 05(I didn't want one, so I picked it up for trade fodder at my local store.)

Damn. I didn't know about this until after I got home from Best Buy today. The only ones they had priced at .01 were the Urbz and Star Fox and they were all out of Star Fox.

I hope I can track down a Jade Empire....

I've been waiting on that Morrowind GOTY Edition guide hit a penny, though when I found a completely pristine one on the shelf, I picked it up with a GGC for $14.99. I didn't want to take a chance that it would disappear at $0.01, which now seems to be the way it happens.

I managed to pick up 2 copies of Jade Empire and Star Fox. I will trade or sell the extra copies. Here is my tradelist.

Has the God of War guide been pennied out? I don't remember seeing any at my BB for a while. I'm also waiting for GS or EB to penny out the Xenosaga II Limited Edition guide.

God of War hasn't been pennied out... I think TRU might penny it out first.

I would be interested in a Zelda guide and a Star Fox guide since I don't have a Best Buy anywhere near me.

If anyone has them and would be interested in two guides I have (link in my sig) and would be interested in trading snail mail drop me a PM :)

were those at the jefferson point store ¿? and was that all that was left ¿? Northcrest is clean and I was pondering heading over to jefferson pointe but if its clean you could save me some trouble. Thanks.
please forgive me, but what guides were added to the over-all list?
Best Buy:
The Urbz
Star Fox Assault
Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Jade Empire
Madden 2005

It was just one page back.

Edit: Woohoo, I beat floormat. That's what you get for including the publisher ;).

Best Buy .01

Jade Empire - Prima
Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap - Nintendo
Madden 2005 - Prima
Sims: Urbz, The - Prima
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory - Prima
Star Fox Assault - Nintendo

Got in on all of the guides except Madden (oddly the one of least value). I need to update my tradelist.

There were extras of Urbz, SC Chaos, Jade Empire . . . but it sounded like the clerk was going to get them herself

Only one Minish Cap :whistle2:(

I checked the Morrowwind myself . . . not on discount.

I went after I got off work, expecting everything to be picked over. On the contrary, they had everything I was looking for, and they were even tagged .01. I got:

Minish Cap - x1
Urbz - x2
Madden - x3 (they had a TON of these...)
Jade Empire - x2
Starfox - x2

The only one I didn't see was Splinter Cell, but I had no interest in that one anyway.

BTW, quick question. I noticed there are 2 different Jade Empire guides - one has a red background & the other blue (on the cover). Anyone know if there's any other difference besides the cover? I'll keep one of each for collector's purposes if so. But I don't want to open the blue one (it's shrink-wrapped) to see and find out it's the same, since I'm sure if I traded it to someone they'd prefer it was still sealed.

Huh? Never seen this myself. Only 2 versions of the Jade Empire guide that I have seen both had the blue cover but one came with a supplemental DVD which has a red spine as opposed to the blue spine on the regular guide that doesn't come with the DVD. Maybe Prima did do yet another cover of the guide to match the LE version of the game, but I for one never saw it at any BB/GS/EB in all my travels. Wonder if it's a regional thing or something.

All gone when I looked...but I did pick up Astro Boy for PS2 instead. Sucky game but it's free with the $5 coupon.

Two Best Buy stores that I went to only had Urbz and Star Fox guides.

Between the two of them, I picked up 3 copies of each, plus a bigger surprise, an Onimusha 3 guide (non-LE version). Said Onimusha guide has a price verification printout taped to the back of it, showing it to be $0.01. Dated 02/28/05.

If anyone wants either of those two guides, or the Onimusha 3 guide, PM me.

anyone wanna trade some guides to me for one of these games:
x-men next dimension xbox *like new
sega soccer slam xbox *mint
rainbow six 3 gcn *mint

maybe 3-4 guides per game
looking for:
gta san andreas xb
jade empire
minish cap
any zelda guide
RE4

anyone interested PM me
That might make sense that they're not going to carry them anymore, since most of them only have a shelf life of a few months, then they're kicked to the curb. It's space they can use for widening their game collection.

I know I'd be all over CoD, Doom 3, GoW and SW:Ep3 guides.

I wonder why CC doesn't do something like this with their guides. I never see them discussed in this type of situation.
I don't think CC has pennied more than maybe 10 guides in almost 2 years. I just checked each one my store has in stock Saturday night and nothing. I still have a Madden 2004 at full price in my store.

You need either one of the guides I picked up, neocisco? Yours for free, for the good CC advice, if you need either one or both.

Thank you VERY MUCH for the offer but the only ones I need are Jade Empire and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. I went to BB after leaving work early yesterday but they closed an hour before us. I tried again today, nothing. I think this is 3x now that they've jumped right on it and gotten rid of the guides. I know about 15 people who work there (none in music/games) all from working w/them at CC. We lose about 1 person a month to them. Thanks again for the offer, I appreciate it.

I think elprincipe has 'em, and I've dealt with him before, good guy. Right over here:

I had my best penny guide haul yet(I actually got all of the guides that were pennied out this time, plus a guide that I didn't know they still had). I got:
1x LotR: TTA
2x The Urbz
2x Madden 2005
2x Jade Empire
1x Legend of Zelda: Minish Cup
1x Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
2x Star Fox: Assault

The Coral Ridge best buy an another Star Fox, another LotR, and about 15 more Maddens.
The casher asked me why the guides were a penny, and I told him that BB sometimes clears them out to make room for new guides. He thought that was cool and took my 12 cents. :D

I just hope Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth and Morrowind GotY drops soon. My BB has some of those.

Well, if anyone has an extra Jade Empire, I'd do a 2 for 1 trade.

Pick any two (including what I said in an earlier post) and I'll trade them for a Jade Empire.

Pm me :)

I went to the Hickory Hollow (Nashville) BB tonight. The guides have been pulled, but are up by the register near the exit. I got the last Minish Cap, and there weren't any Splinter Cells, but they have tons of Maddens, some Star Fox, one or two Jade Empire, and several Urbz. There are also a few Tekkens in the guide section.

I've been waiting for Minish Cap to drop to a penny so I can add it to my Zelda guide collection, making it a total of two guides in my collection. :D

I know my Best Buy won't have it though... they never do have penny guides.
Any Raleigh, NC CAGs probably need not bother trying to get these guides. Some kind person liberated their local BB of everything :

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=15121&item=8203342857
Thanks. It looks like you did indeed save me a trip :(

Sadly those will probably all sell @6.00 a pop, and $3.99 shipping. ugh.

At least I know how to spot these jerks on ebay now.

Heh, this person was nice enough to pass on this great deal to us!:
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZedlynnphoto

and check out the description:
Due to limited shelf space at a local video game store, and a big upcoming shipment they were expecting, I was able to obtain several video game strategy guides dirt cheap... Including these seven brand new copies of the official Tekken 5 Strategy Guide, which come complete with a huge double sided poster! Of course I don't need this many but the deal was take 'em all or leave 'em, so I took 'em! I decided to keep one for myself and put the rest up on eBay to pass along my great deal to all you fine folks! When you get your Tekken 5 strategy guide you'll notice that it still has the store's $16.99 price tag on it that proves this guide sells in stores all over America for WAY more than you'll pay for it! Not only that, but if you went to buy it in the store you'd have to drive there (burning gas that costs a fortune these days) and when you got to the store you'd pay that really steep seventeen bucks for the guide - so with gas and such your cost would be about $20.00 I figure... But you can get this game guide with shipping & handling for only $8.99! That's right, you'll pay only $4.99 for the guide and $4.00 shipping for this BRAND NEW strategy guide that sells in stores all over the USA for $16.99! That's LESS THAN HALF what you'd pay for the same guide that came from the store! And just like the ones at the store, this one is BRAND NEW and in excellent condition (shows only very minor shelf wear, like any you see in a store). What a great deal!

Nothing at the Tallahassee BB. They used to be fully stocked when these drops were announced but the last two times they have been completely cleared out. Looks like the employees might actually be doing there job. I did see a Madden 05 guide but it was the Collector's Edition. Is that one a penny too?

Nope, tried it out yesterday, Madden CE is still 25 bucks.

The Madden 2005 CE is 0.01 at EBGames. I found one at a mall store about 2 weeks ago.
