Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Master list in post 2
is star wars clone wars a penny at best buy?
That guide was $4.99 for the longest time...But since I don't see it on the BB website anymore maybe it has finally been pennied out.

At my best buy, in the back in the junkout section we had a cart that merch brought to us, it had about 50 Madden 2005 guides, 3x jade empire guides, 1x xenosaga II guide, and since all were junkout they are going to waste...shame, would've liked to have picked up all 3 for 1 cent each.

does anybody think they will drop the special edition guide to Madden?
The one with the foil cover, I asked the price and rang up for $24.99.

A question: does anyone know why circuit city dosen't penny out their guides?

I've found guides of Tekken Tag Tournament, Super Mario Advance 4 and numerous other old guides, and they all came up 14.99.

I see 5 guides there have ever gotten pennied out... what the hell are they going to do with them?
is star wars clone wars a penny at best buy?
It was $2.99 last time I checked but I haven't checked it since the new round of penny guides.

Thanks to the OP for the heads up on this sale. I didn't hear about last year's sale until I missd out on Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and Capcom vs. SNK 2. Argh.
Anyway, this time I was fortunately able to find exactly was I was looking for and a couple extras for friends. Plus, I finally lucked out and caught the last copy of Socom w/ mic after it finally got corrected in CC's system. To bad my backlog of games is at an all-time high.
Here's a good one.

When I made a trip out to a CC that I don't normally frequent, I found that they built a new BB a few blocks away. Stuck my head in there and the only game guides they had were Pokemon Emerald, and they were just sitting on the bottom of the shelf, not up in any of the racks or with the game.

I'm still sticking to my thought that BB is going to stop carrying game guides.
No way they quit carrying them. They make too much money on them, even at the 1 cent price. When the guides go to a penny, the publishers reimburse Best Buy so they actually make a profit (a few bucks is better then nothing) on all the penny guides if they sell them. Plus they figure that people that save on a guide will spend the money elsewhere (meaning on another game or whatnot) so they make even more.

The new Best Buys aren't going to carry pennied out guides when they open their doors. For example, if a new Best Buy opened today, they wouldn't have the Mercenaries and Jade Empire guides on the shelf.

That's what I've been thinking as well, because with a few exceptions, my BB has NO guides in the store. They only have a few for the big name releases, and those are sitting on the rack with the game, there is no strategy guide section any more (PSP stuff is where they used to be at my store)

I'd imagine they don't make as much money off them as you would think... from my times of working at Best Buy, I never once saw anyone buy a guide, and you aren't pressured into it like you are at EB / Gamestop.

The basacially sit on the shelf, take up a ton of room that Best Buy could use for products that sell, until they penny them out and a ton of people / employees swoop on them for a huge loss. The publishers reimburse Best Buy for the covers that get sent back, if I remember correctly - I'd imagine a very very small number of covers actually makes it back.

Alot of retail stores have cut back on their guides significantly - they just aren't needed these days, and most people don't want to pay 14.99 (hell, Best buy charges 16.99!!!) for a guide full of stuff that's on the internet.

Best Buy knows by now that most people that buy a guide, are just buying the guide and leaving - so they aren't making any money.

To be honest I buy guides more for the art inside them than the guide itself. On the odd occasion when I get stuck and can't figure something out I go to Gamefaqs.
does anybody think they will drop the special edition guide to Madden?

I got one of those when it was pennied out at EB a little bit ago.

If I really like a particular game, I enjoy having the guide to go with it (for all the secrets, unlockables, etc.) even if I've already completed the game.
If I really like a particular game, I enjoy having the guide to go with it (for all the secrets, unlockables, etc.) even if I've already completed the game.
Yes, but would you honestly pay 14.99 for said guide, or the 16.99 Best Buy charges?

I'd pay, at the max, 5.99 for a guide... 14.99 is extreme overkill and it's starting to show.
To be honest I buy guides more for the art inside them than the guide itself. On the odd occasion when I get stuck and can't figure something out I go to Gamefaqs.
This is true of me as well. I really love books in general and game guides are just nifty books to me (Nintendo ones and Brady guides being the better . . . Prima often just sucking . . . although the SC Chaos and Jade Emp. Primas seem like Brady guides).

I rarely use them but they can come in handy . . . often they just expand on the game I'm playing with nice maps and all.

I also agree that $5-6 would make them a likely purchase for me. As is, I have no problem paying $2-3 for them used.

Does anyone have the Primal guide for trade???

I agree that on the price. For trades, those cost me about $5. That's for a padded envelope and media mail shipping with delivery confirmation. That's a lot better than paying $16 that BB wants.

I really like books. My collection is between 3 and 5 hundred books. Most of them are hardbacks. I've gotten them from used book stores, garage sales, and http://www.sfbc.com. I try to get those books for cheap too. Retail for most hardbacks is atleast $20-25.

I was at the mall today - and decided to go to my EBGames, just to check out whatever. I then remembered about the penny guides- but I didn't remember which guides were exactly on sale.
Anywho - I picked up Megaman 8 for $3.99 =) I got some guides by taking a ton of them and asking for price checks - the people there know me so I guess they were cool with it. I got some guides that I didn't see on the EB games penny guide master list. FF:CC , Final Fantasy 1 and 2 Dawn Of Souls, and Metroid Prime.
I got 10 FF:CC , 5 FF 1 & 2 and 5 MP guides. I got them all for free since the guy figured they would be too much work to ring up.
Anyway - I'm not a hoarder as I said before and I got the extra's in case anyone is interested in trading - there were 33 FF:CC guides left, and 5 each of FF1&2 and MP. If anyone is interested or is in or Around New Jersey - the place is an EB Games located on the second floor of the Jersey Garden's mall. They also had Tomba for 17.99

I also get guides more for the concept art that is inside, or sometimes because of the cool posters or inserts as well. Never really for game info - as I either figure it out as I go along or I check out Gamefaqs ' '

It might be worth it for you guys to go rummage through Circuit City -

I just scored F-Zero GX for .01 and Metal Gear Soild 2 for 1.68 I believe. These are incredibly old drops, yet my CC still had this stuff.

Metroid Fusion came up as 4.99, unless there was some combo Prime / Fusion guide that's 1.68 at Circuit City.... other than that , the OP may be wrong.

fiddle. This is why I'd like CAG to have major news/updates to send out text messages to cell phones.

I snoozed, I loozed. Stopped at BB this morning, the guides had been pulled. I asked the clerk if they had been pulled and tossed out back. He said they were pulled and were moved, but he could't find them. He asked some of the other staff, and no one knows what happened to 'em. I'm guessing someone bought the whole ton of them. =\

I have a question about those penny guides you guys are able to find. Are they usually located in the same location as full priced guides with old price tags or do you find them in a separate location with signs saying they are penny guides?

I don't think they're advertised by the store.
I had gone into my EB saying "Wow - I hope there are no CAG'ers in my neighborhood" and then I saw a bunch guides on the ground under a shelf of games. Since it was a surprise trip to EB I didn't have a list of pennyguides so I picked up a bunch of random ones that I had remembered reading about and asked the guy there to do a price check. The Paper Mario came out to 14.99, but the FF:CC came out to .01 and the guy turned to me like this O_O "How did you know that?" and I shrugged and said "can I take more" and he nodded and said "Take all of them o-o"
But I didn't - figuring I could buy a few and then inform other CAG's ^_^ If there's no one in the area however I may go back and just buy up the rest ' '
But yeah, they had some old Metroid Prime guides as well - all these guides were on a stack on the floor beneath the shelf of games - and the casheir ended up just giving them to me for free ^_^
Wait a sec, they tear the covers off of the guides when they penny them out? Or how does the whole thing work...
From what I've heard here, they rip the covers off and send the covers back to the manufacturer. They get some money back for doing this. I've heard that other stores also do this with magazines.
I agree that on the price. For trades, those cost me about $5. That's for a padded envelope and media mail shipping with delivery confirmation. That's a lot better than paying $16 that BB wants.

I save nearly every box and padded envelope that enters the house (pisses off my wife) . . . this saves me shelling out for packing materials . . . so, a guide trade is $2.50ish

What happened to the Tales of Symphonia strategy guide? AFAIK, it didn't get pennied out, yet I haven't seen it retail in a long long time.

Today I went to my local Best Buy to search for penny guides. There is one guide still available: Spryo: A Hero's Tail. I asked them to do a price check and it's 0.01. But the guy at Best Buy didn't believe the price so he scanned several more times. I asked him if I could buy the guide for 0.01. At first he didn't seem to want to sell it. He asked me where I found the guide. I pointed the way. Then he went to their computer and check Best Buy web site for the price. Finally, he went and asked his manager about it. All this time, I was wondering if Spryo guide is worth the wait. He finally came back and told me his manager said it's ok and I can buy it for 0.01.

Me too. Less perfectly usable padded envelopes in the landfill as well.
Where are the TOS guides pennied? I can't find them on the list? I'm asking because I saw a few TOS guides at both of the EB's near me ' '
Haven't seen any reports of TOS guides being pennied. Hopefully someone with EB info will get us that quickly when it does drop because I really want one as well.

Ahh - alright - because I as it stands the EB TOS guides are not pennied out. I managed to pick up some more pennied guides today ^_^ Some more FF I&II DOS guides =)

ElPrincipe - I've seen you on the NES and SNES boards on Gamefaqs right?

I went to 3 BB's and found copies of FF Crystal Chronicles guide but when I scanned it, it rang up $14.99. Isn't the penny guides for all stores? This is also the case for EB...argh!
Has Resident Evil: Outbreak File #2 pennied out?

I saw it today at Bestbuy but they no longer advertise it on their website.
It can't be already, the first one just pennied out about a month ago.

It's not a penny at EBGames anymore? I'm pretty sure it should be - as I bought a few in two different EB locations...
My local BB pulled all the recent penny guides. Looks like a habit for them now, thanks to the hoarders.
Has nothing to do with hoarders, and is more about policy.

I don't know, but the ones around my house AND work ( in Wayne, NJ & Bridgewater/Woodbridge, NJ) but the Best Buys AND EB Games do not have $0.01 guides, they still ring up full price. >.

Hmm - we're close enough in terms of geographic location for that not to happen I think ' '
In any case- the EBGames in Linden and Elizabeth still have them for a penny as far as I know >_>

Yep, I've been there and still go there sometimes. They are at least somewhat civil, not bad if you avoid the idiots on the next generation message boards there. It's fashionable to, let's say, intensely dislike Gamefaqs here and I understand that sentiment, but the NES board there and a couple of others are actually all right places.

No, my Best Buy said it's because of people coming in and buying 50 guides. Therefore....

hoarders.

Today I went to my local EBgames and found Metroid Prime 2 : Echoes from Nintendo Power for $7.99. It's not as good of a deal as penny guide. But I noticed the master list has a section for EBGames' 7.99 guide. Metroid Prime 2 is not listed there yet, so I thought I should mention it in case anyone else is interested in getting this guide.

I went to EB this morning to look around. I notice 3 Madden 2005 Collector's Edition and one FF:CC guide, but I didn't pick them up since I wasn't sure. I'm going to go back in an hour and try to pick up all of them.

Best Buys will pull them for BOTH reasons... hoarders and policy... just depends on where you go

I personally never bought more than 8 or 9 at a time, and always left extras in the racks... I hope my BB gets lax again about the penny guides... they went a few cycles last year where they pulled the guides immediately, then around the holidays, were more forgetful up until this last round of drops... which sucks because I had my eye on the SC:CT and Jade Empire guides... they still left behind a couple LOTR:3A guides from the previous drops though...
is jade empire,tekken5,hitman 2 and star wars 3 guides pennied out in toyrus?
Not yet.

We know in advance when the guides are pennied out at TRU.. they drop prices on Thursday, and the employees who work there let us know of the drops by Monday usually.
