Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Master list in post 2
Not even worth the time it takes to check with GS... I can't believe 4 stores all told me the same thing, that they were already pulled and they couldn't sell them.

Kind of seems like a huge waste... even if companies marked them down to 4.99 I guarantee alot of people would head out and buy them.

Luckily I bought the Street Fighter Anniversary guide a long time ago, because that is probably one of the best guides I've ever seen, espically for a fighting game.
I've never gotten a penny guide at GS or EB . . . they seem to be the best (or worst) at pulling them.

Best Buy and TRU . . . I've done well most drops.

Same here... and if you do find them at BB or TRU they will sell them to you. One employee at a Gamestop even told me "Man, we just pulled them today... we've got some in the back, but I can't sell them to you, since they are pennied and we have to destroy them" when I asked about Ace Combat 5.

I think unless you're a Gamestop employee, or really good friends with one, you can count on not getting these guides.

I've had good luck at TRU and some with BB until recently. Only one penny guide at a GS; the guy there was really helpful, but reluctant. Other GS's, no luck... one is always pretty much a tight-ass.

EB, however, has been fantastic. One manager let me pick and choose. Another store just handed me the penny guides. I try to make EB my main store.

eb, futureshop and best buy canada all clearance the guides at 95 cents. The guides aren't gone instantly, but they go quick enough and they at least get something in return.

Yeah, but isn't 95 cents Canadian about the same as 1 penny American? JK, couldn't resist the cheap shot at Canadian "money".

I dont normally go to Gamestop for guides given the amount of failure people have had with them. However, since I had today off I decided to go ahead and try. Went to one and found one guide for each of the following: Ace Combat 5, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, and Tak and the Power of JuJu (an old pennied guide). Lady said she'd sell them to me, but she had to rip the cover off. Oh well... I'll take them anyway I can.

Then I went to another gamestop only 3 blocks away, in the mall. There I found about 6 guides. Call of Duty, another Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm (old penny guide), Shark Tale (old penny guide), and Burnout 3. He said he hadn't finished pulling all the guides so I was lucky I came in when I did. Oh yeah, and he left the covers on. woohoo!

Last I stopped in EB right next door and grabbed Project Snowblind and FF:CC.

Tried Best Buy, but nothing there... I figured they wouldn't since last time I stopped in 1-2 weeks ago, they had already pulled everything. Oh well.

Overall a great guide day. I should take off of work more often. Anyways, if anyone wants to trade for project snowblind (back cover ripped), PoP:SoT (front cover missing, or FF:CC, send me a PM.

That strikes me as odd. I understand the tearing of the covers, but at that point, I would think she'd have given them to you. Ringing them up after destroying them seems to defeat the purpose.
It looks like both GS stores pulled these guides in Fort Wayne, IN. I was really wanting that Shadow Hearts Covenant guide.
yea i went over to both of them Weds night after i heard the price drop. They said the pulled and destoryed them weds morning

Damn, I was searching at a GS out of town and found a pile of the penny guides (set aside, I guess). The manager jumped on me and said they couldn't be sold and had to be destroyed . . . I think they might have been for an employee.

Anyway, anyone have GTA double for trade (maybe others)
CML (I have quite a few and may trade 2 for GTA)
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36138

BTW, I fucking hate GS . . .

well walked into bb today , found jade empire. metal gear acid, star wars commando, star fox assault, silent hill 4, all for penny.
So what's the chance of me calling Gamestop and them holding the guides for me until tommorrow morning?

EDIT: Too late, Gamestop is telling me that "sorry, we don't carry those anymore, effective today, actually".

Two Gamestop's have told me the same thing... one even told me it got pennied out so they had to send them back. Scratch that... all four Gamestop's that supposedly had Ace Combat 5 have told me it's either out of stock or was shipped back to the publisher.

If somebody can get extras of Ace Combat 5, holla at me.
That's not a good idea. The employees might keep them for themselves if they didn't already know know or sent them back.
That's not a good idea. The employees might keep them for themselves if they didn't already know know or sent them back.
I don't have the gas or the time to drive all over two cities looking for penny guides that have been probably been pulled before the store opened. I never asked for the specific guide, the stores I called I asked just for Ace Combat 5, and almost every store told me "we no longer stock that guide" and one of them even told me it was pennied out and destroyed.

I never mentioned penny guides or anything, just the name of a guide... GS computers are so shitty they would have to actually look at the rack and find it, but the conversation never went that far, all the employees immediately knew what I was talking about as soon as I mentioned Ace Combat 5.

GS is meticulous about their penny guides, so it's highly unlikely they didn't know... that's why only one or two people so far have been able to find anything - if this was Best Buy or TRU, tons of CAG's would have find guides plus plenty of extras.
yea i went over to both of them Weds night after i heard the price drop. They said the pulled and destoryed them weds morning
I guess I'm going to do a little DD over at that one GS. I just got to find the right time to go. I wonder if they just did some damage to the cover or really destroyed them?

I lucked out and found one copy of the Shadow Hearts Covenant guide. I took it to the register, guy rang it up, grumbled about some guy missing one to his co-workers, and begrudgingly let me have it for free.

I then went to the other gamestop in town (they're about a quarter mile apart) and looked through their guides. Found a City of Heroes, which is listed as pennied-out, but the guy said it rang up full price. Oh well.

Just curious, when did stores start pennying out guides (or has it always been like this since the beginning)?

I just started collecting guides earlier this year when I finally stopped ignoring the $0.01 threads here at CAG.... is this something all stores have been doing for the last 15+years?

No idea. I thought it was a relatively recent phenomenon, until I find an old extreme g guide from toys r u.s., with a .01 price tag, in a box of old magazines. The game was released in 98, so I'd assume the guide was bought in 98 or 99. This was well before CAG and I have no recollection of ever buying a penny guide, but I clearly did.

Supposedly stores have been pennying out the guides for a long time. I know in 1999 I found my first penny guide and thought it was a fluke(the guide was a Zelda game by the way).

Yea, I'm going to wait for the next penny guide drop and try and get a ton of extras to trade ( since I have good luck at TRU and Best Buy), since I'm low on cash funds.

I went to a GameStop today and picked up Shadow Hearts Covenant and 2 copies of Paper Mario Thousand-Year Door. The guy wasn't too happy about it. He warned me that he will let me buy them for 3 cents, but next time he won't sell those guides to me.

That's about when I got my 1st penny guide a friend found it at an EBgames and it was clearly marked a penny. It was a Street Fighter III: New Generation guide for the arcade version by Gamefan Books. Of course I didn't know about penny guides at the time and that they really ain't suppose to be sold to customers for a cent & that it was something regularly done to guides that have been sitting on the shelf for awhile.

I used to play Mortal Kombat I & II with some of the people that used to work at my EBgames (or should I say Electronics boutique :D) around 1992-1994 and they used to give me magazines all the time when they were to be pulled but never any guides that I remember maybe penny guides started around the mid 90s sometime.

Is there a place to post our trades? I picked up my first penny guides yesterday at Best Buy. I got Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Jade Empire to trade. I would REALLY like the Star Wars Lego Game Strategy guide (if there is one), or possibly the Halo 2 guide.

Let me know, thanks!

I went to BB today hoping to find Minish Cap and Jade Empire, which I knew they had a ton of, but when I went, I found that they had moved the strategies guides to a different area, and pulled all the penny guides off the shelves, even the couple of NFL Street 2 and Fight Night guides that were lingering were gone. :censored:

Anyone wanna trade an Extra Jade Empire or Minish cap guide? I've got Jak 3, Xenosaga 2, and KOTOR 2 to trade.

Go to the trade forum and create a trade thread w/anything you have to trade then put a link to it in your sig.

It seems to me that EB is fairly lenient in letting people have/buy .01 guides while GS, for the most part, can be real Nazis about it. I have 2 GS's near me and have never gotten a single guide from either of them. One of them had a GTA: San Andreas guide that had severe water damage on more than half of it and were selling it for $8! Oooooh, it's half off! What a deal! My EB has actually volunteered to hold .01 guides for me whenever they have a clearance. Obviously, they now get my business and I haven't bought anything at GS in more than a year and half.
Just curious, when did stores start pennying out guides (or has it always been like this since the beginning)?

I just started collecting guides earlier this year when I finally stopped ignoring the $0.01 threads here at CAG.... is this something all stores have been doing for the last 15+years?
I bought a number of N64 guides for .99 at KBToys in the later 1990s (Perfect Dark, Banjo Tooie, Star Wars Racer).

Then I saw Best Buy advertised 1c guides in 2002 . . . I got Maximo, Ico, and a few others. Didn't know others did it until I found CAG last spring.

That reminds me, I may have an extra Ico guide, but I would want something special in trade for it.

i used to find 10 cent guides a kb toys a while ago. I bought like 4 dino crisis guides and thought it was amazing that it cost less than 50 cent.

I went to Gamestop today. Didn't see any penny guides but I did have several good finds in the used guide section for $0.89 each:

Starcraft 64
Way of the Samurai 2
Samurai Warriors
Shadow Hearts Covenant
Haunted Mansion
Baten Kaitos
Cold Winter
Digimon World 3

It sucks that GS is no longer taking in used guides as you could find some real gems every so often.

Interested in trading any of those? I'd be interested in StarCraft 64 and Haunted Mansion if you are.

Actually, I probably should have mentioned this...they're are all spoken for - 7 of the 8 I am keeping and I'm giving one to a friend.

Did anyone get any extra Fullmetal Alchemist or Shadowhearts Covenant guides? Check my list if you missed some from the older sales.

Just out of curiosity, do the guides look new? Just my observation, but a couple of the GS managers in my area have been pulling the penny guides and putting $.99, $1.99, and $3.99 on them.

Starcraft 64's cover was a little worn but all of the others seem to be in excellent shape.

Well I covered someone's morning shift at Best Buy today and I got stuck making price changes, lame. On the bright side, I discovered that accessories were being pennied out.

I dunno if there is a list of .01 accessories, but I'll go ahead and list the latest changes here.

At my store, only item we had in stock was the Power Mouse. I hit up another local store and they had a decent amount of stuff, but most of it wasn't labeled, and I wasn't about to go up and ask if they would pricecheck it for me just to have them snatch it from my hands. Most of these products are probably just repackaged and trying to get rid of the old packaging (like all the action replays), so be careful what you buy, make sure the SKU is correct. I'll try to look up UPCs soon and edit those in so that people have an easier time with the unlabeled SKU products.

Edit: Not having luck googling any SKU databases, if anyone knows of one, let me know. Otherwise I'll just look them up tomorrow at work.

Edit 2: Added UPCs, should be easier now for the people with lazy best buy employees who don't label their products. Also, I'll mention that I do remember seeing accessories pennied out a few months ago, but at the time I was unaware of pennied out guides and figured that these were just odd sales/mislabeled prices. And for any disbelievers, heres my reciept to prove it (only picked up the action replay for ps2). See reciept here

thanks for the info.

I WANT AN XBOX ACTION REPLAY!!! Sorry about the caps but I wanted to make a point. Assuming this is a .01 I will gladly pay for shipping plus a few extra bucks for the trouble. A CAG in need is a CAG indeed (that doesn't really make sense).

I can confirm this 100% now. I picked up a Ps2 Power Mouse at a penny today. That was all they had, but these do ring up a penny. I'll have a receipt scan up soon if you guys want, but I think you can trust me.
