Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

Master list in post 2

Stopped by my Best Buy today to pick up the new Burnout Revenge demo so I checked out the guide section. It was the first time in a while they had penny guides--5 Goldeneye Rogue Agents. Not bad I guess... :)

Went to the "most hated" Best Buy in my area (also happens to be the only one close to work). Found nothing. Not even the Burnout Revenge Demo.

I'll also confirm the accessories for a penny. I picked up a power mouse for $.01, a Burnout Demo, and a Stealth preview dvd. The mouse was the only thing on the list at the Northcrest BB. I picked up one of the two mice they had. I was hoping for a max drive and one of those large mem cards.

I was also going to pick up Ys for the ps2, but that is still $40. Is that ever going to drop?

Does it make a difference if a store scans their own barcode (SKU) as opposed to the barcode printed on the back cover?

I tried picking up the Sudeki guide at Gamestop but it still rang up at full price ($14.99), even though it's on the pennied out list in the OP... I was thinking this may have happened since the clerk scanned the front cover with their own sticker barcode and not the back.

IIRC, when I picked up Shadow or Rome at another GS, the person scanned the back cover and it came out to $0.01... Anyone know if this makes a difference?
Any guesses what this is?
Seems to be a link cable to play GBA on the GC. Details here

The 8mb memory card is definately not the sony one, I think its a nyko.

To avoid ringing up full price products, I've added UPCs to the list, so just check the back of the product and if the UPC is the same, it outta be fine.

Also, I added my reciept for any disbelievers. They can both be found in my original post.

Picked up a PS2 mouse, broadband adapter, and game talk today for a .01. And also the gamceube max drive but that rung up full price so I didn't get it. Also got the burnout demo for free. Not a bad .03 spent

Got the following guides: GTA Double Pack,COD:Finest Hour,Ace Combat 5, and Shadow of Rome. Looking for Shadow Hearts Covenant or will check lists.

My guess would be when the PSP version drops, which is soon.

Lol, I was about to ask the same thing. Well, first, I was going to mention how upset I am that I didn't have any time at all to check CAG yesterday before going to BB, and I am just finding out about this now. Then I was going to ask about that.

BTW, whether or not I get in on this, NiVRaM rocks for posting it.

The "160" seems to be a network adapter for the ps2, http://ostg.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=695662/

Thanks for the kind words as well :)
what exactly is that xbox headset rep? Is it an official first party headset to use on live?
On my list all the products are manufactured by Datel Design, which seems to be all 3rd party nyko type stuff.

Tried to pick up a few penny guides at GameStop today, but the guy there said they're not allowed to sell any guides priced below a dollar. He pointed out how all the used guides, which were recently marked down to $.99, had to be pulled also. Is this just YMMV?

I just wanted to say thanks to the BB employee who posted about the $0.01 accessories. I went to my BB today and they had them tagged as a penny, and I got two PS2 mice and a PS2 AR. Thanks! ^_^

Stopped at Walmart last night.
They had:
$2 Metroid Prime: Echoes
$2 Metal Gear Acid
$2 Area 51
$8 Xenogears II

And a couple others I cannot remember now sorry.

If anyone can get me a Max Drive for PS2, I will gladly pay for shipping + extra for their trouble and/or trade some of the extra penny guides I have

Does anyone have any extra of the following guides?

Bard's Tale
Haunted Mansion
Robotech Battlecry
Tak the Power of Juju
Zone of Enders 2

If so, please see my trade list, I have updated it recently.

Same here (Chicago area).

I went to a local gamestop which usually sucks, but I was next door so I stopped by. I found monster hunter and mega man zero 3 guides for a penny. Considering the recent tendency to pull or not sell those guides, I looked around for something to buy (took a while). Ended up getting parasite eve 2 for 9 bucks.

When I get to the counter the guy says I can have monster hunter but if mega man zero was a penny (which it was) I couldn't have it. Figured it was no use in arguing since he could very easily refuse to sell monster hunter, so I just said ok and had a "what the hell?" look on my face. The guy starts saying a guy asked for it but he said he didn't know he had it, so he was holding it for that guy. I must have looked aggravated cause he kept saying that. Then he says he had a bunch in back and I can take some if I want. Nothing great, but got gta double pack, samurai warriors, lords of the realm III (the only one I really wanted), secret weapons over normandy, demon stone and a couple others (didn't have street fighter or the other recent mark downs I wanted). I also asked the guy, since he did it for someone else, if I called about a recently pennied guide if he'd hold it and he said that he wasn't supposed to, but he would since as far as he was concerned they were free. I'm almost certain he was the manager (the 2 employees kept asking him questions, and he looked about 40). The only bad thing is I feel almost obligated to buy something now, and there's almost never anything in that store.

You must have one heck of a "what the hell?" look -- you should interrogate prisoners. Congrats on the guides.

I think it just a 3rd party replacement headset. I think these may be the ones that go over the head.

Great story and nicely played to get those guides.

But the best part is your close . . . I hate Gamestop and the fuckncoland that spawned it.

Same at the Hickory Hollow (Nashville), TN store, at least for the Advance Game Port. $16.99. It was the only one of the accessories I found. Oh well, I didn't really expect to find anything there so long after the initial posting. They still have a Tekken 5 guide, lol. I did manage to get a few more Stealth preview DVDs (they have tons), and, after asking and having the employee dig into a drawer, 2 more Xbox Burnout Revenge demos (they may have been the last two, but I saw at least one PS2 version in the drawer) for some CAGs who requested it.

Thanks for the heads up on the penny accessories at BB. I was able to find a couple of the PS2 Power Mouse and a PS2 AR Max. Oddly, the mouse was labelled as being a penny, but the AR Max was still labelled around $15. I was also able to get both the PS2 and the X-Box Burnout Revenge demo discs for free. Now if only I could find a copy of the Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls guide at an EB since someone said in this thread that it has dropped to a penny there (I was never able to find a copy of it at BB when they pennied it out awhile back).

I went in and found 4 penny guides.2 different guides.I took them to the register and the clerk rang them up.She saw the total of four cents and looked dumbfounded. She called the manager over and asked what was wrong. The manager(an overweight hillbilly with a mullet, seriously) looked at it and said: "The price is reduced because there is something objectional in the book you cannot see therefore I cannot sell it to you."I told her that is not the case that it was marked down because of a clearance due to the guide being old.Besides I told her.I'm 19.So anyways she preced in saying I could only choose 1 guide out of 4.After I chose she said she had to destroy the others and walked away with the guides. She also told me they have fired other employies for selling 1c guides.I have never been put through this for a penny guide.

I went to three Gamestops today looking for PS1 games and penny guides. There were no penny guides at the first two, but at the third one I spotted one lone copy of the Street Fighter: AC guide.

Now my luck at GS has been pretty bad with penny guides lately as I've been denied several times: "We're sorry, we cannot sell or give those away" or my favorite "The manager won't let us sell those because he keeps them all for himself." Anyway, I figured I had nothing to lose because I was buying 4 used games anyway.

So the cashier rung everything up and when he scanned the guide he looked perplexed. He called over to a coworker and mentioned the guide was scanning for a cent. The coworker didn't say anything and the cashier said he would have to manually change the price to $20. At that point, I declined saying I'll just take the games, when the coworker said "just give it to him."

After thanking the clerks, and leaving I opened the guide to the CD and was a little scared since the slip holding the disc was already open, but thankfully the soundtrack was inside! This is probably one of the best items I have ever gotten for a penny anywhere.

Hit one BB, one EB, one TRU and two GS today. The EB and TRU had nothing of note. The BB had the Power Mouse and three penny guides including StarFox Assault. One of the GS's had about 15 penny guides. I brought up 10 and the cashier scanned them all at a penny. He could sell them to me for 0.99 each, but not a penny. So, I picked up 5 guides for a buck each including the Street Fighter: AC guide. The other GS had a bunch of used guides, but nothing special and no penny guides.

there were three yugioh guides one had the green xbox border

some others in a stack that I did not get to see.
I did find out how it works at ebgames
Employees get the list the night before the price changes and are supposed to
pull them the day before by closing time.
The ones we find after that are ones they have missed for what ever reason.
The guy at eb had a stack behind the counter for the openers to throw out, tommorrow when they are acually a penny.
so if you go tommorrow when your EBGAMES opens you could ask if they have
throwen them out yet and see if the will give you some.
happy hunting.

Is that really true? Have employees gotten fired for selling the penny guides? The reason I ask is several employees at Bestbuy who sold me the guides don't seem to be at the store anymore.

TRU around here destorys all the guides right after closing the night before they go to a penny so dont expect to get any around here. Unless you want to take the chance in buying them now and going back and getting a price match

Just to help out others...
as a former employee of EB, their guide tossing is different then what you think. We got the price changes in the morning when we opened. At that time, we pull the guides listed at 1 cent. Whenever someone feels like throwing them out then they are tossed.

also, Joint Ops and Axis and Allies were supposed to be tossed a while back.
