Is the PS5 Pro disc drive add on the same version as the regular PS5 that can be deactivated through internet connection?
There's no PS5 Pro disc drive. It's just the one that comes with the $500 Slim PS5 or you buy for the Digital Edition Slim.

Edit: I guess I should not have answered this question.

Edit: my BC post will read blu rays and cds but not dvd, making it mostly not BC anymore. And my PS4 doesn’t seem to recognize dvd anymore either, but still does fine with blu ray

Had this happen to me recently, it's an easy fix but takes like 2 hrs and costs $50.

I got rid of series x and went and dropped 272 on a dualsense edge with warranty. (No way I wasn't getting 1) All 3 of my dualsenses developed some kind of drift. Sony must love me. :) I'm all in. Disc drive comes tomorrow.

Sony rewards topped off my account so I had 500 reward points. I cashed out for a $5 PSN card today.
I sent a email a while ago and I got a response that the points in my account were correct.
I received a email today to use my points and noticed some added points to my account.

It is all about the narrative you choose to believe...

The article says that because people want physical media is why the disc drice is selling out. They make some good points, and there are people (like me) who decided that they would buy the disc drive the moment Pro was announced officailly and confirmed to not have a disc drive option.

Although, I am guessing here, it has to be scalpers. Really hope that they get stuck with them.

As consoles become more and more like computers and the price is more akin to cell phones, what is really what after all. Disk drives (Bluray or whatever) are very uncommon on desktop computers now (mine is a USB attachment after getting a newer tower a while back) and consoles are trying to do the same exact things. With the price of consoles it's becoming more the same as having a PC with a newer graphics card and SSDs and such. My PC is pretty much a Xbox Series X already, and before you know it it will be my PS6 or whatever. I love PC gaming though, and a lot of the times I just don't see a reason why I should be console gaming other than exclusives (one of the main reasons IMHO Microsoft is bombing this series of consoles).

I pretty much use my PS5 to play exclusives like Stellar Blade, and my Switch to play Nintendo exclusives like the Zelda games, and the niche games that come out for them, but if it keeps going like this with higher and higher prices, I will be out on consoles. I will just be a PC gamer mainly and likely still have my Nintendo console.

Wouldn't surprise me if they stop bundling controllers with the console as well. I mean, the DualSense is pretty much a waste to me since I'll be using the edge. Everything will be a add on in the future. watch. Prices won't go down either.

The major difference is, on PC you can buy from Steam, Epic, Humble Bundles, GOG Galaxy, and other platforms for your digital games. Xbox and Playstation have walled off gardens where your only choice in price on a game is direct from them. Buying discs was the only way to maybe get a better deal on a game since you had multiple retailers selling games.

People are so hungry for good deals on digital games that they are willing to risk account bans to buy from other regions just to save some money. You can tell that Xbox and Playstation don't offer very good digital deals.

Also sales prices are extremely stagnant on say the PSN and the Eshop and such. Sony pretty much just mixes up the same old games at the same old prices and calls it a different sale. I almost don't want to look at the sales because it's always the same junk over and over.

On the comment about separately sold controller, when are major consoles not going to have power chords like some cell phones (and the 3DS did this garbo as well) or missing bricks to plug it in? Everyone is trying to nickle and dime everything and I'm already getting tired of it as a customer.

computers getting rid of disc and floppy drives is more a technology advances thing though as everyone moves to USB and micro sd/sd cards. sony doing away with the disc drive and charging for it is out of pure greed. especially since they still use discs as a medium for their platform. and their digital only player should be considerably cheaper without the disc drives IMO. if they had moved to carts like Nintendo did for the switch that would be another matter. But they didn't.

The main point is that we are paying more and getting less.

Less control, less ownership. Full retail releases are getting hollowed out, and then packed with additional DLC, in order to hit a certain price point. Controllers are up, msrp on games is up, worst of all the annual service costs are up dramatically, and now on top of everything the cost of console hardware is up. While they're subtracting vital parts and adding them to the A La Carte menu.
It's been a pretty forgotten generation for AAA games after four whole years, and we're supposed to pay more? While they've been honing various service, and lack-of-ownership economies. It's the frog getting slowly boiled to death in a pot of water, not noticing.

New release and online console gaming has gotten substantially more expensive. While many of those costs have no reason to go up.

They are now doing the same thing every small-town supermarket was doing back in 2021. Gouging their customers even when they don't need to, and holding up their hands like they have no choice. We've seen how that all worked out. The price of milk, eggs, or bacon HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOT become more expensive in major metropolitan areas where shoppers have choices. Gas is cheap again. Your stores and your chicken factory have been gouging you. Google the chicken collusion lawsuits.

The major difference is, on PC you can buy from Steam, Epic, Humble Bundles, GOG Galaxy, and other platforms for your digital games. Xbox and Playstation have walled off gardens where your only choice in price on a game is direct from them. SOO much this. I believe you've summed up the situation as succinctly as possible.
Full digital means = an intrinsic monopoly. Us ceding more rights is a financial disaster for owners.

People need to understand how bad it is for consumers if and when we lose competition in the marketspace (Xbox). Folks don't seem to understand how that is currently happening right under our noses. MS wants Gamepass on other consoles and it's not happening. (so far)

It doesn't help that most gamers are stupid and always buying the wrong shit. Spending all of their money on vapid service charges and mulitplayer cosmetics. We've always depended on the altruism of these corporations (Sony and Nintendo) to follow through on their mission statements, and the promise of delivering quality games. But that hasn't been one of Sony's main priorities anymore.

You can go to CDKeys to get codes for PS5 games. Also Humble Bundle had a CAPCOM Playstation bundle at some point. It is not as widespread as the PC market, but there are ways to get digital codes other than through PSN.

You can also wait for Dollar Store (Tree?) or Target (or whoever) to run sales on the digital currency

They key is patience and no always having the brand new releases, granted I lack said patience :ROFLMAO:

I think the CDKeys ones are only ones that were a console pack-in that came with a card that had a code on it. PlayStation stopped selling games via cards with codes.

Honestly, the PC store landscape may come to console sooner rather than later. With Epic's recent wins against Apple and the stricter regulations of the EU, there's starting to be a precedent for legally required sideloading on walled garden devices by way of accusations of monopolistic practices. Maybe console manufacturers see that possibility too which is why they are so determined to ensure a profit is made on hardware sales now.
Something to think about.

A quick search on eBay shows the scalpers in action...

I dunno man, 10 years ago PC was amazing with deals.. you'd see 75% off AAA games on Steam within a year or so of them being released. These days, it feels like PC and PSN have reached a bit of equilibrium. More that PC has weakened to PSN sale quality, not so much that PSN has risen to old-days-Steam level discounts.

I hear it a lot online, "PC is where you go for deals", but I don't think that's been true for years.

Even the Humble Bundles are just PS+ freebies so much of the time.

It's because the developers/publishers set the price in the sales on everything, and they've eventually reached a point where they're just putting the same sales out on every platform.

I think it depends on where you look for PC games and the risk you're willing to take. Sites like gg.deals tracks price changes/sales, but some of the 3rd party sites sell grey market codes. I agree that Steam sales aren't as good as they used to be, but there are far more storefronts when it comes to PC gaming.

Bundle prices aren't as good as they were before for sure (I do cover Fanatical/Humble Bundles and the very occasional Indiegala one), as the prices are higher for more premium games (newer usually), but I still do think better sales come first to PC. Also PC is a gold mine for indie and non AAA titles and many times there is a good percentage off if the game is a newer release or a popular one. PC sales stagnate as well, but the stagnated sale prices are usually much better than the lowest PSN and eShop prices. I don't generally partake in grey market sites unless a game is really hard to get (sometimes DLC). Whatever the case I'm buying very little on PSN/eShop sales these days.

Apparently the PS5 pro will only be sold on Playstation direct for the first 2 weeks. I'm not sure if this means if they sell well, the majority of them will go to direct. This probably means stores like Gamestop won't be getting that many at launch. Bad for me because I would prefer to use my credit there if possible and I know I'm not the only one.

So many things questionable with your statement...

Stellar Blade? entertaining game, but I find it hard to believe that the only game you ahve for the 5 is that one

What are you doing to your controllers? 6 month lifespan?

You don't "have" to pay $80 (but if you do there are the free games each month and considering you only have Stellar Blade it would be well worth it for you)

And unless you have a PC, the fact is, Sony's move here is not going to make this your "last console generation".

It's easy to complain about no disc drive (which I myself admittedly thought was dumb), but now it appears to be a brilliant move by Sony. Those that want the drive can buy it and add to their Pro (Or Scalpers will buy them, but from a company standpoint it is still a sale).

I don't like the precident going forward to not have a disc drive, but my Steam Deck doesn't have one and I have somehow managed to survive. The Steam Deck also has addons to connect to your TV, but I do not recall a huge uproar that a dock wasn't included when purchasing one.
So to answer your questionables,

I said the only PS5 Exclusive I've bought has been Stellar Balde. Do I have a couple of other PS5 games that I could have gotten different systems sure, but as I said I didn't get the PS5 for it being the PS5. It was a replacment because I got sick of the slowly failing wireless card in my PS4 that was driving me insane and at the time I figured why not just throw a 100 more bucks get a PS5 rather than replacement it with a new PS4. The majority of what I play on it has been PS4 games.

Next I take very good care of my stuff. Every controllers I have ever gotten that came with the system back to the original NES is still in pefect working order. Even my Switch Joy-Cons which everyone knows are problematic still work perfectly after 4 years. The dual sense that came with my PS5 started getting stick drift after 3 months, by six months it got so bad I had to buy a replacement. I haven't even had a PS5 for a year now.

Next well while I did stock up on a couple of years before the $80 up charge, if I want to continue to play Monster Hunter online on my PS5 with my family & friends, yeah I "HAVE" to pay to Sony arbitrary paywall of just because, that Capcom or the Monster Hunter Teams will never see a cent of. And don't try to pass of the free rental games like it's a plus for the price. Everyone knows 90% of them are dog crap, they usually are a combination of games that have flops, a online only game that virtually dead well past it's prime or never was, or last years previous microtransaction riddle sports title of which the newer is already out or will be out in month's time. Are there occasionally a diamond in the mound of crap they keep servin us, sure. But in all the years I've had PS+ datiting back to the PS3, while at the beginning they offered some good titles but since the PS4 era you know how many PS+ games they given us I've played that I didn't already owned? One, that being Stranded Deep. PS+ is a joke & everyone knows it, stop trying to defend it.

Next I have a PC & a decent one so yeah this being my last console genertation is very viable but even if I didn't with the state of the industry as it it now I be perfectly fine just replaying my collection. Hell maybe I could take the next 10 years and get through my backlog, as we're CAGs we all have one and none of them are small. The thing is I've been a console player all my life and for me to even consider walking away from them is mind blogging to me, but that's how bad things have gotten. And to be fair it's not just Sony with the PS5, Microsoft is royally screwing the pooch on the Xbox side of things except with them I don't think they actually care if the brand lives or dies at this point. They're Microsoft, they're pissing off their bread & butter being Windows users to the point where boomers are learning to use Linux, hell I'm learning to use Linux at this point. As for Nintendo well we all know Nintendo going to Nintendo.

As for the disc drive well let me counter point this way. You know that pro controller which was touted as their $200 solution to their controller problem because you know you can just easy swap out a stick instead of replace the whole thing with a new stick that you could buy separtly for like $20. How many of those replacement stick have you seen in the wild? I've never seen one in the wild and when they show up online even from Sony directly themselves , it's usually only a handful and they're gone in a instant. Granted after a year now they've up the production of them a little so you can find them now and again, but you think the disc drive is going to be any different? We know what happens when Sony wants you to purchase the product, you still see the PSVR sets everywhere despite they've even admitted to the sales of it being "underwhelming". The disc drive is the same thing as the swapable sticks. They don't want to sell you a fixable parts for a controller because they want to you just buy a whole new controller. Just like they don't want to sell you a disc drive for the system as they want you to buy all your games on their digital marketplace because it makes them more money. Both offerings are just way placate those who are vocal about it by saying see you have a choice as they continute to slow boil us to the point where we're cooked.

To your last point. The selling point of the Steam Deck was it was a portable solution to PC gaming, key word being portable. It not having a dock to connect to my TV isn't a issue because it was never expected in the first place, especially when I already have a line running from my PC to my TV. It's like expecting a Nintendo DS or a PSP to do the same out of the box. Would have it been nice, sure but you were getting them for the portablity and maybe when you lose power for days on end so you don't have to do something like read a book. But releasing a premium version of your systems at a very premium price and saying to your customer "Hey if you want upgrade and continue play 50% to 90% percent of your games on the system? Give us another $80 and you can...that is when we feel like making the drive available to buy in the first place." It's the same slap in the face and then expect us to hand over our money to them regardless that the entire industry has been high on for years on end now.

Also don't pretend like the digital landscape in the PC landscape is anything like it is on consoles. PC you have multiple storefronts to buy your games from at vastly different prices. Not mention platforms, don't like drm go with GOG, Steam annoys the $h!t out of you well there's Epic, I would question your sanity as to why one would but the point is there's the option for it. Sony you want games for your PS5 you buy from our marketplace at our set prices or to go kick rocks. It's bad for the consumer & bad for the publishers. Might I remind you it used to be you could go into a brick & mortar and buy a card for a digital download for a PSN game abate at full price mind you, like you can still do for both Nintendo & Xbox, even some Steam games. But even that was too much consumer freedom for Sony and they converted everything to just digital currency, even the PS+. It's that type of mentally that kept Halo 3 still at 29.99 on the 360 storefront minus the occasional sale til the day they closed it down while you could probably get a disc copy for free or a dollar for the last decade plus.

Lastly I just like to say I WANT Sony to succeed, I WANT consoles to succeed and thrive as I can see the landscape being much more dark & dire without them all around. But that isn't going to happen as long as they continue in their second mid life crisis hubris mode and make stupid decisions, and if we don't call them out for it. I say this as I am just old enough to barely remember the first time we had a black Thursday in gaming & I see the same mistakes repeating itself. The way things are going Playstation as a system will meet a demise & they only option they will have is to go the Xbox route which I don't think they can afford to to do & gaming will then be relugated to PC & mobile. I don't want to see that come to past & I think neither do you. Minus Nintendo cause as they say the only things in life you can count on are death, taxes & Nintendo always going to Nintendo.

So there, I hope I was able to answer my questionable statement to your satifaction. If not well good luck to you good sir/madame/whatever you perfer, I wish you the best as obviously..

P.S. Apologies to everyone for the rant. I'm going through some $h!t and tend to do it when I'm stressed. 😅😓

Other things on a controller fail just as much as the sticks. In fact, I've never gotten drift on a elite 2. The back paddles. and shoulder buttons have failed on me everytime, they stop registering presses. So I purchased the warranty anyway on my edge.

So how is that Dualsense Edge controller? Anyone used it for an extended period of time and have feedback?

I love my cobalt blue controller but just about to pull the trigger on the Edge controller.

I haven't opened mine yet but the guy I play cod with says he'll never go back to a dualsense. He's had it since last October and still no issues. That's a better track record then my elite 2 usage. They usually started acting up around 4 months. Cod is bad for controllers apparently.

Finished and got the Platinum in AstroBot over the weekend. What a wonderful game.
I want this team to make a new Ape Escape game.
I'm close, however, I can not for the life of me beat Splashing Sprint 😂 I have that, one of the X's (that ive died on the last jump more than id like to talk about) and the grandmaster challenge left.

oh thank god the disc drive is back. I was getting worried.

buying two for the nucular apocalypse, and supporting Sony.
Playstation direct is now out of stock and a lot of people don't know if the disc drive is compatible with the pro. My money's on it selling out and being hard to find if not only because of scalping.

As of 6pm, Gamestop is now sold out as well. Brilliant move by sony to get rid of overstock. I heard some of these have sat on selves since last October.

Games Leaving PS+ Extra/Premium in October (October 15th):
  • Dragon Quest Builders
  • Dragon Quest Builders 2
  • Dragon Quest Heroes
  • Dragon Quest Heroes 2
  • Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age
  • Gotham Knights
  • LittleBigPlanet 3
  • The Evil Within
  • Toukiden Kiwami
  • Ultra Street Fighter 4

disgusting... more high quality games leaving the service, first party games being taken off.... what's even the point of subscribing to PS Plus? I wish the government would look into these anti-consumer companies charging for online play when PC get to play online for free. I wouldn't even be paying for these fucking stupid services.

I am curious of those "high quality" games leaving the service how many of them have you played/ beat? (for me, only Gotham Knights, which I bought and rather enjoyed it).

I feel the point of the service (and even game pass, except for their first party software) is an extended demo. I personally do not have the time to play all the games offered, but if I like a few would turn and buy those games I enjoyed.

I know this is CheapAssGamer and it isn't ConplainAssGamer-That can't get games for free (yeah the extended title doesn't flow real well) 🤣

Feel like Sony is getting hammered for every step they take now. If those games are leaving it stands to reason other games are being added.

I'm surprised it's mostly dq series stuff leaving.
Gotham knights bombed iirc so I feel like that they could have just kept for cheap.

One positive spin on the disc drives being external is that usually it's the thing that fails on consoles most (specifically Sony) so at least that will be easy to deal with now.
