Since I've secured a ps5 pro, only thing im worried about is if it'll get discounted on Black Friday. Probably $50 at most.

Also some people need to understand that if their tv is crap, there's not much reason to upgrade ur ps5. Upgrade your TV FIRST

I’m waiting to get power back first before I preorder. No gamestops are open within 100 miles of me. Going through 2 back to back hurricanes in less than 2 weeks.

damn that sucks makes me feel bad that I couldn't care less about the hurricane just because it hasn't affected me (yet) lol

No way it gets discounted a few weeks after launch. They released it knowing the biggest shopping day of the year was later that month and it just being available people will likely buy it. Retailers can't even throw a free game in with it since it doesn't come with a disc drive lol. Maybe some free PSN credit or PS+ though

Maybe a gift card from certain retailers?

Only thing you will get is special credit card or cash back promos. I currently have a paypal rewards 5 percent cashback plus the 3 I get from my card for Walmart (this is currently my best deal since i get the cash back). I also have a 10 percent in rewards at bestbuy through their credit card.($40 bonus maximum). I know there will be more promos coming. Best Buy will usually do spend a certain amount ($500 get a bonus $50 cert)plus whatever points you'd get for the purchase) I just completed one.

PS4 Pro got a $60 discount on Amazon a couple weeks after release. That's when I got it.

I feel like that's gotta be some Amazon specific discount for BF/holiday sales not really a Sony backed discount. Amazon back then was still a solid retailer at that time and there'd be actual BF sales and whatnot. Things are different now... BF/holiday sales past year or two sucked from what I remember.

Not saying it can't happen, just saying it's gonna be retailer driven. Target has now twice discounted the PS5 and I think they discounted the XS a few times.

Really glad I am not feeling the urge to upgrade to the Pro. Just fine with my PS5 slim WITH DISC DRIVE.

I feel like the original PS5 I got in 2020 is still working great and handling even the most demanding games I throw at it. I feel like if you had a PS4 Pro and waited to upgrade then this would be the logical next step. I will probably just wait for the PS6. The only possible reason I can think of for me to purchase the PS5 Pro is if Sony announces the PS6 won't have a disc drive option prebuilt or attachable or if it is somehow not backwards compatible with discs. By that time the PS5 Pro would either come down in price or see a huge price increase via scalpers exploiting the situation lol.

Yeah I still don't feel we've reached the apex point of what the PS5 could do overall. Sometimes the pro versions of some systems is worthwhile overall, but as I said before once a system stops playing games super well (like the Switch right now), it's likely better to move on to another full iteration. The PS5 does have issues of slowdown or something in some games, but it's not persistent enough in what I play to actually bother me or cause the gameplay to be poop. The PS5 was already expensive before when I purchased it, so I'll stick with it till it sucks at playing games. It still plays games fine right now and other than my fans going crazy in a game with lil performance issues (Visons of Mana demo of all things) I haven't noticed anything weird about my PS5. I think what pushed me over the edge to just ignore this iteration of the pro was no disk drive or stand. I throw my money away on some bad things, but I just don't see the value in it overall. If it was like $500 I could see some swapping being done, but alas that is not the case.

Why would it be $500? That's the same price as a regular PS5 and only $50 more than a digital version when they're not on sale. I think the days of cheap hardware are over. Modern hardware is so much more sophisticated than, say, a Super NES. Even when the PS5 generation is over and the industry has moved onto PS6 and PS7, I don't think PS5 prices will bottom out to lower than $299 or $250 for new ones.

I would have liked to have had the $699 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro. But I'm not going to pay seven hundred dollars on something I'm not thrilled with. Any other cool new limited edition console might be coming around the corner. Sony could have made more of the Pro which everyone wanted.

You could get another high performance big-screen instead.

Here's some other things to think about... as sophisticated as it is, the PS5 is 4 years old at this point. And as sophisticated as it is, chip manufacturing has made significant advancements (gotten better/economies of scale, etc.) allowing us to continually receive better hardware. Game development costs are going up, for sure, but hardware costs have had a lot of factors that have kept things stable.

But all of that considered, fact is: the technology on the PS5 is still 4 years old. There's no reason it should be $500.

Ok, let's build on that... the only major upgrades on the PS5 Pro is the upgraded GPU and 2TB SSD but loses the optical drive. The GPU has a notable jump sure... but's effectively the modernized version of the GPU that was in the original PS5 (which, for it's time, was actually pretty advanced). SSD prices have plummeted significantly; I bought a 2TB SSD for my PS5 back in Feb 2022 for $280. You can now get (PS5 compatible) 2TB for less than half that.

So the taking all of that into consideration- a PS5 Pro is basically the same old hardware with a better GPU and more storage and loses the optical drive... all that might justify an additional $200 on it's own... but $200 more relative to the price of a 4 year old console?

Nobody is gonna say the PS5 Pro isn't more powerful/better but the pricing is, at best, questionable.

Modern hardware is so much more sophisticated than, say, a Super NES.

For the time that the SNES came out? Yeah, no it isn’t. We also aren’t getting nearly as much of a benefit for upgrading hardware as we were in the 80s and 90s. Back then, every generation, hell every half generation bump in hardware offered immediate, obvious improvements. These days, what, we have a few more particles on screen? We can bump resolution up from 1440p to 4K? That’s barely even noticeable. These days you get better results from learning and optimizing for existing hardware than bumping up half a generation.

There are many factors why console prices are not dropping. Build and shipping costs aren't declining, Covid-19 severely impacted supply chains in general, a great increase in demand for at home entertainment during Covid, and console hardware are already sold at loss on day one.

Now there's a big shift to get those hardware sales to stay profitable. They are not willing to keep on taking a loss on hardware sales like past generation. There's a reason why the Nintendo Switch, which launched in 2017, is still retailing for $299.99 in 2024.

There may be short term promotional sales for consoles, but full permanent price discount is not going to be the same as pervious generation.

You got an immediate, obvious improvement with current-gen hardware too: the SSD drive. It makes load times practically nothing. If you forgot what the previous gen was like, try going back to playing PS4 or Xbox One again. It's so painful that you'll prefer to do something else than play games.

4 years is barely outdated hardware. Console specs and prices stay stable, then when the next generation of consoles launch, it costs up to $100 more, even though the specs are more advanced by then. Most people don't even upgrade every 5 years. It's closer to 8-10 for the average consumer. Remember that the Pro is for enthusiasts, not the mainstream market. PS6 will likely top out at $600 or $700 as well.

The PS4 is still my main “current” console. For one, the load times really aren’t that bad. Are there outliers where it gets a little silly? Sure. But for the majority of games, it’s not a big deal. For two, the switch to SSD was only a small contributing factor in increasing costs.

Nobody said the PS5 is outdated, but it is 4 years old. Sure 4 year old hardware is still perfectly sufficient but again, the methods and means to make that 4 year old hardware is significantly better than it was. Look at what happens to any CPU or GPU prices from when they release to 1/2/3/4 years later- they get cheaper. Hell, sometimes even 6 months after release, you can find the latest generation CPU and GPU for a notable discount.

Regarding the super fast SSD tech... no clue what makes it proprietary but what I do know is that you're able to grab an over the shelf Gen4 SSD and stick it in your PS5. The one I have (Samsung 980 Pro) seems just as fast the PS5's internal storage so I decided to what actual testing says. This website actually says it's either comparable to or faster than PS5's internal SSD. And this is ignoring that we're in Gen5 now (again, technology progresses forward).

Regarding supply chains/COVID impact- the PS5 came out in Nov 2020, it's now almost Nov 2024. The supply chains were in horrible shape in Nov 2020 but are in much better shape now; maybe not pre-COVID levels but sure as hell closer to pre-COVID levels than peak-COVID levels.

I'm not saying any of this to sway anyone from buying a PS5 Pro, it's your money-spend it how you want. I'm just saying that the PS5 does not seem like a $700 console and I don't get why so many people are buying into the marketing that it's a $700 console.

I believe that the next console is cycle is going to be the last one, in a sense. Or this gen really. Once everything becomes digital-only licenses, disc drive and physical media goes away, then what is the point? You're just another Steam Box (which failed spectacularly), with even more permissions and requirements and fees. Then you don't matter anymore and everyone leaves. That's where we're headed: the digital box route.

Xbox has already gone that route and look how it's worked out for them. Sony is straying farther from the path of righteousness every day. Look at what they tried to pull on Steam this year. to even think that might have been a decent conceived idea is nuts. As if you're going to install your type of walled garden into another digital marketspace. Gates behind gates, on a system that designed around user freedom. Sony's hubris has been off the charts lately. That's why you see SquareEnix flocking to Xbox, and Microsoft courting them at the Tokyo Game Show. The whole marriage exclusivity is not working out anymore. Sony has not been growing SE's business in the least; just taking 30% cuts on digital. Well, the winds are changing.

Anyone can capitalize on service revenues, predatory phone games, and customer loyalty for a few years. Perhaps around five. Then before even realizing or admitting something is wrong, the house of cards is tumbling down and there's nothing you can do at that point to stop it. It's over. It's already too late. We're seeing it all over the place. Ubisoft. Activision-Blizzard. Bungie. Half of western gaming is on fire right now and most people don't even realize it. "hmmm why don't I want to buy the new Diablo content? OH THAT'S RIGHT IT'S BC IT'S NOT A GOOD GAME". Lizard brain unconciously knew, but you didn't.

Lots of these companies aren't going to make it. The service games and carved-DLC industries are failing. What we need is development cycles to get trimmed down from 7-8 years, and from $200-$400mil projects. What we need is to shrink the development timeline for completing and shipping new game releases. and polished, finish game experiences. You can't really get better graphics than 4K at 120 frames refresh; nothing beyond that really matters. Sorry, it simply doesn't. There will be no "next generation"; just feebly manufactured attempts to charge us more. (What we should have for) Console hardware is to the point where no one really needs to upgrade.

Some people are wrong. Sales are stagnant, and you're going to see bigger gaping discounts on current-gen (2020) hardware than you've seen in several years. There's going to be crazy holidays bundles and promotions. Just you wait and see. The console makers have already shown their hands this month, offering price cuts. Sales are stagnant and install bases are not growing. Adults are quitting console gaming.

I can look around in 2024 and see who's well on their way to winning, easily. Boy is it going to be an eye-opener for some people come late Q2 2025. That is going to be a humbling experience.

You actually have these assholes wondering if they can copy the Switch business model (from 2017) but have more gates, more paid services, and more steps! That's where we are today. "Can we have our own Switch, BUT CHARGE MORE? cuz something something graphics." It may even be too late. Every kid I know only cares about getting a Swtich 2. All Call of Duty + Madden players turn 30 or 40 years old eventually. These companies need to decide whether they want to go the route of gouging nonfunctional adult babies with credit cards, or else making complete games.

It's definitely not as bad as peak Covid, but yes there is still a global supply chain issue especially with raw materials. I am not the buyer at my work, but I know they are still facing challenges sourcing certain parts and are constantly bidding for whatever is available.

It's Uncharted 2's 15th anniversary. I feel like that game doesn't really get too many GOATs/top X mentions these days but to me, that's the game that bought me over from the Wii and 360 and fully on board to the PS family. To this day, I still remember the train level and how mind-blowingly impressive that was at the time, especially the part with the exploding/flipping train car (low res gif https://tenor.com/view/uncharted-2-...g-thieves-train-crash-gif-6461693987147415292).

The Last of Us was the one that brought me back fully to Playstation. Played the TLOU and then started playing all the Uncharted games afterward. Even after playing Uncharted 2 years later it was still very impressive and special. The set pieces and action sequences were unmatched.

I still have more fond memories of playing DS, Wii, and 360 games during that generation. PS3 was just really bad during the beginning and somehow turned it around at the end.

I remember getting the PS3 slim about a month before uncharted 2 came out and I picked up uncharted 1 with the slim to get ready for 2. Beat the first one 2-3 times and then was blown away by uncharted 2 and played the online mode a ton. Definitely what got me into the Playstation ecosystem as well. I had a PS2 (and PS1), but went to 360 when the PS3 released later at $599.

I don’t need every PlayStation first party game to be over the shoulder interactive movie: the game, but uncharted did that part right, it fit with what they were going for. The games were great when they felt like you were playing an Indiana jones scene. I still fondly remember those parts. The shooting was wack though, would have been more impactful if they could have just kept the kills to stuff that made sense with the story instead of making Drake a genocidal maniac.

While playing any of the Uncharted games I never once thought of Drake as a murderer, but funny how the perspective of the game has changed to point out this fact.

For those interested in getting some cashback on a pro. Retailmenot actually allows cashback(max $50) on consoles through Walmart which is actually rare. Keep an eye out for percent bonuses. I got in on 6 percent. This with the 8 percent bonus from using PayPal is why i choose Walmart. $41.94 plus the $56 through paypal isn't bad.

They actually called this out in Uncharted 2's ending, which is another memory of mine of Uncharted 2: it was the time that any piece of media made me think "hm... the bad guy has a point, I have killed a lot of people even though I'm the hero." I actually think that concept (hero taking the high ground killed a lot of 'bad guys') pre-dates Uncharted 2 by a few years.

I like the uncharted games, and would be up for another, but I‘d like it to be exploration, stealth and sneaking, traps, towns, note and clue finding, and fighting with some shooting segments. I‘m just going off of vague memory, but uncharted 1, it’s like he wipes out an entire island nation by the end. Having a town with a single person he doesn’t kill, other than his few buddies, could have helped. The shooting gameplay always felt tacked on, just to make it into more of a traditional game and pad it out in just about every new open room. And there are just the same few boring enemy types throughout the whole game. By the end of uncharted 4 there has to be like 2-4k dead bodies? In a realistic setting game, with a positive spin and character that is supposed to be likable and charming, rather than the gruf war hardened FPS trope, where the enemies are still mostly people, all together that just does not work for me. The set pieces and adventuring archaeologist parts are what I like. Sony could have used their concord money to try some whole new type of gameplay between the set pieces, uncharted should be its own genre.

Has anyone tried the console version of New World Aeternum? Was curious how it is.

Missed the beta so wasn’t sure if it’s good but from what I’ve read online people are happy with it.
