PS3 101: New user's guide to the PS3 (ask questions here -- TMK is on duty)

I think I already know the answer to this, but here goes.

I have a sealed SIXAXIS that I've never used. I've been tempted to open it recently, as I've started having issues with my other controller. However, since the DualShock3 is now out are there any exchange deals or replacement plans going on? I do still have my receipt, but I'm sure it'd be too late to bring it back as I bought it long ago (after the first price drop for the 60gb). It's not super important, but it'd be nice to have the newest controller.

You can probably just chalk this up to wishful thinking, but if anyone has heard anything or has any recommendations, I'd appreciate it!

^^ Where did you buy it from? New sealed, wal-mart will take it back w/o a receipt, just ask for an exchange for the dual shock there since it's the same price at wal-marts, that's what I'd do.. Actually it's what I did.

I'm a noob about the PS3 and was looking around for a larger hard drive. I came across one and was wondering if there would be any reason why this wouldn't work?
Hitachi TravelStar 5K250 200GB 2.5" Mobile Hard Drive - SATA, 5400, 8MB, OEM at compusa for 80 bucks is why i was trying to link, bah

Anyone have issues using Remote Play over an Internet connection?

When I was in Atlanta, I could make it connect every time using a direct connection to the PS3, but could never connect over the wifi connection through the router. Do I need to be on a different network trying to connect?
whats the difference between GOTY games and regular games ( same games but different )
Varies depending on the title. Oblivion, for example, includes the $30 Shivering Isles/Nights of the Nine expansion pack in the box, for the same price that the original release (without the expansion) used to sell for. Other games will have a different GOTY edition.

Actually, the standard PS3 version of Oblivion had Knights of the Nine on the disc. The 360 version, you had to buy. But the GOTY does include the Shivering Isles. And, hopefully, on any GOTY edition, they've ironed out the bugs.

Yesterday I tried to get on to the Playstation Store and it said a system update was needed. I clicked yes, but everytime it starts downloading I can only get to 33% and then it says an error has occured and it stops downloading. This has happened every time I have tried this. Anyone else getting this?

I got a oblivion question. On the ps3, can you use any of the mods that have been developed for the PC version? I'm asking since my pc can't handle oblivion.
Oblivion on a console does not use mods, sorry.
Thanks. I guess I'll be getting that on the PC once I do my next upgrade.

I think it's kind of neat that the Playstation 3 seems to be the first console that actually does allow some extra content like a PC-at least with Unreal Tournament 3. Neat that Sony lets the platform be more open like that than the 100% closed 360 platform. Theoretically we might see more stuff down the line like that, a bit more PC like :)

The Sony Style credit card offer comes around pretty regularly. It used to be i think $250 off at one point, but I doubt it will ever get that high again.

Main issues to be concerned about are backwards compatibility and storage.

If you don't care about BC and won't be putting a whole lot of media on the hd, the 40gb is a good choice.

But, if you want to play the occasional ps2 game, and want more storage, the 80gb may be worth waiting for.

Also, hd capacity may be a moot issue because you can manually upgrade the hd with any 2.5" drive.

Hope it helps.:bouncy:

whats BC? all i have is an xbox 360 and hd dvd player, lookin to add the ps3 to my list, i did notice i can upgrade my box, can pick up a laptop hdd somewhere cheap, but will that void the warranty? if i get one at all from sony? other than normal manufacturer warranty, i use to upgrade the old ms xboxs with bigger drives and download the games to the drive, would love to do that with the ps3, but would like a warranty, due to the ms 3 red lights that happens ever so much,

BC == Backwards Compatibility, specifically with PS2 games. The 40 gig will play PS1 games, but only 20/60/80 gig models can play PS2 games. Upgrading the hard drive will NOT void the warranty. And you can use any SATA 2.0 2.5" hard drive purchased from anywhere. And upgrading the hard drive will not add PS2 compatibility to a 40 gig (I think this was asked before, actually).

Thanks that helps, i kinda dont think i'll buy any old ps2 games, but i being me, prolly would like the BC option of playin old ps2 games, so i have a decision to make, thanks for the help

Also, forgot to mention that the new Dualshock3 controllers just hit the market. So if rumble is a concern, I think the first bundle to include them will be the MGS4 one (don't know of any 40gb that will). Any bundle in stores now will only have a regular Sixaxis controller that does not support vibration.

And since you mentioned mostly for blu-rays, I'd recommend taking a look at the official Sony Bluetooth Blu-Ray remote that can be had for under $20 if you look around.

I'm thinking about getting the Sony BT remote.. but the size is HUGE, like damn! haha I wish it could be charged like the controllers too, but that's just me being cheap and complaining Still I haven't gotten it due to the size hahah been using my controller which has been okay..

does the remote have all the standard DVD options on face, like subtitles, display, menu, top menu, etc etc, any thing extra?

thats a cool option, but i thought i also heard an option of using the iphone as some sort of remote? i like that idea, thinking of changing carriers in may my contract ends with nextel and i been wanting the Tilt or the Iphone (plus i heard it controls the ps3 not sure)

Here and here are links to what you're referring too.
From what I understand, it doesn't let the iPhone function as a remote, it makes it more of an extension to a Blu-Ray player, providing additional functionality, though I may have missed that.

It's not that big, about the same size as my other main remote.

Yeah, it has all of the normal DVD player buttons. It's really useful for just navigating the XMB when you're not going to play a game.

There's slight outlines to the right of every image when I'm playing the PS3, not sure if it's my TV settings or my PS3 (connected with component cables) or what, the outlines don't appear with either my 350 or Wii though.
1st console- this generation. :)
What previous console allowed it? I'm not aware of any.

I think I have hardware issues AND firmware problems. Or it could just be one or the other effecting one another. CoD locks up when I try to change the Clan Tag, and the new MGO beta freezes my system too when I try to enter the Game ID. I hit X on either one and it just locks up, nothing appears, and no input works via the controller.

What I am thinking is that whatever part of the system that makes that keyboard overlay appear is messed up. Wish there was away to roll back the system to what it was when I first took it out of the box and re-update.

I'm just being optimistic that it might happen on other consoles but way things are going the PS3 will be the 1st and last of this group.

Random question: When I first got my PS3, I was disappointed to find out that if I stopped a movie it would not load up to that point. Yesterday, I popped in Aliens on dvd and turned it off, came back to it a few hours later and it loaded in the same spot! My fiance even watched another movie which I had to take out and put aliens back in and it still loaded up to the exact spot. Is that a new feature, did I enable it somehow? firmware update?

It's had that ability for as long as I've had a PS3 (last July), but they added the ability recently to resume from where you left off even if you took out the disc.

Yes you are correct, there was a firmware update and the PS3 now saves the previous spot you were at on your DVDs.

There was a DTS HD audio thread I can't find... this support is live now right? I don't see it listed under the audio even after the reboot.

I thought that the desyncing problem was fixed in a previous update. I haven't had a controller de sync in a very long time.

Does anyone know if the 40GB will ever get backward capabilities in the future? Seems like all it would need would be an update from Sony but like many things i could be wrong.
I thought that the desyncing problem was fixed in a previous update. I haven't had a controller de sync in a very long time.
It happened to me a couple of weeks ago...if it was fixed in an update it must've been the most recent one. I haven't had an issue with my 6-axis or my ds3 since.

Quick question about running a system backup-- I got an external drive fairly cheap that I'm thinking of using for a PS3 backup, but I'm wondering what the PS3 backup utility actually does:

1. Does it wipe out the drive and make an image backup, and then the drive MUST only be used on the PS3 for backups?

2. Does it make a file called "PS3BACKUP.BUP" (whatever!) that lives on the HD, but the drive can still be used for other things? (i.e., putting media files on it, or using it on a PC, or the like)

3. If it's #2 (and it makes a file), can you move that file off the external HD that you created it with? I am wondering if I can make a backup once in a while, compress it, and burn to DVD in case I need it in the future-- or does the backup have to stay on THAT specific hard drive and any attempts to move it off will corrupt it?

Thanks!

(edit to add: some more digging sounds like it's #2, and it makes an "EXPORT" folder, but still not sure if you can then move that folder off to another location for longer-term storage, and copy it back to the external HDD if you need to restore your system later)

Yep, I've tested it with "The Transporter" and "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead". Works like a champ. :D
