I finished it. I can't call it one of my favorite games ever, but it was fun. Definitely one of the best PS2 games, IMO. The puzzles and platforming are top-notch. That section in the Hall of Learning with the light beam puzzle is classic, and probably one of my favorite levels in any 3D platformer. I'm still not a fan of the combat, though it did become less of a chore as you upgrade your sword.
It was one of my favorites because the platforming/puzzles outweighed the lame combat in my mind. Supposedly the second game has great combat but fails on the platforming, so I never played it. I will say that the final boss fight is easily the lamest I've played in any game ever. I had a harder time with Birdo in Super Mario Bros 2.

I think what Iwata is trying to say, which I kind of agree with, is that you don't understand the appeal of the Wii U until you've actually sat down and played with it for awhile. Off TV play is pretty valuable for me, MiiVerse is a pretty fun feature, and the stream of first party titles is finally picking up. None of this changes the fact that it is a pretty bad value as someone's primary console since you can get a PS4 for $100 more. But I think with time you will be able to get a system for a much better price and be surprised at how much fun it is.

I guess I had way too much time vested into it in my youth, I pretty much remembered everything...it's just putting all together smoothly again that's taking some practice. I used to play all these crazy "sports" games though...Dave Mirra, TH, Coolboarders, Xtreme series, etc.
Haha, I used to own shit at Dave Mirra. One of the few games that I feel like I "mastered" back in the day (War of the Monsters is another one, I would throw that on the highest difficulty and kick the AI's ass every time). I'd be interested in seeing that franchise rebooted in some way, but I feel like the gameplay has probably not aged well (I remember the controls being kind of wonky when you were getting used to it).

It has a 72 on Metacritic, but I know at least one pretentious hipster who didn't care for the game.
Metascores are stupid, but if you ever get around to playing it let me know how you like it. Don't say I didn't warn you though.

I don't generally go for facebook/twitter integration shit, but having the viewers of your stream be able to control some of what is happening is kind of a novel idea.
The horror game Daylight was actually the first to do that, where viewers could enter certain things in twitch chat and affect the gameplay (like have stuff jump out at the player). It's definitely a cool idea that I hope more games start experimenting with. Eventually it could make Twitch as much of a game as the one people are watching.

Yeah, good times lol. The first Mirra game on PS1 was definitely wonky until you got used to it. The crashes/bails were hilarious. I'd love to see some of that come back to current gen. Great gameplay, and the extreme sports games always seemed to have the best soundtracks.

Pretty sure I played Mat Hoffman as well, which if I remember right, was done by the TH guys...but I don't think I ever really likened it to Mirra at all and just couldn't play it as much.

You have to own another console with it as there is basically no 3rd party support for it.

Better like them kiddie nintendo games.

Pedophiles love the Wii U.

"Hey kids, come play mario!"

Should use that in their marketing.

Actually, now that I think about it, that Aaron Paul commercial is on all the freaking time. I remember Sony having a lot back around the holidays, but right now it's all Aaron Paul and Mario Kart.

The aaron paul the one with the guy from breaking bad who looks like he doesnt really give a shit to be in the commercial other than to get his paycheck?

That aaron paul?

So who else plans to drunk post in the thread tonight?
I could be down with this. Maybe a little intoxicated Fez streaming tonight too. Although I was drinking and streaming Contrast before and I wasn't doing so well...

Yes, but to be fair Aaron Paul looks and acts like that all the time.

Yeah, I never got into Matt Hoffman either. The bails were definitely funny in Dave Mirra. The one thing I remember most about the controls is that your bike would grind on rails like it had super strong magnets in the wheels. No matter what kind of weird angle you were in while doing a trick you could almost always stick to a rail or ledge and keep your combo going.

Well, yeah, I was basically saying Wii U is great as a secondary console. As for their first party titles, great game design is great game design and Nintendo still have the magic touch. Doesn't matter to me that they happen to be colorful, "happy" games (that's actually refreshing for me as there isn't a lot like that on the Xbox/PS platforms).

Yeah, if I was given a WiiU for free I would definitely play it.  But my Sony backlog plus my affinity for trophies means me actually paying for a WiiU is not gonna happen.  Even at $100 I think I'd be hesitant because all the games I want for it are going to be expensive as shit because Nintendo.

I'm sure it's like a Vita.  If you have one, you swear by it.  But you wouldn't want it to be your only console.

I never know if I'm supposed to search for all the relics and collectibles in Tomb Raider now, or come back later with a certain item.

I always have this problem in "Metroidvania" games. (I'm looking at you Batman Arkham....)

I'll spend 30 minutes trying to get something, only to check a FAQ and see I need X in order to obtain it.

Yeah, I hate that about Metroidvanias. I also refuse to even try for trophies that require multiple playthroughs that don't make significant changes (I plan on going for Infamous 2, for example) just to get everything.

people applaud nintendo's game design when it's basically the same crap each time. i'll give them a little props for 3d world/land. same situation as the elder scrolls series. same damn thing each time, just a little prettier. any other companies do that though, and they get crapped on. gamers know what they want about as much as women do.

if had to choose between wii u and vita as my only consoles, i'd take vita. i got a wii u cause of the target triple trade, and that's what went towards my ps4.

It's too early in the morning for CAG to be performing so shitty...
immediately checked the deals page, figured something was going down. apparently it's just cag

I never spend more than a minute on a collectible in Metroidvania style games before I've completed the game. If I can't figure it out in the first minute, there's probably a good chance I don't have the equipment necessary for it and I move on. It will still be there when I complete the game and want to go back for it.

My lunch plans got canceled so I think I'll just run home and play Far Cry for 45 mins.
I'm gonna start it tonight. It came down to it or Just Cause 2. I figure I'll end up buying Far Cry 4 way before we get a new Just Cause game, so going ahead and playing Far Cry 3 now will give me plenty of space between it and 4 to keep things fresh. Plenty of time to get to Just Cause later. May sound like silly reasoning but I had to make a choice somehow.

I have one, I swear at myself for buying it. My kids rarely play it. I thought that would change after the younger one begged for Mario Kart. It did for a few days. Now he just continues to play the Wii, GC, and N64 in his room instead.

I want to play Pikmin 3 at some point. If I ever do, it will be the most it has ever gotten used.

Pharmacrest isn't going to like that.

:(

I love my wii u and Nintendo games

Nintendo will forever be my 1st choice, with Sony a close second. Microsoft can go burst into flames for all I care.

I think I'm in a gaming funk. I've tried to play a few different games today and I'm just not feeling anything. I guess I'll go get that PS4 to cure it.
I've felt this way a bit myself lately. To be fair, I've picked a lot of the games I've played lately because they're short. Hoping a heavy hitter like Far Cry 3 is gonna bring the fun back.

I was in a gaming funk for a bit too. Then someone brought up blast shards, and I dug up Infamous again to try to get that trophy. That was fun...till i got stuck on 349. Now I curse all that were talking up blast shards in this thread. Maybe I'll drunk play it tonight looking for 350 and I can tell you all how I really feel about Mr. UglyPete.

The only problem with this plan is that Far Cry 3 looks a lot nicer than Just Cause so you may wind up playing Just Cause 2 years from now and curse my name since the games graphics are old.

I just played NIER and loved it, and it's probably the ugliest PS3 game I've ever played. Great graphics are nice and all, but bad graphics don't make me dislike a game.

That said, I'm not going to let several years pass before I play Just Cause anyway.

Go outside and don't play games for awhile til you want to play a game. Buying a PS4 probly won't help your funk. I'm a party pooper here but don't you have any ps3 backlog?

n yeah Resonance of Fate wasn't the hottest game but we put 100 hours into that. Gameplay is King

I figure this will help some of you here, easy way for amazon or if you want another retailer, gift card:

clubskinny.skinnycow.com

ignore all the pink girly crap and you can get a $10, $25 gift card pretty easy. I was saving for the $50, but they're running low on gift cards so I didn't want to risk not getting one.

You're welcome all of you :)

Last Tinker looks okay. The trailer didn't show enough combat to get a feel for that, though.

I gotta say I'm looking forward to next week.
The Last Tinker It looks really fun to me. Something like Spyro meets Tearaway. It is hard to tell much from that trailer. Comments suggested a possible PS+ discount. I'm not sure I'll bite for $20, but maybe for $13. From what the dev says it pushes the PS4 hardware which is good to see from a downloadable title for a change.

It's more like watered down Assassin's Creed platforming with really clumsy Arkham Asylum combat. Also unless they really improved the visuals from the PC version, it's definitely not pushing the PS4's limits (though it does look nice, and the colors really pop).
