Sega out of the sports business, Visual Concepts is sold

man.... damnit... i loved espn 2k5..... i hated madden... i shall never play football games again... well next years iteration that is

Very sad news. I think Sega could have sold them for more.

As cthcky33 put it
time for a moment of silence to comemorate the death of sega sports...

Sega is truly becoming an empty shell. It's like we've watched the life and death of it. Very sad.
They've been making bad decisions left and right lately. There past three or so Sonic games have been less than stellar, and instead of a new Nights (which everyone wants) or Shenmue III, they go with Matrix online. this is sad though, their sports games were good. Everyone go buy Outrun2!!!

Hey, I'm niot saying they didn't run themselves into the ground, but it's still sad.

I know, I was just kinda commenting on how I think they went downhill, besides the fact that the Dreamcast didn't sell well. By the way, why didn't it sell well, it was a good system, with good games. Was it just too soon out from the gates or what?

That and the fact that the PS2 blew it out of the water with it's graphical power and its versatility.

Plus, Sega pretty much gave up themselves. Once that happened, it was over. DC probably could have been a contender but Sega pulled the plug.

This is sad. Poor Sega. I hate EA!!! Sega got screwed. And i loved my $13 ESPN NFL 2k5 bout the week it came out. (I got it on sale). It made me cry that people passed up that game for $20 for $50 madden.

Although Madden still sold more overall, NFL 2K5 did pick up sales a lot this year, even selling more copies on Xbox than Madden. That $20 price cut is part of why this all happened (forcing EA to lower their prices and decide to buy the NFL license because they were scared of Sega gaining marketshare)

Well, there is some one positive thing about this. Atleast Sega/VC didn't produce something for next year, because without a license...it would have been the butt of all the jokes for madden fanboys.

visual concepts and kush will still be making the sports games, they just wont have any sega name on them at all (as if anyone even noticed any sega branding in the 2k5 games). its not like the core game engines are being dissolved or sold to different developers.

so without the sega name to fall on or the espn name, i wonder what they will call their sports games.

well, take-two will probably continue to make sports games so that's some silver lining. i can't play ea's NHL anymore, it's not even as good as hitz. well, i just hope sega finds another niche to dig itself into again. NiGHTS 2 anyone?

Man, that really sucks for gamer when you know VC makes great sports title and now we don't get them anymore.

I've got a sinking feeling that this will lead to the death of Sega. Maybe not now, but I don't see how this could not affect the company negatively.

Thanks a lot, EA...I don't care what anyone else says; in my mind, this happened because EA is trying to create a monopoly. Simplistic cause and effect, but it works for me...

They're still going to make sports games, just for TT now.

Its really disturbing that you can only get one football title. I mean, the only football game I bought was Madden. When Sega came out with their budget ESPN NFL, I gave it a shot and I was pleasently surprised. I did buy this years Madden, but I played it less and less (because I like ESPN NFL much more). It really is ashame that such a great company was attracting more attention (due to great price) was never given a chance to take advantage of the attention.

That's not entirely true. The DC was a great system, it's gaping flaw was it didn't carry the Sony logo.
I like the PS2, just think in alot of ways it suffers from Maddenism.

The PS2 stole any of the thunder that Sega had in the console market when it was announced. The DC was outclassed in a lot of categories by the PS2 despite being a very good system.

I don't like sports games, but I did buy ESPN NFL and NBA this year. I've always loved Sega, and I hate that this is happening. But as the industry grows, I guess change is bound to happen.

Damnit. Noooooo. I need my 2k6. Oh well it looks like instead of having a choice I will just have to not play sports titles anymore.
NFL 2K5 did pick up sales a lot this year, even selling more copies on Xbox than Madden.
That's thething that just makes me roll my eyes. The PS2 has been the casual gamers system this generation. And Madden has been the casual gamers football game. I hate the fact that, even though the 2K5 games were less than half the price of Madden, it still beat ESPN on the PS2, while the Xbox had ESPN beat EA. I just think that Madden simply sold because of its name, and the casual consumer didn't look into ESPN at all.

Although I consider myself to have a good grasp of the business world and economics, it doesn't mean that I agree with the whore known as Corporate America.

What's sad is that after so many quarters in the negative, Sega was finally making profits. Sega was able to revive itself from its many failures. And that Sega Sports was the largest contributor to that success. Not by selling a name, but by entering a market with high competition and climbing up to the top. Games are no longer made for people to enjoy, yet instead for companies to make shareholders happy.

I think Sega should sell the whole company to Nintendo. Then Nintendo should stick with the strategy they have now.. (and not the way of the whole European DS more adult-ish ad thing)

Bring back Sonic and Mario, together. Make some compliations discs. Throw some emulation projects together, bring back the Sega and Nintendo we grew up with. Release Rez 2 for GameCube :)

The reason the Xbox version sold better was because of the custom tracks and awesome halftime shows. Most people didn't have the HD for the PS2 and couldn't take advantage of it on the system. Plus Sega had established themselves online for the Xbox.

Once again, the hate should be directed towards the NFL. The NFL licenses to who they want. As much as I love Sega's ESPN NBA, Sega has been shooting their own selves in the foot for years. Don't get me wrong because I love my Sega hardware and games, but perhaps if Sega didn't fail with the Game Gear, Sega CD, 3X2, Saturn, and Nomad they would have had the money to properly compete. If Sega had the money it would has gotten that exclusivity for itself. Then the Madden fans would be having "Segaopoly" sig images. Then again, the only thing I don't understand is this...

"The ESPN Videogames line has not been a key profit driver in the North American market for Sega," Naoya Tsurumi, CEO of Sega of America, said in a statement.

If that is true then what the hell else made them money? It certanly wasn't Shinobi.

Think about when we had Gameday, Fever, ESPN and Madden Football. As an example, imagine WWE having 3 wrestling titles coming out on within a few weeks of each other on ONE system. One by Sega, one by EA and one 1st party for that particular system. Seems weird huh? Like I said in an earlier post, I am surprised exclusivity didn't come before, regardless of who it went to.

The Dreamcast died earyly because they based the operating system on Windows CE. This left the door wide open for hacking and piracy...very bad move. They should have developed their own proprietery software like Sony or Nintendo...much more difficult to hack. Dreamcast was the only system you can play pirated games on without a mod chip installation...led to rampant piracy and reduced game sales worldwide. Sure PS2, Xbox, GC has its fair share of piracy, but it's much more difficult and you have to install a risky mod chip to do it...the average person won't risk opening their system and voiding the warranty. Where as the Dreamcast...anyone can buy pirated games and play them right away without any mod chip whatsoever. There's your answer to the early death of the Dreamcast...my personal favorite system of all time. I bought 10 Dreamcast systems at EB when they were selling it for a mere $14.99. Later.

That's certainly a shame. Regarding what someone said something about Nintendo and Sega "teaming up", I would assume if Sega goes under and has to sell, the highest bidder would be Microsoft. With Rare and Sega under their belts, Microsoft could give the Xbox 2 some much needed franchises.

It does no good to keep it inside...Bill can read our minds, too.

But seriously, OF COURSE I'd love to see Sega's franchises become exclusive to Nintendo, but realistically, it's much more likely for maybe Sony, definitely Microsoft to cough up the kind of money it would take to buy a name like Sega. And keep in mind, this is all hypothetical. I'm fairly sure Sega could make Game Boy games forever and do plenty well to stay afloat.

Sega is NOT DEAD OR GONNA BE DEAD!!!!!

They've been making EXCELLENT decisions since they got out of the console buisness.

I remember they had 3.2 BILLION in debt when they went 3rd party now, this past 1 1/2 fiscal years they have posted a profit & cut there debt by 80%. I remember all this becuase i passed up buying there stock when it was less than $2 a share :(
