The reason the Xbox version sold better was because of the custom tracks and awesome halftime shows. Most people didn't have the HD for the PS2 and couldn't take advantage of it on the system. Plus Sega had established themselves online for the Xbox.
Once again, the hate should be directed towards the NFL. The NFL licenses to who they want. As much as I love Sega's ESPN NBA, Sega has been shooting their own selves in the foot for years. Don't get me wrong because I love my Sega hardware and games, but perhaps if Sega didn't fail with the Game Gear, Sega CD, 3X2, Saturn, and Nomad they would have had the money to properly compete. If Sega had the money it would has gotten that exclusivity for itself. Then the Madden fans would be having "Segaopoly" sig images. Then again, the only thing I don't understand is this...
"The ESPN Videogames line has not been a key profit driver in the North American market for Sega," Naoya Tsurumi, CEO of Sega of America, said in a statement.
If that is true then what the hell else made them money? It certanly wasn't Shinobi.
Think about when we had Gameday, Fever, ESPN and Madden Football. As an example, imagine WWE having 3 wrestling titles coming out on within a few weeks of each other on ONE system. One by Sega, one by EA and one 1st party for that particular system. Seems weird huh? Like I said in an earlier post, I am surprised exclusivity didn't come before, regardless of who it went to.
