So I bought a Zune... Mini Review 12/5 NEW Pictures + iPod Comparison
How is that possible? 320x240 is 4:3. Maybe the res is stretched.
I understand that. But look at the pictures below:

Sorry, can't show the iPod on since the battery is dead...lol.

I've had my Zune for about a month now since my nano stopped working and Apple defrauded me on my warranty.

Picture/video quality is very nice. The Zune is pretty laggy like all non-flash mp3 players. The Zune version of itunes is extremely slow and a resource hog but the overall layout is okay.

My Zune has a really bad problem with crashing for no reason. Almost any sudden movement and off it goes. Turn it on again and it's fine but it's so fucking annoying. Overall it's okay but if I could go back in time I wouldn't buy it.

I only have 12 gigs free and have not had it freeze on me. However I have used it for a total of 1 hour. Too busy putting videos and such on it first.

The software is so damn slow. Its sucks my resources dry.

If you haven't returned it yet, could you take a picture showing the difference in thickness between the two? Thanks

My camera is not good enough for that type of quality. It IS thicker, but its ok for me. Its primarily for me to watch or watch in my car.

That definitely looks like 4:3 to me. It just seems like it's widescreen when you look at it vertically.

Seriously? I've had my Zune software open for at least two days now and I haven't noticed any slowdown at all. I love the way it organizes my CD's cleanly and concisely with the artwork, iTunes just kinds of throws them all into one giant shitty looking list.

I haven't noticed any remarkable difference in the speed between the two.

To the OP/Roufuss/anyone else with a Zune that has a neutral opinion, how's the mp3 player's scratchability? Is it as easy to scratch as the Ipod?

The actual software is a billion times better than iTunes.. it never once locked up and transfers were really quick.

Everything was very intuitive and easy to use. As you scroll down a long list of MP3s, a large letter indicating which letter you're on appears.

This is the most wishful thinking I've ever read. The Zune software is completely unintuitive and almost unusable. It's a mess.

The whole video conversion deal is convoluted, and a circular d-pad just seems clunky after using a touchwheel or similar.

I've had mine sicne a day after it launched, and I haven't got a single scratch yet. I keep it it the soft case it came with, and it's usually in the same pocket that I keep my keys it, and I've even sat on it a few times by accident. I dropped it form about four feet up on to a hard tile floor at the tanning salon I go to, and I though for sure the screen would be cracked, but there wasn't even a mark.

thanks giz, great overview of your experience w/zune

i'm starting to get tired of waiting for the 'true video ipod' (oh shut up haters, it's COMING) so i've been thinking about zune lately

i have yet to see one in the wild though

Thanks for the info. That's really great to know. My Ipod, the minute I took it out it got scratched. The thing gets scratched instantly and it really is a pet peeve of mine as I keep extremely good care of my things.

I forgot, but what video formats does it allow again?

My Zune is still unscratched. The actual system itself is covered in a hard plastic/rubber. It does NOT attract fuzz/lint either. My screen is mint.

Daria is from BitTorent...if you want the episodes already converted PM me and i'll try and hook you up.

Yeah, same here.

Of course, I picked mine up at Best Buy (Circuit City was sold out thanks to the $40 off coupon) so it came with a free $30 leather protective case.

I've got about 15gigs free with a lot of movies and anime episodes stored on it.

Read around, you'll find lots of people annoyed with iTunes, especially when it locks up repeatedly.

It's your opinion, but it's an uninformed one. I had my wife and my parents try it out WITHOUT explaining anything, and they had zero problems. Unless they're super geniuses, that's just bs you're spreading.

The d-pad seems clunky until you actually use it. Shuffling is a billion times easier than the ipod ever was. Same with categorizing the songs/videos/etc.

I've used my wife's ipod.. the wheel is a novelty.. if you have a ton of songs, and just like rotating your thumb, more power to you. But oops, you have to go back a level in the tree.. no wait, another, and another..

As far as video conversion, again, that's your opinion. As someone who actually owns one, I think I have a little more qualified opinion.

Converting a video file doesn't take a lot of time at all.

One step conversion, two if you want it converted even faster.

*shrug*

With people going on about portable video product and WS here I'm led to ask has anyone heard yet about visors coming back for me to plug into any of these to watch the video on instead? I'm especially hoping I might see an HD one in the near future, even with support as low as 720p. Sorry but these pitiful screens don't satisfy for portability. The portable DVD one's would BARELY but I'd just as soon prefer full immersion in terms of watching.
