Alienware Arena Level 3+ giveaway, and I'm currently 1 point away from Level 3. I seem to have reached the daily points cap and therefore I am stuck for today.

So Africans haven't invented time yet?

Crikey, I knew it was third world and all, but...

Bluesnews:
Some details on the upcoming Gears of War 4 PC port from Mike Rayner, The Technical Director of The Coalition.
"Our focus on PC is to deliver a highly optimised, customisable experience first and foremost," Rayner tells us.

"Support for v-sync tearing has recently come to UWP [Universal Windows Platform] and we will be able to offer proper unlocked frame-rate support that gamers expect on day one. With Unreal Engine 4 and our own custom modifications, we can take much better advantage of multiple CPU cores, alleviating the game from being CPU-bound and allowing more room for the GPU to shine with enhanced visual quality or higher framerates. Single-player will not be locked to 30fps on PC."

Our analysis of the Gears of War E3 stage demo shows a rock-solid 30fps presentation at full 1080p resolution. The demo was confirmed by The Coalition as running on Xbox One hardware, and it looks as though the developers are repurposing console features in intriguing ways for the PC version.

Rayner also listed "a few items of note" the team are adding to the PC version. In his own words:
Dynamic resolution support (any resolution will be supported with a sensible dynamic field of view - including ultra-wide).
Increased texture resolution (up to 4K resolution for select texture groups).
A benchmark mode.
Full keyboard/mouse input remapping (including cover/run and roll split).
Far more comprehensive video settings.

"Today we sit at 28 different settings and we're thinking of ways to add more for people to really have full control," Rayner tells us. "Along with more settings, we're putting extra time into making it clear what impact a setting will have on GPU/CPU/VRAM so there is a clear correlation between a setting change and its performance impact."

We've gotta find another pawprint, that's our second clue, we put it in our notebook, cuz they're who's news? Blue's News!

i.e. does anybody care about Gears of War these days? Aside from people who make Marcus Fenix and Cole Train homoerotica
I do. I still want Gears 2, 3, and Judgment to hit the PC.

I really liked Gears 1 PC.

In non-gaming news topics, I'm heading to D.C. for work for the next 11 days. Do any CAGs have any recommendations for good places to eat, drink or things to do (non-monument related)? I figure if I have enough tourist-y stuff on my mind I'll get to forget about buying games for the next couple of weeks.

Work -->    :beer: -->   :whee:  -->   :lol:  -->    :beer: -->   :D/  -->  Sleep  -->   :headache:  -->  Repeat x10

EDIT: Hmm. That flow-emoji-chart makes it look like I'm there to party and embrace the singles lifestyle. I'll be busy with work but evenings and weekends are generally wide open.

Vaccaro's for gelato and cannoli if you make it to Baltimore. They used to have a small DC satellite location but I don't think it's there anymore. Anyway the original location is best. It's in Little Italy near Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

For something a little offbeat also in Baltimore is the Blacks in Wax museum. It's not on the nicest of neighborhoods though.

Been years since I was in DC and most of what can think of there is just the usual crap, tourist junk and bars.

I went to the International Spy Museum and Crime Museum a few years back. They are touristy but not the usual national history crap. I didn't really eat anything of note there. We went to a Mexican tapas restaurant and had cricket or grasshopper tacos (I forget which). So if that's your thing.

Last time I was in the area I was actually in VA near the Potomac Mills mall. There was a great Afghan buffet there. But that's pretty far south.

Now that I think about it, I go to the area more often that I realize, but I never really do anything of note in DC itself. I try to avoid it. I tried Ben's Chili thing that's "famous" but it honestly sucked balls. I went to the Smithsonian Zoo once because it's free but it's the lamest zoo ever. I mean, it was hot, but I barely saw any animals. They were all like locked up or something.

In conclusion, DC sucks and #NeverTrump.

DC doesn't completely suck. Most of Vertigo is pretty good.

El Pollo Rico had good Peruvian chicken back when I was there. There was a sub place called Kenny's that had decent cheesesteaks and also had Chinese food. What could be better? I feel like they were both in the Wheaton/Silver Spring area.

Of course they may both be terrible and my head is merely clouded with nostalgia.

Don't forgot to stop in Rockville and see Bethesda.

I usually count the animals being locked up as a positive thing. Or were you hoping to get some one on one time in?

Do you guys think the Humble Bundle is worth getting if the only game I already own in it is Civ 5? I don't really "collect" Steam games, just get and play the ones I like. I enjoyed the first two Borderlands games but never got The Pre-Sequel, and I've been wanting to try an NBA game. I also would be lying if I said I wasn't a little interested in trying Battleborn to see if it's really that bad...

It sounds worth it in the situation you describe. Not to mention you can pick your own charity on this one.

If I recall, from some British ex-pat mentioning it, isn't there a Nando's in DC? In fact just looked it up and there are a ton in the area. British say it's really good so... *shrugs*

Cheeky Nando's is our best attempt at a meme. It's just chicken. Nothing to get excited about. It's favoured by footballers which gave it some kind of cult following amongst #LADS but that's about it.

LLADS LADS LADS #bants

I don't give a shit about Gearbox anymore so I can't really comment on the $15 tier (I'm not gonna bother with those games), but The Darkness II, Spec Ops: The Line, Mafia II and NBA 2K16 are all easily worth the BTA price (almost $9). Even Duke Nukem Forever was enjoyable in its own way.

Tim Sweeney thinks Microsoft will make Steam "progressively worse" with Windows 10 patches

"Slowly, over the next five years, they will force-patch Windows 10 to make Steam progressively worse and more broken. They’ll never completely break it, but will continue to break it until, in five years, people are so fed up that Steam is buggy that the Windows Store seems like an ideal alternative. That’s exactly what they did to their previous competitors in other areas. Now they’re doing it to Steam. It’s only just starting to become visible. Microsoft might not be competent enough to succeed with their plan, but they’re certainly trying."

I'm surprised with Windows 8 back in the day when they basically threw Windows Store closer to the Windows OS's core, M$ didn't try to quickly go the Apple route to lock their OS down to just the Windows Store for digital game-stores.

Microsoft did, more or less, kill Securom and other DRM's on their Windows 7 & above OS's (unless you use some of their work-arounds), right? They could do the same to Steam, if they feel like it.

The day M$ decides to flip the switch to basically render Win32 app's useless so those app's don't work anymore and/or that those app's are buggy as hell to basically try to kill Steam to the point that Windows Store + WUP (Window Universal Platform) is the only game store-front + game-client in town on Windows - that'll be the day M$ will really hurt Windows and both dev's/pub's & gamers will finally make the move to SteamOS.

For years, gamers been sticking w/ Windows b/c they (Microsoft) have a strong-hold on the OS Market b/c there are already so many games are already available on this platform (and still work) for especially the past; the present; and likely there'll be games there in the future as well.

If M$ gives gamers + dev's/publishers reasons to either ditch Windows entirely b/c they want to be the only major Digital Game Store in Windows Town and/or to dual-boot Windows (for old games) + SteamOS (for newer games), they'll do it.

Don't be foolish, Microsoft.

Meh, if you need Windows, then SteamOS isn't going to cut it. At worst, people would just dual boot to whatever OS they needed at the time. But I really doubt Windows is even going that route. Just more tin hat-ism with no real basis. Windows is trying to promote it's game store with exclusives, not by crippling the competition.

Updated Scambound Starbound review/thoughts:

If you're thinking about buying this game expecting Terraria... don't. Whereas Terraria could be considered a Metroidvania of sorts in that you progress your character exploring a world, gathering health/magic power ups and crafting/looting increasing powerful items; Starbound is primarily an E-Larper paradise.

Itemization sucks.  Armor is crafted on a tier-basis like Terraria but the ore is not particularly difficult to obtain.  You can even buy it from a shop for pixels if you don't want to dig for it.  I think there's about four or five tiers of armor with no variation until you get to the final tier where you can choose between a focus on energy (powers your ranged/gun attacks), health/melee, or a balance.  That's it.  It doesn't have anywhere near the armor variety Terraria has.  Weapon-wise you aren't going to bother crafting anything because the crafted stuff sucks in comparison to the weapons you'll randomly loot in chests and crates lying around settlements.  It's sort of like Borderlands where you stumble upon upgrades (but without the wacky variations).  It's not even challenging.  You can just loot crates in friendly npc villages and find the same stuff you would in a 'micro-dungeon' full of hostile mobs.  There are no trinkets or anything similar to farm/specialize your character.  There's a backpack thing you use that enables you to survive the scaling tiers of planets and you upgrade it as you go.  You can stick an augment in them but it's fairly bland like +damage, +health, light halo, etc.

Progression wise you're led through a story were you have to 'fill the bar' by scanning art objects of a given race and then you move on to a boss 'mission' where you go through a static level (can't use your building tool) and fight a boss at the end.  The ones I've faced have all been pretty shitty.  Like 1980's Capcom game shitty.  Some have fixed loot (one dropped a good sword) but for the most part you get nothing other than a random chest which usually has worthless crap in it.  You don't farm the bosses like you do in Terraria.  They don't have loot tables and killing them isn't required to gear up to tackle future content.  They're just there to tick off the 'kwest complete' requirement so you can move on to the next fill the bar hunt and do another shitty boss mission.  You could conceivably just ignore the story and go farm the planets to get the best tier of armor right off the bat but it's boring.  The two are totally divorced from each other making the ore/mat farming uninteresting and tedious.

Aside from that... well... the other stuff is all 'optional' in the sense that it's not tied to progression or the story at all.  Do you want to make a colony of people?  Knock yourself out!  Make a little tram running through it?  A garden?  A zoo?  Want to collect fossils?  Want to raise pets?!?!  Ride around on a hoverbike that handles like shit?!?!  O BOI!

They do have random quest but they're about as involved as 1980's Zelda 2 Adventures of Link.  Variations include : Kill X, Escort Y, and a laughably bad chain one where you have to go back and forth between the quest giver and some npc standing three feet away passing notes and shit.  The rewards are a random bag of crap complete with a party tweeeeeeeet sound when you open them and get your crap.  You can upgrade your digging tool and a few abilities like jump and dash but these are just shittier versions of abilities you got from items in Terraria.  And the upgrade tokens are lying around everywhere in crates.  Like I said, you can just walk through friendly towns with zero risk and loot 50+ crates.

Are there hundreds of planets?  You bet.  Is it cool to see some of the towns and dungeons the first couple of times?  Sure.  After that you realize it's all cut and paste.  And it's not particularly engaging walking through the 50th town doing random pass my friend a note quests while the npcs jabber derka derka der.  There's no reason to have a hundred planets.  Or even 50 or even more than 10.

If you have a young child then it's a great game to spend time with them.  If you're an old cynical CAG then I doubt you'll enjoy this game unless you like Maple Story.

Tldr: Main difference between this and Terraria?  Terraria's focus is on combat and character progression but provides the tools for people who want to build and e-larp.  Starbound's focus is on e-larping and side diversions and has horrible character progression, itemization, and bosses.
