After years and years of hype I'm sure they had to rush it out the door. You go from ark survivor to hero of the resistance in a matter of hours without much of an explanation other than 'these are the bad guys.' The 'main' antagonist isn't mentioned until the last 20% or so of the game and you never actually encounter him. Compared to the other ruins/maps the Authority base was very bland and, yes, the wave defense ending without any kind of boss fight leaves you wondering what the hell they were thinking.

They tried to do too much with the racing, mini-games, psuedo-arpg aspects (quests, loot), the co-op mode, etc. -- time that would have been better spent fleshing out the main single player narrative.
Hey, Id's got a reputation + known for closet-monsters, pulling things out of their ass, and having crummy endings. ;)

I liked Rage when I played it on the mighty PS3.

Just sayin'.
The mechanics are mostly fine. The AI can be crappy at times but the ability to kill things with a variety of gadgets makes up for it. Took me around 15-20 hours to finish so there's plenty of game there; although I would have had a more favorable impression had it been 10 hours with a better ending.

I don't know if I'd call the ending 'bad' (like I'd call the Risen 1 ending with it's dance dance revolution boss), it's just... missing. Which I suppose is bad in and of itself. There's no cliffhanger or unresolved questions it's simply a matter of shallow writing.

I had a blast w/ RAGE and its shooting mechanics + gadgets. That stuff was fantastic.

Certainly, while the RAGE base-game had more personality, character, + NPC's than most Id games - the game doesn't have a great story + plot at all. I guess we really just shouldn't play Id games for story, plot + an actual ending. ;)

Yes - a game just dropping and ending right in the middle of a developing plot-line and story-line - an actually important moment in the game, albeit - is horrible. It's almost as if there's at least either 1/2 or 1/3rd of the story-arc here that just went out the window b/c Zenimax said, "Game been in the works for around 7 years - release it now!"

About Risen 1's final boss - the rest of the game was really good, but that boss-fight was garbage. Even Risen 2 had a more satisfying ending than Risen 1.

I'm present seeking sage advice on the new Lego LotR bundle being offered from Bundle Stars:   Many of you wise folk wouldn't chance fate by entering the pc master race on a used 7950, but that potential mistake has already been made.  So here I am before your counsel as to prevent any future violation of CAG statutes.

TL;DR   Should I buy this extremely tempting, plasticky-figured bundle of the modern entertainment software type?

I've only played LOTR: War in the North.

Yeah, if you are interested in that game - don't buy it for that.

It's one of the few games I was in the midst of + tried to give a chance, that I actually dropped b/c I just didn't care for it.

Can't speak on the other LoTR stuff, though.

The Lego games normally go on sale for about $5 each, so if you want the Lego games, it's like getting the rest for free.

I'm only mildly interested in that particular title.  If I ever got to it, I feel like I'd end up doing the same as you unfortunately.  I've not played a Lego game on PC (unless you count some of the travesties of the earlier pc days), nor have I tried any since Star Wars.  Furthermore, I feel like one day these Lego games are gonna end up in some mega bundle that I should buy from a crazy Russian after a fit w/ my wife and an extended night out at the pub.  *Unless licensing issues prevent that from ever happening*

I've been peeking in at CAG a bit but I've mostly been away for a couple months. I'm trying not to get all wallet-happy again.

I disagree, I thought War in the North was good. Playing it in coop makes it a lot more entertaining though.

The real stinker in that bundle is Guardians of Middle-Earth. The only thing that game had going for it was it was on consoles, so it didn't have to compete with other MOBA's. You have a lot better options for MOBA's on PC so it's not even worth playing.

I've not played a Lego game on PC (unless you count some of the travesties of the earlier pc days), nor have I tried any since Star Wars.
If you just want a Lego game, wait for Lego Batman 2 or Lego Marvel to go on sale, they're better than the LOTR ones.

Eh, I don't know what this guy's talking about--War in the North is the only reason to get this bundle.

But don't do it anyway, because it's been in a Humble before--just troll the trade thread for cheap Steam keys.

Ditto for the Guardians of Middle Earth stuff.

If you really like LEGO games, get the BS bundle. Otherwise, skip it and get the individual bits you might want for much cheaper elsewhere.

Perfect!  Thanks again for imparting your collective wisdom.  Saves me some nickels for the impending seasonal sales that are surely going to diminish my ability to resist temptation.

I'd put Batman 2 after LotR, but whatever.

Lego Marvel > Lego LotR > Lego Batman 2 > other Lego games > Lego Hobbit. Lego Star Wars: Clone Wars was surprisingly good, but I don't actually know the source material for it.

Welp I know most of you hep cats keep your entire libraries installed.  If I'm not playing something or going to play in the near future I usually just uninstall.

Given how much many of these newer games want to take up for space at 40-55 GB of space - i.e. FF13 PC, M-E:SoM PC, CoD:G PC, upcoming CoD: AW PC, etc - yeah, might be a damn good idea.

EDIT:

Wow - if that's the case, given how I feel about LOTR:WITN, then that whole bundle must be garbage. ;)

Rest of Risen 1 is a really good amalgamation of Gothic 1 and 2.  Shame it ended so horribly.

Thinking about kickin' it ol' skool with a 1st/3rd person RPG.  Think I've got it down to:

  • Gothic 1
  • Risen 1
  • Fable: Lost Chapters
  • Witcher 1
  • Dark Messiah of Might & Magic

Bueller? Bueller?  What do I go wit?

Did anyone happen to see what Halloween deals Gamefly Digital had yesterday? I saw they were doing a Halloween week, but I somehow missed that the games on sale would be changing everyday.

War In The North is incredibly shallow and wholly unfulfilling. Great world, dreary gameplay.

If you're planning on getting the Lego games anyway then this is a good bundle. It'll allow you to satisfy your curiosity for WitN without spending too much money.

Also, you'll get to experience that most rare of things: a game on which MysterD and Mooby agree on.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that's a fucking paradox.

:whistle2:k

Can someone help me understand why people undercut card prices so much? I see cards with histories at $.40 or $0.50, but once it drops in a bundle people sell for $0.10 or less.

I'd also like to jump on the "risens final boss was shit" bandwagon. the game as a whole was enjoyable enough, although nothing I'd likely want to play through a second time. That boss was horrid though

Supply and demand?
Right, but the drop seems too steep. Once a game is bundled the card prices immediately fall to ~$0.10. I guess they go that low because that's what people are willing to pay on average? Seems to me people could sell the cards for a little extra if they were a bit more patient vs. wanting to make the sale upon listing.

Rogue. Top-down ASCII is a 3rd-person perspective, amirite?

LOL. Yea, I mean I'm not new to how the markets work, but I'm still amused at how instead of people undercutting by a few cents at a time, they just drop the value of the cards by as much as 80% immediately.

Maybe they need virtual money for their virtual drug habit in Second Life...or something....don't judge me.

People want immediate payout. If you've played MMO games where they have functional auction houses, you see the same thing there. However the difference between Steam and an MMO is that there are a lot less fluctuations and it tends to only go down in price bearing rare circumstance. The main reason being in this case, like mentioned before, supply and demand. High supply with lower demand coupled with people wanting immediate results/satisfaction/payout.

The pricing of steam cards will always be a mystery. Like why are the anime looking cards worth a lot ?

In my opinion, games with a lot of cards like Awesomenauts or Pixel Piracy, should cost less per card because there's many to collect and vice versa.

But what bothers me the most is that a game like CSGO with 5 cards, goes for 5-6 cents per card. And a game like Bastion, with the same amount of cards, goes for triple.

I have no clue what retarded monkey is pushing the buttons over at GMG but after voting in the Joystick awards and getting jipped out of a code for Enemy Unknown, they have now sent me a THIRD code to get Enemy Within at 80% off.

Salt in the wound:  The e-mail says, "Voting in the 32nd Golden Joysticks has come to an end; fingers crossed your favourite wins! We hope too that you managed to grab a free copy of XCOM: Enemy Unknown."

If anybody wants it, apply it after EW is already in your cart:
