Superstar Billy Graham's wrestling topic

Eh, it was a new set. Nothing earth shattering at all. Though the led lights will allow for customization such that, even if they're using it for all three shows, it's easy to somewhat disguise that fact.

I'm repulsed by the led lightscreen at the entrance level (where wrestlers come out, or do interviews at the top of the ramp) being used to advertise the PPV for the whole fuckin' show. Product placement is fine, but this is tacky. It's one step away from writing "GOLDENPALACE.COM" (or "ROYAL RUMBLE ON PPV SUNDAY!) on every wrestler's body and tights. Yuck.
How was the new set?
Massive and way over the top. It looks like something they would build for Wrestlemania.

My only problem with it is that they are going to use it on every show which is kind of blah since there isn't alot they could do to change it up.

I actually didn't really pay much attention to the new set. It is different, but doesn't really stand out as 'whoa this is completely wrong' or anything. I liked how the entire set changed for the wrestler's entrances, especially the curved piece on the left side that changed to match each wrestler's theme, such as HHH's hammer.

You guys know that whoever has the last laugh on a show before a PPV is the one who loses at the PPV.

Hardy hurting Orton on Monday means that Hardy will lose. If this SmackDown Rey is left standing tall by the end of the show, then that means hes not gonna win at the PPV.

Wouldn't it be better if the titles changed hands more often. I don't mean weekly, monthly maybe?

They've already been doing the thing where they hang Wrestlemania banners all over the place like three months before the actual event... and during the closing moments of a show they'd always be sure to get a clear shot of the banner in the background.

Actually I found it more annoying when they'd put those official website URL's under the graphic for a wrestler's name every time they did their entrance. Like, Triple H would come out and they'd put "WWEHHH.COM" under his name... Thankfully that didn't last too long.

Then why bother having titles and such? Or even title defense if the titles are treated as a prop rather than as a prize that one might go above and beyond to win? Yes I know that wrestling is predetermined but at least let me suspend myself into the drama and action of the show. Having the title change hands frequently in the end to me pulls me away from that. However having a person who holds the belt for a good amount of time and defends it successfully only adds a better realism to the product.

Hopefully you all get where I am coming from on this.

I love long title reigns (walks on the beach, etc...), I just don't like Orton having a long title reign (although I'm coming around on him as a person, he seems to have matured since the European jackassery).

I'm not going to make a set of Royal Rumble picks but I'd like to see Orton lose his belt to Hardy (perhaps only until the next PPV) and Edge retain against Rey.

On a weird side note... Did anyone else notice that Mickie's pants were riding extremly low for her whole match vs. Beth Phoenix? My wife was laughing at the constant "coin slot" flashes throughout the match. Suppose this was more noticible due to HD, or was Mickie just wearing an unfortunate outfit?

Hardy as champ would be awesome, but I think they'll have Orton win at the Rumble, and then give it to Hardy later. He's incredibly over, has become a more well-rounded wrestler, and is getting better on the mic. He'd be a great short-term champion, and then if things take off (which could happen given how over he is), they could make it a long-term thing, which leads me to thinking that the best time for it would be after 'Mania. Possibly Backlash, with him as the MITB winner.

I noticed Mickie's pants falling, leading to many ass crack shots even in standard def. That was a fine match even without the partial booty nudity.

The new Raw set is mind-blowing for a weekly TV show, although now the problem becomes "how will they top themselves for PPVs?", because there's no way they can get away with having worse sets on the PPVs. That Raw set is almost on par with some of DSE's PRIDE sets, which were remarkable and worlds ahead of WWE's.

Here's a shot of Cena today, just a few months after pec reattachment surgery -

The pose reminds me of an MK III versus screen. Maybe he'll come back against Kabal.

They definitely were extremely low. The camera was cutting every time she had her back it, so I'd say they were actually too low and not just due to the HD.

You think they'd have Hardy go into WrestleMania as the champion? I doubt they'll give it to him, personally.

It's important, if you're going to make someone the champ, to not wait too long to pull the trigger. I think Triple H's first major title feud resulted in him winning the belt - and contrast that with TNA's "let's wait just a bit longer" approach with Samoa Joe, and how they've ruined him in the process of thinking they're building anticipation.

It can't be done with everyone, of course - but it is important nonetheless.

EDIT: AJ Styles vs. Tiger Mask on next week's Impact. Potential fucking awesome.

By "later", I mean after 'Mania, as Hardy isn't someone should should hold THE world title going into the biggest show of the year, but he's someone who should be given a chance to hold it sometime this year. I'm a bit concerned about his title-winning program being as good as this one, which is by far the best storyline he's been involved in as a singles wrestler.

AJ vs. Tiger Mask IV should be good if TM IV steps up on the U.S. stage. The true IWGP champion is wrestling on Xplosion, against Elix Skipper... good God. Hell of a reason to journey halfway across the globe.

WWE's doing a good job of acting like the ECW World title is on par with at least SD's World title, which is good, as it was just clearly the C-brand world belt since they took it off Lashley when he went to Raw.

finally got to see a torrent of raw in hd and boy did that blow.. im hoping it was just the encode but there was a serious real lack of detail..

It was a HD encode downsampled to SD which basically means it wasn't a real HD download in the first place.

Anyway, to clarify why I'm against Hardy as champion, the fact is that although having Hardy win the belt may be exciting, his title run will get staler than a loaf of bread on a rainy day. Who does he have to fued with? JBL? Triple H?

I just can't see it working out well in the long run is all I'm saying.

That's just my opinion of course, but at least Orton looks like he can feud with anyone and make them look like a legit contender to the belt. Even Cena had problems pulling that off at times.

Personally I think Orton will retain through Wrestlemania and then drop the belt to Cena. Edge on the other hand will drop his belt to Taker at 'Mania.

Hardy is awesome right now and I love seeing him go after the belt every night because his passion is really coming out, but this isn't his time right now and a Hardy title run would suck.

The way I would do it is to have Orton drop the belt to Cena after Wrestlemania and then for Cena to drop the belt to Hardy, which would give Hardy much more to work with (and perhaps even allow for a Cena heel turn).

As it is, Hardy's role to build up the undercard is working out tremendously and in the long run will build to a better long-term title run for Hardy. A short term title run would be horrible for Hardy as it would be meaningless. In the long run, once they've got more top tier heels, Hardy as champion would be great.

I can see it both ways and I do think that Orton has grown into a tremendous heel. That being said, Jeff Hardy is going to fucking kill himself diving off something someday and I'd hate for that to happen before he gets to be a World Champion. It's a selfish justification but hey, I don't think I own any WWE stock.
God why are they wasting our time with this diva shit? They always end the exact same way.
People watch it. I'm not happy about that fact, either, but evidently people think they can get away with watching pseudo-porn (or, at least, Playboy/Maxim-quality stuff) without having the sort of depressed/embarrassed attitude that comes with storing copies of Penthouse in their mattress? I dunno.

Where the hell did Lena Yada come from? How long has she been around?

I don't mind the cheesecake, but use it in the context of pro wrestling, please. None of these segments matter in the long run. Make them matter.

Are there any current heel female managers? Why not make Lena or Layla one of them?

EDIT: Oh, boy. It's Flippy Kingston. Watch him flip everywhere. And he's wrestling Mini Tomko.

EDIT2: What a dogshit awful match. It's a 7.0 on the Jackie Gayda scale. Send him back to Louisville. Or Florida. Or send him back to Jamaica and give him his walking papers.

No doubt. It even seemed like Khali was smirking on a few brief moments.

The way the poor kid sells everything is genius. I don't laugh very much when watching wrestling anymore, let along out loud. I was rolling at how he took the chop from Khali to start the match.

I really imagine Vince backstage screaming into Joey's headset "be sure to mention that he's overcoming the odds, we'll show those stupid fucks on the internet to dislike Cena"

I'm not watching ECW at the moment, I'm not sure what you mean, Sporadic.

Purple, I agree about his expression then, but the sort of "oh fuck!" combined with "well, that's life, I suppose" when Khali was announced was a personal favorite. Like when Wile E. Coyote realizes he's no longer walking on the cliff...just before he falls, his reaction is a hilariously calm "well, this sucks."

Chavo is the new ECW champion. Although I don't agree with taking the belt off Punk (big surprise huh?), I can understand why they did it as it gets both Chavo and Edge over even more as heels and gives Punk someone to feud with.

Awesome, we might as well rename ECW, Tuesday Night Heat.
I'm not watching ECW at the moment, I'm not sure what you mean, Sporadic.
It was a joke.

Joey said the phrase "overcoming the odds" no less than 4 times at the very beginning of the CM Punk/Chavo match

Punk is an internet darling and that phrase is usually used in a negative matter by internet fans to make fun of Cena.

Ah, I see.

Chavo as champ? I'm not pleased, but I'm not pissed. I'm just kinda..."oh, Chavo."

Not "Oooooooh, Chaaaa~vo!" But, "Oh. Chavo."

Maybe they're blaming Punk for the stagnant dogshit ratings on ECW? Oh well.

If nothing else, I do look forward to the collective cries of the IWC. At least *that* will be entertaining.

Hey Myke, Jack Evans injured his face in Japan sometime yesterday or today and may not make the Dayton/Chicago double shot.

Just thought you should know.

That was pretty much my response. It went something like
Errr.... Okay.

I wonder where this goes...
Probably Chavo vs. Punk at Wrestlemania?

He broke his face? Heh.

Oh well. I like the guy as a wrestler and especially as a heel, but I'm just going to enjoy myself. As long as a guy like "Fast Eddie" isn't in the main event, I'll be just peachy.

Is BJ Whitmer still working for ROH? I haven't seen him in a bit.

Thanks for the heads up, though.

Whitmer never left. He went on a losing streak and then joined up with the Hangmen 3 (Adam Pearce, Brent Albright, and BJ Whitmer). Whitmer had his blonde buzzcut Mr. Kennedy look going there for a while but he's dyed his hair pitch black now.

In fact, he's been on every PPV.

My only complaint about Chavo winning the title tonight is that they gave away a title change on TV for free when the Rumble is what..... a few days away. Not the smartest thinking on that.

Oh, and let's not forget that no DQ rule. Seeing that Edge was out there on play by play..... I knew it was a matter of time before Edge would interfere in the match and cost CM Punk the match (and the title).

The Colin Delaney stuff continued to rule, while the women's showcase thing was okay - nothing particularly memorable aside from Coach dancing, then yelling at Layla to start the stupid dance-off. I was surprised to see Shelton eliminate Kane in the mini-Rumble, and I liked Kofi's debut, although there were a couple of rough patches, he stood out with his fighting stance and athleticism. Since they're in HD, and he's new to the show, it would probably be best to give him a finisher that can't be so easily exposed as his big spinny kick.

Chavo-Punk was their usual good, but forgettable match. I was glad to see Chavo finally get a singles belt higher than the cruiserweight title, but with the interference, and overall cold feeling from the crowd about him and this Punk feud, it feel a bit flat. I like the idea of him being an Edge flunky though, so I'm interested in seeing where they go with that part of the story. Also, the "YOU ARE A CHOAD" and "I PAID TO SEE MATT HARDY" signs that appeared above Edge after the ECW title win were awesome, as was the massive statistic-heavy Royal Rumble video package. I now care about who enters at number 27 due to that damn thing.

Random items from the TNA tapings...

TNA taped Abyss and Judas Mesias in a No-Rope Barbed Wire match. The match was taped in Orlando and will be inserted into the live feed for TNA's Against All Odds. It was taped in Orlando because the South Carolina Athletic Commission wouldn't allow TNA to use a barbed wire match at their PPV.

Things to watch for for the 1/31 taping - AJ Styles against Tiger Mask, and Kaz wrestled Black Reign in a "Misty The Rat on a Pole match".

Kaz and Black Reign. Lawd a'mighty.

Abyss and James Mitchell. Lawd a'mighty.

I'm embarrassed to be a wrestling fan when I watch that stuff by myself.

Kofi certainly has potential I will say. I however get the feeling he'll be just like Carlito. Pushed hard and fast at first, puts on good matches on ECW and eventually Smackdown. Then moved to RAW where in a matter of a month he'll be forgotten about in the midcard and whenever on TV be presented as "eeehhhh who cares when's the next HHH/Cena/Orton bit on."

I'd love to be wrong on this..... but I just got that feeling.

On the contrary, you should be very pleased. After putting over Chavo at WM, Punk can be moved over to SD to feud with Edge. Lord knows we don't need another Batista/Edge match.

Plus, if you're lucky Taker will be champ by then, so Punk will actually have a shot at beating Edge once or twice.

Of course if WWE were really smart they'd have Punk turn heel and join Edge, as I think a cocky heel Punk would mesh all too well with Edge, but don't count on that happening with Punk's present fan base. Plus the whole "straightedge" thing isn't something WWE is going to want to shed a negative light on.

The thing here is that belt doesn't matter anymore. It's like being the Velocity champion, who cares? Once Big Show, RVD and Kurt all left, ECW became a glorified version of OVW.

If nothing else, I do look forward to the collective cries of the IWC. At least *that* will be entertaining.

Undoubtedly the best part of this.

Chavo as ECW champ huh? If this would have happened six months ago I would have been outraged as I love CM Punk, but I honestly haven't watched ECW since they starting bringing Smackdown over, so I really don't even care. Its not like that belt even matters.

I wonder if he said something to the effect of "You say your name is Vince and you love to be the boss, but I say your name is Vince and you're a BASTARD!"
