Surprisingly The Last Movie You Saw Didn't Suck Pt. 2

The Super Inframan aka Chinese Ultraman.

It's a B-movie but more well designed than a typical Shaw Brothers flick, as it required the use of Japanese made costumes, as Hong Kong didn't have a superhero industry at the time.  Just shut your brain off and watch some kung fu and explosions. A damn shame that they never made a sequel or tv show, and nothing today even matches the insanity. I find modern era Kamen Rider/Power Ranger shows to either be well-written (which are few) or just bland and a cheap excuse to sell toys (most of them). And neither are gleefully insane.

The extras on the DVD are as long as the movie BUT... they're all trailer to HK movies. The first set was pretty interesting, as Celestial Pictures remastered the heck out of these old movies to the point that a Blu-Ray is possible. Gordon Liu and co. in the Legendary Weapons of China never looked so good. And they're a lot more colorful than what I've even seen of DVDs of HK films from 20 years ago!  The second set was pretty awful in comparison and even had a trailer of that Iron Head guy from Shaolin Soccer banking off the success of that movie with him playing some deranged crossdresser. I wish I didn't see the second set...

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - 4/5 - I actually enjoyed this as much as I did the first film. Like the first film, it's very unnatural in it's flow and narrative, but that's one of the primary reasons it's hilarious. It does get out of hand at the end (much like the first), though.

American Hustle - 5/5 - Wow, that might be film of the year, though in my heart it will always be Iron Man 3. But in terms of Oscar-worthy films, I'd say either American Hustle or 12 Years A Slave are the best of the year. Christian Bale was fantastic. The best role he's ever had.

47 Ronin - 0.5/5 - Good lord that was terrible. Such a fantastic international cast was squandered for a cliched, boring and one-dimensional script. This movie is going to flop hardcore. I'd be surprised of Reeves ever gets another starring role in any film.

2 Guns - This one had potential but I felt it came up short because it felt more like a comedy than a serious crime thriller.

Finally saw Skyfall this weekend. It was ok and an interesting change of pace, but it still seems like they couldn't really hammer down a coherent theme. I'm glad I skipped this in the theaters and will probably skip the next one too.

Skyfall had some really pretty shots and that was about it (Beijing was especially cool). As a movie though I think I even liked Quantum better.

Now You See Me - 3/5

Entertaining movie but I couldn't help but feel like something was lost in translation. Also, could have done without Morgan Freeman explaining the plot after the fact. As a director you should give the viewer enough clues and let them figure it out instead of spoonfeeding the plot to them.

DOA: Dead or Alive: 2.5/5

Was mostly dumb and stupid, but once Hogan and Zack got beat, the movie just got worse. Found it funny that they had a volleyball scene because of course they did. Kasumi's storyline was so underdeveloped (as well as Kasumi herself compared to her game counterpart) that she shouldn't have bothered at all.

Also, for a franchise built on T&A, I was expecting more...fanservice.

I watched Jobs and after watching Jobs I immediately watched Social Network cuz it's a much better film.

In Jobs' defense though, anything with Justin Timberlake is much better than anything else.

The love guru would like to have words with you...

I like his music but when I see him on camera I just don't know why I dislike him, though he's not bad in.social network.

This Is The End. It was really funny and really ridiculous.
ehh no, the most retarded movie I have ever watched.

The love guru would like to have words with you...

I don't care his music and when I see him on camera I just don't know why I still dislike him, though he's not bad in.social network.
I agree with you with this fixed statement, I simply don't know why.

and...

Ain't Them Bodies Saints

I did a blog post on here of my fave 2013 movies if any of yall want to check that out.

The Wolverine-Extended Version.

Didn't really add much to the theatrical cut, but nice to watch it on my TV rather than a tiny airplane seatback screen.   Wish they had the extended version on the 3D disc though.

Vanilla Sky - Old but it was rather amazing imo. It totally messes with your head and you get one of those "endings" where you never really know.

I really wanted to love it, but there's so many flaws. It has great quotes though.
Well much of what i though were flaws seemed to be intentional. Then again, it really is all in how each of us see things. I really misjudged the movie about 20 minutes in, but decided to finish it, happy I did.

Wasn't that the remake of Abre los Ojos? Been a long time, but I seem to recall that being superior.

well the remake is actually nearly the same. very little was changed such as the setting where the main character lives. even Cruz plays her same role in the remake. the biggest difference is only in the ending which in the remake leaves it more to the persons imagination.

People always say the original is better even when it's not true though.
there is always a 50/50 chance with that. some movies cannot be remade because well..they come from a different era. a good example is RED DAWN, this was made with the idea of the Cuban/Russian invasion in 1980s (when an invasion could actually be done). the remake is a N.Korean invasion with a hint of Russian help, in modern times, which is now nearly impossible. you would need the entire N.Korean population to do such a feat. I enjoyed the movie for what it was but some things don't work by changing ab to cd.

Dredd remake was great because it is really all about how much you can achieve with what you got. Since this is a comic based in the future. Plus at the time there were still some fears of how graphic you could go. Both are good films, but I'd say the new Dredd captures the true form of the comic world.

Just my pov and sorry for the lengthy post.

I wouldn't even consider Dredd a "remake"

"Remakes" keep the same story, with changes here and there. Dredd is the character in a different story all together. The term "reboot" I guess works better.

It's like saying Amazing Spider-Man is a remake of Spider-Man, which would be closer to true in that case. I still see that as rebooting or restarting the franchise.

Whereas the new Total Recall and Robocop movies are remakes.

Remakes are usually better 2 out of 10 times. Most of the time they don't improve anything, the acting is usually worse, and for some movies they just feel unnecessary;with one of the best examples being the 1998 Psycho remake starring Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates.

I'd agree that particular remake was pointless since it was pretty much the exact same movie but with an incredibly miscast Vince Vaughn but there are other remakes out there that I can see the point to.

even when the original is better though people act like the remake is garbage just because its a remake.

I could see that happening with the Robocop remake even though it doesn't look that bad,I can't see it being better than the original, but it can't be as bad as Robocop 3 or the Prime Directives mini-series.

I think Robocop looks to be good.

People started complaining about it from the day it was announced though. It's a reboot, not a remake. People should accept it's not going to be the same and it's better it's not. If it was, then what's the point?

In the case of Robocop, the intentions seem different for the new one compared to the old one. In the new one it looks like it's going to focus on murphy and the affects it has on his family and be a bit superhero like, while in the original verhoeven had more of a social commentary/parody thing going on.

Remakes are just hit or miss.

In general, I'm not a huge fan as I'd rather see the money and talent go to telling a new story than retelling one that's already been told.  Especially if the original was well done.

Reboots I'm ok with as there's only so many times you can make sequels with the same actors etc., and they tend to involve more changes to the story vs. a remake.
