The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Gen. Discussion & Info
Damn it, I hope I can still do the money cheat.
Rumor is that a duping method exists. I do not know it.

errr duping still works apparently.... I thought they were getting rid of it
load times seem the same, menu doesnt lag as much as it used to so far.

The game seems to be a lot smoother when walking around (atleast me and a few of my friends think so when we were playing it yesterday). It rarely says "Loading area" now and it's barely noticeable when it does. I definitely like this update.

Too much duping apparenty screws up your saves.

I have a level 50 character (don't play it much) that I duped so much that I can't get into anvil castle w/out crashing, so make sure if your doing to dupe, its to get cash to buy things. (Extra lock picks early on, healing and mana potions, etc.)

when can you change/adjust the looks of your character? Does it pop up on screen or is it an option in the pause menu? I think I remember reading that you have to do it before you leave the sewers

I just passed the part where the emporer dies
before you leave the sewers it will ask you a final time if you are happy with your looks, race, job title, etc. That is the last time you can change it.
is there a limit to how much shit I can carry?
Yes it'sa weight issue. You'll see everything has a certain weight to it. If your a Nord or a Warrior you can carry a ton of stuff. At your equipment screen you can see how much total weight you can carry near the bottom of the screen. It will look like xxx/xxx.

Ok, I think ill get rid of all the rat meat I picked up in the sewers. Or do I have a use for it?

Also how serious is this game? Like to I have to do everything properly (eating, sleeping)? Or can I casually play it? (I hope you understand what Im trying to say)

You don't have to eat and you only have to sleep to level up, that's it.

Dude, this is all stuff you find out in the game. In my experience, it's a lot more fun actually playing and discovering things than asking about them on a forum. It's probably all in the instruction book, too, or on a FAQ.

Uh oh, I've duped a lot of Varla Stones and Strong Potions of Healing.

That wouldn't totally do it, I had dupe hundreds of arrows, potions, Varla Stones, Ingredients, Lockpicks, and more in the hundreds.

After the patch, I went back to the well in Cheydinnal to complete that Mage's guild quest, and there's still no body in the well for me... Map arrow still turns green, but no luck on the mage's guild for me. Maybe the fix is just for people who haven't accepted that quest yet...

rented this last week. Fun game ill probally pick this up for cheap just like i did for morrowind (picked it up 3 years after release for $5).
In the mainquest im a the point wherre you need the daedric artifact. And theres no little map pointer to give me any clue what to do. Anyone know where i can get the artifact?

I duped a lot of Sigil stones and those made my game slow to like seriously 5 fps until I had picked up about 20 of them. Now that all my duped shit is in barrels and chests and desks it's not a problem.

You just need to do a Daedric quest to get a Daedric artifact. There's about 20 different Daedric Shrines throughout Cyrodiil and any will do. Complete the quest and you get a Daedric artifact. I would suggest NOT giving Martin the Skeleton Key though as it will definitely come in handy for the rest of the game (it's basically an unbreakable lockpick). You can find their locations in either the Oblivion guide or probably some online FAQ/Walkthrough.

thanks to both of you guys for the help... but it says the link was blocked since i was referred directly there or something but i get what you meant and found the faq thanks guys. Ill try it out once my game crazed family will share the 360 .

Just wanted to say I'm about 135 hours in now, at level 34. I'm as in love with the game now as I've ever been. I finished the Arena quest, I'm about halfway through both Fighter's Guild and Mage's Guild (post-University) storylines, a little further than that in Dark Brotherhood, pretty early in Thieves, and not all that far into the main quest (won't spoil anything).

I've pretty much spanned the entire map, though I am missing one of the nine wayshrines. I spend a lot of time just wandering around, finding new locations. I've shut 10 Oblivion gates; I wonder what happens when you take out 16 (the number of princes load screens mention) -- though I have about 25 showing on my map.

Here are a few hints for less experienced players:

- Get your armorer skill to 50 ASAP, so you can repair enchanted items on your own. I used a smith/shopkeeper in Chorrol to train high.

- Between leveling up, make sure to advance some magic. One good one is getting Bound Dagger or similar, then activating it, unequipping, and activating it again. The Captivate or Shield Other spells are good, too, as you can use them on normal townspeople. I also like casting Open spells on any nearby door/chest/box to build up that magic school.

- If you want to build up your sneak, get close to someone who's sleeping and sneak near them. I think you have to be moving a little for it to register, but I got my sneak maxed out with the quickness.

finished the main quest today. Rental is due 2 days or so. I was orginally planning on buying this after the rental but now that ive finished a chunk of the guilds and the main quest i think ill either wait till this is below $20 or pick up a new 360 game this fall.
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/11/next-oblivion-download-available-thursday/

and the curse of Wombat's broken 360 continues....
The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion downloads just keep comin'. The next one will hit this Thursday for PC and Xbox 360 owners -- this time for the low low price of $1.89. What a bargain! Called "The Vile Lair," here's what you get for your dollar and change:
 • A multilevel lair for murderous players to find refuge
 • The Font of Renewal, where a player may purge himself of Vampirism
 • The Shrine of Sithis where the infamous player may heal and be cured of disease
 • A Dark Minion, who the player may employ to find gold in a most unseemly manner
 • A 'cattle pen' for vampires to dine
 • An indoor garden of venomous plants, including the notorious Chokeberry to feed to your enemy
 • Various furnishing upgrades, including a study room and storage area

Damn. Not sure If I'd get this one. I never turned Vampire or had the desire to do so.

On another note: How do you use potions or foods on enemies? Not talking about poison apples either.

Its prolly worth it since if you ever get bitten I heard it takes alot of time to get vampirism cured.

The only thing I've been able to do is add a potion to arrows. The game shows you this if you hop into the guy's painting in Cheydinhal. Honestly, though, I haven't tried it since. I just never use potions or scrolls during combat -- save for Restore Health or Magicka.

I'll get that for sure! I want to cure my vampirism, but it is way to much work. I may get back into this game no that I can cure it for $2.
Who would want to cure Vampirism? It's so fun being one.
it ruined the game for me. I can't even go outside anymore.
Are there any benefits to Vampirism?
The GOOD:
To begin with, as soon as you become a vampire, you gain a 100% percent resistance to Disease and Paralysis. In addition, you'll gain bonuses to a host of different skills and attributes. Each of these gets a bonus of five points per day that you go without feeding, up to a maximum of four days. So the first day you're a vampire, you'll gain +5 to all of the following attributes and skills. On the second day, they'll all be +10, and so on, up to the fourth day, when they all gain +20.
Here's a list of the affected skills and attributes.
 • Strength
 • Willpower
 • Speed
 • Acrobatics
 • Athletics
 • Destruction
 • Hand-To-Hand
 • Illusion
 • Mysticism
 • Sneak
 • Protection from Normal Weapons
Suffice to say, whether you're a warrior, a wizard, or a thief, you're going to find that these bonuses are general enough to be useful to your class. By the fourth day without feeding, your character will be significantly more powerful than he or she was before.

The Bad:
With that said, though, there are plenty of drawbacks to being a vampire. As soon as you become a vampire, you'll obtain a small but noticeable weakness to fire damage, which grows more severe as you proceed without feeding. By the fourth day, this vulnerability maxes out at 50%.
On the first day of your vampirism, you and your pale skin won't necessarily feel any ill effects from sunlight, apart from making some itchy flaking. On the second day, though, one point of damage per second of exposure will be meted out. This increases to four damage a second on the third day, and eight damage a second on the fourth. (For the game's purposes, "day" is considered to be any time between six AM and eight PM.) This constant damage prevents you from waiting while outdoors or using fast travel. (If you attempt to wait while outdoors so that you wind up waiting through some sunlight hours, don't be surprised if you end your wait period and instantly die.) Overcast skies or rain will reduce this damage somewhat, but you'll still usually find yourself making a mad dash for an indoor area to wait out the sunlight. (Luckily, your enhanced speed will make this easier for you.)
On the fourth day of vampirism, your appearance will have changed enough to make your affliction clear to the rest of the world. While you won't be attacked outright or assaulted by guards, most of the characters in the game will simply refuse to speak to you, or at best tell you to get the hell away from them. You can overcome this once per day with your Vampire's Seduction power, or perhaps with other charm spells if you happen to have some Illusion abilities.
Good job.. how about a post in your own words this time?
What for, if its already written perfectly why bother....how about you

fuck, I just spent all this time curing my fucking Vampirism. Oh well, I guess it wasn't that bad. I used the Mage's stupid chest to dupe all the ingredients. One thing I'm still not clear on with the Vampirism. Does feeding weaken the abilities you've been given? For instance, if I'm a 4th day Vampire with +20 on all that shit, if I feed do I lose some of that +20? I never really paid attention to how that worked when I was a Vampire.

If you can feed and still be +20 that shit would be awesome. You can still go out in the daylight and get a huge stat boost. Not to mention running around and biting all the hobos is fun as hell.

Feeding suppresses your powers, but allows you to go out into the daylight. If you don't feed you become a true vampie and have the full bonuses, but you can't go out into the daylight.

Damn. I guess it would make it too easy if you could feed and keep your powers. Having to wait all the time until night to travel was too much a pain in the ass last time.

Dude, please tell me you beat the arena in less than 100 hrs. I blew through it in the first 10-15 hrs without even knowing how to level up (I finished up the quest at lv6). My avatar's a Brenton "pokemon master" (as I call him - he's a conjuer), with a heavy reliance on healing & magic. All of my leveling revolves around casting spells.

Thanks for the sneakingf tip, gotta try that one.

I beat Arena around the 130 hour mark. I dabbled in it around hour 60, but it wasn't worth the cost/time of having to go get my armor repaired. That, and I wasted some charged weapons that were costly to recharge. I came back after getting my Armorer up past 50 and had zero difficulty. Though, keep in mind the game's difficulty evolves with you, so the guys a level 4 dude faces are much easier than a level 34.

Another level-up thing I've discovered is blocking. Find a mud crab on the shores and just keep blocking it. You'll level up really quickly.

Also, I could be wrong, but I think water walking progresses your athletics more than anything else. That's not saying much, but I got a ring that lets me water walk, and was surprised how quickly I leveled up.

Still havent bought this one.. I have the previous three I bought Arena about a year after it came out. Then bought Daggerfall on release and same with morrowind.

I dont want to get hooked until this winter.

On the subject of the Arena, once you get to a certain level and you only fight can fight Minotour Lords, fight three of them, then run back to the hallway and they usually get stuck and won't be able to hit you. So just summon something (I use a Daedroth) or range attack them. All three drop an 800 gold hammer and have 50 gold horns. Then after the arena pay, you can make around 3500

Not sure if its been mentioned, but you can just run around town and keep summoning a skeleton and level up conjuration. Got up to 100 quickly with this.

I usually don't pick up anything without a value of 100 gold/pound unless I'll use it. Minotaur horns are worth 50 for 5 pounds, so I don't touch 'em. I imagine the hammers are uber-heavy, too. Even with Pack Mule cast at all times (feather 145) and boots that give me perma-105 feather boost, I'm usually only 200 pounds or so from maxing out, so I have to be careful what I pick up. I have about 100,000 in cash right now, and my assets are worth a ton more, so it's not like I'm wanting for money.

It seems merchants have no more than 1200 gold with which to buy stuff, yet some items are worth upwards of 10x more (12,000). How do you get around this? I've read on load screens that shopkeepers have more money for Experts of Mercantile. Anyone know how much more, or if there's someone in Cyradiil that carries more cash on 'em for bartering?

where's my horse? I was exploring imperial city and now I want to do a quest but I cant find my horse. Also where is the guy that gives me more info for the mages guild?

Your horse should be at the stables of whatever city youre in, it follows you when you quick travel It stays at the door you entered through or at the stables. The town where the mage is I forget since I dont play often but it should be in the first city right next to where you had to find that one guy to give the amulet to.

I lost Shadowmere a while ago and haven't been able to find her - bitch is gone. I also rode the unicorn but that bitch also left me. Horse whores.
