The "Kamille stole Char's kick!" anime thread
My Haruhi vol. 2 just shipped. A few days earlier than expected.
Ack! I need to get that too. The LE version of course. :)
so you won't have stuff like aliens from space stealing the Earth's mana flow in order to kill humanity and the chick with huge tits who needs to stop them :)
 Quotable.
A Japanese doctor living in Germany gets framed for some murders and is on the run as a fugitive while he pieces the real story together and tries to catch the real killer. Along the way he uncovers some crazy shit involving government experiments on children. I can't really say much more than that. There are a bunch of different characters who get their own arcs, which is always completely related to the story or the other characters involved. of course, it becomes a crazy, tangled-web of a mystery, but not hard to follow.

I think what sets it apart from other anime is that the story is told in a very direct way and is genuinely interesting and suspenseful on its own merits-- so you won't have stuff like aliens from space stealing the Earth's mana flow in order to kill humanity and the chick with huge tits who needs to stop them :)
And this is just a brief list of its shortcomings. There's a lot of other problems with it, too.

Oh shi--- it's a coherent plot line not based on themes surrounding adolescence and coming of age stories, abandon ship! :p
Surprising since they just came out with a special edition DVD in Feb.
25th anniversary and all.

Good movie though I wouldn't classify it as anime.
Well I guess if its not anime, the first anime I saw was Techno Man, it came on at like.. 6am Saturday mornings when I was 7 or so. Again, I've never seen that anywhere since way back when..

Wow I just looked it up on wiki, apparently I was 5 when I saw this.

I figured since I went crazy( by my standards. certainly not some of you guys' standards :p Only 2 10 dvd orders for me) on the rightstuf sale and am starting to get back into anime, I might stop by this thread and see what the current shows are all about.
I'm currently trying to track down all the giant robot shows for kids from the 70s to present. I don't go for the drama and emo angst of stuff like evangelion. I'm all about the mindless no plot action of multicolored robots that join together to repel the latest attack from space. The 70s,80s,90s Sunrise series' being my favorites.

I was a wee youngin when I saw my first anime, it was Battle of the Planets. It's really the first cartoon I can remember watching regularly and I think may have tainted my opinion of american cartoons to an extent. I never thought that american animation was as detailed, action packed, and serious as BotP.
Looking back now, I wonder what the hell I was thinking. :p It looks so primitive and simple to my eyes now:p I've been meaning to track down the gatchaman JP version to see how different it is.

If anyone is interested, theres a ton of incredibly cool collections on youtube. Search for "robot anime op history" and you can find every series' opening from like the 60s on up, by production date.

Knowing my likes and dislikes, if anyone has any recommendations to throw at me of current stuff I would be most grateful. No giant boobed girls, harems, or angsty teens/adults, pls :p Kids saving the world with giant swords or driving giant robots is where its at!

Although I haven't watched it yet, I got Mao-Chan from the Rightstuf sale and that sounds like it might be something you are interested in.

It stars three eight-year-old girls, Mao, Misora and Sylvia, as they try to defend the earth against invading aliens. The world's defense has fallen to unlikely straits because the aliens are excessively cute, of which combat engagements are televised: if the forces battling the aliens were not cute themselves, the general public would revolt, as it would be seen as "bullying". Consequently, three military leaders chose their granddaughters to be the defenders, fittingly, becoming a team even cuter than the aliens. They each have a clover-shaped badge that enables them to transform. (This transformation provides no apparent special ability.)

WOW that is totally wierd!! I was soooo close to getting that cause it did look really good from the 1st episode I saw on youtube. The trouble was, I couldnt find anything else I was interested in to crank it up to 10 dvds so I ended up passing on it sadly. Anything else you might rec? You got me pegged I think ;P
Man, I loved me some Gantz, until the last like 5 minutes. Seriously, what the hell is that. Why be so vague?
because the whole show was just a vehicle for insane violence (with some nice tits thrown in for good measure), set up in a round-about way to make you think something is really there.

I'll admit it was entertaining...though the guy who wanted to save everyone bothered the hell out of me. He was kind of like Vash the Stampede but without the redeeming qualities of bad-assedness and humor

Attn Japan: morals are better emphasized in single, powerful moments, not every five minutes.
The whole thing sounds like it might be weird, yet fun to watch.
Monster is pretty down to Earth, though it definitely has it's slightly out of the ordinary things going on. When it comes down to it, if you're a fan of suspenseful mysteries, you'll like it.

Let me simplify this a bit... If you're a fan of good anime, you'll like Monster. It's a universal good. If you don't like Monster, there's definitely something very wrong with you.

So what anime is on the AZN network and sci-channel right now? I've seen animation runner kumoni on azn and ghost in the shell on sci-fi, is there more?

I saw Urusei Yatsura once. One of the movies.

BTW people, check this out this Big O/Men in Black mash-up because it is cool. :)

I am going to Animenext tomorrow in Secaucus, a good old anime convetion. Should be a blast, honestly this past year I haven't watched as much anime as I used to, hopefully this con will get me moving again.

Sounds cool. I've never been to one.
I don't go to them much anymore. Ever since I realized I hate anime fans...
I almost didn't recognize you with the new avatar.

I only had one friend who was into anime in school. It's popularity wasn't as big as it is now. He introduced me to Record of Lodoss War. Fun show. Why do you hate anime fans? Is it just how "super fans" get worked up aout the tiniest things? I am a Star Trek fan also so I know how that is.

I change my avatars frequently lol.

I'm going to get flamed for this, but here goes. They annoy because they're ruining anime. All I see nowadays is crap like Naruto, One Piece, etc. That seems to be all people want nowadays. Even my beloved Gundam has been tainted with the likes of Gundam Seed. Not to mention I hate how most anime fans nowadays feel anime is some sort of right owed to them. So yeah, I tend to avoid other anime fans most of the time. Mainly because any show I mention will be met with a blank stare, and any show they mention will be met with disgust from me. This is probably the only place I discuss anime outside of one or two friends.

It's hard when people only like a few shows. CAG was probably the first place I started discussing anime regularly. I like some of the popular shows like Naruto or Bleach, but there is just so much creativity and variety that people don't give a chance or don't know about. So many CAGs have made recommendations that I ended up loving. I have a pretty open mind when it comes to anime (I love animation in general, with anime and DCAU being my favorite things to watch). The main thing I like about anime is that most series are 13 or 26 episodes so it is reasonable to own several shows and watch them in a small amount of time.

I tend to stay away from longer shows with more than 100 episodes (Ranma being the only exception at the moment because I love it so much). I enjoyed the first parts of One Piece but it just got too weird for me. Inuyasha's "ending" was one of the biggest disappointments I can recall in a long time, and it seemed like all the time invested in watching the show was a waste. I liked the characters, and the premise was interesting but it just seemed to lack direction. I did pick up some uncut DBZ from Big Lots though because I always wanted to see it uncut.
I don't go to them much anymore. Ever since I realized I hate anime fans...
Yup. I went to three total and then swore them off. The people there are too extreme.
I like anime and all, but I can keep it under fucking control, unlike them. You will never see me spouting off random, unintelligible bits of Japanese or fawning over characters as though they were real.
I'm all for discussion and such, but only if it's intelligent.

Unrelated: does anyone know if Gonzo ever intends to release Gankutsuou in HD format? It's among my favorite animes, both in story and art (if you've seen it, you'll know why I want it in HD :)).

Wow. I fell behind on the Bleach manga, but hot DAMN does Grimmjow's released form look awesome. I need to keep up with reading the manga again.

One of my favorites as well. I also would love to have that show in HD. Hell, if not the whole show just the concert sequence with Eugenie. I was in awe during that whole segment. That show is just plain gorgeous.

I was wondering what the general opinion of Witch Hunter Robin was. I watched about half the series, then forgot about it, and I was wondering if it was worth finishing. It seemed a bit boring, imo, but I'm guessing that all the action is in the last half.

I don't like anime fans because I've never seen one outside of my friends that looks like a legitimate person. They're always really... weird looking. These people also spend too much time in the "late night" section of DVD stores.

Maybe you don't know one because some of the "legitimate people" you walk by happen to be anime fans. ;)

It's pretty much all boring, even when the big stuff goes down towards the end. It's all just uninteresting.

GaoGaiGar is fun. I need to start watching the rest of it sometime soon, but its full of hotblooded awesome.

About cons, I went to Anime Boston twice. The first time I was kinda excited, bought a bunch of stuff and felt very much satisfied. The next year (last year) I just went to buy stuff, and realized it wasn't such a good idea. It was essentially paying money for the ability to pay more money to buy stuff. Most of the events didn't really interest me, and yeah, anime fans do suck. I didn't go to the one this year, and I don't think I'm going to next year's, unless I turn off my brain or something.

For me, if you want to dress up like something in an animation, you're too into it. With exception, however, but that's very small.

As for dressing up, I always wanted to go to a con dressed like Chouji, but that's because we're both chunky. Gots to represent, ya know?

ANyone goin to animenext this weekend?

Edit: I notice Nirvanaguy is going.

I'll be the guy dressed as Rude from FF7 on Saturday.

Basically a guy in a suit with a bald cap :p

Other good news from ANN:
Viz's final anime release of 2007 will be Death Note. Volume one will be released on November 20, and further volumes will follow each month. Both a standard DVD-only edition and a collector's special box will be available. The collector's box will include a limited-edition Ryuk figure, which will also be offered for stand-alone purchase via the Viz website. Viz is hoping to also have Death Note air on Adult Swim, but no specific details of any arrangement have been confirmed yet.
I'd love to see the show on Adult Swim. I think it'd be a perfect fit.
At the One Piece panel, hosted jointly by Toei Animation and FUNimation Entertainment, Mike McFarland, the voice director of Funimation's dub of the series confirmed the new cast for the upcoming Cartoon Network broadcast of the third season of One Piece. The new voices are:

Luffy: Colleen Clinkenbeard
Nami: Luci Christian
Zorro: Chris Sabat
Usopp: Sonny Strait
Sanji: Eric Vale
Chopper: Brina Palencia
Robin: Stephanie Young

He also mentioned that the DVD box sets of the series that will be released starting next year will keep the original spellings of all of the characters' names. The eighth One Piece movie, Episode of Alabaster will be released sometime in 2008 as well. Unfortunately, while Funimation had hoped to release the first two seasons of the series, Viz still holds the rights to those episodes.
Seems like a fairly good cast, though that bold portion is sad to hear. I hope it's not like what's happened to Dragon Ball's first volume.

To my surprise, my Beck Starter Set shipped today, so I hope I get it by Monday or Tuesday. :D

Yeah, what was I thinking? Of course, this is, like, the billionth time anime has been ruined now...
Awww, did I hurt your feelings? I'm sorry.
It's just really funny when people go "bloo bloo bloo, shonen is ruining anime" when they owe whatever underground vanity book they say they like to stroke their e-peen to DBZ expanding the market. I'm sure those two people who can stand your hipster posing appreciate it.

Hahahaha! That's great.
At least Grimmy is supposed to be a cat.
Although that is entirely the look that released Grimmy had.

I went and got Black Lagoon LE from Best Buy today. I forgot to order it during the 4th of July sale at Rightstuf. I was going to get LE Vol 2 of Haruhi too, but each one they had was damaged, so I'll just wait until Rightstuf has a sale on it I guess.

Also, I got the Ergo Proxy DVD/CD set for $14.99 at Best Buy so if anyone is interested you might want to check that out. YMMV.

Hey, does anyone know of any place that sells plastic slip covers to go over metal DVD cases? The Black Lagoon metal case is nice, but it would be cool if there was a clear slip cover to put over it like with the Halo 2 LE metal case, Doom CE metal case and Perfect Dark Zero CE metal case.

Mm.... Deepdiscount.com's retail store did something right! We got Eureka Seven Vol. 8 in and it's on the shelf... well, till we pull it tomorrow. Good thing I bought it.

I have to say, as surprising as this may sound, having played the English PS2 One Piece games has sort of warmed me up to the series more. I went out and found out my local library had the manga volumes so I've been reading through the first five volumes (already on volume 5). I can't wait till I get past the "Get the crew together after fighting wannabe pirate crew" arcs are done. Although I'm enjoying Kuro more than the Buggy or Morgan. I'm considering starting to download the show from the point after Arlong or maybe even watching that arc. But I'm definitely enjoying it a LOT more than I used to.
