The New, But Not Improved Firmware Thread: 4.00 Currently Available

Finished up with the download and install.

They show your trophy level on the player card next to your quote on your friends list so you don't need to click on each person's name to see what they are.

You have to own the game to be able to rate it in the store. It seems to update in real-time, too. They have the PlayStation Plus part of the store already open, so you can subscribe already if you want to do it right now.

The new photo gallery and video editors need a download to use them.
probably the usual.......

1. damn sony and their adding more shit i dont want or need.

2. damn you again sony for making me have to dl this dl to continue to play online just so you can force us to dl shit for your new pay service i dont want and hate.

3. why cant you put bc in a download for once since i know you all can do it but nooooooooooo you want us to buy ps2 games on psn for overly inflated prices.

4. my brazillian internet hates you sony and i do too :bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb::bomb:

he talks about sony the way youd assume luke skywalker talked about darth vader once he found it he was his dad lol.
Actually I like the reliability of the PS3(minus all of the YLOD threads as of late), but I hate all the junk they put in the updates. All I keep asking for on the PS Blog is give me the minimum bug/glitch fixes and they can shove the fluff crap up their ass.:D Is that so fuckin' hard for them to do? If they stopped listening to the 12 year olds on the blog whining for 'omg cross game chat' and 'blah blah blah' and 'yadda yadda yadda' the PS3 would be a hell of a GAME machine.

But thanks for saving me time on writing up my typical rant, lokizz. I'll just use your version of my rant.;)
Mandatory.
Of course. When it's some optional update, I usually force the PS3 to update since I know Sony is gonna make the shit mandatory anyway later on(ie the one to remove Linux from the fat model PS3s).

The first one is a very welcome addition. The second one is an improvement over XBLM's system of 'if you see it, you can rate it, even if you don't have it'.

Yah I don't get why Microsoft would let people rate games they dont have. Sometimes games will have crazy ratings even before they're released because the page for the game is already up. Hopefully the ratings stay accurate with PS+, nothing like seeing a game rated 4-5 stars and having it turn out to be complete shit. I usually try to find a review of the game first, but you don't always have that luxury with the arcade/indie games.

Anyone who has a problem installing, please let us know. I like to wait and see before updating.

Thank you.

Finished updating with no problems. Uploading photos on Facebook and editing/uploading videos on YouTube is nice, but still not gaming related features.

Edit: Finished using the video editing software. It sucks and it is worse than Windows Movie Maker. Don't use it unless you want to upload videos on YouTube.

Sounds like a bunch of useless crap except for game ratings. Like there aren't already a million photo editing applications for PCs.

To be fair, just because someone doesn't own a game doesn't necessarily mean they haven't played it, and therefore have insight enough to express their opinion of it through the ratings screen.

i did the install last night and during the second phase of installation it got up to 66% and my system cut off. i thought it was ylod again but the ps3 cut back on and everything was cool so i dont know what to make of that.

Why would you pay just to vote something 5 stars, though? Which XBL's system, I can vote 1 or 5 for anything I see, regardless of purchase, viewing, or playtime. With this, you're at least getting a better consensus than 'OMG, tiz AWESAUCE!' for everything.

That's why you wait till it's on sale and has been played by a shitload of people. Then again with the PSN stuff you can't wait in some cases, as some of the content gets pulled and is only available to those who already downloaded it before.

But most of it's overpriced in the first place(anything over $5 for a downloadable game is a ripoff to me), so I rarely buy any of the shit.

Can you give me some examples please, thanks.

Awww cmon. You mean I can't just go onto the PSN rating system and intentionally rate everything a 1 star just to pull down the rating in general like I do on the PSN Blog suggestion pages with 70% of the 'gimme gimme gimme' requests.

Cheapest you may have missed my question, but can you tell me what games were removed from PSN? You thought it was worth mentioning so surely there must be a significant number. Thanks again.
(anything over $5 for a downloadable game is a ripoff to me), so I rarely buy any of the shit.
 That seems like a gross overgeneralization. I prefer having a physical disc as much as the next guy. (actually more than most these days) However, there have been some downloadable games this generation that are worth well over $5. For example, Shadow Complex could easily have been a $40 full disc release.
I know someone mentioned a few that were removed, but it was nothing that I cared about. But I believe it was one(or two or three) of the Midway ones.
If it's the Midway ones then that was on the 360. I can't recall any games being delisted on PSN to be honest. A Sony exec even criticized MS for delisting games (which has happened on numerous occasions).

Well then release a disc version and charge accordingly, but for me anything over $5 for something I can't resell if I get bored with it is way too much.

some of the miday games were temporarily removed from psn but theyre on there now in the plus section. still not worth what they want for them imo.

Strange. I know that on the first download portion, it never gets to 100% before it does a reboot. But I do know mine beeped and then rebooted twice.

Anyway, thank goodness everything is fine :)

Also, I really like the new face book stuff and the new facebook app.

Ars has an article about the PSN+ and the new Hulu subscription model:

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/...tm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss

At Technologizer, a writer found a chunk of code in one of Hulu's Web pages that clearly states a PlayStation Plus subscription is required to access the content on your PlayStation 3. A Kotaku reader also sent in an image he captured when using a preview code for the service that clearly states a PlayStation Plus subscription is required.

Not firmware related, but it is relevant to much of the current conversation stemming from the last update.

now that is a useless update. why not add vidoes and stills of the games so that way you can see what its all about nobody needs or wants suggestions. bad enough they added another store link because the other was so hard to find but this is i have to say is really stupid.

3.41 is up for download now. With my new internet, it took about a minute to download. Insane. Installing it on the other hand takes as long as usual.

EDIT: Hey, I can change the Icon size in the store now.

LOL As usual, my comment on the PS Blog about how totally fuckin' useless this shit is doesn't even show up after I make it.

Lovely.

Changing store icon sizes=useless
Recommending me more overpriced shit to pay to download that I have no use for since I have no resell rights to it=useless
Whatever else is in this stupid fuckin' update, unless they snuck in software BC for free=useless

You could always change the Icons sizes. :D

LOL Sony still loves me. Not a single comment of mine on their stupid blog(none of which have been R rated)has shown up and I've attempted 3 thus far. Yet the same 12 year olds whining for 'omg gimme gimme gimme cross game chat' who whine during every update for it have posted, re-posted and re-re-posted the same silly shit.

God, I love Sony. Censor anyone who isn't a whiny lil brat and actually wants to just use their GAME machine for GAMES while shoving all the stupid fluff.

So you get your panties in a bunch b/c they sensor your whiny ass? If it was up to me you wouldn't even be allowed on the damn internet.

I would ship him off to Afghanistan to see what real life is like, so he can realize how idiotic his rants about a firmware update that take a few minutes out of his life is so asinine. Guy is 100% demented when it comes to the realities of this world and what his priorities should be.

At least it isn't as bad as people who make empty threats about others on the internet because they disagree with something that is said on a message board. THOSE people have truly, truly lost touch with reality. MIRITE?!1

I hate to tell you this, but there are large contingents of us in our 30s or 40s that want persistent chat because we don't want to be in general game chat with whiny 12 year olds. It is about the games. If you've ever tried Live and have any friends (both look doubtful), you would know how useful persistent chat is for setting up impromptu games with your friends. If you are content to play online with strangers, then it isn't really a feature for you but that does not mean it has no value. My understanding from talking with those in the industry is that Sony really wants to make it happen, but that the non-centralized nature of their online service makes it very technically difficult and they are having difficulty making it work without breaking many older titles. (If you remember, at launch the PS3 didn't even allocate enough memory to pull up the dashboard during games.)

Additionally, in my circle of friends specific case, we talk about things (ongoing cases, our families, our wives, etc.) during the game that we either don't want or legally can't discuss out it general chat. While it is true that we could talk on the phone about such items, we're working professionals with limited spare time. My game time is my only time away from work and family duties. The ability to catch up with other old law school classmates who are now scattered across the country while still getting our rec time is very, very helpful to us. While Sony definitely doesn't have any duty to add XGC, I know for a fact that just in my circle of friends it would sell 4 more consoles to guys who just use play on Live now. (The other 3 of us already have both.)

As far as your comments not showing up, I can understand it is your posting style is similar to here. I actually often agree with many of your points. [Sony does have many near worthless firmware updates, the update servers have been historically slow (although this seems to be getting better), and the update process used to fail too often] However, your posting style comes off as abrasive and extremely repetitive, so it really wouldn't surprise to find you had been moved to into the "blocked" or "silenced" category on the PSN blog.

i gotta see XBL in action one day because I still don't get the x-game chat. Yeah sure if you have 3 friends in real life and you only play games with those three friends I can see it might be easier than setting up and using a chat room, but I have different friends, friends I play Fat Princess with friends i play LBP with, friends i play Burnout with, friends I play Singstar with. Aside from a few CAGs there's not a lot of overlap and, if you don't spend time talking about life just to talk, I don't need voice when I'm not in game. If we're playing Fat Princess and we wanna just talk about chatroulette we'll do that and I'm not gonna lie it would be nice to talk with the other team sometimes when we aren't being serious. What confuses me is how it works with strangers. Do you guys just set up your little chat circle and then just shut everyone else out? Does it still let you talk with your team and thus you subject your teammates to 'chatter about your day'? Either of which sounds like a downside.

ALl in all though I still gotta side on the other side of the fence and say X-game chat is a really really low priority feature.
you would know how useful persistent chat is for setting up impromptu games with your friends.
I'm not saying voice wouldn't be easier or better.. but for instance if my choices are paying $50 a year to ask freakyzeaky if he wants to get on Burnout or free and i have to send him a text message. The text message is perfectly ok.
it isn't really a feature for you but that does not mean it has no value
perfectly valid argument. and I agree. I iterate again that I see the feature DOES have value. I just don't think it has a lot of value to most of us.
So you get your panties in a bunch b/c they sensor your whiny ass? If it was up to me you wouldn't even be allowed on the damn internet.
Now why is that? Because you disagree with my views in general? It's called an opinion. We all have them and we won't always agree.

My priorities when I get on to play a game is to get on and play a game, not have to download some silly fuckin' update that adds nothing of value to me. Another store icon? Great. I don't even use the 20 billion I have now since everything is so fuckin' overpriced.
Cheapest is the biggest Sony Hater and Sony Fanboy I've ever known.
Fanboy of Sony? fuck no. Sony doubled their MSRP price from last gen due to wanting to shove the trojan horse of Blu-Ray down consumers throats and trying to make the PS3 an 'all in one' machine. They took it out of the realm of affordability for many people who had supported them and the PS2 last gen just to win some cockamamie 'HD format war'.

I will admit that I am happy for the size and space BR does afford for gaming, but was the gamble truly worth it to take themselves from first place last gen to third place thus far this gen in hardware sales? Thus far that gamble is proving to have paid off, though at what cost to their gaming portion of their business?

But to say that I'm both a hater of Sony and a fanboy of them in the same breath is a bit ludicrous. I am a fan of the GAMES for the console and not the console itself, although the reliability of the PS3 versus the 360 is very commendable YLOD problems notwithstanding.

I have one friend offline who has a PS3 and as of now he doesn't have internet at his house, but he lives close enough that I can just pop over and we can play a game or three there. As for online friends, if I see them on I'll send them a message to see if they want to play a game. If they don't respond or say no, then oh well.

As for not dealing with 12 yr olds in game the solution for me is simple. I make a private game and then I don't have to deal with anyone that I didn't invite to it.

But as to my 'abrasive' posting style, I've seen much worse comments on the PS Blog than mine and they're still on there days later. I guess it's because I didn't preface my comments with 'Sony R DA GREATEST' and then begin my real comment from there.

I bought my PS3 for games so whatever nonsense they do with the free network doesn't really effect my views as long as I can still play my games online.

I mean yeah it was overpriced when it came out but luckily no one should of been inclined to even think of getting one unless they wanted to play awesome games like Resistance, Genji Blade, Heavenly Sword and Lair. I actually hold the same views about the launch 360, because that was a god awful machine back then too.

But both of systems sold a lot in their first years off of hype alone (gotta buy that $600 system for your FF, Halo, and MGS -- 18 months before they release right?), so I can't really be mad at Sony and MS for pulling a fast one on impulsive consumers while I sat back and enjoyed epic, $15-20 PS2 games.

Now they are both fine systems IMO. The blu-ray in PS3 is nice, I even tried it out my first movie on it last month, PSN is free and the game library is a lot more solid right now. 360 is a great alternative PC and has some cool exlcusives as well, including online with cross chat features or whatever little thing people think $40-50/year is worth paying for.

But yeah, even as a pretty avid gamer I can't really find much to complain about on the hardware or network side. This gen I'm mostly just upset with developers banking on DLC and the new philosophy about making achievement-oriented games.

@Cheapest - You go crazy about having to install new Firmware updates, meaning you use your PS3 a lot and don't want to waste your valuable PS3 time installing an update. I just update it and go do other things, that's why they don't bother me. And you avidly talk on the PS3 forums and the PSBlog. But, you are constantly hating/bitching on all things PS3 even though you keep buying games on the console and discussing it.

Thus, PS3 Fanboy and avid PS3 hater. If you truly are a PS3 hater, then you would not be here discussing the console or you wouldn't even own it...

That is actually a good design.. though it is likely less because it's smart to make sure the user is cool with a firmware update, and more because they need to make sure you accept the modified EULA that goes along with the firmware every time

I wouldn't own it at all if the 360 had been better hardware wise, but since I waited a year or two to get into this gaming gen I got to see the rampant issues with the RROD and such and that made up my mind for me.

However, it does seem that some of the PS3 FW updates to come out have thrown a wrench in the works before and you have to really bemoan Sony for using the PS3 users as the guinea pigs for testing them.

As for continuing to buy games, aside from a streak recently where I bought new releases 3-4 months in a row, I only buy used games and only when they're at my buy price. I don't buy them new and support Sony or the devs since I want them CHEAP.

But as to the PS Blog thing I figured my voice on there would never be heard amidst all of the people crying for more free(and useless for me) features like cross game chat.

Wow. I think Sony finally fixed the slow downloading thing. I figured I'd turn on my PS3 to download this garbage, since this is about when I usually get on to play anyway and it's up to almost 80% within 5-10 minutes.

Congrats Sony, you finally fixed something right.

EDIT: Wow. It's done within 20 minutes. Amazing. Now if they'd just add something USEFUL to these updates it'd be even better.
