The New, But Not Improved Firmware Thread: 4.00 Currently Available
They call it a security patch, huh? What they should call it is 'we blocked something we didn't want used on our system'.

That's another thing that bugs me bout the firmware updates though is that they don't really mention what's in them. They bring up that big license agreement that you have to accept(or be locked out of PSN for not accepting:roll:), but I've never seen them list what item(s) are included in the firmware updates.

If they did an itemized list of what's in each one, the size of each file and allowed you to uncheck optional shit(ooooo sparkles), then that would quell some of my distaste for their shitware.

But giving me alot of stuff that should be optional is what still keeps me aggravated about their system. If I don't want another 4 icons cluttering up my XMB, it should be MY choice.
Basically and I'm with you on that one, it would be nice to have the option on some updates.

OK. Color me ignorant here, but when did Sony add a function called "Video Editor & Uploader"? It's under the video section of the XMB.

It's too bad it's not a program you could use while playing a game to capture video, as I probably would use a program like that when playing GTA or Red Dead Redemption to capture some of the more insane stuff I've seen happen in those games.

it's pretty recent.. i think it was late update actually. never bothered to try using it so i can't even tell if it'll chop my videos

3.40 is when they added it.

so i just updated my PS3 and thought the firmware wiped all my data, my bookmarks, my PSN ID, my trophies... then i remembered before I left I had my PS3 set to auto-login on my guest account. crisis of rage averted
3.5 is up 3d bluray functionality very slowly downloading
:bomb: Another fucking update.....already? And yet another useless fuckin' update for me since I don't plan on being bothered with 3-D anything.

Thanks Sony....for wasting my fuckin' time like usual.

Oh, shut up already. *feeds troll*

I came home, turned no the PS3. Saw a firmware update was required and went straight to this topic. Cheapest on schedule? YUP.

Maybe I'm mistaken but I think they added a default language and subtitle for any videos on your hard drive setting under Video options. They also moved the Calibrate Motion Controller to the top of the Accessory list.
Oh, shut up already. *feeds troll*
I'm just sick of this useless shit that I'll never use not being an OPTIONAL update and even when an update is listed as optional eventually they make it a mandatory update.

You know CAG has an ignore feature, right? You don't like my lil rants on this bullshit firmware garbage, then please use it and then you'll never have to see me rant on this or anything again.

LOL Awesome. Sony still has me blocked from commenting on the PS Blog for firmware. Apparently you have to like Sony's shitware and kiss their ass to be able to comment.

They've also added a report function to messages you receive from users over PSN. This actually is a needed feature.

This update screwed the text display in the browser. The text is now so thin it's hard to read. There's no change between Normal, Rounded, or Pop. As someone who depends on the PS3 for his web browsing (computer went boom), this is a problem.

A report function for messages? LOL I just noticed that added function. That kinda sucks for me since I tend to send messages with more than a few swear words in them to assholes who keep trying to kill me in free roam on GTA when I'm just off minding my own damned business.

Oh well. I guess I have to tone it down or risk them banning me, huh? But I'm willing to bet I can't report the jackholes treating free roam like deathmatch and coming after me just for doing that via the reporting, right?

That's what I've been doing as of late, though a few friends have sent me invites to public games where a good portion of the players cooperate with each other and kick out anyone who is an ass.

PlayMemories - Just a heads-up about the new photo thingie...when you 'import' your pictures it moves them instead of just copying them. Thankfully I had my stuff backed up but that's pretty sneaky sis.

Oh and it's slow as hell. So yeah, I deleted it right after.
I'm just sick of this useless shit that I'll never use not being an OPTIONAL update.
THIS!. Why on earth is this a mandatory update?
They've also added a report function to messages you receive from users over PSN. well i came to complain about the lack of optional but the moral of the story is I'd still rather spend 40 minutes downloading firmware i don't care about than spend $20 extra on features I'll never use.

Another lame ass update that brings us nothing. Hey SONY, 99.5% of your users don't own a HD-3D TV!!!! Duh!!???

Hmm, i had the same problem, the last update made all text look darker and in bold. Then after this update it went back to normal. I use my PS3 for web browsing, so i noticed right away.

Ok....I just updated and now I can't sign in to PSN. It says my ID or Password is incorrect, but it is not. Anyone else having problems signing in?

I haven't tried logging on, but I thought the reason for last night's store update was scheduled PSN downtime today.

Gotcha. I've been doing some connection tests and looks like you're right, PSN is down. I was getting worried there for a sec.

They should be doing some maintenance today. That's why the PSN store was updated last night.

Only feature I do like from new update is the Grief Report.

Not onboard with 3D and Move and all that, but if I wasn't CHEAPEST enough to open my wallet and spend, I'd be thrilled with the support I'm receiving from Sony. Kudos to them for being proactive when it comes to multimedia.

 If they really wanted to support PS3 owners, they'd make the warranty for ALL PS3's three years like many decent companies do with their electronics instead of the paltry one year garbage they give you.
Gotcha. I've been doing some connection tests and looks like you're right, PSN is down. I was getting worried there for a sec.
I also panicked for a sec. Then realized what was happening when I logged in here.

I really wish it would have said something like, "PSN is currently down due to scheduled maintenance." as opposed to telling me my ID/Password is incorrect making me think I was hacked or something.

I've found numerous posts saying the EU PSN is down for maintenance today, but nothing saying the NA PSN is down for the same reason.

EDIT: Nevermind. I found one on Joystiq now. It's gonna be a looooooong day without PSN, folks.
The PlayStation Network is getting its oil checked and tires rotated tomorrow, September 21, and will knock several features offline during that time. The regular maintenance is expected to run from 8AM-5PM Pacific (11AM-8PM Eastern; 4PM-2AM BST) and will prevent access to the PSN Store, Home, Account Management. Users "may encounter difficulty while signing in to PSN."

Due to the maintenance, Sony will have its regular PSN update today. Follow the PlayStation Twitter for updates tomorrow on when the network will return to normal operation.
I can't sign in either. Thanks Sony for the useless update, and making it so the one day this month I want to use my PS3, I can't.
LOL Apparently no one even paid attention to my post mentioning the maintenance, huh?
I think most people just assume your posts in here are bitching posts so they ignore them. ;)

Damn. I forgot about the update and saw the thread, got giddy for like half a second, then realized that I can't download it yet because my PS3 is on its way to Texas to get repaired. :(

It's a cruel world.

What I'd love to see Sony do with their firmware is give a grace period to download the update based on how important the changes are. Meaning, if the new firmware is released on Mon Sept 20th and the main update is 3D support (that 95% of people can't make use of anyway), PSN would allow us all to sign in to PSN and function for a grace period of a certain amount of days.

Maybe non-important updates don't force you to update for like 10 days...that gives you 10 days to plan for a good time to download it and not be bothered immediately. Maybe for very important updates that truly NEED to be updated by people before PSN would work, those don't have a grace period. Obviously the PSN doesn't know there is new firmware until it attempts to sign into PSN, so that same check could also trigger the grace period.

It just sucks to work all day, look forward to come home and play a game, and then be forced to spend 10-20 minutes to download and install an update with features I don't really need at that time anyway.

lovin' the new system update! Already grief reported one message i recieved 1 month ago which somene asked me if i can give 'em my email and password so they can download my games!
Firmware 3.50 FTW!!!!

i was thinking of a seasonal system. So for instance all updates are optional and 4 times a year all the updates to that point become mandatory.

But yet you didn't. ;):grouphug:

I'd still much rather if they gave us the ability to pick and choose what we want and what we don't we can uncheck. It would've been nice for those who actually do use the Other OS function to be able to keep it instead of having to follow what the idiots at Sony want you to do.

It may be their console that they created, but you paid money for it and you should be able to choose what you want and don't want without having to choose between playing on PSN or being blocked for wanting the full functionality of your console without alot of clutter.

That I can agree with.

as much as I wanted Other OS i kinda side with Sony to an extent on this. You can't have people picking and choosing updates all willy nilly. Eventually you reach a point where you have an update D (the ability to send a message with report a person) that is based on new features from update B (the ability to blanket report people).

Some updates SHOULD be mandatory.. eventually. But then even the meaning of mandatory is kinda skewed because I don't think blocking from PSN should happen unless PSN functionality has changed. So I'm not even sure what I mean when I say mandatory but whatever. But I will say that a truly optional update should be permantly optional. RemoveOtherOS update was 'optional' but when you can't do anything online it's no longer optional.

I'd also like to add, does the 360 allow you to go online without accepting updates? What about PSP? The answer is obviously no.

Where did this perception of being able to pick and choose what we want from a closed online system come from? Or is it just idiocy from those who think they deserve special treatment or likely have brain damage from being dropped on their head as a child. Could be either/or.

Windows update most likely.

Exactly. If I don't want something in a Windows update I just don't select it. Although now I have the updates set to automatically install, so usually they do so while I'm not at my PC. Here's the other thing that really bugs me about the updates on the PS3: you can't do jack shit until it's done downloading/installing.

I can still surf the internet or watch a YouTube video or whatever I want to do while the updates on my PC are downloading/installing. Moreover, if I choose not to download/install the update right that millisecond because it's not convenient for me I can still use my PC and I'm not locked out of it.

You can't say the same with the PS3. It's either you download that update or you're locked out of PSN until you do. Maybe I just popped on to check messages or check to see who's on my friends list, but if I want access to that I have to spend 20 fuckin' minutes downloading/installing some shitware that has nothing useful for me personally.
