Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
So how much do you guys plan on spending on Steam during the next sale? I'm going to set myself at a reasonable max of $50. For the holiday sale, my max is whatever's left over from the previous sale plus $75. :D
Seeing that I haven't played half of what I bought in the last year, my limit will be around $30, but we'll see ;)

$125

No more than $20 for collections (unless there is something that tempts me)
No more than $15 for a single game ($10 is my max for most unless something incredible hits $15).

Gonna actually aim for a $40 budget for the holiday sales on steam. There aren't many games I am looking for this time around so this actually might be doable.

I don't really have a total budget for Steam sales, if it's cheap enough I'll buy it. Overall the deals are so good, it really isn't that much money especially when compared to what I might spend on physical copies. My Steam library is pretty saturated anyways, I own most of what I want, and $20 is pretty much my max, $10 or so on most games.

I don't really have a budget either, but considering my huge backlog, I can't really justify spending more than $5 on a game. Mostly, I'm looking at the independant developers for little gems that don't require a huge time comittment but are enjoyable.

I think I might have spent $40 on the last sale.

I have a policy of trying very hard not to buy anything unless it's 75% off or more.

That is pretty much where I am at. If it doesn't hit less than $5 than I pretty much pass on anything (unless it is a pack or something) because there is no reason for my to spend more than $5 considering the size of my backlog.

I will still probably spend around 30 to 40 though just because there always seems to be something (or lots of somethings) random that becomes a "hell why not" purchase.
I have a policy of trying very hard not to buy anything unless it's 75% off or more.
That's the way I go in. I don't set a budget, exactly. I just try to stick to my 75%/under-$5 rule and hopefully keep myself from going crazy. Bundles and packs are what really get me, though. The cost per game (even if I don't want all of them) is too tempting.

Of course, what happens is I end up with games I don't remember buying. I was looking through my library last night and saw a bunch of games I bought in this past Halloween sale. I said "huh, I don't remember buying those." They were so cheap, I just grabbed them for the hell of it without even thinking. Steam is my Pokemon.

Same here, I look forward to these sales now for the scavenger hunts as it gives me a reason to play some of the games deep in my backlog.

Ill probably try to grab Fallout 3, ME2, and Dragon Age during the Thanksgiving sale. Most of them have been $10 on less during the last sales. If I could grab them for $5 a piece then that would be sweet to have. Especially Fallout 3 GOTY. Maybe Dungeon Defenders if its less than $7-8.

Im seriously looking to budget like $10 on this next sale. With the Blockbuster sale coming up and having most of the new releases I want, makes me have to slow down and watch what I spend my money on.

Keep dreaming for that Fallout 3 GOTY deal.

I also don't budget, but I run my purchases by my wife every time I'm ready to check out. This usually ends up becoming a bit of a business presentation where I play up the reasons I'm buying what's there at those prices, limiting what I buy to things I've looked into enough to talk about them, and occasionally adding what else I considered and decided against.

I don't really have to do all of this, but it does reduce my impulse purchases and works out better than her later seeing ten days' worth of charges and having to wonder how I managed to spend so much so many times. :whistle2:\"
Steam is my Pokemon.
Nice. :D

^ Man. I don't ask her how much she spends on shoes and handbags, and she don't ask me about how much I spend on games. >.>

But srsly, I budget to the extent that whatever cash I deposit into the checking account I use for online transactions, is what I spend for the sales. And if I really want something, it's a good excuse to hoof it 10 minutes to the ATM.

No budget for me but I'm fairly particular in what I buy and my tastes eschew a lot of higher priced AAA stuff. Even if something is $2 I still consider whether or not I'll actually play it for more than a couple of hours. I have way too many games that I've never given more than fifteen minutes so it's a way to discipline myself so I don't just buy things for the sake of a deal.

I just want to get any GFWL titles I am missing, like Fable 3 and Super SF4 Arcade Edition.

In non-GFWL territory (Hi Duke!), maybe I'll get Dungeon Defenders too if the price is nice.

Not looking for much this BF/Holiday. Here's my current wish list:

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion GotY - $5.00
Bastion - $5.00
Jamestown - $2.50
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. CoP - $2.50

That's really all I can think of at the moment. Everything else I either already have or are content to wait on.

Probably capping my budget at $40-50. I spent a lot on the Summer Sale and will most likely only be picking up smaller games or heavily discount large games.

Spent just shy of £60 in the Summer Sale, my first big sale. It would've been much lower save for a handful of impulse purchases on the final day. Interestingly, it was CAG that directed me towards some of the purchases that I otherwise wouldn't have considered - King's Bounty (and its 90 hours playtime!) chief among these :)

Not setting myself a budget this time around, just hunting for bargains at the right prices. I'd like another crack at Oblivion, it must be nearly five years since I played it on the 360 and I'd like to revisit before trying Skyrim. Payday: The Heist has also caught me eye after reading positive things on Rock Paper Shotgun.

I dont cap myself. I went pretty insane for a year or two and spent like $200 at one sale and like $120 at another. However iv got myself to the point where I can usually get by for like $10-$40 at most steam sales because I ask myself 2 important questions.

1. How soon will I play this?

2. How much cheaper will this get?

If I will play something fairly soon and it wont price drop crap tons I pick it up. Meanwhile if its something like an adventure game or deep strategy title that I have to be in a very specific mood for and it $7...well then ill wait and when it inevitably goes on sale again for less I can get it then. I think I managed to only spend like $10 at the summer sale doing that...and you know my bank account is bigger and im still not through my backlog.

My two biggest hopes for these two coming sales are Bastion $5 or less and Torchlight 2 released and on sale for $12.50 or less.

Im on my toes for Witcher 1, Beyond Good and Evil and Psychonauts.
They dont really go on sale all too often. I dont think Ive ever seen Psychonauts on sale since they added Steam achievements to it.

It's probably best not to get hyped up for each new round of daily deals. There aren't going to be 75% discounts on every game you want every day.

And to those of us who have been through the big sales the past few years, we're already going to have A LOT of the games that are going to be on sale. While it may be disappointing to not see so many overwhelmingly awesome deals, I don't think a good bulk of us plan on spending $200+. I'm going to do my best to keep my total under $100 for both sales combined.

Anyway, hoping for some tasty deals on Witcher 2, Dead Island, World in Conflict bundle, DeathSpank series, Renegade Ops, Bastion, Orcs Must Die, Fallout NV DLC, Deus Ex HR DLC.

Psychonauts was $2 once a couple years back, but I haven't seen it go on sale since either.

'Tis the sad truth. I can't honestly say there's much out there that I anticipate getting, simply because I've got most of the games I've had my eye on. Dungeon Defenders is the only thing I'm really hoping to see.

This is a very, very good day. And clear proof that Gabe reads the CAG forums

It's showing as £3.74 Queen's sterling for me, how much is it in yankee doodle dandy dollars?

Yes it did once, but never during one of the major sales. I didn't bite at the time because I was playing the PS2 version.
I've read that Oblivion's 360 gamepad support is a little sketchy. Can anyone confirm or deny?
It doesn't have it

I would think so.

The deluxe is edition is what you guys will want. It includes both of the expansions from the GOTY edition, along with the DLC's listed above. Totally worth that extra dollar and change to acquire the complete Oblivion collection.
A full expansion and ALL the DLC? I would say so.
Understatement of the year.

Glad to see this going on sale. My kid brother was watching me play skyrim last night, and the he was pretty jazzed about it. I told him he should check out Oblivion when it goes on sale, and lo and behold, here it stands. Excellent price.

It doesn't say on the steam page, but anyone know if it's possible to get the 360 controller to work with the Steam version of Oblivion? Guess you have to do it "unofficially" ?

Oblivion: GOTY Edition - Deluxe is A STEAL at that price.
If for some reason you missed out on Oblivion, you owe it to yourself to buy this amazing RPG collection NOW.

I know I'm opening a can of worms here, but...

Oblivion mods. What are they and which ones are best? (I've heard some installation horror stories)
I also don't budget, but I run my purchases by my wife every time I'm ready to check out. Do you prepare Power Point slides complete with graphs charting out why the game is at the best price point it's ever been on Steam? :)
Another good tip for the Steam sales is, when a game you've been waiting on comes up as a Daily Deal for 75% off or better, buy it without delay. Invariably, Steam puts something up at what turns out to be the wrong price point and the deal is stealth-changed. Similarly, if the prices for a single copy and the game's 4-pack don't seem to be at the correct ratio, expect one to be adjusted to reflect the other, be it an increase or further decrease.

This happened with Terraria during the last summer sale. It listed for 45 minutes at 75% off and then got hit to 50%. 50% would have been the deal everyone was glad to have waited for, but knowing that it could have been had for half again of that soured people to it for the rest of the day. Even those who weren't interested in the game seemed annoyed in the end because, in this thread anyway, no one would stop complaining about it.
Another example of a crazy price error was last years Holiday sale the Valve pack for 25 bucks!!!!!:hot:

Strange, I own the Oblivion Deluxe edition but according to the Steam page I own the GOTY and not the deluxe?
This is my first steam sale. So preparing for the worst.
Thanksgiving/Black Friday is simply an appetizer to the five course glutton-fest that is the Steam Holiday sale.
I know I'm opening a can of worms here, but...

Oblivion mods. What are they and which ones are best? (I've heard some installation horror stories)
The horror stories you hear are the truth. There are tons of great mods out there and running a handful aren't going to cause you much trouble, but things start to go wrong if you want to run more than 15-20. You have to worry about your load order, have to read every mod's detailed instructions on how to install the mod/where to place in the load order/which other mods it won't work with, plus worry about what seems like a million other things that can somehow fuck up your game. It is a giant pain in the ass and I do not envy anybody who has to learn how to do it.

Thankfully a quick Google search provided me with this guide (which provides you with a good number of great mods). You'll notice you don't actually get to start installing and enjoying your mods until halfway down the page.

Hopefully in the end, your game won't crash every half-hour and you won't have to spend eons figuring out what's wrong. Godspeed to those of you willing to deal with this complicated bullshit. The payoff IS worth it, despite how bad I make it sound.

holy crap those are a lot of instructions. There is even a Morrowind mod guide on that site. I got ES3&4 from the quakecon pack and havent even installed them yet. Ill probably get to Morrowind after I finish Witcher 2. Morrowind with mods looks pretty damn impressive.
