Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Note: Only the retail games listed above can be registered through Steam. No other retail games can be registered and downloaded using Steam.

Hm. Looks like the disc version I own is only the GOTY. Six bucks and change to have the complete package on Steam? Veeeery tempting.

So I bought the Deluxe Edition and thing is it only says "Elders Scrolls IV: Oblivion"
Is that normal? Or should it be more like "Elders Scrolls IV: Oblivion Deluxe Edition"

heh. Apparently, the Quakecon pack from this year included only the GOTY version, not the deluxe (unless the icon doesn't change). Boo to them.

Edit: After going to the deluxe version page, Steam says I already own it, so I guess they just don't change the icon. So, happy me. Wish there was an easier way to tell, though.
Should I bother gettnig Oblivion if I'm planning on getting Skyrim?
Skyrim is better in just about every way. If you plan on getting it very soon I wouldn't bother. That said, for $6.25 you could buy worse things.
It doesn't say on the steam page, but anyone know if it's possible to get the 360 controller to work with the Steam version of Oblivion? Guess you have to do it "unofficially" ?
I haven't messed with them in a while, but there are 3rd party programs that can pretty much get any game to work with a controller. The more obscure games you'd probably have to do all the mapping of the buttons, X & Y axis etc yourself but for a popular game like Oblivion there should be preconfigured files you can just download.

There's a lot more detail here:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Controls#Xbox_360_Controller_for_Windows

Those instructions use Xpadder but you can also use another program called Pinnacle Game Profiler.
How is modding Oblivion with Steam? I installed it on my older computer but misplaced my disc a long time ago.
I haven't had any issues, at least with regard to Steam and mods running together.
Hey, guess what the Midweek Madness sale is!
Damn good timing on Valve's part. Looks like that's one off my BF list. Now the debate is whether to get the Deluxe for an extra $1.25. Both versions have the Knights and Shivering expansions, so it really comes down to whether the DLC is worth it. Can anyone speak to whether I should care about horse armor, a mage tower, or an extra dungeon, among other things?

dang i almost wanna buy oblivion goty edition even though I own the vanilla version on the xbox 360 and haven't played it yet. How does the pc version compare to the 360 and is the dlc that comes with the goty worth the $5?

You've got to be kidding me. I bought the big Bethesda pack and have the GotY edition but not the Deluxe edition and there's no way to upgrade.

EDIT: Actually, I was wrong. Corrected below. I'm safe!

If you have Vanilla on 360 [not GOTY], you're missing the two expansions [KOTN and Shiv Isles] AND 9 DLC's.

Most importantly, KOTN and Shiv Isles [expansions] is in GOTY Edition.
Trust me - you REALLY want this content.

Honestly, for the few extra hours of gameplay for the extra $1.25, you might as well go GOTY Edition Deluxe so you have EVERYTHING.

I'm starting to think I shouldn't have bought this. I beat the Game of the Year Edition on Xbox 360 a couple years back, but I don't see myself playing this anytime in the near future. Oh well, maybe I'll eventually change my mind.

Actually, wait, no, just tried downloading Oblivion. My Bethesda/iD pack bought copy DOES come with the deluxe DLC it seems. Most excellent to have a complete set.

The additional DLC things are just small mission sets, most of them involve clearing out and establishing a big new stronghold for yourself and kitting it out with amenities you ordinarily had to work a bit to get in the main game. Mehrunes Razor is a big dungeon, I hear, though. They're generally worth the extra dollar.

Spell Tomes adds random spell books to loot and ensures that you will be assaulted by a weaksauce bandit mage with a spell tome pretty soon after breaking out of prison.

The locations are specialized for different classes. The Mage's tower has alchemy equipment, an enchanting altar, and a garden with a ton of different plants. The fort has stuff for fighters, the pirates' ship has stuff for thieves and assassins and other stealthy players. Each of these originally cost a few bucks as DLC when Oblivion was new.

The main attractions, of course, are Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. SI is a big new weird land mass with its own set of quests; about 30 hours of play. KotN is a new set of quests based in Cyrodiil. Maybe 12 hours of play?

And of course, there's the much-maligned Horse Armor DLC.
Aaaaand bought. At this price for the deluxe, the GotY DVD can continue to look pretty on my shelf.
Same for me, except my GotY copy was one from Half Price Books that I got on clearance for $3, and it's now going up on Goozex.
Should I bother gettnig Oblivion if I'm planning on getting Skyrim?
As Genocidal said, Skyrim is better in every way. However, Oblivion is still a fun game. I would recommend getting it because $6 for a game and all its DLC is a good deal. The Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood quests alone are worth the price, IMO.

You have to buy Xpadder now ($10). There's still an older version available but it doesn't work on Windows 7.

I was more interested in how easy it was. I don't really remember doing it on my old computer, but I imagine it's just an extra couple steps in getting to the appropriate folder.
Another example of a crazy price error was last years Holiday sale the Valve pack for 25 bucks!!!!!:hot:

Strange, I own the Oblivion Deluxe edition but according to the Steam page I own the GOTY and not the deluxe?

Thanksgiving/Black Friday is simply an appetizer to the five course glutton-fest that is the Steam Holiday sale.
Hopefully they make that $25 dollar error for the Valve Pack again.

Oblivion and I didn't work out. I played as a pink haired Brenton and found the game play terrible, maybe a mage or khajiit enhances the game play. The real killer was time. It took me forever to get around that map. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time that the game requires.

Plus, everyone in that game is ugly.
Oblivion mods. What are they and which ones are best? (I've heard some installation horror stories)
No installation problems and I've got about two dozen various mods. The key is reading the readme's before you do anything - if the author cannot write a readme, he/she probably shouldn't be trusted writing code. The best mods for me are...

Fov mod - creates a field of view where things in the distance or up real close are out of focus. Really amazing.

Better Cities - complete overhaul and redesign of the cities. This is a huge mod but installs with the Oblivion Mod Manager so you don't have to do much.

Improved foilage - simply boosts the leaves, grass, etc.

On my mobile so I can't link, but just take a gander at the Elder Scrolls Nexus and its Top Files.

Dunno if it was mentioned in this thread but the latest Indie Royale bundle was updated last week to include the Fate of The World DLCs (w/ Steam keys) and the soundtracks to Scoregasm and NightSky (not on Steam).

Yeah it was mentioned earlier, I think the OSTs were mentioned as well, but unsure. Doesn't hurt to mention it again though. ;)

Mine was a flea market find a year ago or so. Pretty sure it was also three bucks. Five at the most.
Plus, everyone in that game is ugly.
There's a mod that replaces all the character models with attractive women, if you're into that sort of thing. ;)
Putting that much time into the lesser game is a poor recommendation IMO. Get Skyrim when you can.
It's definitely worth playing before Skyrim. It provides a lot of context to names and places mentioned in Skyrim, and it's also a genuinely awesome game. I definitely am enjoying Skyrim more, but Oblivion has its place as well.

Ahh I remember spending 100+ hours on Oblivion back in the day. I would sit at my desk with my little notepad drawing tally marks as I tediously grinded minor skills in order to insure getting a +5 attribute bonus upon leveling up.

THANK GOD they got rid of it in Skyrim. I don't care if it added to "immersion" into the roleplaying experience; it drove me crazy.

I installed a mod that overhauled the leveling system and never looked back. What a freakin' tedious mess that was.

I really prefer Skyrim's leveling system, but Oblivion's isn't too bad if you just relax and enjoy it and don't micromanage yourself. That said, I really enjoyed the Francesco mod.

BUT, even without any mods at all, Oblivion Deluxe is totally worth buying. I cannot be silent. It was a great game then, and it's still a great game. If you love Skyrim, you'll at least enjoy Oblivion. As someone said, it's worth it for the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quest lines alone. I also enjoyed the main quest, the Mages Guild... So much to love in that game, with or without mods.

If you're like me, no amount of Elder Scrolls is ever enough. Oblivion was my favorite game of all time, just vanilla on the 360, with no mods, no DLC. I must have put in 200 hours. I'm sure I've since put in 300 with the PC version, and I still never even did all the quests or looted all the dungeons.

Even if you "only" put 20-50 hours into Oblivion before diving into Skyrim, it's totally worth it!

SO THERE.

Also, when you buy it, it will just say Oblivion, but if you click the DLC tab or whatever, it'll all be there. And if it's not, you can check your data files in the launcher menu to see you have all the DLC and the two expansions. Frankly, the DLC is not that impressive, though I never did get around to Mehrunes Razor, and I bet it was really neat.

Buy it.

ALSO, I want to talk about Skyrim. 300,000 people playing it on Steam at the same time! I really hope this means they'll farm out to Obsidian for a side-game, like they did with Fallout: New Vegas, while they meanwhile make giant expansions more like what Morrowind got instead of Oblivion's small DLC packs, and hopefully they'll get right to work on Elder Scrolls VI! 5 years was too long to wait between games for me. I hope this absurd popularity means MORE Elder Scrolls without a drop in quality.

I don't know if I'd trust Obsidian to handle that Elder Scrolls feel. I also don't want Bethesda taking their success as an excuse to pump out a sequel that wasn't baked with love (i.e. Dragon Age 2)

That said, I wouldn't mind a trip to the Black Marsh to be with the Argonians, or more crazy Daedric Prince(ess) worlds ala Shivering Isles. Oh man, or being a pirate going from island to island. That'd be pretty sick.

Agreed, I'd never want a shoddy sequel. I just know they wouldn't let Obsidian do the main games in the series, but they'd let them do something like they did with NV. I thought NV turned out really well!
Kinda off topic, but I just saw the steam trailer for Sideway New York, and that game looks gooooooood
Wow, crazy timing. I was just thinking the other day about a 2D game that wraps itself on 3D surfaces after I saw some stop motion video. Game looks pretty sweet.

As much as I loved Oblivion, it is such a massive game and time commitment that I don't think I will ever be setting foot into it again. There are just too many games out there including Skyrim. It is a great deal and has me tempted to buy it just because it deserves repurchase. I really struggle to not buy things because they are a good deal and to only buy things I will play.

Correct me if I am wrong, I had the original and the GOTY on 360 and the GOTY came with all DLC I thought not just Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles. I may be getting it mixed up with DA GOTY or Fallout 3 GOTY.

On another note, did anyone notice that Costume Quest looks like it got a permanent price drop to $9.99?

That said, I wouldn't mind a trip to the Black Marsh to be with the Argonians, or more crazy Daedric Prince(ess) worlds ala Shivering Isles. Oh man, or being a pirate going from island to island. That'd be pretty sick.
I think it would be fine if it was a side story and clearly noted that it was removed somewhat from the main series while still having ties.

If anything, I think they could improve the feel of the game in some aspects like the writing and choice and consequence. As long as they aren't calling it TESVI even if it had a different feel I think that would be perfectly fine.

Or just have them make an expansion.

I want to play Skyrim so bad that I want Oblivion. Never played it though.

I should probably wait for Skyrim. 12th in line on Goozex for the 360 version. Believe me, I would love to play it on Steam, but a game that complicated with KBM? *dies*

You can always play on a 360 controller on PC. It works really well on most games.

Correct me if I am wrong, I had the original and the GOTY on 360 and the GOTY came with all DLC I thought not just Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles. I may be getting it mixed up with DA GOTY or Fallout 3 GOTY.
Pretty sure the GotY just has Nights of the Nine and Shivering Isles. The Deluxe is what has the DLC. None of the DLC is really all that good though anyway. I mean it's totally worth the $3 or whatever, but it was crap when it came out one piece at a time.

Totally agree!

And yeah, they could just make an expansion pack, but that's not what they did with Fallout 3, and I feel like we're going to see them do again what they did there. Would be happy to be wrong though! I'd really prefer some giant expansion packs. Well, although a whole new game would be pretty neat too, maybe better. hmmmm

Oblivion and Skyrim should work fine with a controller. If they don't work out of box there is always joy2key which will make it playable with a controller. I recommend getting both on PC because of mods.

I think thats only the games that come with xbox 360 controller options like L4D, L4D2, Mafia 2, Borderlands, etc.

You can't just do it with most games cause the pc doesn't recognize some of the buttons like the triggers. I tried with San Andreas and it was bad, and I actually own it for the 360 from games on demand and the controls are fine.

Almost all modern games from the last 3 or more years have no issues with using a 360 controller. It is actually amazing how seamless it is in most games. Something older like San Andreas may have issues though. Remember it was released in 2004 on console 2005 on PC, that is 6-7 years ago before the 360 controller was really prevalent.

There are a few reasons behind this:

1) Now that 99% of games are DX9 or more, as opposed to when they had to support DX7-8, almost all games use the XInput libraries that were introduced in DX9.

2) To get the "Games for Windows" (not to be confused with GFWL) stamp on your box, you're required to meet certain standards, one of which is out-of-the-box 360 controller support.

I'm glad that the dust has settled, and we've got a winner in the controller war. There are also some decent 3rd party 360 controllers like Razer's Onza. I'll probably pick one of those up soon for some of my non-FPS games.

my buddy asked me to pick him up a copy of oblivion deluxe and he'd pay me back so I just bought myself one while I was at it. Now I own it for the 360 and pc like L4d 1 & 2, and GTA IV.

damn you steam sales.

I hope your right cause I bit on it lol. If not i'll just add it to the list of games like Killing Floor that I just have to learn how to use with a mouse and keyboard.
Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity is now on Steam, and it's 25% off right now. Yes, that's right, a Stardock game is on Steam.
wow, never thought I'd see the day. With the gamestop/impulse buy out i guess it makes sense. Stardock has to publish somewhere.
