CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Reasons for hating GFWL

It is extra DRM that is done piss poor
The client glitches out and does constant updating over and over (usually of the same update)
Your saved game is tied to if you choose to play the game online or offline and you can't go both ways, so if you start playing a game while on, then the next day want to play offline you can't use your same save game.
Activating DLC is simply retarded

Note, there are more things and some of these wont pertain to some games I don't think. I personally have not had problems with it (outside of the DLC activation, might as well just cook meth instead, it'd be easier). But my friend has had nothing but constant problems with it, from just getting the shitting client to actually update, then playing the game and finding out he is SOL with his save, because of this stuff he will never ever touch a game with it again regardless of how much he wants the game (for example, he really wanted Dark Souls as he played it some when I had it when it came out but doesn't own a PS3 and now he is thinking of just buying a PS3 instead because it is GFWL)

On GFWL, I had an issue where I would disconnect from the service every 10 minutes, which made playing anything coop or mp impossible. I contacted support and they flat out told me they wouldn't help me because I wasn't using a 360.
I just have a feeling that the lazy port is so it won't sell well and therefore can point to it to show that PC games don't sell.
It honestly wouldn't surprise me. Between Dark Souls and the horribly botched FF7 re-release that Square tried to do on their own with their own client AND limited activations securom even though they own Eidos who has done many successful Steam launches makes me wonder what the hell is wrong with the Japanese and why they even bother with the PC sometimes when they just fail at is so hard.
On GFWL, I had an issue where I would disconnect from the service every 10 minutes, which made playing anything coop or mp impossible. I contacted support and they flat out told me they wouldn't help me because I wasn't using a 360.
This pretty much exemplifies the issue. The 360 is Microsoft's gaming cash cow and everyone knows it. They half ass'ed GFWL, it's glitchy for a lot of people, unnecessary and redudant to have on Steam and Microsoft does not have a huge motivation to improve it because it's not making them much money.

It's basically there so console developers can use part of the 360 code to do a half assed lazy PC port.

There's a reason why companies like Bethesda who obviously have a strong relationship with Microsoft to the point of doing exclusive periods on their DLC don't use GFWL in the PC version of their games even though it would be the easier thing to do.
I've heard the opposite for Magicka DLC maps, that only the host needs the maps, and everyone else that joins can play on them.
I recall this being true as well, my friend and I were able to play together when I hosted maps that he did not own. Not sure if anything has changed since then though, so I would double check on the Magicka forums.
re: Magicka

Out of curiousity, how does the DLC work with multiplayer? That game has so darned much DLC would there problems like if one person has Star Trek outfits they can't play with somebody else who doesn't, etc?
Because it is Steamworks, all players, regardless of content purchased, have all of the content loaded locally. Thus the game has the assets available to render other players. The developer can simply allow whatever combinations of compatibility they want, and if they are smart, make it as flexible as possible to entice other players to pick up DLC.
I've heard the opposite for Magicka DLC maps, that only the host needs the maps, and everyone else that joins can play on them.
Weird, I always had issues when friends tried to join me back when I played it when they didn't have the maps. I stopped playing right after Vietnam though. Oh well, that's always better if it works that way.
Weird, I always had issues when friends tried to join me back when I played it when they didn't have the maps. Oh well, that's always better if it works that way.
Magicka has really crappy netcode.. so it could've been that, unless it specifically gave you an error message saying they didn't have the maps so they couldn't join or something. Or maybe they changed how it works, no idea.

The only game with GFWL that I have had an issue with is The Club. I had it working prior to having to restore my system due to a dumbass mistake on my part, by since restoring my system I can't get the stupid thing to update. I have read tons of shit online, but it still won't work. I know, it is The Club, so not like it is a major loss, but still, I actually enjoy that game lol.

I think I had a problem with Arkham Asylum but it was because I tried to run the game without updating the GWfL client first and because I had an older version of GWfL, the game wouldn't run in "online" mode. All I had to do was update GWfL and the problem was fixed.

I guess I've been lucky but I haven't had any other problems with it.

You assume that programmers would code intelligently like that. Never count on seeing that. It's more often than not a generic "Unable to join." error. I wish creating software and games had some kind of basic standards system so they'd suck just a bit less. Though the copyright system in the US is really holding something like that back.
Anyone know if I buy Sleeping Dogs from Green Man Gaming will I get the Team Fortress 2 pre-order items?
You won't.

Alright, alright, twist my arm, why don't you. I don't have/use a mic, though.

I'm really close to getting Airline Tycoon. I like those silly simulator games and I know it's not Garbage Truck Simulator but still it might scratch the simulator itch.
Alright, alright, twist my arm, why don't you. I don't have/use a mic, though.
You know, I drank the Kool Aid and got the damned thing from CAGKrazy.

If you asked me what the least appealing game I could think of would be I can honestly say a semi-realistic FPS set in the modern day where you play the bad guy while wearing a friggin clown mask would be just about the least appealing sort of game to me that I can come up with.

But the peer pressure (and kazillion sales) was just too much and the bard is such a pusher.

Yes, yes, sure. I wish those were the only problems.

Here are more glaring issues: Clunky interface, save file and game file corruption, games refusing to run, updates can be a nightmare, etc.
Oh Sophita, I just knew you were going to come to the rescue of Dark Souls. :D

Gameplay is more important than graphics to me to a point. I'll pay $3 or $5 for a casual game running on 1990s resolutions, sure. But this is 2012 and I'm not paying $40 for some lazy port done by clueless Japanese that really should have outsourced it because they didn't know what the hell they were doing.
Exactly, I don't even have a problem playing a game from the 90's how it originally looking cause at the time it was cutting edge. A 2012 game for 30 or 40 bucks should not be stuck in low res and a low capped FPS due to the ineptitude of the developer in coding for the pc.
:D Well you don't need to spend 40$ on it and honestly if it is bad as they I will just stick to my PS3 copy as well. Just hoping they are rumors and also if they aren't hoping modders pick it up and or can pick it up and improve on the game even if it means a loss of the online(I mean look at STALKER that game was amazing just because of unoffical patches and mods same with Vampire:Bloodlines, and also Oblivion) which i've never been concerned with anyways in the game; other than the cool way in how you can leave hints for other players. Just with so much gloom figure i'd try and bring up the positives of the game.

Besides like you said, at the very least the game is worth it at the 5-10$ range. I mean that's like 18 wheels of steel price range
$5-10 is the sweet spot for this game. If the locked res and fps cap can be modded or if the modding community takes off then the value increases exponentially.
I don't know if modders can fix the internal resolution thing. Maybe, but that's a lot tougher than something like just swapping out textures. We'll see I guess.

I don't understand why they didn't just let the Eastern Europeans do the port like they did with Ninja Blade, which reminds me I got that from Indie Gala a while back and need to install it and give it a go.
Right, we shall see.

Anyone know any examples of modders fixing a locked internal resolution for a game?

Too bad that bundle didn't come with a Steam code for Ninja Blade. I still want to try that game.
I might be tempted if they run the Tropico 4 bundle again. I hate that these big bundles never seem to include all the DLC.

So while I while I was waiting for Steam to update, I came across this:

http://storybundle.com/

"Welcome to StoryBundle! We're featuring our first bundle, the Big Bang Bundle, where you can get seven fantastic ebooks at one low pay-what-you-want price."

Completely off-topic, but it might be interesting to somebody. And no, ebooks do not activate no Steam. ;)
Now I know you're not supposed to judge a book my its cover, but I don't know what it is about most scifi/fantasy covers, they just turn me off. Don't get me wrong I do like those genres, albeit a bit picky about them, but sometimes the covers just seem so unappealing (like now) that I won't even flip the book open to read the inside flap.

I've debated a 360 a number of times, there's just so much PC overlap this generation, that I haven't found a compelling reason to. Not like my still treasured PS2 slim.
Honestly, coming from someone who owns all three major consoles of this gen, there is very little reason to get one if you're a PC gamer. If there was one to debate on I'd say stick with sony and get the PS3, better variety of exclusives, not to mention more of them. There is no reason to get a 360, unless you're into the few exclusives they have left, or *giggle* want a kinect.

This game sounds perfect for an indie bundle. Just saying ;).

Just tried Bang Bang racing and definitely not my thing. Top down RC racer basically. The controls aren't very intuitive IMO. If you are going left to right on a track the left and right directional button coincides with left and right as you sort of would see it on the screen. If you happen to be going up to down on a track it you realize the left and right buttons are mapped to the drivers perspective and not yours, so when you are driving up to down it feels the the controls get reversed. Probably like that in all racers this style, but I do not like it.

I own all three as well along with Kinect and Move. I do use the Kinect and Move for sports games but little else. I play the PS3 the most but prefer the Xbox controller. I hate the idea of paying extra money to access apps like Netflix that I already have to subscribe to so I use the PS3 for streaming Netflix and Amazon Video instead of the Xbox. I have a small collection of blu-ray movies so there is another use for the PS3. If I didn't enjoy Mario Kart so much I would not have much need for the Wii although I do co-op on it with friends more than the PS3 and Xbox because they think the Wii is fun.

One of these days I will get a dedicated gaming/multimedia machine (I use a laptop right now for any PC gaming I do) and get rid of everything else. I can't imagine trying to fit it all in an RV anyway.
I just have a feeling that the lazy port is so it won't sell well and therefore can point to it to show that PC games don't sell.
You can count on that, if this does badly, That From and any other Japanese studio will use it as proof and reason to stay away from PC Games. Like I said in their minds playing devil's advocate they are, "Listening to the demand and bringing the game they petitioned for" Rather or not they understand why the demand suddenly dropped with GFWL and just a barebones port is a slim chance.

Instead they will simply hear all the other Japanese developers tell them,"Told you so! PC Gaming is dead" this will multiply by a hundred if Dark Souls ends up in the top pirated game as well as bombing. Thing is in Japan as I hear PC Gaming is viewed as like the very bottom of what to develop for due to all the audience there being on Consoles and Handhelds.

So bottom line, You can count on this game being THE example of why Japanese companies drop the idea of PC Games. If it bombs and is pirated to high haven. Rather or not that is fair when regards to the game's issues or not is another issue.

If they pitch it aggressively and cut it aggressively it will make bank. Even the mediocre Metro 2033 made money by routinely dropping to $5.

Yeah, I had that feeling too. Definitely not buying it now.

I have to confess, I own a kinect too, though it was a gift, which makes me feel even more guilty that I haven't used it much besides the odd mini/sports game and voice commands for ME3. I do know a lot of people prefer the 360 controller, especially men, and I can see why. Personally I don't have a preference, although the wireless ones always seem so damn heavy coming off of using a PS controller.

Yeah, I should have mentioned the Bluray player and free use of streaming apps like netflix. Also, free multiplayer. I myself don't see any reason to subscribe to their gold membership, unless you like multiplayer and have a large majority of your friends on there.

edit: And now back to the steam sales...

Surprising that Indie Royale didn't drop today. Looking at the title of the next bundle again, "Gone Fishin' Bundle," I'm hoping it's a bunch of water-themed simulation games just for Motoki.

I'm actually happy that Maple Story finally found its way to Steam. That game did a number on your computer sometimes, refused to uninstall, something about making your mouse not pick up in some cases, etc. Nice to see it streamlined into the Steam client.

(Don't even bother with the Starter and Value Packs though. That's a lot of useless crap for too much money. $5 for a 90-day pet may be a bit cheaper than it is in game though.)

And I feel like a real cheapass saying it, but I wish that Story Bundle thing let you pay a penny. I'd grab them for that, but a dollar for a handful of indie books that no one has ever heard of? Just not for me I guess, ah well. The writers do deserve to be paid more for their work though (I'm a writer and I know how hard it can be sometimes).

Agreed, can't wait to have to shell money out for it!
Which version of Half-life 1 are you modifying? If it's the source re-release, you can try the Source Multiplayer Dedicated Server tool. Well actually the problem is occurring with both Source and Half-Life mods... I tried using the console and just connecting directly to friend's IP, and that didn't work either. I know Hamachi would be easy, and solve everything, but I just don't wanna use such a "user" program. I have my own VPN, if I end up having to resort to Hamachi, I'd just rather go through the trouble of teaching all friends about VPNs and how to connect to mine. Translation, there will be too many people that just don't get it and I'll be forced to conform and use something like Hamachi.

Honostly, never had issues with GFWL. As I said before (long way back now) the only game that gave me trouble was Halo 2...but that was only because it uses a WAY outdated GFWL and you can solve the problem by just making sure you install Halo 2 before installing any updated GFWL (as Halo 2 works fine if you update GFWL AFTER it). I think all the hate here comes from GFWL + Steam issues.

This a flat out libelous lie! If you took the time to learn anything, you'd know that GFWL save files typically exist in separate folders based on account. Meaning that all you have to do is copy (or hard link) you save files out of the folder for your online account into the account for your offline one (ie, the "account" made for the "user account" of the computer)

I was gonna come and say this. I've played literally 15 seconds of Maple Story way, way back; just didn't interest me. I plan on checking it out again though. It always had such polarizing reception.

It's definitely not for everyone, and even if you do get into it, it's easy to get tired of the grinding that it comes with at later levels. Nexon does a pretty good job at adding new content on a VERY regular basis though, so if you're keen on keeping up with things, there's always something new to do (and level up doing).

It's one of the only side-scrolling Metroidvania style MMORPGs around, and that's probably the biggest reason I used to play the heck out of it. There's something more fulfilling about actually moving and jumping and attacking your enemies via your own skill rather than just clicking the enemy and watching your character trade blows with it until someone dies.

Besides that, it's a cutesy game, plain and simple. It's kind of a Pokemon thing I guess, where if you get past the cutesy aspect, you see that it's still a complex game in and of itself and is pretty well made.

(Of course it's also of note that it's a lot funner with friends. It's a VERY social game.)

I'm quite amused - I had forgotten about the Humble Music Bundle, and, humorously enough, it currently has less than 10 minutes to go. I really wasn't interested in most of the albums, but the Valkyria Chronicles "Best of" soundtrack was a bit too nice to pass up on. It's a good thing I grabbed it in time.
:D Nice to hear. There's a few things on PS3 that interest me, but no one thing is yet able to push me over the console cost and my and the shackles of my PC gaming backlog. Oddly enough I last considered a 360 in December when I was shopping for a Kinect (for a robot sensor), wound up with just a Kinect for $100.
This has been common for top down whole-track-fits-on-screen racers going back to DOS days. Irritating if you are unable to project yourself into the vehicles's frame of reference. Oddly, driving games that don't fit on one screen Autoduel (1985) to Zombie Driver & Renegade Ops seems to use the push-in-desired-direction.
I own all three as well along with Kinect and Move. I do use the Kinect and Move for sports games but little else. I play the PS3 the most but prefer the Xbox controller. ...

One of these days I will get a dedicated gaming/multimedia machine (I use a laptop right now for any PC gaming I do) and get rid of everything else. I can't imagine trying to fit it all in an RV anyway.
>.> I've lived in less than 250 sq ft for over a decade. I know the feeling.
I've noticed the same. I have really short fingers, and prefer a DS2/3. The DS3 is incredibly featherweight compared to any controller in recent memory: DS2, 360, F510, Rumblepad 2.

It's about time for another humble bundle with games. I hope we'll see new humble entries in steam registry during next week.

That's true maybe their first real Steam Sale will open their eyes $.$ to how many people buy things in that 5$ range.

To everyone complaining about Magicka: this is the first time the "The Other Side of the Coin" expansion for Magicka has been on sale, and it's 75% off. So it's actually rather significant.

And just to clarify the multiplayer again: only one person in a game needs the map/expansion for everyone to be able to play it. I hate seeing people post false information about stuff like that.

I was going to say that it'll be a while, but, in all honesty, they seem to be offering these bundles every few months now.

Initially, it was every 5-8 months, but it has steadily been decreasing with the assistance of "alternate bundles." (For example, Humble Voxatron Debut, Humble Bundle Mojam, and Humble Botanicula Debut.)

Whatever the case may be, I find the "main bundles," or the numbered entries, to be excellent collections of games. Therefore, I always look forward to what the next offer will be.

Hopefully, the next bundle isn't far off.

EDIT:

We do thank you for the clarification. I was going to say that there are far worse things to get upset about, but, then again, I hate it when people refer to a single legal entity, such as Sony or Nintendo, with pluralized language.

"Square-Enix are"

Thanks for pointing that out. I wasn't going to bother looking at the collection but the pack I bought from Amazon did not include all of the available DLC and TOSOTC is definitely missing.

Another thing I don't care for with GFWL is that it uses your same Microsoft ID for everything. My hotmail account got hacked a little bit ago and luckily nothing serious happened but still.

I guess the sensible thing to do would have been to create a different ID for GFWL but at this point the games that I own and DLC are already tied to the hotmail and office cloud and MSN messenger etc etc account.
Surprising that Indie Royale didn't drop today. Looking at the title of the next bundle again, "Gone Fishin' Bundle," I'm hoping it's a bunch of water-themed simulation games just for Motoki.
I was hitting F5 all day waiting for that damned thing to drop too. I'm so paranoid it will hit when I'm not looking and I'll have to pay $5 instead of $4.

I honestly don't think Dark Souls will be pirated more than any other game. Anyway, that's a really difficult thing to measure. I do think it will be watched much more closely than your average other PC game being pirated. Like I always say, if you are looking for something hard enough, you will find it.

It's true that the PC isn't super popular for gaming in Japan but it does exist. Falcom has made PC games for years and while most of them did get ported to the various consoles, their games like the Ys series started out for the PC. The versions on Steam aren't console ports. They are direct PC made games that have been simply translated into English.

Also they do have an indie scene over there too. That's where Carpe Fulgar got their stuff from. At first they said no one would give them the time of day but suddenly after the success of Recettear on Steam Japanese indies were willing to talk to them. Maybe we'll see some more stuff via that route too.
If they pitch it aggressively and cut it aggressively it will make bank. Even the mediocre Metro 2033 made money by routinely dropping to $5.
Yes but this is the Japanese we are talking about. Look how chintzy Capcom is with their sales. From admitted to being utterly clueless about the PC gaming market in the US so I don't think they will grasp the concept that PC games can and do get a huge spike in sales long after release when the prices get cut drastically.

We'll see what they do and hopefully I am wrong, but they probably will do crappy sales and then use that as further 'evidence' that PC games don't sell.

OTOH Ninja Blade has been $5 a few times and Dark Souls is actually being sold as Steam redeemable (but not Steamworks) on other sites like Gamersgate and GMG so there's potential for sales there too.

I don't have a PS3 or 360 but oddly enough have the controllers from both. I bought the PS3 controller mostly for Android and while I know it can work on the PC, I prefer the way the 360 one feels, plus more games seem to have native support for the 360 controller these days.

I also love my new funky U shaped wireless wheel controller.

Good to know so I can avoid them. I love Zombie Driver by the way. I don't know if it has more to do with there being a set track as opposed to an open arena. Bang Bang the track doesn't fit on the screen, but the controls are the same. So I think the difference is the parameters of there being a track constricting movement and boundaries on the track. Either way, I have no interest in this style of racer. I like Twisted Metal and Zombie Driver type games, kart games for goofy fun, the RC racer genre is just not my thing.

I have small hands and thought the PS3 controller would be a better fit but the muscles at the bottom of my hand cramp up when I use it for any significant amount of time. Also, I really suck at aiming in FPS games but I seem to suck a bit less with the 360 controller.
...I also love my new funky U shaped wireless wheel controller.
I really want one of those. I check my Amazon cart every day to see if the price has gone down. In addition to sucking at aiming in FPS games I also suck at racing games and manage to fling my car/kart/motorcycle off the track on a regular basis. I fling a bit less with a racing wheel over a controller.

Maybe I should just stick with point and click adventure games.
