CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

All three are completely reasonable reasons to go into fits of rage. Also: misusing "literally."

Well actually the problem is occurring with both Source and Half-Life mods... I tried using the console and just connecting directly to friend's IP, and that didn't work either. I know Hamachi would be easy, and solve everything, but I just don't wanna use such a "user" program. I have my own VPN, if I end up having to resort to Hamachi, I'd just rather go through the trouble of teaching all friends about VPNs and how to connect to mine. Translation, there will be too many people that just don't get it and I'll be forced to conform and use something like Hamachi.

Hmm, it sounds like the netcode for this mod has been broken somehow, then; unless they really intended the mod to only be playable via an actual LAN or a VLAN... That kind of sucks either way. Did you make sure every person's copy of the mod and whatnot was the latest version or the last known working configuration? Maybe it's a version issue.

I caved and bought the Magicka DLC I did not have because I wanted a couple of them (mainly Other Side of The Coin and the villain clothes).

I looked a few pages back and didn't see anything, but it looks like there is a deal on Dungeons Gold Edition (80% off) on Steam.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? The Meta Critic score is kind of low but it looks a lot like the old Dungeon Keeper games.

From what I have heard, it pales in comparison to the old Dungeon Keeper games. It's probably prettier, but it seems pretty shallow to me.

For $2.99 though...

This was discussed before a while back when it was on sale another time. Most of the complaints over this game amount to 'Hey I was expecting Dungeon Keep and it's not so I'm angry!'.

I think someone described it as a theme park for heroes. I suppose I should play it and find out considering I bought the Kalypso pack last year. :p

Basically though opinions seem to be go in expecting Dungeon Keeper and be severely disappointed. Go in totally open without expectation and it's not a bad game for what it is especially if you can get it cheap.

Using plural verbs for collective singular nouns is a pretty common british convention, which is one more reason we're better ;). I believe Mode 7 is a british developer, so there you go.

Okay just playing through the tutorial of Dungeons (the first one) and very briefly a bit of the game, I can see the theme park part of it and some tower defense too. Seems okay for a few dollars if you like that sort of game.

Man, this is odd - I was looking through my Steam library when, all of a sudden, it said I unlocked an Achievement - "Race for the Pennant." (I believe it's a Team Fortress 2 Achievement.)

I didn't even know those activated right there on the main Steam client window.

B. Bunny, I've just been introduced to a game on Steam I've never heard of before, and it's on your "owner's list". It looked interesting as hell, and I wanted someones input here who's actually played it. It had a very low metacritic score, but when I went to look at those, only the critics panned it, while the user reviews seemed very positive, with a score to match. So my question is have you played it, can you give your review, or has CryoStasis been relagated to your backlog?

The Defense Grid 2 Kickstarter ends in 4 days and it's just shy of its goal. Please consider supporting if you're a fan of the original or tower defense games in general.
Total scam. It isn't the DG2 Kickstarter, it is the "Make 8 more maps for DG1, but if we some how raise 4 times that amount, we'll actually make DG2." Sorry, if they had just been upfront about it, maybe, but no thanks.

I love love love Defense Grid and want nothing more but for Defense Grid 2. But they pretty much did Kickstarter the exact way you shouldn't.

Should of made the goal $1 mill from the start, that way people would know everything they will get when the goal is reach. In this case, the main attraction is DG2, and sure with the 250k goal you will get it still, but it will take much longer to make (they also didn't make that clear till later after all the sites posted about their kickstarter).

If the goal was 1 mill from the start, I'd pledged my $15-$30 whatever and as long as the goal was reach I'd know I'd have DG2 in a reasonable time period as well as the other extras. Instead, me and I am positive many many others rather wait and see if they get up to that goal so they pretty much neutered themselves doing this. Honestly, the best thing for them would be for the kickstarter to fail so they can redesign how they set it up and can get the funding they truly need.

That being said, I will buy DG2 the day it comes out, but I'm not doing the kickstarter in its current state.

Sadly backlogged for now got it during the sale in the 1C Action Pack with Necrovision and Death to Spies:)cry:) But like you said i've heard many good things about the game. I 've heard the performance can be really bad depending on the PC kind of like what happened with Stalker unpatched or Metro 2033 or really any other Russian made game that tries to do really fancy graphics but have a poorly made engine doing it.

I've heard it's a really unique FPS like survival game though, having to like find sources of heat as it takes place in the arctic. Pretty much everyone I saw who played the game said despite the issues with performance it is one of their favorite games. So look forward to playing it myself.

Hmm, the only related thing I could find about it with some googling was this thread on the Steampowered forums. LINK: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1289845 Try some of the solutions and small changes there and see how it works, but if those don't work I would contact Valve's admittedly not so great support and see if they know how to fix the problems.

I need to play Cryostasis myself. I own it and just just started it late this winter when GMG did a 50% off sale on Skyrim and I never went back... What little I played of it though I was enjoying. It has that Stalker/Metro 2033 bleakness to it if you like that sort of thing.

On the plus side, I had bought Cryostasis for $1.25 from Amazon during their winter sale and received one of the $5 coupons they were giving out for purchases. Score!

Cryostasis is great. There are a few memorable moments and some pretty unique gameplay elements, including the mental echo ability which is both an interesting idea and also is a pretty innovative way to advance the story. The story and atmosphere are also some of its highlights, and I'd definitely recommend it to you if you enjoy a game with a nice story.

The game was criticized by the poor optimization and somewhat subpar combat mechanisms upon release, but don't let that stop you - it's definitely worth playing.

Oh no, I meant that I'm an American, and because only our poorly educated (granted, an unfortunately large segment of our population) use plural verbs with collective singular nouns, we're automatically better. Only fools would make a convention of such poor grammar

Nail'd is $8 (DLC: $2) this week on gamersgate. $8.50 for both if you have the IGN discount. Seeing DRM:Tages holds me back though.

I don't think this is at all related to my problem, HOWEVER, its VERY interesting and I've very thankful for the information. I'll definitely be using it, as I have ALOT of mods and didn't think that some might have issues in the line of this. Thanks

Side note for anyone who cares...2 weeks later...and I finally got my steamgifts winning of Nexuiz!! Timing seems awfully convenient, but I don't care, it was free! Not like I was entitled to it, but it just sucked that my first (and so quickly) steamgifts winning ended up possibly being BS.
You can count on that, if this does badly, That From and any other Japanese studio will use it as proof and reason to stay away from PC Games. Like I said in their minds playing devil's advocate they are, "Listening to the demand and bringing the game they petitioned for" Rather or not they understand why the demand suddenly dropped with GFWL and just a barebones port is a slim chance.

Instead they will simply hear all the other Japanese developers tell them,"Told you so! PC Gaming is dead" this will multiply by a hundred if Dark Souls ends up in the top pirated game as well as bombing. Thing is in Japan as I hear PC Gaming is viewed as like the very bottom of what to develop for due to all the audience there being on Consoles and Handhelds.

So bottom line, You can count on this game being THE example of why Japanese companies drop the idea of PC Games. If it bombs and is pirated to high haven. Rather or not that is fair when regards to the game's issues or not is another issue.
I believe that Japanese developers do want to get into PC gaming. The problem is they have very little experience in making game for PCs. They are used to closed platforms with very few variations on the different consoles. The developers find it overwhelming from going from Q/A testing on a few different SKUs to literally thousands of different possible PC builds that don't even all have the same O/S.

Square-Enix sees the potential for selling their games on the PC and has been trying to take steps to become a bigger publisher in the PC market.

TotalBiscuit did a video on it, looks pretty interesting, feels like its what Dungeons should have been.

I hear ya, the demo didn't manage to entice me when I last tried it, I'm about to give it another go just to see if its even worth the 6 bucks. Q1 2013 is still quite some time away.

This is pretty much my same reaction to the Defense Grid 2 Kickstarter. They really shot themselves in the foot with the way they handled it. That said, I'm probably going to go ahead and put some money in just because I like the game so much. Though, I totally understand why they are having trouble with getting it funded when the initial impression they gave was that all you'd be getting was a map pack.

I came to this thread to help me make a decision on if I should pick up dungeons and ended up buying books instead. Steam technically already sells movies and music so one of these days we might be buying books on steam.

This weekend might spark up more competition, but generally I don't have much fun playing online. I recommend the old standbys of Quake and UT on principle that everything in Nexuiz has been done before, and it was better in those series.

I really want one of those. I check my Amazon cart every day to see if the price has gone down. I got my boy atreyuer's back on this one, no homo. The term is just a term now. No one really thinks they are going to be accidently deemed gay or ever takes the term seriously. But the term isn't even about making a pass about anyone, it's about being deemed sensitive or other undesirable traits when it comes to being a super manly man. So most reasonable people never took it seriously and use it mostly to poke fun at the term.
