Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V6! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

With the V6 Thread, we're trying a slight formatting change. We used to list every possible Steam deal in the OP, but they change too frequently for anyone to keep up with (even in the Wiki format). So now, we'll leave regular minor sales out of the OP. This post will keep track of major sales (Winter sale, etc.), Steam deals available through other sellers (like Amazon), Preorder deals, and Group Buys.

I would still greatly appreciate help from you folks at home in keeping this smaller-scale OP up-to-date. This is a Wiki post so anyone can contribute. Wiki instructions:
Thanks for your help! If you notice a sale has ended, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see something does need to be added, then kindly add it to the list.

Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.

Steam Sales - Updated 1/22

CAG Threads Featuring Steam Games on Sale Elsewhere - Updated 1/9

Preorder Deals - Updated 1/10
Group Buy Deals - Updated 1/9/13

Free Stuff - List needs updating with F2P games!
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

Steam's explanation and list of Steam-activatable keys

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card. The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

You can buy day of the tentacle too. It includes a copy of the original maniac mansion.

About adventure games. I love them. Sadly I started later, so one of my first one was legend of kyrandia. I use to have console games before, computers were too expensive. My first pc was a 386, and couldn't go back to console gaming after playing pc games.

I think telltale and other companies doing "funny" and "short" (or chapter based) adventure games are doing a great job. My wife wasn't a pc gamer before playing puzzle agent, Sam & max, the journey down and deponia . She is now a fan of adventure games! She didn't liked the more serious/lengthy ones... But I think she will later on.

If you find a copy, you can run it under ScummVM.

There was a fan remake of Maniac Mansion from a few years back called "Maniac Mansion Deluxe". It seemed fairly true to the original from what I could tell. You can grab it for free from here.

I think this is a good point. We're always quick to shout out some of the major classics of the genre when someone asks about getting in to adventure games. Unfortunately, some of those can be pretty daunting to a newcomer (your wife, for example), particularly if they have to pixel hunt. I think it really helps to learn the mechanics and logic of the genre in lighter games. As you mentioned, TellTale does a great job of being new player friendly. In fact, I'd almost say their Back to the Future game is the perfect gateway in to adventure gaming. It presents the basic features of an adventure game in an engaging but light story, and it's pretty easy to get through.

Speaking of newer adventure games segmented into chapters, a bunch of people kept going on about how good Walking Dead was, but I'm all bah humbug 'I hate zombies and I don't watch the tv show' so I avoided playing it. I did of course buy it on a cheap sale and throw it into the backlog like a good digital hoarder.

Well Raptr finally made me get off my ass and play it and I actually quite like it. You don't need to have watched the show at all and I think they overall did a good job with making an interesting story based modern Adventure game, even for a zombie-hating curmudgeon like me.

I didn't bought back to the future to my wife the last time it was on sale because... I wanted it for me first! Hahaha. I'm a bttf huge fan. Also, she wasn't so hooked by the time... I think I bought Sam & max to her... And then she became an adventure fan.

I think telltale creates a whole adventure revolution again with the walking dead. I hope we'll see some classic revival soon. I really want a new kyrandia and maniac mansion game! And, why not a dune 1 remake? I still treasure that one

I used to play Adventure games all the time. Space Quest, Kings Quest, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, The Dig, Indiana Jones, Sam and Max, The Monkey Island games, Grim Fandango, etc.

However, the games started to become fewer and now it seems there is a revival. :)

How is Future Soldier on PC? I might be in for this bundle deal.

Mark of the Ninja is utterly sterling but you could probably get it cheaper elsewise.

There's always been more adventure games than people have noticed.

I think ScummVM can play Maniac Mansion on PC (As well as the whole Lucasarts retinue and then sem.). I see no reason why it shouldn't, hell, MM came for free with DoTT CD as an Easter Egg.

Spoilers:
You can irreversibly screw up. Unrelated, launching the car as a rocket is not something cool to watch. It's something you should not do without a good reason.

Finally, there's a reason why Bernard is the star of DoTT. I think many more endings are open to you with him and the journalist on your team.

Got a quick question on the Future Soldier Pack. I know on the front page it advertises the season pass as being part of the bundle. However, it's actually all the DLC's and not the specific "Season Pass" item. I'm assuming these DLC's are the season pass and no more DLC's are planned to be released.

Well, played some War of the Roses...

The melee definitely doesn't live up to Chivalry standards. When determining your type of attack based on where you look is a horrible mechanic. Two handed polearms range feel like they have the same range as a one handed weapon. You have to be right up against another person just to hit. Archery is definitely easier to hit with in this game compared to Chivalry. Classes and customizing loadouts look awesome. But when most of it is hampered by a horrible melee system...

I'm definitely going to pass on this one.

Thanks for the link - I actually feel like revisiting Maniac Mansion, so this will provide some nice changes. Personally, I have some nice memories of the Commodore 64 version. Is that considered the best version, or is the PC version just as well regarded?

Eh, having played the game quite a bit, completely disagree. It matters where you hit in War of the Roses, and the aiming mechanic works fine. If you hit someone with plate armor in the shoulder (pauldrons), you're probably not going to do any damage. If you hit them in the mid section/side with a power, charged attack, they're going to be hurting. It's difficult, very difficult, but the game is more of a medieval combat simulator, as opposed to Call of Duty: Medieval Warfare. It's very technical and complex; hell you even choose the type of metal and grind on your blade, as well as your combat style (Milanese, Imperial, etc). The game can be intimidating at first.

Pole arms do NOT hit when you're close to an enemy. If you are too close (i.e. one handed sword range), you will hit with the stalk of the weapon and will do no damage. Successful hits with a pole arm are very tricky range-wise, but are extremely rewarding (especially when you hit that sweet spot right in the neck and instakill your target with a decapitation).

If the game isn't for you and Chivalry is funner, that's cool. Just saying, that bit about pole arms is completely off base.

I haven't played War of Roses yet. The free weekend of Chivalry was enough to make me sell off my key though. It wasn't bad and somewhat enjoyable, but I sucked at it and I felt the physics weren't all that in the game. I probably needed to get used to it. I think with these melee based MP games you just have to pick a side and learn their system and go with it and it will be fun as long as the game isn't completely broken.

The physics are definitely there in WotR. Arguably too much for people who aren't looking to play a difficult simulator-esque game. You move slowly (heavy armor), your swings with heavy weapons are sluggish and take forethought and charging, etc.

I watched a lot of gameplay footage of Chivalry, and it seems like the arcade version of the genre. Understand that when I say that, I'm basically saying WotR = Battlefield 3, Chivalry = CoD:MW. One has more realism (WotR is definitely more realistic than BF3, even), while one is fast paced and arcadey, but not so realistic.

To each his own, just explaining things.

Yeah, but you determine your type of attack with mouse direction and lmb. Instead of a dedicated mouse button seperate from mouse look, there will be conflicts at times. I admit, I'm not very good at war of the roses, but half the time I get a side attack instead of pierce. In War of the Roses, I don't get that sense of spacing and speed that I get from playing Chivalry. Maybe it's the camera, maybe it's me, or maybe it's the different engine, but I prefer the Chivalry melee system much much more than what's offered in War of the Roses.

Besides, WotR is more like CoD than anything else because of the class customization. Chivalry, all there really is to it is mastering weapons. The unlocks are more of a side thing to further hone in your weapon and playstyle.

I honestly don't care which game requires more skill, but when you end up fighting system mechanics, a fun time isn't exactly guaranteed.

Right, the attack type system takes a little getting used to, but I got accustomed to it and hardly ever make a wrong attack anymore, and I'm by no means very good at the game (and I'm using one of the hardest weapons in the game to use). I can't count how many games I've "fought" control mechanics when I first started playing... and then got used to them and had no problem. WotR was no different there.

Customization in a game =/= the game being like CoD though. Like I said, Chivalry is fast paced and not very realistic. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but that's why I'm equating it to CoD. CoD is past paced and not very realistic. WotR is slower paced and very realistic. Customization, in my opinion, is always a good thing, and is the only reason I still bother with CoD games. Besides deep customization, though, WotR is the polar opposite of CoD. Customization is an added feature, not a determining factor of feel, genre, whatever.

Ah i figured out why I dislike the system in WotR. It reminds me of motion controls for the wii. It essentially is a motion control. Mouse look + LMB is similar to swinging a wiimote and pressing A. Honestly, this is the first time I have ever seen mouse look+lmb as a keybind. Almost always mouse look is independent and reserved for panning the camera.

But yeah, everyone tryout the game for yourself. Make your own opinions on the game.

You do realize you can change the attack scheme to be controlled by the keyboard instead of the mouse, right? Pretty sure you just tick a box in the options and it changes.

So, war of the roses is more or less like Mount and Blade? I love that game. The battle is hard and you need to get used to it, but once you do, is great. I will try War of the Roses this weekend.

I played chivalry during it's free weekend too, and found it very fun... didn't bought it, but was fun

Yes, this. WotR is more or less the spiritual successor of Mount and Blade... Unfortunately it's multiplayer only.

I'd kill for a single player mode on WotR like M&B Warband had.

I got Dead Space 2 from Amazon last year and it was Origin activated. It's good bundle, no Guns, Boots, n Wheels, but few bundles can strive to that level of excellence.

Mount & Blade is one of those games you can play forever. With all the mods out there and the freedom you have... is really awesome. That one and king's bounty are games I'm afraid to continue playing, because they are time sucking games. Oh, and killing floor too.

Mount and Blade 2 will likely have a single player campaign, so at least there's that to look forward to?

Maybe... The Cat Lady?

King's Bounty certainly is until you get about 75% through the game and it turns into bleh. Well it doesn't really turn into it but you more so realize the game hasn't offered anything new for about the past 5 hours and won't for the next 10-15.

Agreed with King's Bounty. I enjoy the games but at a certain point you've had your fill and you stop. Got about 90% through The Legend and only about 50% or so through AP. Don't really have much of a desire to buy Warriors of the North since it's the same experience with a few tweaks.

Yeah, I can understand that sentiment. Then again, I feel that way about most games. The last chunk of King's Bounty: The Legend hasn't been too bad, since I put time into setting up a very strong, renewable army (full demons).

King's Bounty pretty much requires you to experiment with army set ups, lest you get very bored. Still are awesome games though, just experiment!
I don't understand why this is on greenlight.
Me neither.

You have to wonder if some publishers are intentionally putting games on Greenlight to build hype.

When the first two games were released on Steam was when I knew that Steam as a polished, curated storefront had died.

So I got around to looking into the Eat My Dust Racing Bundle that Motoki mentioned earlier today.

Well it's better than I was expecting, it's all recent indie games (in the last year or so).

Little Racers STREET seems to be well liked, it's also a $1 title on XBLIG. It was free on Desura for three weeks in December apparently. One review. Supports a controller.

Monster minis seems to be well liked, which surprises me as I was guessing it was the weakest game in the bundle from the videos. Review, review. Supports a controller.

Headlong looks interesting. It is the work of one man. It has a wide variety of cars, including semis. I can't find reviews on it, 6.6 on 10 reviews on Desura. I'm not sure if it supports a controller (I'd guess not.) It's also on the Mac App Store.
I grabbed a dead island copy. Setted an alarm on my phone. The Raptr web is really awful on a phone. Did almost the same thing, and had the same experience as someone else where clicking on "claim" didn't appear to do anything.

So I will now waltz over to the trading thread and jack up my asking price on this freebie.

I'm still mad that Raptr doesn't count Killing Floor as a zombie FPS. That's the only zombie FPS I have >.> No free Dead Island GOTY for me because Raptr counts BF3 as a zombie FPS
I agree that omitting Killing Floor is a huge oversight, but I think we've been through enough of these Raptr giveaways at this point that to expect them to last more than a couple of minutes is kind of crazy.
Well to be clear I'm more upset about the title choices.

Further discussion of spoilers:
The end of the game has two obstacles to overcome, Purple Tentacle and the Meteor itself, and most of the kids grant you an extra option for one of the two.

The two musicians give you identical means of recruiting Green Tentacle to remove Purple.
The photographer allows to to recruit Ed for the same.
The writer gives you an option to overcome the Meteor (by talking it out of world domination).
Bernard allows to to overcome BOTH obstacles by calling the police on the Meteor and then using their dropped badge to get past Purple Tentacle.
Jeff is the only kid aside from Dave who doesn't factor at all in the final obstacles. His ability to fix the phone gives you a way to distract Edna when going through her room is necessary.

The different ways to overcome the meteor give you different endings. Also, should you kill off any of the kids (which is hard to do by accident), this will generally be referenced in the ending as well.

I loved Maniac Mansion on the NES but I don't recall it in as much detail as you guys. I do remember being able to finish it in one sitting, and finding a glitch that I wanted to submit to a gaming magazine:
you could safely scoot past Nurse Edna in her(?) bedroom by hitting clicking on the ladder and then hitting pause—character would continue on while she was frozen.
You do realize you can change the attack scheme to be controlled by the keyboard instead of the mouse, right? Pretty sure you just tick a box in the options and it changes.
Tried it... Still doesn't do it for me. You essentially trade off mouse look for w/a/s/d+LMB for attacks which limits your movement as well. I mean why would you bind either mouse look or movement to attacks, shit doesn't make sense.

edit: there is a workaround, though it requires autohotkey...

So what's the problem with Dreamfall Chapters being put on there? What makes it less worthy to be put on Greenlight than other games that are on there? (In that, there are plenty of in-development games that no one knows is any good.)

The version I played in DoTT had a similar glitch. Clicking New Kid and then clicking a door would teleport you through that door. Useful to get by Edna if you were fast.

The problem is that it shouldn't have to go through greenlight at all. It should be an instant Steam store inclusion. People have been sobbing for a sequel for years.
Does anyone know how to make steamgift picture links? "*your link*/signature.png" is the location of the image for every giveaway, thanks to their algorithm. Add that to any giveaway and you get the image for it, then you hyperlink your url. So something like this:

Thanks for the giveaway, by the way. It's funny how it's still listed as a Steam group and we can still give away games, even though the CAG group was removed. Oh well, no more inviting members who aren't CAGs, at least. Get feeling better soon!
