Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V6! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

With the V6 Thread, we're trying a slight formatting change. We used to list every possible Steam deal in the OP, but they change too frequently for anyone to keep up with (even in the Wiki format). So now, we'll leave regular minor sales out of the OP. This post will keep track of major sales (Winter sale, etc.), Steam deals available through other sellers (like Amazon), Preorder deals, and Group Buys.

I would still greatly appreciate help from you folks at home in keeping this smaller-scale OP up-to-date. This is a Wiki post so anyone can contribute. Wiki instructions:
Thanks for your help! If you notice a sale has ended, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see something does need to be added, then kindly add it to the list.

Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.

Steam Sales - Updated 1/22

CAG Threads Featuring Steam Games on Sale Elsewhere - Updated 1/9

Preorder Deals - Updated 1/10
Group Buy Deals - Updated 1/9/13

Free Stuff - List needs updating with F2P games!
There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

Steam's explanation and list of Steam-activatable keys

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card. The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

My problem with Greenlight is once you let games like Bad Rats and Revelations 2012 through the door it's kind of hard to justify making anyone else go through a selective approval process.

I mean you can argue that Bad Rats got in because Strategy First had a relationship with Valve and a number of other games on there already but Revelations 2012 is straight up no apologies indie and not even artsy fartsy award winning indie.

Don't get me wrong, it's a craptastic trainwreck and I like it for what it is, but really I wonder who slept with someone at Valve to get that game in.

It's kind of like a museum making a big point of being ultra selective about which pieces they will allow in and meanwhile they have a huge turd on display.

Yeah. I guess my trash is you guys treasure. I will say the Revelations devs didn't have to beg like little orphan annies to get people to fund their game. Maybe that's why they didn't need greenlight.
"*your link*/signature.png" is the location of the image for every giveaway, thanks to their algorithm. Add that to any giveaway and you get the image for it, then you hyperlink your url. So something like this:

Thanks for the giveaway, by the way. It's funny how it's still listed as a Steam group and we can still give away games, even though the CAG group was removed. Oh well, no more inviting members who aren't CAGs, at least. Get feeling better soon!
CheapyD got the group reinstated So it should all be back to normal.

Hm. In fairness, unless I'm completely mistaken, both of those were out (certainly BR) years before Greenlight was even a twinkle in Gabe's eye. I don't think it's a terrible idea, but there are certain things we've alluded to before like the Drakensang titles and other games that either have a pre-existing following or actually have prequels already on Steam that Valve should just add.
Yeah, I can understand that sentiment. Then again, I feel that way about most games. The last chunk of King's Bounty: The Legend hasn't been too bad, since I put time into setting up a very strong, renewable army (full demons).

King's Bounty pretty much requires you to experiment with army set ups, lest you get very bored. Still are awesome games though, just experiment!
I guess I'm in the minority but I got shut down playing the Legend because my armies weren't powerful enough to advance. That may be one reason that I own but have been reluctant to start any of the sequels--I put a lot of time into The Legend but apparently I was doing it wrong.

I haven't played Legend but I did play Armoured Princess and I hit a similar problem. In that case my talent tree was a mess and I'd picked a Paladin class which wasn't the easiest to play with. After 20-30 hours (where does the time go?!) I called it quits and started again as a Mage (I think) which was SO much easier.

Given that some army resources are limited it's quite easy to paint yourself into a corner and struggle for any kind of progress.
Does anyone know how to make steamgift picture links? A quick googling hasn't really turned anything up, and I'm a little bit sick right now to be putting too much effort into it. I grabbed a Dead Island key from raptr for those of you who couldn't make it, so I'm giving it away for the CAG group. Here's the link: http://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/7Sjya/dead-island
Just a note but SteamGifts has taken a hard stance against giving away Dead Island keys in the past and I believe they have stated that the Raptr giveaway does not change their stance. Just thought people might want to know if they're worried about a potential ban or punishment.

I didn't mention the 'D' word again because I didn't want to set Elder Pee off. ;)

It's true the BR has long been in. Revelations is a fairly recent release but still before Greenlight. There have been, in my opinion, some questionable releases that got a get out of jail free card even after Greenlight, like Et'te'toilet or whatever that hell that artsy fartsy stand on a virtual beach and pine over your multiplayer pretend internet boyfriend/girlfriend in another star system game is called.

But who can figure out the ways of Valve? Not I.

To add to that a bit, for those outside NA who found the keys were region locked and thought to give them away, just wait and try them again later. Raptr said via twitter yesterday that they were aware of the problem and were working on it.

That's pretty much exactly what happened to me in The Legend; I spent 30-40 hours in a playthrough and then I was stuck because my armies weren't powerful enough to take on any of the creeps or enemies that I ran across. It was only after this that I understood that you basically can't lose any tactical battles or you won't have sufficient resources to keep going.

I'm pretty sure this is connected to the issue that cropped up much earlier where folks were buying physical copies from various retailers (Newegg comes to mind) and finding that the keys had apparently been activated. Nothing to do with Raptr, but I expect you could still have a problem with SG admins.
The problem is that it shouldn't have to go through greenlight at all. It should be an instant Steam store inclusion. People have been sobbing for a sequel for years.
To be fair, while the same people are making it, it is a brand new company making the game. I also expect the Greenlight process for them to be pretty perfunctory. I would expect highly successful Kickstarters to have little problem getting through the Greenlight process.

Course, there are many already made games that probably should be on Steam, but for some reason are in limbo on Greenlight. (I don't get why games like Gray Matter and Venetica aren't on Steam.)

On the contrary, when the group came back it was changed to a public group, meaning you don't even need an invite to get in. I don't really agree with that decision, but it isn't my group so whatever.

Touche!

Still, I avoid them when buying hardware. I prefer clipping box tops and soup can labels to send away for secret decoder rings.

Just a quick notification that people who signed up for the Hidden Path Entertainment newsletter are receiving Steam keys for Defense Grid Community Levels DLC today. I don't remember ever signing up for that, but an email came from Hidden Path Community and people should check just in case.

I wasn't too fussed about missing out on a DI key when I later read that it was supposedly region-locked. Now after hearing about this change, I was chuffed to bits to be handed a spare key by thread regular warreni.

CAG generosity, right there. Great start to the weekend :)

p.s. can somebody let me know when it's ok to use the code? Don't want to invalidate it or anything

Edit: they've been sorted, it's activated and in my library. Hooray!

Can't it have been someone high up at Steam feeling the same way about it?

Of course, but then in my mind it becomes hard to justify letting in a game that's intentionally crappy while holding others back both before and after the whole Greenlight process.

Then again, my name is not Gabe Newell and I don't really have a say.

So I searched around and found the source where you sign up for that. There's apparently 1 day left to do it.

http://www.hiddenpath.com/containment-contest/#form

The contest ended at midnight. The counter's actually showing -1 days left, which seems like terrible counter design.

I still entered in my email address, but I'm not holding my breath on getting the DLC.
Boot up Defense Grid, go to community and you can enter your email there. I got the key in under 30 seconds.
Yup. I did a search on that DLC name and found info stating that it was available for signing up in-game under "community." I found no mention of a deadline.

Aaaand mine showed up.

Hmm... that's the thing. I started off with a pretty typical human army. Very quickly, I found the game was getting harder and I was losing a mass amount of troops every battle, even if I won. I played around with animals mixed in, but still didn't do much better (especially once I hit the missions where you're fighting werewolf elves). I switched to a full undead army and suddenly had massive success.

Unfortunately, places where you can buy undead troops are few and far between, and even the graveyard runs out of stock of good undeads (like vampires) very quickly. The game is set up so that you'll build an army, run out of troops to buy for that army type, and be forced to move on to a new army.

After undead was no longer an option, I switched to thieves since I had a thief wife, and used them all through the Freedom Islands (I think that's what the place was called). When I ran out of thieves, I switched to a dwarven army (had massive success with these guys), then an elven army (once I got to the elven area, did very well with these guys too), and finally I'm using a full demon army, with a demon wife. At this point my army is pretty much unstoppable, and I had zero problems with difficulty last time I played.

Really, the game isn't very easy. It takes careful forethought to set up your army, your equipment, and even your wife and children to bolster your strengths and weaknesses. You really can't get complacent, you HAVE to get over the sentiment towards your army, throw them all away, and start fresh, over and over.
^Thanks for that, worked for me.

Also, Postal 3 is 75% off ($3.75) at GameFly, activates on Steam. So, that's something.
Oooh, awesome, heard it's bad... even for a postal game, but that's why I play them.

For as many bundles as it's been in, you wouldn't expect the game to be that spectacular. Honestly, it's one of the few games in my life that I've sunk over a hundred hours into doing EVERYTHING (and I still haven't beaten the first game), with another few hundred to come.

That's just a myth, probably perpetuated by shows like Xena. The real Amazons weren't all women, they were just horseback riding nomadic tribes skilled in archery that happened to have their women also ride and fight. The rest the Greeks just blew way out of proportion because they were so shocked at women warriors.

Bad thoughts, bad thoughts....

Or I could use a man to get her pregnant, then take him out of the picture, permanently, and run a charade claiming it was due to divine favor, thus cementing my link with the gods.

FYI, the official RWS website no longer sells Postal 3 and their forum section for Postal 3 calls it "Akella's POSTAL Spin off! Here for discussion about the Akella's dodgy POSTAL spin off (Also known as POSTAL III in Russia and on Steam)."

So even the Postal guys hate it.
