I've been running with this one for a long time now. It's brutal on FPS, but it's gorgeous, and you can just flip things off in the settings (like SSAO, post processing, etc) until it's running well. Realize you probably aren't going to get much more than 40FPS outdoors regardless of your settings (unless you have a brand spanking new GPU, maybe), but I'd say it's worth it.
I'd been using Kountervibe (or K ENB can't remember which, both by the same guy) but they've apparently been removed. That happens a lot in the ES modding community so if you find a mod you like back up the install files! (that's more meant for Ashes).

For reference, this is what my setup looked like with the K ENB and STEP and a bunch of other mods that took forever to get working just how I wanted. Admittedly it's a bit heavy on the bloom but by then I was tired and just chalked it up to snow reflecting.

Then I reinstalled windows and had to reinstall the game but dumped a backed up modded directory on top but now my tree LoDs are blocky, there's huge jungle grass growing out of the roads and piers etc and a bunch of crap is messed up and I don't have the energy to deal with it so I just go play Big Fish games (seriously, I kind of enjoyed Nightmares from the Deep recently even though it was cheesy, but I digress...)

I'm tempted to start a High Elf* Mage in Skyrim... is there any reason I don't hear people talking about mages in skyrim?

*yeah, kinda fugly... but the racials look nice. I'd say my runner up is a Breton. (Honestly, I'm partial to the Nords but their racials are a poor match.)
For some reason I never play a mage, but then ES games you can kind of be a jack of all trades and do everything and join every guild etc. I usually dabble in a bit but don't tailor my character to it.

Oh and lore wise mages and especially high elves aren't really that welcome in Skyrim since a group of high elf magic users are elitist racist invaders in that time period. Just sayin'.

This entire conversation goes to show that for every naysayer who says Skyrim sucks, there's 10 mods to fix every complaint in 10 different ways.

You know, I love looking at screenshots with DoF goin' on, but I just can't play the game with it. I tried Gopher's Dynavision and thought it was nice, but I kept reducing it's usage.

And if we're posting up screenshots, here's my Skyrim Tomb Raider with no post processing.

The best part about the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games is the modding.

The worst part about the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games is the modding.

When there aren't any mods for a game, you can just start it up and play it as-is. When there are that many mods for a game, you can spend more time modding than playing....

Sometimes I feel like I should just play it on a console and just deal with it flaws and all where I don't have a choice. Whenever I play the ES game on the PC I see this, that and the other thing wrong with it and I know there's a mod for it or hell if there isn't I may even make one and so I end up spending days trying to get it just so to how I want it.

After much time and effort I'll get it just Goldilocks perfect. And it's great. For a while. Then something happens. I added one mod that screws everything else up, I end reinstalling windows, fate, the wind, whatever. Just a small gust blows the whole house of cards down so then I stop playing because I don't want to go through all the modding OCD all over again.

Then months will go by and I'll think 'Hey maybe I should play Elder Scrolls again'. Then I remember all the modding bullshit and that I won't be satisfied with the vanilla game so I just pass and play something else, or more likely, nothing.

Same here. The FPS hit sucks and it just bugs my eyes.

Someone spilled her Kool-Aid, I see.

I think this is one of the most gorgeous pics I've taken in Skyrim. Here's another for good measure. And why not one more?

I tend to dislike DoF in video games because it's used very hamfistedly. As a photographer, DoF (and degree) is either a creative choice used to separate object and setting, or a result of needing to shoot wide open (low light). The former is well used by motion picture cameramen.

I'm feeling this right now... maybe I just should have stuck with SkyUI and actually played it... (I literally have like 30 minutes of actual play time)

That's very similar to what happened to me with Fallout New Vegas. I spent around 20 hours modding it, only to end up with something that wouldn't run at over 30fps and I couldn't figure out why (so gave up and played something else.)

I normally don't do content-mod games until after my 1st play-through (of at least the main quest) is actually done.

Unless a game is horribly broken (think like White Gold or The Precursors), I might do otherwise.

Only mods I might use on a 1st play-through are Inventory, UI, and things of that sort.

Seriously - playing Oblivion w/out some sort of version of DarnUI (or any other UI mod, IMHO) is NOT a good idea on the PC-version, IMHO. ;)

I like the mix of DarkDarkUI, myself.

For Bethesda games, modding content in begins for me AFTER the game's done w/ completely - that's when there's no more official expansions/DLC's; no more official patches; no more anything official coming for it from Bethesda.

When it comes to modding it's not what you need but what's possible.. And the possibilities are endless.

Want to make your game look beautiful? There's a mod for that.

Want to make your game harder/easier? There's a mod for that.

Wnat more schlongs in your game? There's a mod for that. (NSFW)

The only thing you need for New Vegas is the Unnoficial Patch and Project Nevada.
Ummmmm...but what about some kind of UI mods for FO3 and New Vegas?

I think that game could use some smaller fonts, compared to what the stock-game gives you.

Hey now, that's actually an excellent mod. They just tweaked the settings to make em waaay too big.

Just wanted t chime in that I think the Capcom DLC sale is a brilliant tactic. Though I won't be buying anything, I'd like to see how well they do and whether other publishers follow suit in the future.

Walgreens does too.
I get a Walgreen's gift card at Christmas every year from an out-of-state relative. I usually end up applying them to one thing, but now I'll get to decide between condoms or Steam wallet. Decisions, decisions...

Aww man you ruined my dream of 4 Rambos running around at the same time. ;)
You have the best / strangest / most disturbing dreams...

If Elder Scrolls ever gets a (fan made) film, I really hope that there is a scene where a guy in his underroos hops around in a crouched position shooting arrows everywhere, and NO ONE will be able to tell where he is
"Must be my imagination..."

I finally got around to playing the third game mode on DI Epidemic and had a great time.  This one basically played like I guess a raid in an MMO?  It was just one team and you went around fighting waves of zombies and securing supply posts and then fighting bosses until  you got the the main boss, who was pretty difficult.  I died a ton, but luckily there was a pro on our team who did most of the damage.  I'll give the team vs team vs team mode again, but this is shaping up to be a nice game for me.

Four in February update: I completed my in-progress Bioshock playthrough on Feb 4th and then started Bioshock 2. Finished Bioshock 2 tonight so I'm already half way. I'd intended to only wrap up in-progress games, considering I just played an entire game start to finish I'm doing pretty great!

Next up: Assassin's Creed Liberation

u guys should know survival pack is basically three pack on top of it in all dlc bundle just saying for lp3 so dont waste it more than 1.24

Four in February update: Completed Metro Last Light. Pacing was way too slow and almost nothing happens story-wise in the game. Way too much of "I escaped from these guys! Now let me escape some more, go above ground, go back under and escape, then above and escape, then back down and finish the game". I also wasn't happy that I went through the entire game without killing anybody and still got the "bad" ending and didn't get my trophy for not killing anybody. Ugh . . .

Overall I didn't like the game. I could go into more detail but why bother?

That leaves one last game. In the middle of my Mass Effect 2 playthrough on PS3 but I don't know if I want to finish that or jump into something else. I'm really tempted to download and play the entire pack of American McGee's Grimm.

eh...

Only the ranger from the old D&D cartoon (and those armed with similar bows/crossbows) should get away with arrows/bolts unequiping...

Then again, one of my "it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things but if they did away with it it would be so cool" complaints about in video games is equipment that disappears when not in use. (ME did an outstanding job of avoiding this.)

Anyhow, I'm sure they've been bombarded with questions but I did send Red Hook a question about final price on steam for the game (Darkest Dungeon) via my Kickstarter account. if I get a response I'll be sure to post it here.
As promised... Posting. (I got a response. :D )

Hi >REDACTED<,

Thanks for the support and the kind words!

We aren't ready to announce final MSRP - it depends on a variety of factors and what the market looks like in another 6-12 months (things change fast).

I will say that we are leaning towards $20, but this is not a final figure. In general, we are trying to provide value-added rewards to all of the tiers as opposed to a huge discount. But the base $15 tier is definitely a discount over the expected MSRP.

--Tyler

First, I'm happy to see a response... Nothing worse than sending a question and not even getting a reply...

Second, I think its a smart choice not to lock themselves into a price point... 1) The way their kickstarter is going its likely going to be more than a 20 dollar game... 2) Their above reason is pretty damn sound also.

Third, if I had to make a guess I think the 15 dollar deal now will not be the best deal in town around release... So I guess I'll wait, and see how the stretch goals go.

I think somebody (maybe you or Idiot) said something earlier about Skyrim being an FPS RPG and that makes sense to me. This type of combat is not conducive to console play (at least not for me).

I like the second one.

Except that I already play it with a controller anyway and at times I've played it on my living room TV set via a long HDMI cable so functionally I play it like a console anyway, just with a shit ton of mods.

Morrowind and it's inventory system are clearly more oriented for a keyboard and mouse but I feel like from Oblivion on and even more so for Skyrim they've designed with the Xbox 360 in mind.

Not really looking to start up the tired kb&m vs controller argument again, but I also think it's kind of hard to argue that the last couple of ES games weren't consolized to some degree, especially when compared to the earlier ones.

FWIW I also found Dragon's Dogma (yes every once in a while I sneak off and hide amongst the peasants) to be very Skyrim-esque in my opinion.

Spent my first 100ish hours in Skyrim using a controller, partly because I was too lazy to disconnect the damn thing every time I started it up.  Combat felt less satisfying when I transitioned to a mouse, the triggers work quite well with the left/right hand swing and block mechanics.  But when I rerolled as an archer, I couldn't hit a damn thing using the sticks to aim

I'm assuming there are mods for Skyrim PC that simulate what the Kinect does? I was thinking about getting it for PC for the big dingus mod, but I can't go back to pre Kinect times having to pause combat just to switch weapons.

I'm playing Skyrim with KB/M. I gave the controller a couple quick tries, but I could not figure how to access my bleeding inventory with the controller.  Also it's one of those either/or games (I have to disconnect the controller to swap back to KB/M).

How can I access my inventory using the controller?  (I've googled, but no dice.)

There exists a Kinect PC but Microsoft promoted it about as well as GFWL, actually even less. I don't know of anything it works with. Maybe home brew stuff?

I've heard of people hacking 360 Kinects to do this that and the other thing, some of which was on the PC, but I wouldn't begin to know how to do something like that.

Also, I'm sorry but I feel the need to say 'You danged console kids and yer fancy keynecks. GTFO my lawn!' :oldman:

B button brings up a menu. You can assign favorites to quick select with the d-pad.

edit: And for what it's worth, I recently imported my save from 360 to PC after about 18 months of not playing. Despite having already put 50 hours into the game, it took me awhile to remember how to access the inventory. Who assigns a menu to B?

I don't know why but with Skyrim on the controller I seem to instinctively know where stuff is and what buttons do but if you ask me to explain it I draw I blank. It's one of those things I actually need to sit down and do. *shrug*

Microsoft (deliberately) stuffed up the PC version of the Kinect (as well as charging a lot more for it). All the real hacking happens with the 360-Kinect. Common in the cheapass (not that cheap, but self-funded) robotics community... I have a hacked one working on linux/ROS.

Thanks. I'll look into that.
