Free stuff:
There are quite a few free games (mostly Free to Play) and mods available via the Steam platform, a comprehensive list of which can be found in this thread on the SPUF.

Alan Wake was a personal favorite of mine. I really suggest giving it a go. If you do then really dive into the story as there is more there than some really think. I had fun reading through the pages, the extras, watching the Bright Falls series, etc.

"Update (2/15/14): Wow! So the popularity of this offer has really exploded, which is great! Except for the part where we ran out of Steam keys… (We also suspect we’ve had some non-Mac gamers taking advantage, too, so blame them for the temporary hiccup. ; ) ...
I have an iPhone, does that count?

No?

Re: Alan Wake

The game has great atmosphere and I suggest playing it this time of year when you can maximize how much you play in a dark room. It's not scary or anything, but it takes place almost entirely outdoors at night.
Yes! I pulled it from my backlog just recently and am at the end of Episode 3. Really having fun with it.

Ok, for my next game, should I play...

1) Alan Wake

2) Far Cry 3

3) Max Payne (1)

4) Metro 2033

or

5) Psychonauts
Max Payne 1. Reasoning...it's the oldest and it ain't getting any younger and you owe it to yourself to play it. A lot of gameplay mechanics were lifted from that title.

Hmm under 9 hours on HLTB.... I know it's one of those games I *should* play, and being ~10 hours I just might.

....after you pry Skyrim out of my freezing cold paws.

Well, I am primarily a Mac user. ...and I do all my high end gaming on a PC.

Far Cry 3 is pretty long fyi. I had to take a break from it. (Easy though since there's no complicated story or mechanics to forget.) I haven't played the rest. (Well dabbled with MP1 on my tablet a ltitle.)
For me, Far Cry 3 is to open-world FPS's what Skyrim is to open-world RPG's and what TDU2 is to open-world racers.

All 3 of them, have a formula to me:

All are games I can play for whatever my fill is to where I've had enough of it;

and once I get tired of the game, just drop it;

play something else for a while;

then when I get the hankering, go back to it.

All of those open-world games are so big, have so much content, and just like Ashes said they have stories that aren't super-duper spectacular - they are are just easy to just drop whenever and easy to pick-up whenever you go back to.

EDIT:

http://store.steampowered.com/tag/en/2deep4u/

Keep tagging, people! 2deep4u shall live!
I need to find a game to tag "MysterD absolutely hates this game."

But, I'd guess - yeah, I don't think that'd be a tag used very often, though. ;)

EDIT 2:

1) Alan Wake

2) Far Cry 3

3) Max Payne (1)

4) Metro 2033

or

5) Psychonauts
Max Payne 1 - It's the oldest.

Probably should play that before you even think of touching Alan Wake - since, you know, Remedy made both Max Payne + Alan Wake; and since Alan Wake is a much modern-looking third-person shooter.

We’ve now added more keys, but as all good things must come to end, we’ve capped the deal at 500 more uses as of 3:45pm CST today. [...] Anyone that has already completed their order will still receive their free key; just keep an eye on your inbox!
I still haven't received mine....

I usually don't do this, and if nothing else I pride myself on at least trying to like all games, but Alan Wake is easily one of the most overrated games of the last few years. It's a horror game that's not scary. It's a game about a writer, with crap writing. (Sorry, I find Stephen King's style boring and Alan Wake's blatant, self-acknowledged aping of it even more so. "I entered the room. A thing was on the table.") And perhaps worst of all, despite its aspirations toward a sophisticated narrative, it's still just another dang third-person shooter.

Just had to get that off my chest. Not hating, I legitimately dislike the game, but I take no joy in doing so. Most people love it so my little rant shouldn't stop anyone from giving it a shot (not that I would expect it to.)

I agree and disagree.

I mostly hated Alan's awful acting - at the start of the game. But by the final parts he finally got the hang of acting. :p It's too bad they never got his facial expressions right.

I'm truly sorry you feel that way. I went into the game not knowing what to expect, and it ended up being my favorite game of this entire generation. The amazing soundtrack was a plus too. Introduced me to Poets of the Fall, which is now one of my favorite bands.

the market and all community pages on steam have switched to a different language for me [Swedish?] and I can't figure out why or how to change it. Only the browser seems to be affected, the client itself is still all in English. Has this happened to anyone else?

Usually I take this link, store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey?l=russian

and just replace russian with english, so it becomes store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey?l=english

And then everything is back to english for me.

Click the down arrow by that "sprak" at the top right and there should be an English option. Happens to me quite often.

That usually happens when you've clicked through to a community/market page from search results. Quite a few results will be for the change-the-language version of the page (will end in something like ?l=italian).

I was searching for CSGO skins through this site, I guess that's what caused the language to change somehow, if it happens again I'll know how to fix it.

My First Foray For a Four for February!

So far:

1) Call of Juarez - Finally Finished

Next up... Finish Friggin Fatman Farkham Asylum
2) Windosill ... a really entertaining and interesting surreal puzzler. If you haven't played it yet you should do so. DON'T CHEAT AND LOOK FOR A WALKTHROUGH. It's a short enough game as it is. =D

Less than 14 minutes? I think "little" is a gross overstatement.
it takes longer to get cards then it does to beat it
To be fair, I've heard others taking 30mins-1hour to beat it but it does have a speedrun mode so there is replayability if that's your thing.

Also 4 for Februrary update:

Pokemon X - Completed

Assassin's Creed: Liberation - Completed

Love - Completed

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - In progress

I went into the game only knowing that it was very highly regarded. I enjoy Stephen King, so I immediately got that vibe and enjoyed it. For the first chapter or so.

For me, the story did not hold up. In fact, I felt that it got quite silly. I also felt like the game began to repeat itself very early on and by the last half I just started wishing it was over.

Like you, I hate saying that because I know lots of people love it. I really wanted to like it, but it just fell apart.

What if you're the kind of person who cheats at solitaire?

crap, ive been trying to finish Call of Juarez Bound in Blood for over 2 years now. i think i play it for an hour once every few months. What sucks worse is that when I started playing the game I thought it was the first in the series. So if I ever finish it, im gonna have to go backwards and play Call of Juarez, and THEN allow myself to play gunzlinger. (CoJ 3 doesnt exist as far as Im concerned)

So I've been debating on getting the Witcher games since they've gone on sale. I have a ton of RPGs already in my backlog (and I've barely touched Skyrim) but this game looks interesting. Very action-oriented from what I can tell, and controller support is a plus. Any thoughts on this? And my OCD usually tells me to play the first game in a series first, which isn't controller-supported but I'll put up with it if it's good enough. How does this game compare to the other gajillion RPGs out now?

The Witcher 2 is very good, and I'd definitely pick it up if I didn't already own it on GOG. The Witcher 1 isn't as polished, and a couple of my friends who liked the second one hated it... but it's worth a shot if you want to get the complete story.

I have Gunslinger too but not Bound in Blood. Bound in Blood was a prequel to Call of Juarez from what I've read so you would be playing them in timeline order.

I'll have to play Bound in Blood before Gunslinger though. Hoping for at least a 50% off sale before I pick it up.

Witcher 2 IMHO is one of the best RPGs of the last gen. The visuals are great, the fighting is excellent, and the story telling is flawless. You can't go wrong especially for the price. I also enjoyed the Witcher 1 and it helps to play the first to understand the story better. The good thing about Witcher 2 though is it has a comic book style intro that briefly explains what happened in Wither 1 if you are really turned off by the controller issue.

Finally got the order confirmation email for my Borderlands 2 DLC code from GameAgent. No actual code in the email and looking up the order doesn't yield a code either. It does have a small section that says the code is processing though so I guess I just need to wait more.

I actually haven't gotten to Witcher 2 yet as I got about 90% of the way through the first one then got distracted. But I loved it. It's not without flaws, but something about its atmosphere drew me in in a way few games do. I particularly loved the music. I'm looking forward to finishing it some day and moving on to the second one.
