Thrift Store Thread 2012
I picked up a copy of Left for Dead for 5.99 which I promptly flipped to gamestop for 22.40 in credit after bonuses.
Nice flip!

Awesome finds today... mostly anyways.
Went to a Goodwill I frequent and it looked like someone really pissed off his wife or mother or something... There were dozens of boxed Star Wars and Star Trek figures. I don't know anything about them, scanned a few with my phone and they weren't worth much, less than or equal to what they were priced (bout $6 a piece). Noticed they were mostly from early-mid 90s.

Then I was checking out the CDs and happen to see a big stack of boxed PC games.
On the top,

X-Com UFO Defense
:hot:
The rest were

Falcon 3.0
MS Flight Simulator (a DOS version)
Defender of the Empire expansion for Tie Fighter
ACES of the Pacific

I did what I always do when I see boxed PC games, check the contents...
First one, just the manuals... :whistle2:k
Second, manuals... :whistle2:s
Third, manuals... :whistle2:x
Fourth, manuals... :censored:
Last one I had to check, X-Com, the one I desperately wanted to be complete... It was! The floppies were even still sealed in the plastic bag. :bouncy:
I still wanted the boxes to the other games, but not for $3 a piece as they were marked, so I went over, asked the cashier if I could talk to someone about it and she's just "I'll just give them to you for a $1".

So I got
X-COM UFO Defense $3
and the following boxes and manuals for $4 total.
Falcon 3.0
MS Flight Simulator (a DOS version)
Defender of the Empire expansion for Tie Fighter
ACES of the Pacific

All the boxes are fairly good condition too, most just have some shelf wear to them.

A few good finds the past two days.

At one GW that's pretty far out of the way that we hit when we are out there, it was looking like an overall bust. I went back through the aisles again and happen to see a dirty, beat-up cardboard box on the floor, next to an endcap. I opened the flaps on it, out of morbid curiosity, and wouldn't you believe it. A Logitech Driving Force GT :ps3:, with pedals, power cord and a few random extras priced for $5. Oddly enough, I had found a wheel-only GT a few weeks ago at my local GW for $16, and passed on it since the pedals were missing.

My other good find was at one of the semi-local GWs. An old Xbox, a little dusty, with cables for 3.99. I figured it would have had a drive problem or something wrong with it, but got it anyways since the labels were intact, bringing my total of OG Xboxes to 8 or 9 now. When I got home, I hooked it up and it works PERFECT. No sticky drive, no read problems at all. This is definitely the best working Xbox I've ever found in the wild.

Man its been slow at my Goodwills. Saw a nice 21 speed mountain bike the other day but it was still used and rusty in spots.....$65. Noone looking for a used bike at GW wants to spend $65! Saw the exact same one in better shape on some Craigslist when I looked it up on my phone.

Someone did pick up a boxed Kinect that was in the case upfront for $50. Maybe while ive been working more someone else is buying up the games.

It's been slow near me too lately although yesterday I found some good stuff.

Red N64 console with RAM pak for $10
Assassin's Creed II for xbox $2!!
Megaman III for gameboy for $5
Xbox 360 console (non-HDMI) with 120gb HDD, power and AV cable for $36 , the box has the E71 error and won't boot into the dashboard, the hard drive works great though. I/m not sure if this is an easy fix or not.

I have a new enemy. I knew her form garage sales, but 2 times now she crossed the line. She hovers over the carts of new stuff and now she started pulling video games (because she sees me buying them). She takes all of them and looks them up on her phone and puts back the ones she doesn't want anymore.

Had what was most likely the most interesting find today, and I had to convince myself to not get it. 'Twas an APC AR1000ABLK Netshelter Premium for server racks for $30. Drawbacks: No keys for the locks, but was left unlocked, absolutely huge and this was far from home so I'd have to drive back to get it with my Jeep unloaded, and I have no real use for it. I actually had an idea, on my way home, of using it to store all of my old school consoles and mount a monitor in/on it. But going back to the issue of size, I have nowhere to put it in my house at the moment.

I may go back for it tomorrow... maybe.... I don't know...

I checked the lone nearby Goodwill yesterday and found a few games in the case. Some Genesis sports title for $1-2, a handful of PSP games and a lone PS3 game(Blazing Angels:Squadrons of WWII). Only problem was it's marked $14.99.:bomb:

A fellow CAG who lives in the area told me he had a chuckle at the $15 price tag on that when he picked up a $3 copy of Twilight Princess for Wii.

This is why I never go to GW, since they either never have any games or if they do they're much higher priced than they should be.

Little locally owned thrift I was passing by while out garage sale shopping this morning gave me a solid find:

Final Fantasy 8: 2.00
Crash Bandicoot Warped: 2.00
Romance of the Three Kingdoms VII (PS2): 2.00

Happy enough with these. All are complete and in awesome shape. They apparently price all of their games at 2.00 each. I will be back.

It seems to me that there would be much prettier ways to display old consoles with a monitor, but that's just me. Maybe I just see enough server racks at work, though.

So wait - she's your 'enemy' because she buys things that you want? That's a pretty low threshold.

As I was leaving Goodwill, saw someone buy a Super Mario Bros for the 3DS for $4 and a bag of gameboy stuff for $24. I couldn't really tell what was inside but I did make out a purple gb color, an old school gb, pokemon yellow and some other stuff. Kicking myself for missing it. ><

Funny to me to see a 5 copies of Sims 3 pets for DS and a steel driver. haha.

Thought today might be a good day; I had a dream where I hit a major find of ps1 games. Hopefully, that's tomorrow.

I have the same dream every night, but with the Majora's Mask Adventure Set. The ultimate gem of an N64 collector.

I usually have those dreams once a month but it's just me at a game store. Haha. But it has been happening a lot lately. Something is bound to happen.

ok i've been to a few gw in my surrounding area and found crapola at westchester and riverside. I'm kinda new to this so being from IL where is a good place to start?

After reading a few days of backlog...
nope, ny, long island to be alittle more specific
My competition has shown himself!

Oh you know we aren't the only ones on the island looking for games, I know of a few more. It's pretty competitive here on the island :)
slowdive has a ton of enemies it seems.
1) She is taking all of them and looking them up (you are not supposed to hoard)
2) She takes things from the cart before the employee stops moving. (Items are supposed to be shelved before they are fair game)
3) She is buying things she is not interested in because she sees me buying them
4) There is a certain level of respect in my area...The things she is doing go against the grain.

Now I walk around with my items covered. I don't need to educate the amateurs.

I'm on the Island and have pretty much given up on going to thrift stores. It seems there is a ton of competition, from CAG and beyond. Now the only time I'll really go to thrift stores is during the school year since theres a thrift store about 5 mins from my school, something to do during my break between classes.

I visit one frequently because it's literally about 2 minutes from my house. I've definitely slowed down though now that I am working again. When I was unemployed, had all the time in the world to check out thrift stores.

Thats what happened to me when I was freshly canned. Now that I'm starting to run on fumes, I don't even want to go and potentially buy stuff I don't need, or just find nothing and waste gas.

I got laid off 3 days after christmas, but unemployment definitely helped me stay afloat bills wise, until I did find another job. That and my savings, gave me alittle bit more room to check out things while I waited to get another job.
I have a feeling the 3 of us all visit the same 2 Savers
considering I think their are only 3 on the island, and only 2 are close to each other, I'd say you are probably correct.

I'm from LI but nowhere near those Savers locations. I do know of a couple Salvation Army, Goodwill, and Amvets stores where I've had decent finds occasionally, but for the most part they aren't worth the gas money.
I don't even know where the third is, lol.
according to google west hempstead, way to far for me to ever visit

smh. All I can say is welcome to the big leagues.
smh. All I can say is welcome to the big leagues.
Please I've been doing this since most people on this board were born.;) I am taking my territory back, so I am personally making sure she doesn't find anything anymore. Eventually I will muscle her out completely.

___

I ran into a 20 year old guy at the thrift store who told me he is a professional picker. I was nice to him, but I found it funny. I didn't have the heart to tell him a picker 'picks' items from peoples homes, junkyards, etc.

I bought a 360 core for 4.99 a couple of days ago. 99% sure it won't work, but I thought I would try it anyway.

Hit our Relay for Life thrift store in town. Saw a little bin (shoebox) of games with GH: Aerosmith (360) on top, but there were cartridges under:

Stuff I passed on:
NES: Battletoads, Super Mario 2 ($1 ea)
Atari: misc. mostly, ($1-$5 ... Dunno why)
N64: Starfox, NFL Blitz, Mario 64, Forsaken 64 ($1-$2)

Grabbed for $3 total:
NES: RC Pro Am and Pinball
N64: Goldeneye

May go back and but all the other $1 carts next time...

You passed on Battletoads, Starfox 64 and Mario 64, but picked up those others?:whistle2:s

Battletoads: http://videogames.pricecharting.com/game/nes/battletoads
Super Mario 64: http://videogames.pricecharting.com/game/nintendo-64/super-mario-64
Starfox 64: http://videogames.pricecharting.com/game/nintendo-64/starfox-64

Still those were some good pickups on your part, but I know I woulda went for the valuable and name brand titles as well.

I concur my good sir.
RC Pro AM is a better game than battletoads
I disagree, I mean granted, they're both completely different games, but RC Pro AM starts repeating and doesn't have a true end, while Battletoads, despite it's unreasonably high difficulty, actually has an ending, and also contains a lot of variety.

I'm not here to defend my purchases, but I will.

The NES carts I passed on I already own.

The N64 carts I passed on I've owned at one time or another with the exception of Forsaken.

So, basically left them to help make someone else's day...

One of my thrifts had a surprise for me the other day. A sealed iSight webcam and a sealed 15 inch macbook pro battery!

I paid $22.50 each, but it was still a really solid deal IMO.

I stopped by a thrift store yesterday, and they were having a sale for 25% off all items. This was priced @ $5, so I paid $3.75.

Hold on to that College Hoops 2K8 until march/april when the tournament is going on, the price usually shoots up to about $50 for a used copy! :D
