Thrift Store Thread 2012

Found just a NES control deck at that same "thrift" store I found a boxed copy of Space Quest 1 a few months back.
$3, no wires or controllers or games in sight though. :(

Later went to a pawn shop and picked up a standard NES controller and a High Frequency Turbo controller for $3.50 each.
Only got the Turbo one cause I never saw it before.
Anyone use the High Frequency before? Wondering what the quality is like.

Thought about it but didnt bother going to the 2 further GWs cus I knew it would be just way overpriced stuff and a waste of gas. I went to the first one, $20 system only Dreamcast still on the shelf, not much else. Look in the glasscase and they had an Iron Maiden album marked "$24.99" which i did a double take too cus when does GW mark vinyl records $25?! Then I noticed it also said "As Is" and thats when I just walked right out the door thinking "GTFO of here!".

Did pickup Killer Instinct Gold cartridge at my closest GW for $3. Girl said "its the Nintendo guy". I was confused then remembered I was wearing my NES controller tshirt last time as well. I told her "had to get something, the one Goodwill looks everything up on Ebay. Not paying $25 for an old game." She said they look up glass stuff on Ebay and I said "for the love of God please stick with the $3-$4 games!". She laughed and said "ill throw in a good word to the manager for ya".

I finally had a halfway decent day today at the thrift stores in my area.

:xbox:-$5
:ps2:-$7
:dvd:Animated Clerks Uncensored series-$4
Game Guide: Super Mario Galaxy 2 softcover-$1

The Xbox was console only but I checked it before buying it and it's unopened. I have a third party controller and a universal composite & S-Video cable I can use with it. The PS2 console came with the composite cable and a generic power cable and still had a copy of SSX in it when I re-tested it at the store. The store had already checked it to make sure it worked, but I always recheck stuff that has power and video cables with it.

The Clerks series was from a Salvation Army and my last thrift I hit for the day. I debated it for a while and put it back behind the counter, was kinda hoping it was gone before I went back to the front to grab it again. Only problem is that the one clasp on the dual case it came in is broken so the case doesn't close fully. Oh well.

Last but not least, the SMG2 guide was at the second thrift I hit for the day and is strangely missing any kind of price or barcode info on it. So since they normally go 80% off cover but couldn't find a price they settled on $.99 for it. So SCORE there.:D

I think this is my best day in a long, loing time hitting the thrift stores around here. Now I'm off to test the Xbox with my old Xbox systems' power cord. That's the only cable I need to find a dupe of so I can keep one with each system.

Returned to the Goodwill with the Xbox, Gamecube, and Dreamcast. The Xbox and Gamecube were gone, surprising since it was 20 and came with no wires. The Dreamcast (Wires/2 Controllers/2 VMUs) was still there and what you know, there was another one w/ 2 controllers and rumble pack. but no wires.

Among some other stuff was a bunch of 3rd Party Xbox controllers for 5.99 and the Wii wires for 6.99.

Picked up the complete Dreamcast for 15 with a 25% off coupon. Just tested it and everything works fine. Unfortunately, my first Dreamcast doesn't work anymore since it respond. It turns on and runs games fine but its a no go for the control slots. Something probably happened with the Controller Ports.

Alright. I just got done testing out the $5 Xbox on my tv and it powers on fine but shows no video and is giving me the infamous RROD that 360 users are so used to seeing.

Oh well. At least I only spent $5 on it. I'd have been pissed if I took a chance at a higher price.

I'll have to plug in the PS2 upstairs later on and try one of my older non Dual Shock/PS1 controllers with it to make sure the ports work on that cuz it has been opened and it's a very early model(30001).

Are you sure it's not the video cable? I thought the red light was a "no video cable" indicator...

Can be depending on which are lighting up.

http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=472553

One thing this guide didn't mention (that I saw during my brief skim), was four flashing red lights and the green center flashing is caused by an abrupt power surge.
Are you sure it's not the video cable? I thought the red light was a "no video cable" indicator...
The whole ring was flashing actually. I tried unplugging and replugging in the video cable and nada. Hopefully it ISN'T the cable though, as I used the cable from my own XBox to test it and that worked on my Xbox the last time I used it(which was admittedly a year or two ago).:whistle2:#

By the way, in case there was any confusion it's an original XBox I picked up for $5 and not a 360.

As for the Clerks Uncensored set, the back of the box says it's 130 minutes long.

Someone donated a Wii which they had with all the cables and 2 remotes and two nunchuks for 49.99. Not bad, but I have no need so passed. They also had some games though and I did grab Mario Party 8 for 12.99. Not great, but for a first party game, I'll take it. Bunch of other games but lots of kiddy junk so passed. Also grabbed a PS2 multi-tap type thing by Mad Catz I'd never seen before for $00.99.

http://www.amazon.com/MADCATZ-8208-4-PLAYER-Multi-port-Playstation-2/dp/B000083OIS

I'd never seen one before so figured what the heck for less than a dollar. I doubt I'll ever use it though, lol.

From my experience, on an Orginal Xbox 1, the flashing red light is indicative of a general hardware failure. Could be hard drive or an issue on the main board (kind of a catch-all error). I found an Xbox like this at a Thrift store and passed on it for this reason.

Oh well. It's not the first time I've spent $5 on something at a thrift store and not managed to get any use out of it. If for nothing, the fat PS2 I got for $7 ends up being a $12 PS2 once I factor in the cost of the bad Xbox.

Does the Xbox make any clicking noises or random rev up and then down sounds, or anything? That would tell you right away if it was the hard drive. Might try opening it up and checking out the insides (all you'd need is a Torx bit).

If you have an extra IDE Hard Drive laying around might format it to Xbox format (There is a boot program somewhere that does it , google it) and pop it in and see what happens. I guess it depends on how much time you want to stick into it.

If it worked I was just gonna use it as a spare DVD player and maybe to have a pretty much disposable Xbox to play my old games on. At the most I was gonna attempt to turn it into an XBMC and load up some media onto it or whatever.

I believe I actually did hear some clicking sounds when I powered it up with the video cable attached to it last night. So more than likely it is the HDD.

It has a Samsung DVD drive, just going by the pic here:
http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/xbox_dvd_version_comparison.htm

The one I have upstairs is a Philips I believe.

Unfortunately, if it's the HDD you're pretty much SOL, unless you can craft an EEPROM reader or go the hard-chip route. DVD drives are swappable, but the HDDs are locked to the board's EEPROM. The only way to get it without a reader is from the HDD itself, and if it's dead, well, you know. Hot-swapping might work, though.

I've dealt with Xboxes a lot in the past, and still have 5 or 6 just laying around. All of them work, except for the $3 one I picked up from a yard sale a few weeks ago. But fortunately, it's only the laser that's shot.

You might as well be speaking Klingon in this reply, since I understood Xbox and SOL out of all of it.

I knew that the HDD's were 'locked' to that specific Xbox and that I'd need a CD with the right files on it to be able to lock in a new HDD to the system if that's what's dead. But the rest....eh not so much. But for $5 if the system was actually working I was willing to take a chance on doing a lil experimenting with the system myself.;)

Like I said, I essentially have myself a $12 PS2 that'll double as a DVD player and that's assuming the controller/memory card ports on that aren't borked because the warranty seal is gone/cut on it. Speaking of which, I better test that completely before the days out. If both of these consoles are somehow fucked though, I'll likely toss em up on CL for $20 for both sans wires as fixer uppers for someone with more patience than me.:D

I understand that you probably won't mess with it but I used this when I modded mine (and many other threads at the site)

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/357863

If you are interested, and you let me know. I can look and see where I stored all of the files I used when I upped the hard drive in my original xbox to a 120GB. (Had to copy EEPROM and keep track of keys and junk) Some of it is finally starting to come back to me now.

Honestly for $5.. I'd probably just take it out to the backyard and office-space it.

I think you might have to do some really technical things in order to fix the Xbox. This guide says to make an eeprom reader, I'm not too sure. Google isn't really helping as all the results talk about the 360. Or just search Xbox eeprom reader.

Yeah, the HDD is locked to the board. The only to places to get the unlock "code" are from the HDD itself or from the board. There is software that can unlock the HDD and apply the "code" to a new HDD. But if the original HDD is f'ed, you aren't getting the code from there and would need to get it from the board. That's where the EEPROM reader comes in, which, IMHO, is just a frustrating waste of time.

You could always install a
mod chip
and that would take care of the HDD lockout, allowing you to install a replacement with little further hassle. But for an old Xbox, is it really worth it?

I've tried making an EEPROM reader a few times in the past and could never successfully get it to work.

If I recall correctly, I had to hook up the old hard drive out of my Xbox into a desktop and boot up using an EEPROM reader program to allow me to unlock the hard drive is get the password/code or whatever. I then hooked up the larger hard drive using the same utility and formatted/programmed and locked it to the key my Xbox needed.

If the hard drive is dead, then I agree you may just be SOL... of course you could try all the tricks of the trade that PC guys like myself do to fix clicking hard drives in the hopes that it will work for a microsecond to allow you to get any information (ie. Putting it in the freezer, smacking the hard drive until it works)

Don't get me wrong. I installed my own replacement HDD in at least one of my PC's and did other upgrades to one of my PC's, but those items were largely plug and play and didn't require me to run software(save for the HDD replacement) or try to find passwords or whatever for them.

This just seems like a major league pita unfortunately. Off to CL it goes then.

I LOVE my local GW. We didn't get a chance to stop up yesterday, and I'm glad we waited until today. Right after they closed last night, the manager put out a ton of DVDs, CDs, games. Today, I ended up with for $1/ea, all complete and mint/near mint:

  • Megaman Legends
  • Spyro Ripto's Rage
  • Crash Bash
  • Jurassic Park Warpath
  • Crash Bandicoot 2
  • Dino Crisis
  • Demolition Racer
  • Final Doom
  • Dave Mirra BMX Maximum Remix
  • Tai Fu
    ______________
  • Cabela's Big Game Hunter :wii:
  • Rayman 2 Revolution :ps2:
  • Luigi's Mansion
  • KOTOR 2 PC

I also almost picked up X Files Complete Collection, before realizing it was a chinese knockoff. I searched on my phone for about 10 minutes and couldn't find this set. When I opened it, there was a chinese insert, and the discs were in individual plastic sleeves. The discs were actually pressings, not burned. but the labeling on the discs was odd. Each one had the season number in a bright circle, the bottom of the disc had some chinese text on it, along with NTSC. The back of the case also had a glaring typo on it "Eeglish" instead of "English". It was a pretty nice case, almost a tome-like case, with decent artwork, but even at $5, I passed.

Ran out today and found a Legacy Millennium Falcon for $20.
I didn't know what it was exactly at the store but it was huge and looked awesome so I had to bite.

Unfortunately it's missing all the projectiles and the landing gear as well as Han and Chewy.
Everything else is there and it works fine.

Not a bad haul today:

Virtual Boy w/ tennis, no headphones or power adapter
.hack infection
Super Mario 64 DS
Scribblenauts
Pokemon Stadium
Pokemon Stadium 2 (x2)

Finally got some sealed games. I got three sealed cib jungle beat for 1.29 each!! i ran to the checkout and left lol...

That reminds me of when I first joined CAG and Kmart had Taiko Drum Master and Donkey Konga for around $5 each. I think I grabbed 3 of each when I found them. I mean, a game and a unique controller for it for $5, how could you go wrong?

Now I probably wouldn't even bother picking them up unless they were $1 each.

Anyway, I made a trek to the one other Salvation Army I occasionally find stuff at yesterday while I was at the one discount grocery up near there. I found a second Clerks Uncensored animated series set for $3.99 just like the one I got the other day.

Unfortunately the first disc on this one was trashed. It had a huge deep crack or scratch on the first disc. They ended up throwing the whole set in the garbage. I was gonna ask them if I could grab just the case from them for my set, since the one clasp is broken on the case on mine. But I know this store would probably expect me to pay the $4 for the whole set with the broken disc and all just to get the case.

Same here, but unless you REALLY REALLY want DK Jungle Beat, I would have probably left them, even at $1.29, they're not good for much besides being a paperweight

Wowzers!

:lol:The hilarity with the used consoles I bought last week continues. I watched the movie Observe & Report(Rated R) on the PS2 the other night with no problems whatsoever. So last night I rent the new The Three Stooges movie from Redbox.

I pop it in, hit play and WHAM-O....up comes a parental restriction screen. What....the.....fuck!?!?!?! An R rated movie will play perfectly fine on the system, but a PG rated movie will not? Weird.

Anyway, I didn't wanna bother with the parental controls last night so I just used my normal DVD player to play it. Excellent movie btw. I was laughing more than I thought I'd be at a modern Three Stooges movie.

Now I gotta go upstairs and reset the damn controls before I go return the movie to Redbox. I wonder if the game parental controls are set the same way, where I can play an M rated title like San Andreas all day but if I pop in something like an E rated kiddie game I'll get a 'forbidden' screen pop up.

Alright. I followed the one guide and managed to shut off the parental controls on the dvd playback. Then I proceeded to watch a DVD-R I had to test out the capabilities of this PS2 to play those sort of media as well. Aside from one hiccup it played it well. Sweet.

I found these sealed battletech ccg boxes.. anyone know the prices for these on amazon they go for crazy prizes, i dont they they sell for that much...

On topic: While not gaming related i did score LN manga for $0.99 each that msrp for 10-15 each

Battle Royale 1-5, Trigun Deep Space Planet 1 &2, as well as Trigun Maximum 1-4

ALL look like they were fresh off a bookstore shelf with the addition of a $0.99 tag on the spines

Found a few cool things past few days at thrifts.
Main thing anyone here would really care much about is

Red GBA SP - $3

Didn't come with a charger and the case has some scratches, but used my DS charger and it works. Speaker sounds super weak (never had one (honestly not that much into portable gaming) so maybe they always were...) and kinda sounds like something is a bit loose (it crackles sometimes).

Some other cool stuff include
Atari Flashback 2 for $5
Some older PC games for $1 a piece even though they were supposed to be $3.99 (cashier was like "I just gave them to you for $1 a piece" so... I don't know )
A couple Starcom VHS for $0.25 each
Ultimate League Soccer for NES for $1
and my favorite
A vintage 50s Vornado desk fan for $5 It definitely needs a new cord but the blades spin freely so the motor should be good.
My ps2 that i got used plays some movies fine but completely fuck s up other ones
The thing that has me worried the most about this $7 PS2 is the fact it's a 30001 model(aka one of the first models of the PS2). So this sob is an OLD system. Going by the fact that it's warranty seal has been cut/broken, I'm guessing the old owner plopped either a replacement lens in it or cleaned the lens.

Good thing is that the lenses to replace those ones are typically cheap as hell if I remember correctly. But for $7 I'll be happy enough if I get 3 months outta it.;) Of course, in three months I'll probably come here n bitch if the system stops reading stuff.:whistle2:#

I have a slim I got used from Gamer's Arena in State College. It reads games great blue ones and all!

It will play A-team, A Clockwork Orange, et cetera. However when I rented a redbox, it would not play it!

Ontopic: How much does a dreamcast with an offcial controller, and a knockoff no cables go for? Saw one for i believe $20 at the same place I snagged the books

Maybe it didn't like that ring sticker that Redbox puts on their discs? I know when BBV used to put those 'property of' stickers on the top of the game discs that covered the entire top part of it I think it threw it off balance and caused a reading issue with my fat PS2 back in the day.

I think redbox dvds use some trickery to avoid playback on certain devices. I tried using my laptop to play a disc from redbox once when the PS3 wasn't hooked up to the tv, but the laptop was, and my computer wasn't able to recognize it.

I wonder if the PS2 dvd firmware triggers something as well?

Not a bad morning for me. Hit 6 places, including two pawn shops, and found a few things. At one shop that never gets anything, they had a Dreamcast, no controller but with the power cord, for $20.00. I didn't buy it, but I thought it was funny as it was bundled with an N64 racing wheel for that price. Could be a decent pick up with the wheel, but I just found it funny. I did buy 3 3DO golf games for 1.00 each. They were complete with manual in the original big boxes, mainly bought them because I never see them and because they were cheap rather than due to any real desire to have them.

They also just opened a new Savers near me and the pricing was... mixed. I got the following:

Sonic the Hedgehog (Game Gear): 1.99
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Game Gear): 1.99
Streets of Rage (Game Gear): .99
Space Harrier (Game Gear): 2.99

Really cool to find as I just got a cheap Game Gear on eBay.

Also got:

Super Mario Land (GB): 1.99
Pokemon Red (GB): 4.99
Pokemon Emerald (GBA): 2.99
Pokemon Leaf Green (GBA): 2.99

So ya, the Savers had some good prices. They also had Ax Battler Legend of Golden Axe for Game Gear at 7.99, an Atari Lynx at 49.99 and a PS2 controller at 9.99. They had Sonic Spinball CIB for 1.99 but they had Sonic 1 for Genesis for 7.99. Their pricing seems a bit all over the place, but definitely some values. I would have loved Ax Battler or the Lynx, but not at those prices or anywhere near them frankly...

That could be it ibecause I got a Half-Life copy from gamestop that had stickers on it and was constantly loading, however a new disc did the same so I doubt it was the stickers

Picked up an Official PS1 4 port expansion for $2.

Seems like the Thrift I went to had a bunch of new things.
"CIB" Atari 5200 for 150. 1 PS2 w/o Expansion for 9. 1 PS2 complete for 39. 1 Gamecube w/wires and 1 controller for 40. 1 N64 for 13 I believe w/wires and 1 controller. I saw another one but the employees too far up for me to see.

1 "CIB" Pelican Gun for PS1 for $5. Would've gotten that but the Gun was missing/stolen. Only the pedal was there. >.>
