Hello GS/EB Employees or People Who Use Credit All The Time,

Quick question - I have about $120 in GS credit and wanted to pick up DS Lite for my brother who is going to leave for Japan in a couple months:

Is tax calculated before my credit is applied?

For example, TAX BEFORE CREDIT: DS Lite $129.99 + TAX (8.25%) $10.72 = $140.71 - CREDIT $120.00 = $20.71

Or, TAX AFTER CREDIT: DS Lite $129.99 - CREDIT $120.00 = $9.99 + TAX (8.25%) $0.82 = $10.81

A difference of $9.90, which is a lot considering I am probably one of the most Cheapest Ass Gamers around.

Replies are appreciated!!!
I don't think this depends on the state tax laws. I think it is based on how Gamestop applies your credit.

What I mean is, for example, if you get a discount on something (like say an employee discount), then tax should be applied after the discount. You can't be taxed on money you're not being charged. Dig?

But if they apply it as credit, an alternate form of cash, then the tax should be applied beforehand, because it's still considered to be money you're paying.

Not true - state laws determine when, how much, and on what products that state sales tax applies. In NJ, the portion of the purchase that I pay with trade-in credit is NOT taxed. Based upon the post above, in MI it's different. Purchases with gift cards are different and they are taxed - but trade-in credit is different.

So I finally sold off all my games that I actually was going to sell off last Friday. But that darn poster at GameStop about the pre-order process made me stop.

Anyway, got my Wii pre-order with all the money from trade-ins.

Here are the prices I got:

DS
GoldenEye: Rogue Agent $7
WarioWare Touched $11
Feel The Magic $1

GameCube
Baten Kaitos $7
Enter The Matrix $2
GoldenEye Rogue Agent $4
XIII $1.50
Super Monkey Ball $4
Super Monkey Ball 2 $6
Star Wars Rogue Leader $2
Lord of the Rings RotK $3
Lost Kingdoms $4

Xbox
Blowout $1
Sid Meier's Pirates $11

I also had PSO 3 for GCN, but they didn't take that, which I wasn't expecting, so I wasn't able to grab another $10 from another set of 3.

I made $104.50 after bonuses, for about $40 profit.. or extra.. or whatever the word we're using is.

If I take all 3 games from the Clancy Triple Pack and but them in seperate disc only cases they should take them as 3 seperate games right?
Should I complain to the store manager (no idea if one of the guys tonight was a manager or not), should I ask for the district manager, or corporate, if I get asked to pay the full price?
I'm surprised no one answered you about this yet. I'm pretty sure they are going to charge you for it as a NEW game. I'd just stay away from there if I were you, as it will not end well :D. Can you pick it up at another EB? Call and ask if they have a SEALED copy and if so, ask them to hold it for you.

not nec. about the trade-in deal, but had a great experience yesterday

went in to trade my daughter's white DS for a pink one (i know, i know, how uncheapassed of me). anyway guy says $80 credit and i hand him my edge card. he scans it and can't figure out why it doesn't add 10% and decides that it doesn't work with hardware. i was kinda displeased but oh well. he asks how old is it...2 months....did you buy it here....no....it looks perfect....i said yeah i have had screen protectors on it. he tells me hold on and says i will just give you credit for a used return price and gives me $119.99 + tax!!!

so i only had to spend $10.84 to trade up...my cheapass lives on!!!

You are one lucky SOB. I wish I could get such luck. I don't think any Gamestop employees would consider being so cool with me.

Damn, I wish I was one of your kids.

2) It seems like a stupid store policy to allow them to check out the last copy of a game. I could handle it if two workers had BOUGHT copies, but I had no idea they were allowed to 'loan' the game out to play. Haven't I heard something somewhere about EB or GS being sued for selling used games as new before, or was I imagining that? If I go in on Thursday to buy it, are they going to try to tell me I have to pay the new price, or used? Do I have a right to raise hell if they try to make me pay for a new game when it's obviously used?

GameStop has a really, really awful policy of opening brand new games for displaying the box and allowing employees to check out the games that are opened. The worst part is they'll fetch the display box and the gutted contents right in front of you and put them together and will charge you the NEW price for it. The store works on an inventory system so I don't think they'll give you the used price for it but even so, I doubt you'd get much of a discount since the game already sells for $20. You can raise hell but I doubt they'll listen.

Should I complain to the store manager (no idea if one of the guys tonight was a manager or not), should I ask for the district manager, or corporate, if I get asked to pay the full price?

There is always a manager on duty. They might give you the used price if you really complain about it, but I it might be a better idea to buy the game elsewhere. Either in another GameStop or at Best Buy for $15 after GGC. The problem with GameStops is that none of them received many copies of this game.

3) What if this guy who currently has it decides he wants to buy it on Thursday? Shouldn't I have had 'first dibs' on it since I came in today trying to buy it?

But there is nothing in the computer about a preorder reservation, so you'd be screwed over. But I seriously doubt the guy plans to buy it after keeping it for a week.

Does any one know the trade-in value for these games?

Rogue Ops :ps2:
Mission Impossible Operation Surma :ps2:
F-Zero GX :gc:
Blinx :xbox:

EB/GS is >40 miles away and they don't give trade-in quote over the phone.

Another EB is basically out of the question, the only other one nearby I know how to get to is out of stock. If there's others, I don't know how to get to them and to be entirely honest I'm not sure I want to drive any further than I should have to. I'm stubborn.

I don't mind buying it used-- I just don't like being told outright it's being used by some kid right now and later this week I *might* have the chance to purchase it for its full price. Especially after the class action suit they had against them for the exact same issue.
It's the principle of the matter, I guess. :/ Had they not blantantly told me what was going on with the game, maybe I wouldn't be so annoyed (Yeah, I'd rather them lie and be like 'Oh, we have one coming in on Friday! We'll hold it for you!'), but for them to say 'Sorry, I'm playing it now, you can't have it yet' has pissed me off :whistle2:| They didn't even let me hold it or anything, which I probably would've been fine with.

Best Buy is also out of the question, even with GGC-- I don't have the $10 right now to buy any games (only a $5 reward voucher). I'm not only cheap ass, but also, broke ass.

I know I'll have to suck it up if I really want the game (which I do) but I figure I'll at least try, and if anyone had any similar experiences or tips on how to talk to them about it.
Okay. I just had a less than stellar time at my local EB. I traded in 9 games, and was quoted a $70ish price. I knew that had to be before the bonus $30, so I had to remind him about that and he keyed it in and scanned my edge card. $110ish. Good. I had checked just before leaving for the store to see if they had Cooking Mama in-- the one game I was really looking for. They had at least 1-3 in stock according to the site.

I didn't see it on the wall so I asked at the desk. One guy said he bought one of two copies, so there should be one left. Well, I wanted two, but one will work.

So they dig around.... dig dig dig... can't find it. Clerk guy says that maybe someone had taken it home, so they check this log thing, and find that another worker had 'rented' it out for a few days, but had supposedly returned it already. They look around again and it's still not found, so they call the guy, who says he still has it and will return it in less than 5 days.

This makes me fairly displeased as I don't see why a store clerk should have the game when it was the last copy in the store and he isn't BUYING it. I'm in the store now wanting to buy it, and they can't sell it to me cause this guy 'rented' the game. I don't like being told the game is being rented out unless I'm at Blockbuster. They tell me to come back in sometime int he next 5 days and it should be in.
I'd complain to corporate. They'll probably send you a $20 gift card. Don't even bother complaining to the manger though. First of all, it is not store policy to have games checked out when they are in low supply, nor should he be able to keep it for that long. The purpose of checking out games isn't so that they can play it for enjoyment, but to simply become familiar with the title. It's not like he'll need to beat the game or anything.
Secondly, they shouldn't have to dig around like that to find a game. A good management team knows their inventory, and especially if someone has a game checked out. It's obvious that they don't have their shit together.
Try to remain anonymous if you file a complaint, because if you ever go back, and they've found out that you've complained, they'll give you bad service for as long as you go (but with Gamestop's employee tunrover, it won't be that big of a deal).
I don't remember corporate's number at the moment, but you can try www.gamestopfeedback.com. Don't know if that works, but people definitely get results over the phone. Just sound appalled and surprised that they'd sell you a used game as though it were new. Then tell them that they didn't help you at all in trying to obtain the game, and that you had no choice but to go to BestBuy (or any local competitor) to buy it.
What a crappy store. The least they could have done is taken your number and call you when it came in, not have you check back. And that's the least they could've done.
Does SSX count as a sports game?
YMMV, but I'd imagine it'd work as long as it's not a yearly release like Madden.
YMMV, but I'd imagine it'd work as long as it's not a yearly release like Madden.
Yea, it all depends on the store. The one EB I trade in to will take a sports game if its not numbered, so stuff like SSX and Hot Shots Golf works fine.
I'll be interested to see if they extend this promo like they did last time....
EDIT: *Offer expires 09/24/06.--- Does this mean the deal ends at 11:59:59 PM on the 24th, or 11:59:59 PM on the 23rd? (assuming the store opens 24/7)

I got 2 Tom Clancy 3 games in 1 pack...Well this count as three games? I haven't opened it yet but i'm guessing there is actually 3 cd's as its pretty heavy...Anyone had problems? Tips? Thanks

Also can you trade in the same copy for the $10 deal?

Long story short, if an EB/GS employee thinks their store won't be able to sell the 3 pack games, they may try and charge the refurb fee. This was the answer from a EB employee, who I asked about their policy on the refurb fee.

Only other time they should charge it, is if the games are in crap condition(tons of scratches, fingerprints, etc.

Funny thing is though, I've bought games from my local EB/GS stores that looked like hell and if the original owners got charged the fee for them, they friggin lied to them about the fee then. And to me, that's just another reason to hate EB/GS.

The clerk I got on Saturday night at the second EB/GS I tried to trade a copy of the Clancy 3 pack tried to tell me all THREE games only counted as ONE. What a load of crap!!!!!

So, just be hopeful you don't get the same type of bastard clerk I got or they will try this nonsense on you too.

And YES, there are 3 cd/dvd discs in the case, which should make it a 3 game block for the $10 extra. However, each game will only net you $1 each, so I hope you have the Edge card or the GS one, as that tosses on another 10% on TOP of the $10 bonus. For one 3 pack of the games, I grabbed $14.30.

Thanks, yeah i got it a K-mart...Was only $4...So i guess i'm going to make a $20 profit...:)

K-mart seems like the best place to get games...What games are you guys getting from Toys r Us? Most of their games are like $8 & up...

So what are the best valued games to get & do the trade in at Gamestop...
Is their a dedicated post?

Super Monkey Ball 2 GC - $6.00

Got this, Namco Museum, and Pac-Man World 2 at K-Mart for a total of $10... traded them in to EB for $27. I got a second set of games to do again tonight when the employees switch out.

It boils down to me getting Okami for about $15 since I only need $13 more to pay it off completely. I *love* this deal.

Another question is (I never traded in at EB/GS before):

Do you have to have the games compelete with case and manual? Would they take disc only?
Another question is (I never traded in at EB/GS before):

GameStop does not require the manual or case.

I have read that some stores do want them though, and that some actually charge a re-stocking fee if you don't provide them (a fee which does not actually exist).

So I would call the store you want to sell your stuff at and ask.

have some prices from games not on the wiki (surprisingly) but i will list everything before bonuses

psp
socom $12
Death Jr. $7
Infected $8

DS
Need for speed underground 2 $5
Monster Trucks $5
Marvel Nemesis $6
Texas Hold-em poker $3
ATV Quad Frenzy $4
Sea World Shamu $7

overall got $95.65 in credit...was very surprised since those are some crap DS games:lol:

Anyone in California having the problem that there are no more K-Marts, they were all bought out and turned into Sears Essientials. I went to one two days ago and Sim's The Urbz and Feel the Magic were still $9.99...

Hello, i realize this is probably not the place but i have the same problem with cooking mama as the other guy. First of all i need to ask what the policy is on employee and customer holds that do not have a preorder, since preorders were not allowed on this title.

Its a really long story, but there has been a copy of cooking mama sitting at a gamestop near me for several days now, its on the locator, and my experience with the locator is that it is extremely accurate, i have tested it. THAT GAME IS IN THAT STORE SOMEWHERE, i just dont know where, i suspect its in the employee hold drawer. Its still in that store in stock as of right now. I have gone to the store at least 3 times to call the employees out on this, i told them i know they had the game in the store because it was on the store locator as being in stock and they still deny any existance of the game in that particular location. All they give me back as an answer is complete crap.

So yesterday when i was picking up a copy of sigma star saga, i used the reciept from that to type a very long complaint to the district manager about what was going on, which includes the full story, and how i am angry that i was not allowed to place a preorder on the game despite the fact that i tried at least 3 times. I did request that the district manager call me and i left 2 emails and my home phone, which i never give out to anyone ever. I have not gotten a call yet.

If anyone has a phone number that i can call to get these people at this store in trouble PLEASE PM it to me or leave it in this thread, i will be watching for responses. I dont even want any compensation or freebies i just want the chance to get this game out of that store and into my hands for the regular price of 19.99 i am not asking for anything else, and i will do it in a peaceful manner i promise, no yelling or screaming, i dont want to be the idiot customer here.

the game/item locator or whatever is complete crap, u conducted very poorly executed tests

The game has been on the locator for several days now, for a more detailed explanation:

I called the store on thursday night to confirm there was no cooking mama in stock, there was not, the store locator confirmed it

Friday morning must have been when the shipment arrived, since thats when it showed up on the locator, so i rushed out to the store and got there by like 12noon to find out they are sold out of the game, despite the game being in stock on the locator. It has been in stock on the locator since that friday morning, what is going on here i honestly dont know but its something funny regardless.....

Ive been back a couple times since then for various reasons and because its in a shopping plaza where i go to other stores, no sign of the game despite the questioning of several other employees, in a nice way of course.

I have tested the locator in the past, when i would buy a copy of a game and there would only be one in stock according to the locator (1-3), then i would go to the store and purchase the last copy. So in about maybe 3 hours most i would say that locator was updated showing 0 copies of the game in stock. Its quite accurate. Even if it was slightly innaccurate which i would expect it to be, there is no reason for that game to be listed as in stock for 4-5 days and it not be somewhere in that store....

No DM will do anything for you, they will just tell you the locator isn't always up to date and accurate. It's not like you've actually seen it with your own two eyes and you know someone is hiding it for themselves... that would be a different story.

It could have gotten lost, destroyed, the counts in the box could have been off by 1, a whole number of factors go into it. If an item is stolen or lost or anything else it takes months for the item to leave the locator, usually when they do their next inventory check it'll leave when they manually update the counts.

Unless you have credit there with nothing else to spend it on, every other store in the world has the game.

It doesnt really make sense that someone would be hiding it either, its only a 19.99 game, if they were hiding it, it would have been for like 1-2 days until they could purchase it, it wouldnt make sense that someone would hide it for that long, unless there is some bizzare reason why they would...

It could be on hold for a customer that just hasnt picked it up and payed for it yet, that happens all the time too.

This particular store is one of the bad ones that have questionable practices that i have seen with my own 2 eyes, such as selling bootleg gba games, i have seen bootlegs with my own eyes in their cases and when i attempted to tell them that a game was bootleg so it doesnt cause further problems, i was told it was ok for them to sell bootleg games.

On the contrary, the gamestop game locator is extremely INaccurate. Why? Because it also counts the game if it was traded in with a system, or with nine or more items. Gamestop is forced to hold all games that are traded in with a system for 33 days, along with all games in a set of 10 or more. It is extremely likely that the game you are looking for is shrinkraped in the back with nine other games, on a shelf with about another two hundred games. There is a chance that it is on hold for an employee, but the book says that an employee can have any item on hold for a maximum of 2 weeks (or untill his / her next paycheck), at least that's how my store works.

I have tested the locator in the past, when i would buy a copy of a game and there would only be one in stock according to the locator (1-3), then i would go to the store and purchase the last copy.

There is always the possibility the game is misplaced or stolen. There are mistakes made all the time in store inventory.

Correction. Your local police department requires GameStops under its jurisdiction to hold any games traded in with a system or in sets of ten or more for 33 days.

Here, for example, there is no hold policy on games, and systems traded in must be held for a minimum of three weeks. In the next county over, it's two weeks holding time for a system.

GameStop as a corporation has no all-encompassing policy about having to hold traded in items.
ill ask once more, does this deal end ON the 24th, or after the 24th
The end date is always the last day the deal is active. It will work on the 23rd and 24th, but it will not work on the 25th.

Just returned from my third trade-in trip. Values before 10% bonus:

:ps2: Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus $3 :whistle2:|
:ps2: EyeToy Groove w/camera $2.50 :whistle2:(
:psp: Madden '07 $20 :D

Got a price quote of $6 on Metroid Prime Pinball and $5 on Sonic Adventure DX (GameCube) today, so I'll be trading those in along with Halo 2 and about 9 games I picked up as fodder come Saturday morning.. which is the next time my friend works and I can make it to the local GS :p

Big list:

Get on Da Mic PS2 - $1
Medal of Honor Frontline Xbox - $1.50
The Thing Xbox - $1.00
Pac-Man World 2 Xbox - $4.00
Namco Museum Xbox - $3.00
Super Monkey Ball 2 - $6.00
World Championship Poker PS2 - $1.00
Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando PS2 - $4.00
Enter the Matrix PS2 - $2.00

Total after all my bonuses - $59.48.

The first three games came from a pawn shop, spent $9 total on all of them, so I only really made about $6 trading them in to EB. The last set of six all came from K-Mart and I only paid about $18 for all six. So I basacially doubled my money very easily. I then:

Paid off the $13 I owed on Okami
Completely paid off Dragon Quest Rocket Slime ($35)
Put the remaining $11 on King of Fighters 2006

Awesome!

DAMN, I thought I had him...San Diego suckkkkkks

Sorry if this has already been brought up, but I didn't feel like searching through 30 pages...

I went to Walmart, Compusa and Kmart in search of $1 (or thereabouts) games to use for this deal, but to no avail. Is there any place that for sure would have some uber-clearance games, or is it all YMMV?

I picked up a copy of Pac-Pix at Sears for $1.97 and it has a $5 trade in at GS. So buy 3 for 6 bucks turns into 15 plus extra $10 = $25 in store credit, or $19 profit.

Only if your store lets you do three of the same game for the trade 3... all the stores around here only let you do one copy, they don't allow multiples unless it's for a different system.

Among the usual trade fodder (max payne, powerdrome, etc.) I traded in Advent Rising for Xbox. It's only worth $1. I didn't see this listed in the Wiki so I'm putting in here as FYI. Advent Rising is $5 at Kmart.

I realize most of you are interested in the trade 3 deal, but apparently the DS Lite trade-in deal is dead, or at least YMMV. Instead of $60 credit like their ad and website promise, they offered my $40 for my original DS. I said no thanks and put it on ebay.
