Wii U - General Discussion Thread

I forgot that I'm out of HDMI inputs too... I'm not sure if I want to get a switch or if I want to just buy a sound bar with additional HDMI inputs. Whatever I do I'll just need to make sure it's compatible with my 3DTV.

They make soundbars with HDMI ports? Well I might need to take a look at them. Probably just going to do the HDMI switch but wont hurt to take a look.

I recently picked up a new surround sound receiver, and made sure it had the necessary HDMI switching. (was well as 3D pass-through) So I'm set in that regard. It doesn't hurt that the Wii U will be coming with its own HDMI cable either. I'm starting to get pretty excited. (though it could just be the coffee I just finished) I'll call around to various shops tomorrow to see which would be the most likely candidate.

Ordered a HDMI Switcher off Amazon. Got the $8.99 3 port one which will be enough to power my PS3, Wii-U and Raspberry Pi.

This month has been the death of me. Wii-U, NSMB U, Raspberry Pi, Hellsing V-VIII, Black Lagoon Complete, and Soul Eater Complete.

I am sorry bank account .

What are you using the Pi for? I've been keeping an eye on it since I'd love to use one to power a mini arcade cabinet. I don't think MAME runs smoothly though yet.
Not that I don't already have an Xbox to stream all this content, but this is kind of a bummer that we won't get video apps day one as expected: http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/16/wii-u-video-apps-delayed
I agree, but I'm not really all that concerned. The US is getting it in advance of everyone else and I'm more concerned about the games. It would have been nice to have the video apps up on day one, but I'm ok with it. I still have an Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Roku.

Was just coming here to make sure someone posted that music. Pretty bangin'. Glad to see the first Wii U "hack" was for something that worthy.

Boo.

Nintendo TVii delayed to provide “a great experience for consumers”

November 16th, 2012 Posted in News, Posted by Valay, Wii U | No Comments » Nintendo delivered an unexpected surprise today. Earlier today, the company announced that the Wii U’s Nintendo TVii application would not be ready for the console’s launch. The new plan is to have it ready to go in December.
Nintendo TVii was widely expected to be available on day-one. So why the delay? According to Nintendo, the move was made to provide “a great experience for consumers”.
Nintendo assures consumers that the app will be released as soon as possible next month.

Damn, I'm not one to go strictly by reviews, but Epic Mickey 2 is getting pretty slammed, so I think I'll pass on that. Scribblenauts Unlmited is getting really good reviews so I think I'll pick that up.
Don't.

Don't do this. Don't weaken my resolve.
Chip tune. And orchestrated. Melts your brain.

Damn, really? The first game had so much potential only flawed by the controls and camera. You would think that would have been easy to build on.

It seems like they fixed the camera, but tried to approach it in a completely different way this time around.

And the Wii U update is out, but it's taking FOREVER to download.

Just read Nintendo's statment on use of flash based drives. It really scares me. They obviously have no freaking clue about modern flash drives. Makes you wonder about them. A tech based company that makes an asinine statement about tech.

What the heck happened to this.company. I really hope this is the first step back in the right direction.

Sony with their horrible handling of the vita(travesty, its such a good little system), Microsoft and all their weird ideas( how is it Kinect integration is worse than ever? MS Point are STILL around?).....gaming industry may be in a downward spiral

It should be going on sale in half an hour on the east coast.

I'm currently looking for stores that might have midnight launches in my area. I'll go to a Super-Walmart if I can't find anything. (always open at midnight)

Wii U review is going live on Kotaku in 13 minutes. Zombie U reviews are embargoed until tomorrow morning (I'm hearing around 9am est)

For you guys going for your wiiu at midnight, I would like to know what stores have a lot of games. Looking to get Mario today, but I want to go a store with the best chances of finding it.

So, can anyone fill me in on the deal with existing Wii Points on the Wii you use to transfer to the Wii U? Do they convert to cash values for the Wii U shop or what? They said they would carry over but I don't see how. Do they just carry over for the old Wii shop and you can still use that on the Wii U? And can you still redeem Wii Points cards on the Wii U version of the Wii shop? If that is the case, I don't need to hassle with dumping points on my old Wii before transferring it. Basically I need to know if I have to do that with the 3-4 Wii Points cards I have laying around.

And I assume you pretty much have to transfer a Wii over first thing when you boot up the Wii U, right? Otherwise I would think the Miis and accounts would get all screwed up. I won't be picking mine up from GS until tomorrow afternoon and probably not setting it up till late Sunday night, so it would be nice to know all of this in advance and I figure the info will be out there before I have to deal with it.

OK, Nintendo actually has info up for this now (they didn't a few days ago):

What will transfer:
• Downloaded Wii games (WiiWare, Virtual Console)
• Wii, WiiWare, and Virtual Console saved game data 1
• Purchased Add-on content for Wii games

Wii Shop Channel data
• Existing Wii Points 2
• Wii Shop Channel usage records

Other data
• Mii characters 3

And that '2' footnote after Wii Points says "Wii Points will be carried over to the Wii Shop Channel, accessed only in Wii mode. If you have more than 10,000 Wii Points, the transfer will not occur.".

So I'm guessing you can continue to redeem Wii Points cards on the Wii Shop when running in Wii mode. The Wii U shop will be a whole different thing. Kind of disappointing, but it was to be expected.

But here's one thing I'm not clear on. Will your Miis from the Wii only go into the "Wii mode" version of the console, or will they also go to the Wii U? It isn't a big deal since I can always remake them, but it is odd they aren't clear on that. Footnote '3' seems to indicate they aren't brought to the Wii U ("Mii characters will move to the Mii Channel within Wii mode.").

Managed to pick up a Basic Wii U set at a Walmart near me. I went around 11:15 pm. I was the sixth person in line, and that store had only gotten six units in stock. 4 Deluxe sets and 2 Basic sets. I would have preferred a Deluxe set, naturally, but I'm beginning to get the impression that this system might be just as supply constrained as the original Wii through the holidays. The scuttlebutt from the other people in line was that most stores would be getting similar sized shipments, and that there were already lines forming in front of some of those stores for the 8:00 AM opening.

I'm going to chalk this up as a lucky break for now.

By the way, since the Deals thread on Wii U preorders will get closed up soon, I changed the title of this thread to make it reflect that this is more of a general discussion thread. I just hope all the anti-Nintendo trolls don't descend on here like they did on the preorder thread. I told them to make their own discussion thread about how much the Wii U sucks and isn't for hardcore gamers if they want.

Replying from the Wii U gamepad!
So only Miis from the plaza transfer, none from the parade. After the transfer is over, they are only in Wii mode. However, at that point, when you go into the WiiU's Mii Maker, you can import any transferred Miis that are in the Wii mode for use on the WiiU.

Thanks, that's what I figured.

There's no loss for me on the Mii Parade. I had close to 1000 a couple years back before the memory on my Wii went corrupt and when I got it back from Nintendo it was wiped clean (SSBB, Animal Crossing, etc saves all gone). I don't think I've gotten any since then.

Totally on the fence and would love some input on initial reactions. What do you like, what don't you like? My backlog of games is growing mighty steep, but I do love me some Mario... Thanks in advance

I have a question about the update. Is it easy to get it started and once it's started, is it pretty much well labeled throughout? I ask because I may need to go by work today for an hour and I'd like the Wii U to update while I'm there. My dad will be keeping an eye on it for me, though I'd like to keep it as easy for him as possible; he isn't the best with new technology.

I have a question, does anyone have any old Wii game data saved onto an SD card? How in the world does that stuff transfer? I have a ton of stuff on an SD card that I clearly can't put on the Wii all at once, and I have seen no one mention or nothing from Nintendo referencing the fact that stuff backed up on SD cards will transfer over. Anyone have any idea where that stuff goes?

If it's just game data, I believe you can just put it in the SD slot and it'll read fine, the transfer is mainly necessary for VC games and Mii data.

Well, its a ton of saved games and its a bunch of VC/WiiWare games.

Unless of course that when it transfers my points/account information to the Wii U, it also transfers the items I've purchased so that I can simply redownload them onto my Wii U's Wii Mode menu.
Nothing to really keep an eye on. Just start the update and leave it.
Thanks Octopod. That's what I'll probably do. I imagine the update will take a long time to do it's magic anyhow and I can be there and back after it's finished.

Trying to make sure that I am understanding everything correctly. Due to my wife deciding that she wanted one last minute I did not pre-order.

Went to the store this morning and was able to pick up a Basic Model.

At this time, I have no interest in Nintendoland so missing out on that part doesn't bother me. My confusion lies with the expandable storage.

I know this has been mentioned before but I am still a little foggy. Assuming I am using a powered USB hard drive, am I going to be able to download Wii U games to that storage or is that only for things like media and such ?

I don't care about having to expand my storage after the fact, but trying to figure out if there is something else that I am missing from not getting the deluxe model beside internal storage, the free game and the dock.

99% of all my purchases would be in disc form anyway as I prefer physical media, but just wanting to understand it fully since I havent been keeping up with it that much.

That would be my guess/hope. Then you can just re-download your purchases. I would probably transfer my saves to my system though . . .

Yeah, your assumption is right. The expandable storage is for Wii U downloads and game saves and stuff like that. I don't know about media however. The Wii U formats it for use when you plug it in.

A USB hard drive can store Wii U games.

Ok thanks. I was wondering wether or not to keep it or have to go out hunting again for the next few weeks. Ugh.

Just wanting it to be over (and she probably won't know the difference anyway) I think I am just going to keep the white one and use the extra $50 to pick up a classic controller pro if I can find one.

Has there been any word on gamesharing of any kind? I'm wondering if I can get away with one deluxe and one basic (for my parents) and just do all of my digital purchasing on my deluxe unit.
Did anyone get a club nintendo code with nintendo land
Numerous unboxing videos showed that no Club Nintendo code came with Nintendoland. Whether that was the reviewer units only I'm not sure, but I assume it won't come with one. I don't remember Wii Sports coming with one.

That's what i assumed but then i saw on club nintendo that the game had one. Would be annoying if only separate game had it...

I didn't see a code in my box, and I only got 160 coins for registration. The Club Nintendo site shows 160 coins for both the base model and deluxe model, so looks like there is no additional points earned for buying the deluxe model.

That's kind of lame. I guess Nintendo figures the e-shop discount is enough for the deluxe owners.
