WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008 Gen. Discussion

I'm in. Custom entrance songs on the 360 sold me on this one. CM Punk's definitely getting his Miseria Cantare song now.

That's cool that custom soundtrack is in this game.. def makes CAW much better because of that.
It'd be even better if you could use videos on your HDD for titantrons. Maybe 2009 :)

But here's a question: Will your custom theme play online..?

fuck. I was skipping this one without a second thought since I'm sure it'll just be a marginal improvement over last year's, but they FINALLY do the ONE THING that I've been bitching about for years...and now I probably have to buy it.

I may way to see if you can edit the default themes for the WWE guys though.
this game is gonna suck just like 07. they took out all the signature grapples becuase they where sued so now just like in 07 all the moves are gonna be arm drags and stuff like that. best wrestling game ever=hctp
Finally someone says it other than me on these forums. HCTP FOR LIFE.
i dont want to have to burn them on cd and then rip them on my 360..

Flash drive, dude. :)
Flash drive, dude. :)
They copy over from flash drives?!

Hmm. I've got a MicroSD card and a USB adapter..

nope. Bummer. It'll only let me play from the drive. It won't let me copy it over to the hard drive.

I stand corrected. I know you can do custom themes from a flash drive, so I figured it worked for music as well. Kinda ridiculous that you have to do it from a CD, but I guess a CD-RW would help out with that.
but I guess a CD-RW would help out with that.
Pretty sure you can only play CD-RW's and not copy from them on the 360. I think the only thing you can copy from are CD-Rs.
This will be the only game to officially have KING BOOKAH as part of the roster!!!
It was referenced in the last game, but he didn't have the gimmicked-out entrance and everything.

Oh and I really wish they would bring back the double-down 10 count in this game. It was so sweet when a guy would hit his finisher and then collapse in '06. I was so pissed when I realized they took that out for '07.
That, the chop contest and the sleeper hold mini-game need to come IMO

I'm still surprised they didn't do the Chop Contest as a "Total Control" move (or whatever they called the analogue stick moves in 07).

I was more stoked for FPWR, but custom soundtracks changed my mind. All we need is the custom entrance videos from Raw 2 and all will be good.

I'm in the same boat...I was going to skip this game as I'm still playing 2007 and enjoying it. But the custom stuff might be enough to bring me over.

I don't follow these games so sorry if it was posted but....
At Best Buy, they have a preorder for this game for $5 and it includes a demo in the case. Have fun.

you're only about three weeks late, but that's cool. The demo is going on XBox Live next week. There's even a post on 9-19 like 10 posts up talking about it.

Cool, well hopefully it will be up by tonight, but after seeing the TNA footage Im more excited about that game then this.

Sucks that there wont be any downloadable content.

I saw someone saying smackdown vs raw 2008 was on xbox live. I got on it faster than anything, but it still isn't there. Hopefully it is tonight otherwise I got exicted over nothing. :(
....wait, so JTG is in the game but Shad Gaspard is not?
he is, the list in the op must've skipped over him or something

Just played some Orton Vs Black Lesnar matches and I'm officially hyped up for this game! I love all the little improvements, from using the ref as a shield, the new fighting styles, the improved walking animations, hell I marked out for Orton's new RKO's (I was honestly surprised at the new corner one).

BTW, the wrestler's entrance themes as BGM for the menus seem like placeholders (much like the 07 demo), so I would expect them to get replaced by the usual generic rock soundtrack (with the occassional ONE rap song).

November is going to be a awesome month for Wrestling VG fans, between FPR & 08 :D

The new springboard moves are awesome and everything, but why does Rey have some freaking insane TNA-like, super phoeniex splash, instead of his "Dropping the Dime"? Why his DTD isn't one of his finishers, is beyond me, eespecially since it won him way more matches as world champ than anything else (save, for the frog splash).

Eh.

It's ok, but even with the custom entrance music I'm not really sold. Maybe once the price drops I'll grab it.

Honestly, my favorite aspect of the demo so far is the music on the menus. You get several themes that haven't been on any CDs or anything. I've heard Sandman's, Cryme Time's, Lashley's, and Elijah Burke's so far. I do wonder if N4E is right though and it'll be replaced with licensed crap in the final game. I do sort of like hearing HHH's theme when the start menu comes up, so I hope not.

Load times seem to be a little less offensive this time around...at least based on this demo.

You're right, loadtimes seemed improved, I didn't really notice it.

I'm somewhat of a fan of the SD!vsRaw series, so I actually enjoyied the demo. I thought they were just going to release 07 with a stripped down roster, but it looks like they really tried to fix up the gameplay.

FYI, I don't think it's worth $60, few games are, however I'm still getting this day 1
from Gamefly
.

Anybody know how to actative the whole scroll through weapons under the ring thing?

It just keeps giving me a random weapon.

Also how do you do the weapon grapple from last year. I press the stick but it doesn't do anything.

Wow, that's lame even for THQ.

Actually, I think you have to have the "Hardcore" fighting style, let me check.

I dunno if you guys have tried these.. if you have a chair near the turnbuckle, hit A and it'll wedge it between the middle and top turnbuckle.

also, if they're sitting down in the corner and you have the chair, you can run and hit attack and it'll do a running chair dropkick to the face. there's so many more moves to discover. I haven't seen the super RKO yet.

Also, have you guys seen "RAMPAGE" mode? Pick Black Lesnar and when you have a special, hold RB and hit Y and it goes into RAMPAGE mode, kinda like No Mercy. iirc, during rampage mode, you reverse all strikes and grapples.

Super RKO is Orton's corner special. He takes a knee, and plays possum as the opponent goes to the top.
Finally someone says it other than me on these forums. HCTP FOR LIFE.
Eh, I love HCTP, I think it's easly the best of the SD! series (including the SD!vsRaw series), but it just doesn't match up to No Mercy & Fire Pro Wrestling D, in my opinion.

Don't know what difficulty the game is running at, but instead of investing time in different fighting styles they really should've invested time in addressing problems the series has always has had. Such as the AI. Also it seems a step backwards to remove the stamina system, and to limit the strong grapples to the total grapple control (or whatever it is called). Limits the amount and what types of moves you can even do. Graphics don't seem like much of an improvement, and if the commentary is representive of the final game than it's even worse than before, if possible. JBL was answering questions Cole never asked, etc.

Great that the tried something different, but they really should've fixed what was broken and worked to improve what was great instead of doing something new and not addressing the previous issues.

Thank god Fire Pro R is coming out.

I think its great that they added soo many context sensetive actions.

- Wedging the chair in the corner ropes
- Pushing the ref at your opponent
- Removing the turnbuckle padding
- etc...

And the character models look fantastic, better than ever.

A list of the bullet points on a marketing release should make this game sound like the best wrestler ever.

My problem is that basic gameplay problems that have existed since the inception of the series have still not been addressed.

Wrestlers and moves clip thru the ropes like crazy

Wrestlers 'slide' into position for an animation at ridiculously high speed, this looks the worst when going after a downed opponent. Try this: Roll a guy back into the ring, then climb into the ring right where he is and watch him magically slide over on the mat to let you in the ring.

The mocap animations are canned, and I hate how you instantly swing into the proper position for the animation to execute. At least it should happen at a realistic speed like it might in a real match.

Yukes continues to pile on new modes and features, and thats great, but the glaring problems with making a 3D wrestling game play well have still not been addressed. Its like polishing a turd.

The commentary is god awful. I pinned Rey Misterio, the ref counted 1-2-3, and Taz continued on with his pointless comment that had nothing to do with what was going on in the ring. There are no commentator reactions to big moves or pin attempts. Why even have it in there?

And one last nitpick. Why are the ringside mats soo shiny? I dont recall being able to see the ring reflected in the floor around ringside. It looks like the ring is sitting on ice. Just because a next gen console is capable of fancy graphical tricks doesnt mean you should use them inappropriately just to have them in there.

Has anyone else seen the context sensitive table finishers yet? Rey's high-angle bulldog through the table was pretty cool, as I was expecting the standard powerbomb/suplex. He's also got the facebuster/chair-legdrop move to a downed opponent, and a nice springboard hurricanrana to a standing opponent.

Removing the stamina bars was a mistake, though. Completely turns this game into more of a fighting game than an actual wrestling game.

Im not exactly sure how I feel about the game. Im still getting used to the run button being LB. I do like the use of the B button for irish whipping people, makes it alot easier. I just cant pin point exactly what I dont like about the game. Maybe Im still bothered by the amount of wrestlers in the game and how many of them are no longer in the WWE.

If superstars and divas arent limited to certain match types then Im sure Ill pick it up first day. If thats not the case Ill probably wait a while to get it.

This is coming really late, but I didn't see a response to this. I use CD-RWs all the time to copy music to my 360, so I know they work, at least mine do.

Yeah I also have no problems using CD-RWs on my 360.

So far I'm not crazy about the whole "fighting style" thing. And removing the stamina system may just be a dealbreaker for me... I was very fond of it!

Haha I feel like such a nerd cliche saying it, but I'm sure glad that FirePro game is coming out next month...
