To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.

On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Haven't played a Final Fantasy game since 7, but everyone talking about xv has me curious. What games would you compare this to? I know that it will suck a bunch of time to complete, so would it be worth it to check out a summary of the universe up to this point before I start?

The very first screen you see when the game starts says "a Final Fantasy for fans and first timers". There's also a menu you can access at any time completely dedicated to lore. I've just started the game and I love it. And I haven't finished a FF game since the NES days.

Ffs, Oblivion goes backwards compatible when the sale ends
Yeah, I regret passing on it when it was on sale now.

Nice! My kids will love it. Hope it's priced similar to the Steam version ($14.99) or close in price to Minecraft ($19.99 or less).
Hopefully it's $20 but I have a feeling it will be at least $40 like other games have been.

HDR support for ESO announced, which explains the ~6GB download today.
Damn, I would have gotten it over BF if I had known.

Enjoying FFXV so far. Sometimes the graphics become kind of janky, lower resolution textures and some pop-in, but other than that it has been pretty solid, at least no frame drops I've noticed. I don't really know a good comparison. Final Fantasy tends to change it's battle system quite a bit with each modern game, at least since FFX, and it isn't really like the last major sub-series of XIII at all. Overall it has a pretty seamless open world, though with the JRPG style of finding crafting stuff everywhere with fairly low interaction with the environment itself. I haven't actually done much of the main story yet, just kind of wondering around doing sidequests mostly.

I don't know what I'd compare it to without context for what a person has played. Overall it feels like a modern JRPG with an active battle system rather than the turn-based combat of the older styled games or the ATB timer stuff that made up Final Fantasies X, XII, and XIII. The closest comparison I've played recently was Xenoblade Chronicles X, but they're still mostly different, especially the combat. There isn't really anything else I'd compare it to on the Xbone currently, we mostly have WRPGs, and BC stuff like Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon are much more traditional.

There are plenty of nods to longtime fans (especially so much classic music), but definitely no need to be familiar with the series. The only stuff you might want to check out are the free anime Brotherhood FFXV, and the movie Kingsglaive.

Is Oblivion worth going back to with the Skyrim Special Edition out? I never played either.
Honestly I would say probably not. It was kind of rough around the edges in it's day and hasn't held up well on it's own. PC it can be modded to something pretty reasonable at least. Skyrim was a massive leap over Oblivion though and far more accessible.

Oblivion is extremely dated. Not just graphically, but its much-hailed Radiant AI (NPCs with schedules & routines) seems skeletal in comparison to what it would become in future Bethesda titles. Also, as many later criticisms would point out, the cities really do feel too similar to each other; few distinguishable features.

On a positive note, the stories in Oblivion are immeasurably better than Skyrim, in my opinion. Still, I think if you played Oblivion first you would feel its age - and it might turn you off from Skyrim altogether.

It's gonna be highly dependant on the nostalgia of the game imo. It's still a good game, there's a lot to do. Shit if you were able to grab it at $5 that's a lot of bang for your buck. That said yeah you'll probably want to have your mindset attuned to gaming in '06. I think it makes up for the rough edges with its stories and immersion honestly. Plus it's a RPG, you make your character the way you want to play. There's a satisfaction to leveling up, applying your hard earned XP in traits or attributes for abilities and spells.

I'd say what about Monster Hunter + 3 other AI buddies with you? That's what I think of everytime I see "the bros" attacking something in the wild.

Hope you guys got Oblivion GOTY while you could. It went up to $24.99 used at GS. Luckily, I had a copy held and went to pick it up literally right before closing and it was ringing up $24.99 instead of $12.99 that was on the sticker and website. The guy asked me the price that was on the website, said it was $12.99. He looked at the stick, then changed the price to $12.99. With my $10 Cyber Monday PUR coupon, only paid $3 for it.

I would say no. I played Oblivion a few years after it came out but before Skyrim. It was the first Elder Scrolls game I played. I did not enjoy it and did not get very far. The combat was clunky and the world did not feel very alive to me. When Skyrim came out I was very hesitant but fortunately I really liked it.

It's $14.99 new at Amazon and Best Buy ($11.99 with GCU) still if anyone is looking.

I may be crazy but Final Fantasy XV is amazing. Like I have been excited for it and the demos did help give a feel for it. The team is an interesting take to the Final Fantasy series party. Yes they are four guys or as spybreak9 pointed out "the bros" but there is a deep connection with each other and all four have their distinct personalities not to mention abilities that make them helpful. The battle system is something that at first seems like it may be easy, Hold B to attack and Hit or Hold X to block. Simple, yet you need to mix what you are doing, if you run into battle (Im not too far yet) just holding B you are going to continuously get hit and with some enemies who will pin you to the ground needing to mash B. You do get some cool tools in your arsenal such as techniques which charge as you battle and lets you use one of the team to do a special move like Ignis has one where he chooses multiple enemies which Noctis will attack one by one, you can also hit a well timed B to add to the attack. I must mention Noctis ability to warp with his weapon which makes the battleground seem like you can travel in an instant. Hanging from the side of a rock wall as you can see a battle happening below is kinda cool.

I did have an instance where I was running throw a field and enemies just popped in right on top of me but only happened that once. Didn't notice much else as far as issues graphical wise. I usually don't notice these so maybe Im not the best to judge that.

I would recommend checking it out, now if you are really interested but its something you can wait to drop in price, this is CAG after all.

Also if you have the chance check out Kingsglaive Final Fantasy XV, its a good movie but it sets up the story and may help with any confusion on what happens in the first few hours of the game.

Are you possibly admitting to have a mental illness now? :p

ps: No ill- feeling meant, just couldnt resist the jab considering your OCD towards people who report of their OCDs...lol

I am in no way sane

Oblivion is extremely dated. Not just graphically, but its much-hailed Radiant AI (NPCs with schedules & routines) seems skeletal in comparison to what it would become in future Bethesda titles. Also, as many later criticisms would point out, the cities really do feel too similar to each other; few distinguishable features.

On a positive note, the stories in Oblivion are immeasurably better than Skyrim, in my opinion. Still, I think if you played Oblivion first you would feel its age - and it might turn you off from Skyrim altogether.
I used to write or a gaming site and we covered E3 in 2005. We got into an Oblivion preview where they didn't tell us anything, and when the landscapes came on I thought the forests and lighting were the best goddamned things I'd ever seen in a videogame and that games would never look better. Oblivion was a game that really helped launch the "next gen" in 2006, and I think going back to it, that will be pretty evident, as Bethesda had a lot of time to get to know the hardware.

I'd probably compare it to GTA IV vs GTA V. Both are still good games, and if you play them in order, they might not feel as dated, but if you started with the newer one, it'll be hard to go back to the older one.

QUESTION

I pre-ordered "Darksiders: Warmastered Edition for Xbox One" the day before it released after it came "back in stock" at www.microsoftstore.com, but the order hasn't moved since then. Anyone had a different experience pre-ordering it last Monday?
Ordered on 11/21 ... still listed as pre-ordered and hasn't shipped

You guys are kind of making me wish I jumped on that Final Fantasy XV preorder. If only I could get into RPGs right now. Seems a tad on the difficult side for whatever reason.

Also, concerning sanity. You're only insane if you've been certified. Otherwise, you're only crazy. Only big difference is the certification and the padded room.

When you came out of the sewers after the intro that was a really well orchestrated moment that entirely justified the new computer I had purchased to play it on. I think the GTA comparison is a good one since IV has similar issues that make it not hold up quite as well as you remember.

I always hit a wall with RPGs because you go from feeling like a total badass one minute to completely helpless the next in so many. However I did preorder FFXV and was very excited to see that there is an easy difficulty option. I don't care what hardcore gamers say that's a huge thing for me. I have no shame.

This. I only played a few rpgs up to that point(think Super Mario RPG and Star Wara KotoR), so I was completely blown away seeing the vast world that laid before me. First RPG I sunk 100+ hours into easily. Played that game well after 100%ing it.

Fun fact: Even though Oblivion RROD'ed my 1st 360, I'll always love that game.

Played through the first chapter and the battles were all relatively easy with one major exception:

Pay attention to the warnings about going out a night. I got killed once (used a Phoenix Down) and nearly died the next battle (all my teammates died and I was down to like 10% health). Some really nasty creatures at night!

Yep, I remember when GTA IV debuted, it was such a big deal. Everyone wanted to see what Rockstar could do on the new hardware and the reveal trailer of a realistic, accurate NYC had people losing their minds. Looking at it now, its definitely a product of its time, just like Oblivion. Any time games go for any degree of realism, they don't age well visually, whereas some art styles strike a good balance and still look perfectly good. I think Dead Rising is a good example, it was a little cartoonish in it's style and still looks good IMHO. Aged, but good.

Also adding to the FFXV praise. I am long time fan of the series, so this might be skewed, but the game is great so far.
Honest Question:

Have they pandered enough to me? I've tried three Final Fantasy games, and have quit after about 2 hours of each.

I just enjoy the open-world of Bethesda games and the choice-driven-narrative of Bioware games to play an RPG series that historically has neither. (From reviews, I understand that the first half of the game is fairly open, at least.)

Final Haul:

Overcooked: Gourmet Edition

Doom (Original)

Doom 2

Skyrim SE

Rare Replay (owned physical)

Overwatch (owned physical)

Figured I should have picked up Oblivion but who knows if I'd ever get around to playing it. I'm sure Skyrim will take up plenty of my time when I get around to it.

Only thing I picked up during the sale was Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty. I needed to spend $5 to reach the next Rewards tier, and it was a toss up between that and Song of the Deep. Went with the cheaper one. Also got $150 XBL credit from Staples, so I'm well stocked for end of year sales and 6% back from Rewards.

Already had most of the stuff I would've been interested in (Forza Horizon 3, Gears 4, Arkham Knight, Shadow of Mordor, RotTR, Mega Man, Ori). Only got a little into Skyrim on the 360, so the price on the remaster will need to be lower before I backlog it. Fallout 4 can come down more as well (odd pricing on that since Deluxe = $55, Game + Season Pass = $49.79). The BioShock and Arkham remasters can come down farther before I buy them.

Speaking of rewards tiers, when does that reset? I need to spend another $300 to get to 4 stars. From what I am seeing is it June 30th? Or the end of the year? I think I can hit that if it's June 30th, if it's the end of the year that's looking doubtful...

Final Haul:

:xb1: TF2/BF1 deluxe ed combo

:xb1: Hitman complete season 1

:xb1: Recore

That's the pretty standard difference between Western RPGs and JRPGs. Have you ever played a JRPG you liked? Also, I'm curious which FF games you played that didn't resonate with you, because there are some drastic differences across the series.

Oh we're still doing bf hauls? I picked up,

Recore $10
Gears 4 $20
Mgs collection 24.99
Doom $15
Mad max $8
Bioshock collection $30 + $5 3 month card @ bb
And 2 more 3 month cards for 12.49 ea at dollar general

If you guys wonder where recore and gears were for those prices, it was at the navy exchange. Priced matched the rest of it minus bioshock and the monthly cards for a total of $78. We also have coins for certain games and some recore socks for people who buy recore.

This year might be the year were I didn't buy a lot of games on BF.

-The Division
-Battleborn
-Assassins Creed Syndicate
-Oddworld New N Tasty
-A Nintendo 3DS that seems to be stuck in limbo at Walmart.

Reminder: Incoming sale on Game Award nominees or winners. Bloomy might have to work overtime (if the deals go live tonite.)
It'll probably be the same games we had on Black Friday except with a 5-15% discount. Plus maybe if we are lucky enough they'll throw in some NBA Jewelry and GTA Shark Cards.
