Talking to my cable company they have a device to rent for $3/mo that gives you an access point at another cable jack in the house so I can have everything wired. I'm curious to see if it will perform like they're boasting.

That sounds like powerline networking which you can buy at bestbuy, amazon, etc. You may want to consider paying a flat fee for it rather than paying to rent it.

 
Speaking about renting devices, any suggestions on the best wireless routers/modem all in one? We have AT&T fiber optics and renting & using a Arris NVG589. We cut the cord and don't have cable anymore, we just stream everything on our consoles and laptops. I think it's time to purchase our own router/modem but not sure which is good yet. Any suggestions or what are y'all using? Thanks

Yeah, anything that let's you distance yourself from their monthly fees is a good thing. In this case just use a Wifi range extender. I grabbed this one a year ago, have been able to use internet all around the big house, other models give you more features and perks for the price. You can also connect wired to it.

Cat 5e is really cheap. If you have a basement just drill some holes in the floor and run it through there!

I'm in Florida, so no basement. The range extender limits my speed as I understand it. It's noticeable between my N router and the wire. I'm not a fan of paying them more, but at least I can get a look at what their device is to get one myself. Speed is what I'm tuning, not coverage.

The tech is coming out to look at why my Wi-Fi will randomly drop for a moment and so I can try and talk them into giving me an AC router.

You said it's like $3 a month? For that price I would certainly give it a try for a month. Mainly because how well they work is highly dependent upon the quality of your wiring. Some folks it works great for, some it doesn't.

I bought a pair of Actiontech Moca adapters.   They were on sale at NewEgg for $84 but currently go for $114 on Amazon and NewEgg.  They also sell other versions with a 4 port Ethernet switch built in but I couldn't find a decent deal on them when I was buying.

I assume you don't have FiOS nor a Tivo Romanio or newer.  If you have either you only need one adapter as the FiOS router or newer Tivo setups a Moca Network.

Pretty much plug and play.  Anywhere you have a live cable/Fios coax cable will work.  Doesn't work with DirecTV/Dish.

On cable you should pick up the filter they mention further down the page.  It blocks the Moca network from going out to your neighbors.  You can optionally set a passphrase (like on wireless) but really should be needed if you use the filter.

Filter not needed on FiOS.

I have had it about a year now and once I had to restart one of them.  Otherwise works great.

I have the same problem, also in FL. We started paying Brighthouse a few bucks extra a month for their "echo" service but I haven't noticed any difference.
 
I struggled for years with internet in my home.  I have a fairly large house and tried all kinds of routers, range extenders, MOCA, etc.  I finally sprang for Ethernet to be installed in several rooms which was such a nice upgrade rather than having to mess with Wifi issues to various consoles and boxes around the house.  I was still unhappy with the Wifi coverage and sprang for a Netgear Nighthawk router.  I kind of assumed the router advertised features were mostly a marketing gimmick, but I actually couldn't be happier with it.  The speed, range, and stability is significantly better than anything I've ever used.  If I had purchased one before I wired Ethernet, I probably would have never bothered wiring anything.  I highly recommend spending the money on a Nighthawk router if you can fit it in your budget.  It will eliminate most of your Wifi issues without much hassle.

Google OnHub could be a slightly cheaper option ($200 MSRP, regularly on sale) and is AC1900 and I enjoy mine a lot. I have two stories and ~3400 sqft with no dead zones, even decent coverage in the driveway and the backyard. Now if I could just get my internet service to behave...
 
If I am not mistaken, you also use a second router as a repeater/wifi extender/wireless access point in a lot of cases.

I had to get creative with the single Ethernet port as well. I was fortunate enough to find the 5-port TP-Link all metal gigabit switch at NFM for a very reasonable price so I have one in the room with the router (and U-verse gateway, NAS, primary :360: and secondary :xb1:) and one in my office across the way connected with CAT 5E.

I like being able to manage the router from the app and delegate management to my wife (although she'll probably never install the app :) ), but the management of the router is pretty barebones. Also, I think there are a few features on the router that haven't been enabled yet because the software isn't ready.

 
I'm legit bummed that so many of the remasters I want to play now are still several weeks away: Bioshock Collection, Dead Rising bundle, Skyrim Special Edition, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Resident Evil 4.....

Remasters seem tailor-made for the long drought that is the summer release schedule.  Why release these things when there's immense marketplace competition?  (Is Fall really that much more profitable than all the other seasons....)

Haven't been impressed with what we've seen from backward compatibility this summer, either.  We got Fallout: New Vegas in late June, Red Dead Redemption in early July, and....filler, as far as I'm concerned.

The answer to your last paragraph lies in your first paragraph. I really don't think the shitty BC lineup is Microsoft's fault. Ubisoft and Sega seem to be the only companies besides Microsoft that's taking BC seriously. People are buying the remasters in your first paragraph, so we're stuck with what's in your last paragraph.

 
Even though I don't own FC3:BD at all (disc or digital), I had it in my Ready to Install section the day it went BC.  Maybe I should play it before they yank it.

 
Shank 2 is a really fun game. I remember it being pretty difficult. Far Cry Blood Dragon may be the best "filler" game they've made bc so far.

Honestly, I'm most excited about getting to play WWE16 next week.

I think there's some truth to that. But EA supposedly is the exception; their E3 2015 comments shooting down Bioware remaster talk was - for me - disappointing. I would happily pay $60 for the Mass Effect trilogy and its DLC. But if that isn't an option, I'd like to see ME2 and ME3 come to BC soon. (We learned in May that Microsoft figured out multi-disc issues.)

Remember those Amazon digital game purchases for Xbox One BC that showed up before E3 - with release dates of June 15th? I would have bought half of those if that had come to pass, too.

The Mass Effect trilogy remastered is something I'd pay for if the price was right. Even though I have all the DLC for all three games, ME1 was barely even playable on 360 unless the disc was installed. And even then, it just ran like crap, and it happens to be my favorite of the trilogy. And if they added a working quest log to ME3, holy crap, that would be an awesome set.

There's been several games announced awhile back that still aren't BC. Burnout Paradise was even tweeted about (by a dev, I believe?) looooong ago. I'm assuming the game is remaster-fodder at this point. It's just way to profitable for them to NOT remaster it.

I don't really care about what goes BC at this point. I'll never get rid of my 360 because I know there's no chance in hell all my essential games will go BC. And I refuse to buy a remaster unless it's $10 or less ($5 or less if I already own it on 360 and includes DLC I don't own). I just really want people to stop being okay with us getting blatantly raped with the remaster announces, and a semi-successful BC lineup would have been a sure-fire way to do it. Don't pre-order a game you already bought last-gen. Buy something new. I bitch about this a lot but it's because I totally believe at some point the Xbox One marketplace is going to consist of 75% Xbox 360 games with an anti-aliasing feature tacked on.

As much as I bitch about the lack of BC titles - and I do bitch a lot - I love the effort from their software engineers. They keep plugin' away: with performance updates to games, improvements to store discovery, and even fun wrinkles like this.

Keep doin' what you're doin', team.
