XBox Dashboard Update 11/01/10 (Formerly: Xbox Live Preview Program)

The update to the update also seems to have fixed an error where the battery life for wireless mics was not showing.
 
Ok, so the live Texas A&M vs OK State game that was on the ESPN channel last night let you vote on who you think would win if you bring up the ticker bar. That was sort of cool.

The net feed seems to be about 2-3 minutes behind the television feed. No big deal. Nice to have the Tivo-ish features of being able to restart the live game if you want to see the whole thing while it's in progress (and then jump back to the live feed if you want).
 
Some of the fonts and spacing of elements on the dash, in general, still seems a little off. I don't know why they don't lower the "bar" (literally) so you can see more of the themes you're using (especially if you are using personal photos for backdrops).

Really impressed with the ESPN integration. Excellent quality, works great, beats watching it on my laptop anytime. I realize those who aren't into sports could care less, but for those who do, it's a real asset for Xbox owners to have.
 
I agree with you about lowering the main navigation to occupy the lower third of the screen. That would allow for more of the vertical navigation to be shown as well.

I don't know if I haven't noticed this before (with NXE) but there seems to be an awfully large gap to the left of everything.

Overall I like the cleaner look, with the linear format and sharper corners (I also like the new fonts, but I could see where it could be a problem for smaller TVs).
 
The avatar items I have paid for, currently on my avatar (pre-update) are now starting to show up. Everything aside from my Lost Planet 2 outfit is showing up. Looks like they are starting to get this squared away.

They aren't going to.

Part of the new beta was that they upgraded the codec to be much higher quality (it's like skype now), using a higher bitrate. This is why they had warning signs all over the sign up page about it.

There was/is no reason for them to go through all the development and QA to make it backwards compatible just for one month.
 
The Whole Interface GUI is more plain now less CPU and graphically intensive and way less eye candy. Its like a step backwards visually.

Why?

Because KINECT needs to CPU and GPU power that was once dedicated to the Dashboard Interface. So Microsoft stripped the Dashboard down and gave it this new sparse clean theme.

I thought they said only party chat will not be available. I don't recall them saying anything about private chat

I just went to customize my avatar and it updated some clothes, had to wait as a progress bar filled up. Still couldnt use my ticker, gears 3 suit, or hoffman hat. But i was able to use my assassins creed outfit. Avatars still look weird to me, they look more like PSN home avatars than Mii's now.

My stuff still shows the exclamation point.. (even though i saw that updating avatar items progress bar)
 
The avatar items update process is invoked every single time that I exit the editor and go back in. Either they are actually updating things bit by bit as the update time/size varies or it's an infinite loop type situation. (they seem to be adding in the paid items before the free awards I've noticed)

Yup just checked it again: Go to customize avatar and let it sit for a couple of seconds and it invokes the update, save and exit, go back to customize avatar, and *poof* the update runs again. Not that they couldn't be updating stuff constantly but it seems more like an infinite loop to this cowpoke. (well that and not a single one of my awards or props ever actually displays despite the constant updating...damned freebies :p)
 
So I tried to watch the Wisconsin - Michigan State game on the xbox (it has spoiled me now, on xbox you don't have to put up with espn jumping to other games that I don't care about) but it gave me a pop up saying the game isn't available in my area.

This shouldn't be a problem too much as most college games I'll want to watch on espn3 will be Louisville games I normally wouldn't be able to see living in Big10 country.

didn't espn3 that we are watching on our xbox 360 used to be called espn360? coincidence?
 
Nothing more than a coincidence actually. Espn changed the name of espn360 a few months ago to espn3 across the board in what I assume was just to make it in line with their other two stations in case they want to change it to a broadcast station later.

I can accept that, considering without it I wouldn't be able to watch the game (unless you found a stream online, which is usually a few minutes behind live anyway)

Well I root for Miami and this year they have showed all but one game in my area(Dallas). The only advantage is I get to watch it in HD on my monitor I play my xbox on. Otherwise I can only watch it in SD through my TV. For any other game I would not care, but I like to be up to date on my Canes.
 
watching the Lakers - FC Barcelona game and it looks like they are showing commercials now instead of the "standby" message it showed during commercials

I haven't watched a live game lately to see if it does this, will find out tomorrow when I watch the Louisville football game on the xbox
 
the only update i've gotten since the launch of this was for netflix today but I didn't notice anything different. any word on what the update(s) are for/do?
 
I noticed there's a new camera effect on themes. Go into change theme and you'll see them. The avatar stuff updated when I went in there earlier without the error message but some things are still unavailable. They re-did the games marketplace as well trying to make it easier to find things and the glitch when you went into look at all extras on a game and backed out, causing the Dashboard to become zoomed and off center is no longer happening. Dashboard is no longer the blinding white color.

I got an update as well. I'm now able to download stuff off the marketplace again. I also went into the avatar app and the update in there was successful. It still seems like everything I couldn't use before still can't be used after the update.
 
I wish the didn't change the layout of the marketplace this much, I liked hitting "game marketplace" and the first option up was "new arrivals" so i could skim through all the new stuff quick

The new marketplace layout is awful. I used to just go up the row of types looking at new arrivals. Now we have to go into each thing and pick "new stuff" or whatever. Big thumbs down on this change from me. I'll probably browse the marketplace from xbox.com that much more from now on.
 
I posted in there about how damn difficult it is to find a game by letter now. They have it in one big cluster fuck. You have to literally go through 5,400 games just to find the one you want to see if it has any dlc.
 
In one of the preview videos by microsoft they mention some new way that you can disable logins from other controllers (to help with keeping instruments from rock band/guitar hero plugged in all the time). But I can't find it anywhere.

Anyone know where to find it?
 
i knew going into this party chat wouldnt work but i guess private chat doesnt work as well, thats kind of a bummer.

At least you have ESPN....Still not getting with Time Warner cable even though they signed a contract to carry it almost a month ago.
