Actually I sold a GS gift card/EDGE card to someone from CL a year or two ago. I met them at a GS store down the line. I had the cashier check my balance on my card to verify what I had on there.

Then we went outside the store and the guy paid me what we had agreed upon.

I NEVER meet someone from CL in a parking lot or other open area and always make sure there are other people around when I'm making a deal.
 
I'm sure it's really rare to happen but if you guys ever buy a gift card (like Gamestop) on craigslist I buy a new gift card with it to ensure the original owner doesn't use the PIN to buy something online to scam me for the cash I paid.

Those show up in the milwaukee area with the exact same wording as well from a variety of retailers, not just gamestop.

It's some kind of common scam, or they just mug you for the cash when you arrive.

I am looking to purchase a clean, working Nintendo Gamecube system with the power cord, AV cable, and at least 1 original Nintendo-brand controller with it. So essentially the whole standard system.

I am not picky on color; I like silver and black best, but so long as it's working, clean, not messed up at all, I truly don't care about the color. A GQB w/cords & controller sells for $24 at Mega Media Xchange, so naturally I'm looking for a better deal than that. It's Craigslist after all, right?! :)

It's been turned on 4 times: once to become Ambassador, twice to take a couple pictures, and once to update and download all 22 games and play Xevius for under 5 minutes. I've just become an adult gamer who is quickly becoming a backlogger and not a gamer. The cradle has never come out of the box and the instructions have never come out of the bag. We probably registered it on club nintendo.

it's super strange that these are showing up nationally, not regionally, and with the exact same wording. It's probably just some scam artist trying to post it all over the country and sell the gift cards via email or paypal and run a very simple scam, hoping people are dumb enough to buy into it.
 
The GameStop gift card scam?

I was giving this some thought the other day with all the recent gift cards I see posted on craigslist. I read some that stated they would meet you at a GameStop store to verify the value on the card and that they wouldn't e-mail you anything such as the number & pin.

Aren't the GameStop giftcards redeemable online. You just need the number on the card and the pin. I've never used one myself so I'm not certain.

Anyway, supposedly a person did meet up with you at the store location and you verify that there is indeed value on the card. So you pay them an agreed upon amount, usually less than the card value.

The person who just sold you the card has had it in their possession for awhile and they probably know the number and PIN. They could conceivably have a person on stand-by with a full cart online ready to place an order with the gift card you just purchased.

Perhaps just paranoia on my part, I dunno. The person who you don't know -- not even where they live, since you met up at the GameStop steps out the door and one quick cell phone call to a buddy at the computer and he clicks order. The value of the gift card that you just verified is quickly down to $0.

Possible? What recourse would you have if that was to happen to you?

Technically you could do that with just about any store.
I don't think I will be buying GCs from any strangers in the future. Perhaps ebay, where you've got buyer protection.

But what's so weird is that these scams are worded the exact same in a variety of locations around the country. That's what doesn't make sense. If it's one person doing it, are they traveling out of state when they do find some sucker who wants to show up with $500 for their Gamestop/Home Depot/Target/WTF gift card?

It's gotta be something more than the basic scam to be popping up all over craigslist in different regions, some online scam or something. Never any phone #s posted either, just the same poorly worded text "need cash so grab it for cheap" with the minimum of effort put into the ad.

The only way to legitimately buy a gift card off someone on craigslist is to have them meet you at the store, have the items you want to buy ready at the register, and use the gift card for your purchase right then and there before they leave/ before you give them the cash.
 
I would think that most of these gift card deals are just to get e-mail addresses or to point you in the direction of some BS site to supposedly earn a free gift card and not some local trying to offload a used gift card on somebody.
