The 2013-14 NFL Thread

Matt Flynn was horrible today. Really starting to question Mckenzie's eye for talent as his draft pics haven't exactly been stunning or solid.

Maybe not in September and October, but in December and January? Sure.
Sure, it'll take more time to see whose defense will be up to the challenge since the first few weeks are always a bit chaotic for defenses as they figure out the new offenses and playmakers out there. It's more likely that they'd get beaten by another high power offense than a great defense.

The refs are having a really rough night in Atlanta.  Just blew a spot of the ball when it was clear the Patriots got a first down.  Between that and a couple other calls, they've basically single-handedly let Atlanta back into the ballgame.

That was some replacement official stupidity. How the hell did they think Blount didnt get that 1st down. it also doesn't help the 1 good camera angle that showed it clear as day was only shown once but yet they kept showing that god awful angle that makes it seem like the refs were correct.

That's the thing, with virtually no running game, Manning has to be perfect (or the Broncos D has to wipe out any mistakes). That's a tall order over the course of 19 games.
I wouldn't say avg. 120 yards a game is "no running game" . The don't have a dominant back, tho

Manning and the boys will do the same thing they do every year. 13-3 or 14-2. The question for Manning is always what he will do in the playoffs

Wilfork done for the year.
Just a brutal blow for a defense which has been playing pretty well this year. Other than Brady (and maybe Talib at this point) Wilfork is the most irreplaceable guy on the team. They were pretty thin at DT to begin with, they're surely going to have to bring someone in. I'd love to see a Richard Seymour reunion, but I doubt he wants to play for as little as the Pats would probably want to pay him.

Wilfork done for the year, Locker 4-8 weeks.
Yeah, the Locker situation is really weird. Still no word in what Is actually wrong. Xray was negative. MRI hasn't come back or been announced. All they said is it's not as bad as initially feared...but 4-8 weeks is still a pretty big range.

This article sums up my feelings on the Broncos right now.

Does anyone have even the slightest chance of slowing down Peyton Manning's march to a Super Bowl title? Have we written this exact same sentence, like, 9 out of the past 10 years? How did that work out? Who knows! We have no memory.
This article from the same author has him arguing that Lane Kiffin will propel Flacco to the Super Bowl, the Jaguars should use their Twitter feed for a drinking game, and that old-school Browns QB Milt Olhm is better than Peyton Manning.

Outside of the opening drive, the Dolphins are doing pretty well.

Is it just me, or when either team has a running play, do they get 9+ yards with minimal touches, or stuffed at the line for little gain?

EDIT: Of course, as soon as I praise the Dolphins, the Saints get an INT.

Peyton has won a championship so you can't really hold it against him. His teams have just had bad defense more often than not.
His teams have also notoriously underachieved in the post season as well. He does not play well in December and January. Still probably one of the greatest quarterbacks ever though but you can't deny he has consistently been surrounded by a talented receiver core his entire career.

We all know how this season's Peyton Manning story is most likely going to end. A loss in the playoffs.

Also thanks for nothing Schaub.

Wow, so a 2nd MRI confirms that Jake Locker has no major damage. No fractures and no torn ligaments. They're saying he suffered both a sprained knee (MCL) and a sprained hip on the play. I'm guessing it must have just scared the shit out of him for the entire right side of his lower body to be in that much pain instantly, and that's why he stayed completely still. Hopefully this won't keep him out the 8 weeks like they were thinking. I was worried about a Locker injury happening at some point, but I sure as hell didn't think it would happen while he was in the pocket.

Peyton's career QB rating in December is 99.0, compared to a 96.5 mark for his career.

Yes he has, but a lot of those were to superior teams honestly. The Patriots and Ravens right? I'm not a Colts/Broncos fan so I don't remember too well
I think you can pretty much attribute 99% of Peyton's post season failures to the Patriots/Ravens/Steelers. He wasn't facing weak defenses. That's for sure.

Eh, I would be hard pressed to call the Ravens superior last year. And this is coming from a Ravens fan. They didn't actually start playing excellent football until the Indy game. They were essentially the football version of the 2011 St. Louis Cardinals.

And if one player from Denver knew how to cover a deep ball late in the game, the Broncos would have won.

Surprised they didn't try to stretch it out.

I do expect him to be signed somewhere shortly. Jacksonville, Cleveland, and Oakland are my Top 3.

I don't see Cleveland being interested in paying a lot of money for Josh Freeman when they're winning on the cheap with Brian Hoyer unless they're surprisingly in love with him. If they want a new QB, they'll get one in next year's draft since it'll be cheap and easily expendable if they don't work out. It's interesting how much the changes to draft salaries has changed how teams handle their rookies now, as they don't mind throwing them out to the wolves earlier than teams would've done so even four or five years ago.

It's a shame the Buffalo game isn't happening during snow season so we could get another great snow bowl.

Yeah...about Hoyer...

That was the worst goal line series I've ever seen, but it finally resulted in a TD after 50 plays in the last ten yards.

Also, Travis Benjamin finally breaks it for a TD punt return!

Yeah...about Hoyer...
You mean Hoyer isn't the next Drew Brees?

Both starting quarterbacks are out of the game with knee injuries, Browns RB Chris Ogbonnaya is out with a head injury, and Browns DE Desmond Bryant has been taken to the hospital with shortness of breath, so to say this game isn't kind to either team is an understatement.

TJ Ward gets the pick six to seal the win!

The new rumor about an 18 game season only lets players play a max of 16 games, which is an intriguing way to get around that problem. The only issue I have is that it sort of ruins the whole "X has played every snap of his career" streaks that healthy players are proud to keep going.

QB controversy brewing in Cleveland over who sucks the least.
They suck so much that they can win with either QB.

Remember when the Browns traded TR and "punted on the season?"
The only good thing that trade did for them is light a fire under their asses to prove the haters wrong. The first round pick is nice, but that doesn't help them right now. The running game is as bad, if not worse, than it was before.

But you see how valuable a RB is to win/losses
Cleveland's run blocking is really bad. Trent Richardson will probably be a productive RB for a few years, but he's not a world-beater when it comes to lateral agility, acceleration, or breakaway speed. With a bad run-blocking OL, someone like McGahee won't be appreciably worse than Richardson.

That sounds needlessly complicated.

I feel bad for schaub after that taint. As awful as that pick 6 was, he definitely got too much heat from fans for a week 4 regular season game.

.
It's not about week 4. It's the rising anger from a fan base that thinks the only thing standing between the Texans and many rings is Schaub and Kubiak.

They'd basically have to expand the roster if they did something like that. Probably to something like 65-72 players, which is insane.  If they went with 18 games, they'd also have to adopt 2 bye weeks.
