The 2013-14 NFL Thread

Josh Freeman is signing with Minnesota.
My initial reaction was no, then I realized he can't possibly be worse than Ponder. Then again, why aren't they at least giving Cassel more than just the 1 game to see if he's got the stuff?

Edit- Just spent about half an hour reading up on Freeman's split from Tampa Bay and holy shit is that some absolutely bonkers news. It seems like Schiano has been setting him up to fail for at least this entire season and preseason with there even being rumors he rigged the team captain voting to strip Freeman of it... Wow, that's some absolutely crazy happenings.

Freeman is a headcase. Enjoy him Minnesota. Schiano gave him every chance to succeed. It is one excuses after another for Josh Freeman. Oh he's had too many coordinators, too many coaches, too many systems, not enough weapons....Here's some advice for Josh: Grow up. He still makes rookie mistakes in his 5th year. He stares down 1 receiver every play. Last few years it was Kellen WInslow and now it's Vincent Jackson. I'm so glad he's gone. He showed his true self when he got benched. Josh and his agent did everything possible to get him released. His accuracy sucks. He folds under pressure. He's not a team leader. HE IS NOT A FRANCHISE QB. Period.

People can sh*t on Schiano all they want. He's made some mistakes sure, but he has rebuilt the Bucs defense into something to be reckoned with. His first two drafts have been awesome. He just needs to find a Qb and a real offensive coordinator because MIke Sullivan is awful. The media doesn't like Schiano because he doesn't talk to them. He's just like Billicheck. Only difference is Bill B drafted Tom Brady and the rest is history...

Don't remember Belichek bum rushing the Opposing V formation in NY, Cleveland, or NE.

Sorry not a Schiano fan.

Oh the stupid unwritten rules. You know if it worked it would be something that every does. If that's really why people don't like him that's fine, but that's a lame reason. Why should a team concede defeat? It's dumb. People still crap on Bellicheck for spygate, but no one cares because he wins.

Is it safe to call Flynn a journeyman now?

People kept saying Oakland needed Freeman, but Terrelle Pryor is playing pretty well right now.
Pryor looked good last night (this morning----hopefully that is the end of SNF that goes well past 2AM EST). He played much better then I expected.

What would have happened if Peyton had gone to one of the other 31 teams?

I particularly like these:

Tampa Bay: Greg Schiano wouldn't run his starting quarterback out of town, and if he tried to, he would be fired. By his starting quarterback.

Jacksonville: Manning would give the Jaguars their first true franchise player in history and get them into the playoffs. Although some Jaguars fans would still demand the team sign and start Tim Tebow.

Arizona: America would no longer be wasting one of its finest natural resources in Larry Fitzgerald.

Baltimore: Joe Flacco wouldn't have a Super Bowl ring, making the world less confusing.

Buffalo: Manning and the Bills would be in the process of losing four consecutive Super Bowls, because nothing ever works out perfectly for Buffalo sports.

Oakland: In reality the Raiders didn't go after Manning because they were settled on Carson Palmer. Instead of playing a what-if fantasy game, let's just let that reality settle in.

Pittsburgh: Todd Haley's play calls would be getting ignored even more than they are now.

Cleveland: Manning would probably blow out his knee or something, because Cleveland is Cleveland.

Atlanta: The Falcons would have a great regular season, and then probably lose at home in the playoffs. So no change.

New York Giants: Manning Family Thanksgivings would be very awkward.

Please tell me I am not the only one who misheard "Muhammed Wilkerson leads the Jets in sacks" as "Muhammed Wilkerson leads the Jets in sex."

Whatever luck the Jets had left has officially disappeared from this game.

Never mind.

Sorry, I don't have a single link because I had to piece together the story from multiple stories. I mainly Googled links with the search string "Tony Schiano Josh Freeman"

Greg Schiano was a terrible hire when it happened and he's thoroughly proved it since.

And he isn't the GM so I wouldn't heap the player moves praise all on him.

^ This.

I hate jumping to conclusions, but let's be realistic here: Schiano is terrible. As a lifelong Bucs fan, I'm ashamed to even admit that these days -- and not because of the losing record, because we all know Tampa Bay's history -- but all of this BS is just outright ridiculous. Mike Glennon certainly isn't the answer at QB, but neither was Freeman. The way Freeman was driven out of town (tarred, feathered, lit on fire and left to burn) reminds me of how they ran out Tony Dungy, and it sickens me to even think about it.

Schiano should be canned before the season comes to a close... but he won't. Why? Because the Glazers are bumbling idiots -- a fuck ing embarrassing excuse of ownership, and now I (kind of) know how Browns fans feel after all these years. Sorry, Cleveland.

Crazy to think about but Matt Shaub's INTs account for 1/3rd of the total points scored against the Texans so far.  Already sounds like there's a crisis of confidence.

As a 49er fan I know first hand that of you don't have a good owner, you are seriously screwed as a fan. And there's nothing you can do about who owns your team. It's shitty.

I'm not gonna pile on Schiano cause his job speaks for itself, but why would anyone have thought he was a good hire? He made it to bowl games with Rutgers in a mediocre at best Big East. Randy Edsall would have been more qualified, honestly.

Crazier to think about:

Peyton Manning matched Schaub's 4 pick-sixes in 4 games achievement in 2010.

And it only took Peyton 2 games to reach it.

The Schiano hiring made no sense to anyone when it happened, and he has done nothing to make anyone change their minds. Wrap your mind around this for a moment: he had a 68-67 record at Rutgers. People can argue all they want that he "turned" the program around and made them "relevant." The reality is, he was one game above .500 playing in a fairly weak football conference and compiled a bunch of bowl game "wins" against cruddy schools in a nonsense bowl games.

So when do I stop actually thinking the Giants can win the NFC East?  This is the worst season I can remember - and I watched every snap of Dave Brown's career with the Giants!

If they can win a game soon, they'll be in the race since nobody else is able to win enough to pull away from the crowd. Pittsburgh's already out of it since everybody else in the AFC North is winning.

That's bad, but it could be a whole lot worse. At the very least, you have some big name stars, like AP and Cruz, as well as interesting storylines (Eli's utter breakdown, the QB carousel in Minny, etc.) Now, a Jags/Bills game...now that would be bad!

So this is what happens when you sell your soul to win 2 all-time great SBs in 5 years...  this is just unbelievable and depressing on so many levels.  At least I can watch the 2007 DVD any time I want.

You might be on to something here. The Steelers also won 2 SBs recently and they find themselves in a similar predicament.

As a Giants fan, I'll take a season like this if it means winning 2 SBs every 5 years or heck even every decade. That said, I'm totally at a loss for words to explain what's happening out there. Our OL and DL have been dreadful this season. JR has lots of work to do this offseason. This very well might turn into a rebuilding project depending on how much deadwood they get rid off. Also, it doesn't help that we have a ton of money tied up in the skill positions.

I've never seen a team fall apart like this.

Me neither. I could understand 2-4 or 3-3 because they have been terrible but to be 0-6 is shocking. How many teams in NFL history have started 0-6? I bet it isn't that many. It seems like something catastrophic happens at exactly the wrong time in every single game (except the Panthers game which was in and of itself a catastrophe). Last night if that ball is 6 inches lower it is caught or even gets tipped in a different direction and not intercepted (that second Marshall TD was shit by the way - total push-off). They have been generating absolutely no pressure on the opposing QB and Eli has about a second to get rid of the ball but they have too many above average skill players to be this bad. Say goodbye to Nicks though - Randle is totally stepping up. They should trade him to a contender that is thin at WR for a 3rd round pick or something.

I was switching between the Giants and Rutgers game last night and I went nuts when I saw the Marshall TD. Bad call, but such is life. The game was ours to win. Meyers got two hands on the ball that's on him. Was it a perfect throw by Eli? No, but the old adage is that if you get two hands on it you have to catch the ball.

We are getting nothing out of Tuck, Beatty and Baas. Snee has been injured. Rolle although good is highly overpaid. IMO, they should get rid of all of them to have some wiggle room financially. Eli will have to take a paycut (ie restructure) as well. Hopefully, we get our first W next week.

It kills me that they won both of those. I've never felt Eli was elite and hate that he has more rings then Peyton...just doesn't seem right kinda like Marino never getting a ring.

Eli isn't elite, but he has put together two of the best playoff runs ever. At the end of the day, as a fan, I'll take those two great runs over a guy who constantly puts up absurd regular season numbers, but the team never gets over the hump.

Despite the one interception, this has been a good half for the Browns offense. Weeden's making very few mistakes, the run game has gotten off to a good start, and the playcalling has done a good job with variety and not stubbornly doing the same things over and over if they're not working. Just look at their two goal line sets of downs where they run it up the middle for no gain and a TD pass happens on the next play.

Ouch. Schaub goes down and then Yates gets picked off for a 98 yard TD

omg Yates got picked off in the red zone again

I think all the Texans fans just checked the calendar to see when the Rockets start the season.
Hahaha!!! I don't have to check my calendar, I know when basketball season starts!

But it's getting really painful to watch these games knowing how much talent is on this team. At least I have my good friend alcohol to get me through the pain lol.
