Vanilla D3 goes as far as level 60. RoS lifts the level cap to level 70. My point is that there's nothing wrong with Vanilla, but it'll be a very lonely experience. Diablo shines when you can just hop in and out of a group.

Plus Adventure Mode keeps things fresh. Playing the story over and over got boring real quick when it was first released.
I think it really depends on what you're going into D3 for. If you're like me or MysterD, you'll never get close to that cap because you'll play once, maybe load RoS and play the fifth chapter and piddle around in Adventure Mode a little bit (I'm guessing that's probably what I'll do because I don't have RoS yet) and then you'll be done with it.

I understand that this type of player is SERIOUSLY in the minority among the D3 community, but for that type of player, RoS really is an optional extra. OTOH, for the average D3 player, I think you make a strong case for RoS being vital to the game's longevity.

I'm still unsure if Claptrap is going to be crazy fun or just plain crazy...

Edit: Having to get a Second Wind when you are 4+ levels above the enemies around you...fail.

Do they still have that idiotic minimum purchase amount with PayPal payments?

I know what you're saying but in this case the expansion is vital.

D3 vanilla will give you a solid playthrough or two of the main storyline and that's pretty much it. Chances of you meeting somebody to play with on the way are pretty low as everybody is either a) in Adventure Mode or b) at level 70.

Diablo is a game about grinding for better gear and taking on an incrementally harder challenge. It's fun in a way that grinding should not, ever, be. Thats the endgame and without RoS there is no endgame for you.

If people want to try D3 by buying Vanilla first, that's not a bad idea, but playing the story will only get you so far. To get the real experience you need the expac.

Sidenote: As somebody who gets interrupted by wife/son issues on a regular basis, D3 is perfect for playing in bite-size chunks. Considering how flawed the game was at launch, it's nothing short of remarkable what they've done with it since then.
I agree w/ this 100%.

RoS w/ Adventure Mode is a big-time game-changer.

Hmn. The only one I kind of want is Mr. Bree (missed the previous bundles) but I certainly don't $1.49 want it.

Unrelated prattle:

Also, played some of the Guildwars 2 trial the last few days. It's ... a mmo. Didn't love it, didn't hate it.. definitely not buying it any time soon (over $10). The GF wanted top play the 'cute' asura race and we both rolled Engineers, so I don't know if I got a real view of the game. One thing I did appreciate was not having to talk to, or return to, NPCs for the majority of the quests we did. Also kind of liked the open to all encounters that sprang up everywhere while we were playing. But neither one of us had any investment whatsoever in the story or game world. :full-body shrug:

She's kind of in a MMO mood right now, and I think she has her sights set on trying DC Universe (I had tried it years back on PS3) so that's probably how I'll be spending my weekend. I wonder if anyone's taken the name Batman yet.

so that's "UNPLAYABLE"? that sound like you just described Diablo 2 and that game is w/o adventure mode and that game is very much playable. What we have now for vanilla D3 is very much viable and ppl who invest $ into will have many more hours of fun to come. I would think ROS expansion is just the icing on top and not "a must have" to get a playable experience of the Diablo world.
D3: RoS (expansion) is a must-have experience.

Without RoS - you have no reason to go back + restart. As usual w/ these kind of ARPG's, the story + character depth is not spectacular - and playing the campaign only gets you so far. Do you really wanna go through the quite linear experience over + over again? It's not like D3 (vanilla base-game) is an open-world game or has such a mode.

RoS changes that. With RoS, once you finish the Campaign - you unlock Adventure Mode. Adventure Mode is your end-game. You can take on Bounties, Challenges, Neph. Rifts - and grind more + more for better loot. Best of all is this - in Adventure Mode the game-world is now completely open for you, turning it into a complete open-world experience: so you take on anything you want + go anywhere you want at anytime. Bounties will turn-up new in areas or respawn, once you re-log into the game - so, there's always something to do.

EDIT:

While I'll probably never hit the cap - since tackling D3 + RoS campaign, but I still occasionally hop in for an hour or 2 here and there and run around in Adventure Mode w/ My WitchDoctor. For that type of game, where story ain't paramount + it's all about the loot - this is where the game shines.

Adventure Mode is what is making me still come back to this game, as it's easy to drop in and drop out - whether I play alone (most likely) or not.

All I know is I'm gonna Pirate Ship the Hell out of some Moon Psychos and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get some free Playfire monies for doing it.

Also I'm finally getting an upgrade from my GTX 460 to a GTX 770! YAY!

Curious - if you don't mind me asking, how much you dropping on that GTX 770?

Me personally? Not a dime. My brother bought me this card at this price though.

Sweet!

Always nice, when you are dropping $0. :D

I currently have a 1GB GeForce GTX 560 Ti.

Me, I'm waiting for a sale on a 4GB GF card.

What I really want - the 4GB GeForce GTX 970 Ti

Hopefully, something will ride around Black Friday 2014.

I'm definitely keeping my eyes open...

Not that anybody asked, but I'm running a 512 MB Nvidia GeForce GT 330M that's welded to my motherboard! Yay, Mac laptops!

That is a nice looking card. I needed a new card asap though so there wasn't much choice on waiting on better prices for better boards.

My 460 is near death and Watch Dogs plays like shit on it. Even at 1024x768 and at lowest settings I couldn't get it to run right.

It's pretty burnt out. It's nice that this board will be my first brand new out of the box Video card. Everything I've had before were hand me downs.

Bleh @ your 460 is dear death. That bites.

And that sucks that you couldn't even get WD PC running worth a damn.

I'm hoping that 770 turns things around for you.

All of these new + upcoming AAA games on the PC - M-E: SoM, The Evil Within, Watch Dogs, Ryse: Son of Rome, Dead Rising 3, etc - seems to be aiming for the moon w/ wanting higher requirements, with the new-gen of consoles finally here.

Yeah...ftfy.
This always seems to happen, when the new-consoles are pretty much becoming the starting base-line for games - where the PC requirements highly jump up suddenly across the boards; and when dev's seem to not push older console-versions nearly as much or just not even put out versions of said game for the older-console.

Plus, I guess AMD + NVidia probably needed some major sales push w/ Christmas not too far away, as well. ;)

WTF is a GTX 970 Ti? What you really want to do is buy a nice, "nearly brand new" MSI N780 Lightning from one of the finest CAGs on earth. I heard he has was offering up a hell of a deal. I happen to know for a fact it was used only on Sundays to play minesweeper and kept in the box the rest of the time.

Wait a sec. 8-week buffer rule?

Then why the hell does Magicka go on sale like once a month?
That's only for custom discounts. Magicka tends to be features as a daily/midweek/weekend deal, which is decided by Valve still (and I guess they really like Magicka).

EDIT: MADJOKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!

Looks like the minimum specs for The Evil Within were finally posted.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/268050/

  • Minimum:
    OS: 64-bit Windows 7 SP1/Windows 8.1
  • Processor: i7 or an equivalent with four plus core processor
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Graphics: GTX 460 or equivalent 1 GB VRAM card
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Hard Drive: 50 GB available space
  • Additional Notes: It’s worth noting that the 50 GB of space required is for the PC install. When the installation is complete, the game will take up ~41 GB of HDD space

Looks like I'll at least be able to play it in some form. When it's cheaper. So that's good.

It applies only to self-served discounts (weeklongs), with special sales exempt (seasonal sales).

EDIT: MADJOKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!
The only reason Magicka goes on sale so often... must be that someone in the dev team has some blackmail material somewhere.

I know nobody cares but I just played through Canyon Capers to get the Playfire stuff and my god what a wretched game that is. It's purely oldschool Amiga-styled gameplay, all floaty and full of unfair one-hit kills outta nowhere, and a weird attack system. If you jump on an enemy, it dies, but if you jump on two enemies that are occupying the same space at the same time, you kill one but get hurt by the other? What kind of logic is that? Too bad we won't be getting a Huckleberry Hound character DLC. Ah well, at least I got the game for free and I got one British buck for the trouble.

I also went ahead and got the last achievements in Blackwell Convergence and Unbound 'cause I'm an achievement whore so blah.

Edit:

Incidentally, Enhanced Steam now shows you if a game has Playfire rewards!
