CAGiversary!

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2
OH NO! I WANTED THE KING KONG STRATEGY GUIDE!!!! WHAT HAVE I DONE!?!?!?

Who the hell needs strategy guides anyway...seriously. gamefaqs.com
THe only way i would request trade for your guides is if i ran out of toilet paper at my house. I could wipe my ass with all 6 of the x-men strat guides for about a month. point is, let some other people buy them instead of you being a fucken asshole. "wiped clean." because u are a freak who collects video guides.
OMGZ, im a freak too!

Eh, I have a big stack of strategy guide for games I own but I'm starting to wonder why I bother. I rarely need help with a game...and when I do get stuck or want to know something, I usually look online because a Google search is faster. I guess it's the collector in me...if I can get them cheap enough, they're kind of cool to have, especially the Nintendo ones as I'm a huge Nintendo fan and they often have some cool artwork in them.

Nice collection of guides Pookymeister. Now if Best Buy is pulling all their guides, I'm probably not going to be getting any more guides. BB was really the only one in the area I could score regularly at. Never had any luck at TRU. EB/GS I've never really been able to get any. I've always liked being able to get these for cheap. I wish my GS still sold used guides.

I just keep guides to games i own, mainly rpg's as i like the art work and having enemies databases and statistics at my fingertips. Honestly if your getting em for dirt cheap why not? Plus if i ever decide to trade my games having the guides increases the value.
trying to make me jelous eh. well take this punkymiester = P

my wife is much better at taking pictures. oh well.
Alot of those look familiar! I would have more but i usually only keep guides for games i have or plan on getting eventually(plus im about out of bookshelf space). I am envious of that Onimusha 3 special edition though

I think I've got around 150 guides now. I'm too lazy to post a photo. I think I've actually consulted a total of about a dozen pages when i've really gotten stuck in a game. Why do I have them then?

They're kind of like "postcards" for me. Souvenirs of a (virtual) trip that I've taken somewhere. Rather than replay the game, I can open the guide, skim through it, and maybe read about a mission or level that I really enjoyed. So now instead of investing the time to re-play the game, in five minutes, I can re-play it in my head for pretty much the same amount of pleasure.

Same... I'm about to dump alot of the guides I own, they are just taking up space. I don't need guides for shit like Socom 3 or Beat Down.

I think I'll just keep the guides for games I like and for RPG's.

got lucky. got it from a store where the boss is viligant about pulling them. unfortunately and fortuantely the store was closing and it was the 2nd to the last day before it closed so i took the huge drop from like Jan 28 and picked up like somewhere between 40-50 different guides. Oni 3 being one of them. From the looks of it you must either work at a game store, have a friend or good connection at one or you must buy several of these because you have many guides from your pic that would be hard to say the least to come across. Nice set.

5 dollars plus shipping. what do you say = P

Picked up some guides at Gamestop and Boscov's Clearance section:

Boscov's -
Jedi Knights II: Jedi Outcast (For trade)

Gamestop-
Shining Tears (may possibly keep)
Indigo Prophecy (for trade)
Matrix Path of Neo (for trade)
ME Getting Up (for trade)

My trade list is in my sig. PM if interested.

Oh, also wanted to add, check your local Target's for clearance guides... I already saw an MGS 3 Subsistence guide clearanced down to $7.48.
I need someone to explain this whole topic, what are there guides for $0.01?
videogame strategy guides are sold under a policy similar to magazines. since most people only want to buy guides for new games, the guides are usually kept on the stores shelves for only a few months. then the stores remove the guides from the shelves, throw them away, and get credit (for the ones they threw away) from the guide company to order newer guides. some chains (like gamestop, best buy, and toys r us) change the price to $0.01 in their system as a signal to their stores that it's time to throw away the guides, but some of their store locations have people working who are either too lazy or else they just DON'T KNOW they're supposed to take the guides off the shelf.

so that's where you have an opportunity. you might be able to find an old guide that a store forgot to throw away. if it rings up for $0.01, they might let you have it for that price... if they don't understand the guide policy, or if they just want to be nice to you. this thread is for people to share info about which guides have been marked $0.01 by which stores, so other people can know what to look for.

HOWEVER the stores are NOT REQUIRED to let you have the guide, since $0.01 is not the advertised price. they can just say "oh that's supposed to be returned to the publisher (a.k.a. thrown in the trash), it wasn't supposed to be on the shelf and we're not supposed to sell it" (which is actually the truth). it's just a matter of luck: sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

ALSO: i'm sure others have mentioned similar advice, but when i find a penny guide i usually say to the cashier something like "hey, could you please check the price on this for me? it's pretty old and i'm hoping that the price has dropped." they may or may not be completely surprised when they see the $0.01 price on the computer screen, but at least you've given them a hint ahead of time that the tag/cover price isn't correct.

OK for all of you scrambling around for the SWBFII guides, I've got some good news for you. I just got back from my local TRU, and while I was chatting it up with the employee, the manager handed him 2-3 sheets of price updates. I asked him if I could look at the sheets and he handed them over to me.

Among the pennied guides are:
SWBFII
007 From Russia With Love
Madden 06
NCAA Football 06
Jak X Combat Racing
Ratchet Deadlocked
Some Yugioh game

Good luck hunting them down!

When does this start?

Why can't we dig in the dumpster daily to find those guides? Then the store gets credit, you get a guide, and people get something at whom to stare.

This is effective IMMEDIATELY. As soon as I saw the list, I went over to the guides rack and picked up one of everything except for the Yugioh. So if you're interested in picking any of these up, go to TRU ASAP before they pull them off the shelves.

LMAO I wish I had a laptop with me with wireless internet, because tonight my one friend wanted to celebrate getting an offer for a good job with the govt, so we took a trip to NY state.

I was at a TRU up there that had multiple copies of EACH guide on that list dammit, had I known, I'd have grabbed at least one of each.

However, I did find a Pikmin 2 guide from a prior drop that they somehow missed and actually GOT it. FINALLY, an employee who doesn't go 'duhhhhh, i need to call a manager, this price can't be right, I have no brain of my own with which to think'. He just sold me the guide and said something like 'you got a good deal'.

I wish ALL TRU employees were like that.

well crap. I checked every day from Thursday to Sunday for the price changes and all that came up were price changes from two weeks ago. It looks like they fixed the problem.

well, for one thing, dumpster diving is illegal in most parts of the u.s. ... you prolly wouldn't get arrested for it, but if a cop sees you doing it he might chase you away.

and if the store is STRICTLY following the throw-away policy, they "destroy" the guide by tearing the cover off before throwing it away. i think most of us would MUCH rather have a book with a cover on it. :D

My local TRU had pulled all of the guides except for the Madden 06 in the Xbox 360 area. All the endcaps and the main shelves were void of the newest drops. I did ask about what this store did with them, and the cashier asked someone else and found they ship them all back.

I did walk out with two copies of the Madden 06 guide for me and a neighbor.

I grabbed a single copy of each(save for Star Wars Battlefront II, which seemed to be the only one both of my local stores couldn't remember having for months) of the new drops.

If anyone wants to know what Yugi-Oh guide was pennied, its Nightmare Troubador, as I cleaned out the Wilkes Barre, PA store of their 5 copies. I'm not even sure WHY, but I guess it's because I could probably trade them to local small game shops for another guide of my choosing, since Yugi-Oh is so popular still.

They had 7 copies of Madden 06 on their main guide rack in the front of the section, but as I brought up the guides that I wanted to be rung up the clerk said they would check for anymore copies and pull them.

Here's the weird part though, that Wilkes Barre store apparently has the policy that, if its ON the floor, I could buy as many as they had without getting 'we can't sell these'. Or, at least they did tonight, when I grabbed the ones I did, as I remember being denied during the last drop.

If I were still hoarding guides en masse, I could've probably walked out with close to 30 guides tonight.

Here's what I DID grab though(from memory):

5- Yugi-Oh Nightmare Troubador
1- Ratchet Deadlocked(sealed)
1- Jax X
1- NCAA Football 06

I noticed some more Madden 06 guides on a rack on the endcap of the one game aisle, but as I was walking out of the section, the clerk was going over to pull those too.

If someone has an extra Star Wars Battlefront II please CML. I was only able to nab a Ghost Recon: AW. Since I only got one I will consider multiple guide trades for it.

No one rips covers off anymore. Publishers used to require that the retailer rip the covers off and mail them back to receive credit for unsold books. Then everyone realized it was a lot easier to not waste time ripping and counting covers, and postage, and just report how many books were unsold. Thats standard-operating-procedure now.

EDIT: Thats what I get for using absolutes. I got it from an article about big brick and mortar stores ie Barnes & Nobles and Borders.

I just talked to a Gamecrazy manager less than a month ago and he showed me a large stack of pennied guides that were going to get their cover ripped off later that day. He said I could come back later if I wanted any of the guides w/o their covers before he dumped them. All the Game crazies in their district rip the covers and send them back to wherever. Not sure if it's Gamecrazy headquarters or the publisher.

Incidentally, I got the same info from an FYE store manager.

Maybe the publisher doesn't get the covers, but possibly store headquarters for accounting/legal purposes?

Added a ton of new guides to my TL from used bookstore clearance sales and some extra guides I got off eBay, some hard to find stuff like:

.hack Pts 1 - 3
Champions: Return to Arms
Jak II
Legend of Legaia
Legaia 2 (x2)
Shining Force Neo
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Super Mario RPG (SNES)
Mario 64
Xmen: Children of the Atom
Resident Evil: Director's Cut (Prima)
Castlevania N64: Legacy of Darknes

CML my trade list in my signature for the full list, pm if interested.
In for both...had to go with the shipping option, but it still isn't a bad deal!

Thanks!
Ditto here, though I doubt they'll ship. In-store pickup option for Titan Quest wasn't an option, though listed as in-stock at one store locally.

Are all guide deals required to go in here? I thought this was just for B&M. Wouldn't it be better to allow posts in the open forum so people don't miss the deal?

Does anyone think any other PC guides dropped to a penny today? The guide for Civilization IV isn't on the site anymore either.

Or Age of Empires 3.
