CAGiversary!

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2
BB.com emailed this: Local store said it wasn't found so I can't pick it up. I call BS.
After this, I started checking my order status and email frequently, and my order status just changed to "Order is ready for pick up" so I guess I got one.

Tempted to order another one under my gf's name and use it as trade fodder.

I managed to snag a TQ guide also...will pick up later today...I'm hoping I go there and they say they don't have it so I can tell the manager to give me ANY guide for .01 for making me waste the gas.

Then I'll go take the Oblivion guide to the counter :D

A man can dream, can't he?

And you can tell the manager that your friend, shieryda, is upset too. And you can make said manager give you an extra Oblivion guide for me!:D
Does anyone think any other PC guides dropped to a penny today? The guide for Civilization IV isn't on the site anymore either.

Or Age of Empires 3.
I thought AOE3 was pennied out a few months back...nevermind, I just remembered it was 1.99 at Gamestop.com.

Yea, I just saw it recently at BB as well.

I might do a price check on AoE 3 and Civ 4 once I go out to get my online order.

Expect it to be a copy of the game and not a copy of the guide. I had a problem with this a couple months back with the GTA: LCS PSP guides. Did an order for in-store pickup, had the confirmation information, and they pulled three copies of the game, not the guides. After I pointed it out to them, they went into the back and pulled the three guides I had ordered. Begrudingly, I'd bet.

Though, it might be the guide, and then again, it might be the game. Check it before you complete the transaction.

But would you havbe been charged .03 for the 3 copies of the game? i would've been tempted to call it a bank error in my favor

Well, I used some magic powers and got a copy of Titans Quest at the local store, so I'm not sure if I'll even drive the 15 minutes to Clearwater to pick up the two I have there on in store pickup (one was for me, one was trade fodder).

Unless a CAG really wants one and has something decent to offer for it I'll consider making the 15 - 20 minute drive. Might still go to check Civilization IV as my local store didn't have it at all.

It says the TQ is available in-store, but when I try to check out, it claims that there are none available. I hate that BB!

Snagged a TQ guide even though I don't have this game and normally don't play PC games. I ended up buying a Star Wars: EAW game however (my first PC title in years) because it was only $24.99.

My BB had like 4-5 more TQ guides sitting on the shelf. If anyone has any console guides they'd like to trade for the one I bought, give me a heads up.

Picked up some guides at a local used bookstore:

Klonoa 2 (x2) (Keeping 1 trading 1)
Suikoden Tactics (x2) (Keeping 1 trading 1)

I got TQ for .98 cents at CompUSA a while back, and have now added the guide for one penny more. Cheapest new game I've EVER bought.

The clerk was amused at the 0.01 that was going on my credit card.

But it was a smooth process. Think I got the last one in Oceanside, CA.
And here are some I got from EB/Gamestop:

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War
Full Spectrum Warrior Ten Hammers
Madden 06
Metal Gear Acid 2
Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition
Sid Meier's Civilization IV PC
Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic II: Sith Lords (Xbox)
The Outfit

Chronicles of Narnia needs to come off the penny list for EB/Gamestop & Fire Emblem Sacred Stones needs to come off the list for Gamecrazy. Both are ringing up full price at multiple locations for me.
Slade, I checked a KOTOR II guide at GS today and the guy told me it was $16.99. Did you have any trouble getting yours? I won't be surprised if it's not on the shelf tomorrow.

Also, if anybody can find a FSW: 10 Hammers at either GC or GS CML for a trade. I'll go 2-for-1 on any non-RPG guides. Thanks.

Age Of Empires III was pennied at EB/GS, I believe. But, I ALSO checked a copy of KOTOR II at EB/GS the other day and it did come up as $16.99

However, the GS I checked only had the copies with the DVD guide included, so maybe it was one that was just standalone?

As for Titan Quest's guide pennying out already, I thought that game just came out like 2 months ago? And, wouldn't it figure that I didn't have any other guides checked while I was at a couple BB stores the other night trying to find at least a Sims 2 guide.

Oh well, I'm sure by the time I get home tomorrow from the auction that my local stores will have ZERO left on the shelves.

Mine had the DVD too so that may be the difference.

I had 2 copies each of NCAA Football '06 and Ratchet: Deadlocked from the North Riverside TRU. I took them to the counter, the cashier rang them up (they came up at 0.01) and she said "I can't sell these to you." She even asked her manager, and she said the same thing. Seems this store is finally enforcing pulling the guides off the shelf to send them back.
Mine had the DVD too so that may be the difference.
Yep, that is the difference. It's the one without the DVD and it says Detailed Maps in the red strip on the spine. Sorry I was not more descriptive.

well I'm 50%...TQ was not available in store but did in fact ship yesterday (.01 for the guide and $2.49 shipping). SW:B2 went on backorder, expected to ship in 1-2 weeks. I expect this to die on the vine.

I'm happy, I'm about 10 hours into TQ and think it's great.

So did anyone check any of Best Buy's other PC guides?

And if anyone has an extra of Ace Combat Zero, CML, can trade a Titans Quest for it =/ I'm not even going to go around to EB / GS because they are becoming so strict about pulling them, its just a waste of gas.

we need a new thread or the front page should be updated more. I have not gotten a penny guide in 5 months and the only place I check now is Best Buy because I never know what places drop guides whether its Best Buy or Game stop or even EB.

I just think this thread(because everyone seems to be interested) should be a little more organized.

A revision is in process. It's not completed, and putting it out before it's complete won't do anyone any good.
Titan Quest guide is back up to $19.99 at Bestbuy.com. Sold out and no store available.
Huh... that's odd. Could it have been an error in their pricing systems for a day? Like someone said, it is weird they'd penny the guide out only two months or three months after it came out.

As a note, the last drop of guides showed up at $9.99 on the site, but were $0.01 in-store and on the kiosks in-store.

I work at Best Buy, so I'll give it a lookup tonight on the stores system. Wouldn't do much good for the store though, I grabbed the 3 copies of TQ we had last night:D

thanks for the update. It just seems I used to have a chance to aquire more guides but have not in a very long time. I would like to be able to look and check more at EB because they always have more of a selection but I can not check this forum every day hoping for a drop.

Snagged another TQ guide today at BB as well as found a Black and NFS: Most Wanted for a penny apiece as well. Dunno why these were on the shelves...maybe someone found em in the backroom and put them out.

Hey guys, just givin' a suggestion.

I work at GameStop, and I did a search for all guides that were priced at .01. We got something like 1135 in the search (however, PC game guides weren't among them, because they're a different category.
I'm pretty sure I could print all them out then physically send them to whoever's in charge of this list so they can compare/use it.
Although, I'm sure it'd be a LOT of paper...

I would think if you could do it by date, going back as far as Jan 06 would even be good since every once in a while a CAG comes across something older and might not know better. However, anything before Jan I would def consider useless.

Actually, this list is on the first page of the thread (that one was printed in March I believe). As stated above, is it possible to organize it by date??

the list that was printed for me on the front page was done by category. I dont know if it is possible to do by date. There is nothing on the full page that would suggest that. A list I had printed 2 years ago on an old EB system was done by price I was told but then again that was an old system. I am not fully aware of what the new combined system is capable of. hopefully REIBEATALL will be able to inform us of its capabilities.

Picked up all but Ratchet at TRU yesterday. The SWBFII guides had damaged covers, but I couldn't find them anywhere else.

Titan's Quest is 0.01 B&M at BB, YMMV. The Most Hated BB pulls console game guides before they drop to a penny, but leaves the PC guides on the shelves forever.

Unfortunately, there isn't a way to search by date. The list has games ranging as far back as Final Fantasy III guides for the SNES.

I'll check the system to see if I can shorten it up a bit to get rid of all the OLD ones. I'll be back tonight to let you guys know what's up with it.

Went to TRU yesterday & for the hell of it had the following scanned BUT ALL CAME UP AT REGULAR PRICE:

Ultimate Spiderman
Mario & Luigi Partners in Time
Gun
Xmen Legends 2
Need for speed most wanted

Thats because they were pennied out at Best Buy?

Actually, I think Mario & Luigi was an EB/GS penny guide, unless I completely forgot and they did so as well at BB.

Either way, I have at least one of each, so to that end, I'm happy.

Um, like i said i just did it for the hell of it. I didn't expect them to be 1cent but i noticed they were older games so i went ahead & had them scanned.

You made it seem like it was a big surprise.

"BUT ALL CAME UP AT REGULAR PRICE"

I noticed tonight at BB new guides for The Godfather clearly marked at the top "XBox 360 and PSP." They also still had the old ones and I had the old ones scanned but still $14.99. Just like with the GTA guides recently I'll bet the old Godfather guides will be pennied out next round.

i'm not sure if it has ever been suggested here, but there is a semi-accurate way to locate penny guides (if you already know which guides you want) at GS/EB via the item locator on GameStop.com. it won't be 100% accurate of course, 'cause there's always a possibility of mistakes. but anyway. you can find a lot of old product pages, which have been deleted from GS.com/EB.com, in google's cache... then just plug your zip code into the product locator on the cached page.

if the product page is not cached, but you can somehow find the URL of the deleted page, the URL contains the GS SKU number which you can swap into the URL of a different product's search result page (you can change the name of the item in the URL, too, if it helps you with bookmarking).

example:
- MGS 3 Snake Eater guide is no longer sold on GS.com.
- google's cache of GS.com's MGS 3 Snake Eater guide page.
- locations of MGS 3 Snake Eater guides at GS/EB stores in the NYC area.

the Snake Eater guide isn't that old, so the chance of finding it at one of the stores on the list isn't too bad.

here's an example for an item that IS pretty old. this is a little trickier, 'cause its product page isn't cached by google, so one would need to find an old link somewhere in order to obtain the GS SKU number and plug it into the GS.com product locator URL.
apparently there are a few EBs in the NYC area which might have Halo for Xbox guides available for $0.01. since this item is so old, YMMV by a lot. but if you're feeling lucky, it's nevertheless a clue about where to start looking.

a pretty similar trick can be used to find "deleted" products via BestBuy.com's product locator. google--> cached BB.com page--> check preferred store availability. as with the GS/EB product locator, YMMV of course. but it still gives you some idea of which store locations are most worthwhile (and which ones you prolly shouldn't even bother with).

this is an awesome idea. if only there was a simple way to do a all in one search or something. Still thank you for this idea.
