CAGiversary!

07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

For hopefully the latestest most current up to date guide drops please refer to the

"CAG Strategy Guide WIKI page"

http://wiki.cheapassgamer.com/index.php/Category:Strategy_Guides#Strategy_Guides

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.

Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!

How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.

Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Helpful links to check for reduced priced guides or guides in general. You will likely never find one cent guides here but various discounted guides and possibly some that you have been searching for.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. If anyone is interested and able to help please e-mail me at [email protected]. Thank you all for your consideration.

Thank you all for making CAG what it is and for all your contributions.

master list in post 2

hehehe. no problem.

in case anyone found that confusing & wonders how/why this works: the gist of it is, the GS.com and BB.com websites may no longer offer the products to you for online purchase, and if you try to find the products via the store's regular/normal search, it won't show you anything. however, google.com's snapshots (cache) of these "deleted" products' pages can easily be used to query the GS.com & BB.com servers for the products' locations (since they're still listed in the brick & mortar inventories).
Brainiac - this very cool, thanks.

How do you find a GS/BB/EB sku for an item your looking for though?
well... if the product page is cached on google.com, then you don't need to find the SKU number. you can just search for something like "game title + official + guide + site:gamestop.com." it's mostly for very old items that you're looking for, where you'd need to find the SKU number.

here's how i found the SKU for the Halo guide: http://www.google.com/search?q="halo+official"+guide+site:gamestop.com

if you click on the GS.com page linked from there and look near the bottom of the page, you'll see a link to a product page for the Halo guide. the product page no longer exists, but the dead link has the SKU number in the URL. 831055. then i inserted that number into the product locator URL.

you just need to know how to tease the info out of google. you can prolly also find some SKUs for old products by looking at archive.org's snapshots of old GS.com pages.

also: no need to look for EB SKUs separately, as EB now uses GS's SKUs, and all of EB's old SKUs are no longer valid. the GS.com product locator will tell you what they have at EB stores.

Hey thanks for this awesome idea... but it's hard to say how accurate this is... I looked for many guides that I know I have never seen in my dozens of GS/EB around me but this method shows many store to have them.

Just for fun I searched for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Limited Edition Official Strategy Guide near you (zip=10025) and found a few that have it, you might want to look into it to confrim?

http://www.gamestop.com/productavail.asp?miles=100&sku=831613&zip=10025

nearest one is at:

GameStop
Clifton Plaza
1006 Route 46 West
Clifton, NJ 07015
(973)473-3016

good luck!

clifton NJ isn't near me. i just picked the NYC area as an example. :p

i already said it isn't going to be completely 100% accurate. there's always a possibility that the store employees have removed/sold guides without properly deleting them from the inventory list. however i have used this method to find things from the latest round of penny-outs, and many that were pennied out months ago yet are still sitting on the shelves at some stores. i even used the product locator to find a Zelda Wind Waker prima guide, but unfortunately it rang up at full price despite being a few years old.

Nintendo tends to re-release their official nintendo power guides, such as the windwaker one, when the game goes player's choice. Kind of like a player's choice guide. Might be that one.

yeah i understand there are often nintendo power guides, and guides from other companies for the same game. i.e. there was a nintendo power wind waker guide & a prima wind waker guide, a nintendo power animal crossing guide & a prima animal crossing guide, etc. i definitely found the prima guide, though, which seems to be out-of-print (just looked at amazon.com, barnes&noble.com, etc). somehow it never got pennied out, i guess.

Thanks for the list.

I never scored a penny guide at Game Crazy before. Would they actually sell the penny guide for a penny? Or pull some shit saying it's not supposed to be for sale?

Ok guys, I've got a question.

I've got two stacks of printouts right now. One is the COMPLETE GameStop/EB Games penny guide list, something like 1200 items. The other is the more recent ones, which is closer to 400.

Chances are, I'm going to type up the 400 one. Should I compare it to what's already listed and just do the different ones, or just type the entire thing?

Why not cut and paste the current list and just add in whatever you have that is not listed?

That is a prety good idea.

I'm gonna get started on that.

Keep an eye on the original version Godfather guide at BB, folks, because there's supposed to be a new version coming out with the 360 and other new systems its on covered. It's looking like a GTA:LCS type of deal.

Just a heads up.

What's the deal with the Kameo guide? I didn't see it on BB's site, but when I tried to buy it today at a b&m store, it rang up at $9.99.

Probably due for a drop in Oct.

Anyone else notice that some BB stores completely stopped carrying the Halo 2 guide now? I noticed that a while back. And its funny, because whereas THEY stopped carrying it, my local EB/GS stores all seemed to get those 80 bajillion copies that BB once had in THEIR stores.

And, wasn't Kameo a release title for the 360? If so, that means that guide is OVERdue for a penny drop.

EDIT: At least the BB stores by ME have completely stopped carrying the Halo 2 guide, not sure about the rest of the country though.
I haven't seen Halo 2 guide at BB in a while either. They must have just pulled them.
I thought I saw some at my BB. Are they a penny yet?

Picked up the following .01 at EB today:

Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood
One Piece: Grand Battle
Stubbs The Zombie
Yugioh Nightmare Troubadour

All for trade

I picked up a couple of those Yugi-Oh guides at one of my local TRU stores. I was SHOCKED the clerk even let me have them. Hell, she told me I could take ALL the guides that were .01, but my major league guide hoarding days are over.

BTW, anyone need kindling for a campfire(guides), only $5 a brick. LOL j/k

And to 6669, no, BB hasn't pennied them yet, doubt they ever will either, as most of the BB's I've been to lately(locally) yanked all 40 bajillion copies they USED to have on their shelves. And, as I also stated, it seems that at the same time, my local GS/EB stores seemed to have acquired those copies. LOL

Picked up a Phantasy Star Online Ep. 1&2 (Gamecube/Xbox version) guide!!!

I'm looking to trade it for a Disgaea guide (pref lmtd ed). If there are any takers on trading, pm me. Any other offers would have to be seriously very very good.

I have a question. I've been tempted to due try to buy some penny ugides at my eb. I have a feeling the employees there will override the price with the normal price on the back. Has this ever happened to anyone?

Not at EB, but at Toys R Us. I slipped in a penny Ratchet guide with my FFXI purchase, and it displayed .01 in the monitor, but the cashier looked on the back and then re-entered the price to whatever it was on the back. I asked her what's up and she said she couldn't sell it for .01. I told her I had no interest in paying above what was in the system, and left it.
has gran turismo 4 been pennied out at ebgames/gamestop yet?
I'm not sure if there was traditional guide for it, but I picked up the hardcover "Experience" book a few months ago for a penny.

it has happen to be at eb.

Gran Turismo 4 (white with car on cover) was pennied out a while back. I think they only pennied it at one of the two stores before the merger, but since they're under one system now, it should definitely be a penny.

I've never seen it listed as a penny in this thread.

Can you upload it somewhere or email it to fellow CAGs?
it has happen to be at eb.
It's happened to me too, actually. And, if I had any intention upon buying a game or two along with those guides, I just leave everything and say 'no thanks'. I admit, I'm a devil customer anymore, who is only willing to buy games/guides when they're at the price I WANT TO PAY.

As I've said before, CAG has ruined me as a normal consumer for most stores anymore, as I always want a cheap ass deal.

i believe cashiers have lied to me about prices checks at a few different places (i.e. the system said $0.01, they tell me it's still full price... a few days later i come back to look around and notice that ALL of the guides i asked about are now gone, even though they had already been sitting around for MONTHS).

but i have NEVER had a cashier try to manually adjust the price. sometimes they scan it again to make sure it's not a mistake, sometimes they ask the manager if it's okay to sell, but they haven't tried to change the ring-up price. yes the cover price is the "official" MSRP, but guides can be marked down to lower prices, so (in most stores) the cashier doesn't have the authority to say yes or no the cover price is/isn't correct, he should go by what the store's computer (or the manager) tells him.

penny guides are almost done. Recently, employees and managers overrides .01 guides to make them anyware from full price to 75% of the price. One manager told me that too many ppl are picking up these guides for this price and any employee that's caught selling these guides will be fired. So far this only applies to EB/GS/GC employees. Bestbuy and TRU employees and managers are still clueless!!! :p

For me in SoCal the opposite is true. I have 2 TRUs that tell me they can't sell the guide if I try to buy one... and the employees doing this are usually older ladies that I KNOW aren't just wanting to hoard them for themselves.

All my EB/GS stores are cool about penny guides... one EB for some reason has to rip off the back cover before I can have it though. My only nearby GC never has penny guides. They have a lot of older guides that are on our list but they're in their system at full price... and I one of my really good friends works there so I know I'm not being jerked around.

Just letting you know...ripping off the covers and selling the guide is illegal, no matter what price they sell it at. Not like you are the one breaking the law, but its funny that they do that :applause:

just a guess, but i'm pretty sure his answer is going to be: that particular store tears the cover and gives him the guide for free, doesn't charge him the penny. that's the best explanation i can think of, anyway. :p

Added a ton of new guides to my trade list today (Xbox, PS2, GC).

**Edit - Salvaged them from a buddy who was going to toss them out, so just clarifying that these aren't necessarily pennied out. It's good to have gamer buddies**

All for trade like:

Dark Cloud 2
RE 4 (GC)
RE 4 (PS2)
Kingdom Hearts
Silent Hill 3
Drakengard 2
God of War
GTA (Double pack and San Andreas)
Radiata Stories
ShadowHearts: FTNW
Half Life 2
Fable
.....many more

CML and pm if interested

Yup. But I'd gladly pay the penny, or in some cases even a buck or 2 if I got to keep the back cover. My eyes got a little watery when I had to watch them rip the cover off my Final Fantasy IV guide.

Yeah, sux when they do that, I'd rather they dont give me the guide!

One of the GS person always does that, he is a fucken asshole. I just wait outside the shop until he goes on a break, then I rush in, grab all the guides I want, and the other cashiers usually just sell them to me :bouncy:

Good luck matey.

Actually I know my gamestop did get in trouble for the guides so now they can't sell em anymore. They used to either sell em at a penny or rip off cover and give me em for free. It kinda makes me cry looking at my mint Final Fantasy Anthology guide with 1/2 a cover but at least it was free.

Fixed it for your :)

Do you guys think Xenosaga Episode II's guide will drop soon? I know every EB and Gamestop around here has quite a few, probably because they expected the game to be a rock solid hit. Amazon has the limited edition guide for about $16, and I'd sure hate to have to use my $15 gift card and buy something else with some money to get it shipped free. Should I go for that? Should I wait? I could handle the normal guide if it's for a penny. Or ... would anyone want to sell me their limited edition guide for a $15 Amazon gift card? PM me if so.

I just got back from BB, and I got 3 strategy guides for 1 cent. My b/f didnt tell me how he did it, but he got 2 Titan Quest guides and 1 Auto Assault guide. I think it was some kinda special, like buy 3 PC games/items/whatever, get 2 free deal. I dont know how he did it, but I can provide the receipt if I need to.

BTW, both guides are up for trade. CML.
Lmao! you're right about that! Actually, I'd just rather salvage guides that are destined to the trash bin that's all. I am willing to trade the Xmen guides. I don't even have the game! I was just being a wiseass saying I got them after everyone was whining that their stores were wiped already. I really hate to see guides get thrown out and would rather save them. Oh and it's newbs like Kaniball that we do not need on here. Don't ever expect any trades with me dude. I don't care if you have the rarest game on the planet, I'd rather give my collection away than trade with someone that trashes me like that for no reason!:bomb:
The thing is, unless you know a store is going to pull them all quick, then taking them all will leave none for others.

Start checking your Target clearance... here is a list of guides I found today for $3.48. Sure, it's not a penny, but it's about as close as we'll get without a hassle. The drops are meh except for one awesome drop... here is everything I found, all $3.48:

Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence (awesome)
Sonic Riders
King Kong
GTA Liberty City Stories (PSP version)
X-Men Legends 2
Tony Hawk American Wasteland

I picked up an MGS 3 Subsistence for trade... I'm looking for mainly RPG guides, hit me up.
