07-10-06 Here should be most if not all of the recent drops since 3-31-06. Some possible dupes as this was kinda on the fly but taken from posts / first hand so should be fairly accurate. One exception to keep in mind is that EB / Gamestop are merging so that has the possibility of some inconsistency. Also in regards to that the EB/GS master list only has the one and two cent guides. If there was more that one version of a guide such as a limited edition guide (example: Xenosaga II) that was pennied the regularly guide might not have been. Unfortunately I have not had time to filter anything from the drop list since the first of the year (I think) into the master list but at least this should be what has dropped from 3-31-06 till present. Thank you all for all your additions they are much appreciated and sorry for any delays.

Here is the most up to date compiled list of all known guide deals listed and posted for this thread and similar threads. I will update this list as people post new guide deals. Everything listed in this thread “should” be the price listed or lower. These prices are typically company wide price reductions and not YMMV. But just because the prices are typically universal does not mean that they are guaranteed to be sold to you. Most stores have a destroy clause with the guide companies. So whether or not you get these guides depend on many many factors from how diligent a staff is to how reasonable or friendly one is. Good luck on any you may find and good luck on acquiring them. If anything is incorrect or missing please post so corrections can be made.


Now you can just cut, paste, print, and GO!!!



How you can help: You can keep a printed copy of this list in your jacket, wallet, purse whatever and when you go to any store that carries guides look for guides for games that have been out typically around six months or more and ask for a price check or better yet use a store scanner if they are available. If they are anything less than cover price write it down for us. Also please when you post the info here if it looks like it’s a temporary sale, please post that as well otherwise it will be assumed to a be a permanent price reduction. If you scan a guide and it comes up a different price that what the master lists suggests please list the day and store that you had the guide scanned. Also please list if you physically saw a self-scanner’s price, physically saw a cash registers price or vocally heard a price from the store’s staff. This might sound like a lot and of course we will take what we can get but this will go a long way to having the best master list as well as ferreting out different store practices and policy’s. All help is appreciated and thank you.




Trading: I spoke with the post office and found out that the cheapest form of mailing to the 48 contiguous states would be to use “media mail” It will take a little longer but it will also allow the least amount of money per transaction when trying to acquire guides for your collection. For an average guide weight of about 9 oz its $1.42 cents. All you need to do is put it in an envelope and ship it media mail. He mentioned no one should have a problem if you use the same envelope several times to cut down on costs. He also mentioned that when shipping Media mail that you cannot have any personal correspondence in the envelope. Only books and an invoice are acceptable. If trading is in you interest you do whatever is most comfortable for you and your trading party this was merely a FYI and a good way to keep it cheap.

Looking for assistance: I am looking for some staff from Best Buy’s, EB’s, Gamestop’s and stores of the like. When EB Games or Gamestop has a price reduction their shelves can be empty in a day or two to even as little as just a few hours. EB and Gamestop have daily price changes so all depending on the store’s staff they could be all gone almost immediately. If I could get some staff that can either post here first thing any day that they have a price reduction on guides or that might be able to text message me with such price reductions so that I might be able to inform CAG’ers ASAP. Whether or not us the end user would actually be able to get them from a particular stores staff is very much an YMMV but if there is anyone who can help this would greatly increase the chance’s of CAG’ers being able to pick up guides from these locations. I just got back from Best Buy, and I can confirm. It is a buy 3 video game guides, get $10 off deal. Instead of charging you negative $9.97, they just mark it down to one cent.

I was thouroughly impressed. Not only did my BB mark the penny guides as $.01 with a Best Buy sticker, the guy checking me out gave me no grief about buying three Titan Quest guides for a grand total of $.01 (tax included) :applause:

Hmmm but does it take $10 off your total order? That would be nice, find 3 penny guides and a $10 cd.....

The Best Buy in the west coast is not so generous about pennied guides. They pull them at the fastest rate they can. They would never put an actual $0.01 price sticker on any guide. They would rather send them back or destroy them.

Ok, that must be it. Somehow my b/f knew about it, but wouldn't tell me. He just bet me he could walk out with 3 guides for only 1 penny. I lost the bet :(
 
I saw a FFVIII guide at a GC one time about a month back... I asked what the price was, he said $15... do you think he lied about that? I wouldn't think a guide from 1998 would still be full price... I haven't checked if it's gone yet....

I've found both FFVII and FFVIII at GC in the last few months. I had them both priced checked and they were indeed full price.

My local Best Buy said they sold out of Kameo guides a while back and that they 'aren't getting anymore', which leads me to believe that one may FINALLY drop. I had a couple guides checked, including the older Godfather guide, which hadn't dropped by anything but $5 in the system.

I kind of figured that, like the LCS guide, when a new version came out, the old one would be pennied.

I'm also kind of hoping Tomb Raider Legend pennies soon, as my BB has one copy I've been watching for a while.

Did anyone ever figure out why it seems some BB stores made their stacks of Halo 2 guides disappear, after being $9.99 for months(and never dropping)?

Checked out Circuit City earlier today I had the cashier scan a Zelda Four Swords guide and a Battalion Wars guide the Zelda FS guide did not come up in their system she told me it was not for sale the Battalion Wars guide rang up for $6.96 I did not buy it.

The guide is by Brady - I don't believe that there was another made by a different publisher.

My guess is that they are using them instead of cinder blocks for the new BB they are building nearby. It was probably cheaper to use stacks of Halo 2 guides.... they had enough to do it.
 
First Monday of the month is coming up, possibly meaning new Best Buy drops. Not that they won't all get pulled, but anyway, some possibilities might be Hitman blood money, The Godfather, Tomb Raider Legend..? Though BB are pretty unpredictable lately.

(30 guides listed on the BB site as of Sat night)
 
Well, my BB still marked em as of last drop (I didn't bother to go for the main drop, but I picked up a Titan Quest w/ a penny sticker on it.) So hopefully, they should have something. Hopefully I can stop by on Monday and see what I can see.

IDK about other guides, but Kameo is gone from the BB site (I know it was at 10 bucks, so hope this means its a penny tomorrow)

Saints Row guide is gone too... but I'm not sure if that means its pennied out, its way too early.

Dosen't look like alot is missing to me, other than Kameo.

Whoa! I'd love a penny Saint's Row guide :)

But yeah, just because its gone from the site, doesn't mean its pennied out. The Halo 2 guide wasn't on the site for over a year but was still full price in store. Just checked the BB site now, and there are some bizarre 'sale' prices, as far as I can tell some of them have been reduced...by less than a dollar!

And finally, the PS2/Xbox original version of the Godfather strategy guide might have a drop, as there is a new 360/PSP version of the guide out.
 
ANYONE go on BB's site recently? They're having a 'sale' on most guides, though its only by maybe .50 to a dollar or two. And some guides(Guild Wars Factions, for one) doesn't have ANY sale listed on it.

Though, there is at least one(Madden 07) that is listed twice, once with its sale price, once normally.

Weird 'sale', if you ask me. Either way, I kind of expected the older Godfather guide to drop to .01 soon @ BB, since the 360/PSP version came out, but with their pulling of guides so quick anymore, good luck getting one.

I have a question regarding $.01-priced guides. I went to Best Buy last week and they had one copy of the Mario & Luigi Partners in Time strategy guide priced at $.01 and another priced at (can't remember, around $15). I figured the $.01 price tag was a mistake and they wouldn't honor it since I didn't think they would sell guides that cheap :roll: :bomb: .

If they have two copies of the same item with two different price tags, do they honor the price tag of the cheaper item?

In this case the penny tag is correct (since it is pennied, the $15 was the old price), but even if the $15 tag were newer, they'd have to sell it for a penny in those same states.

They honor what rings up on their computer screen. If something is mismarked at a penny and it rings up $15 they might honor the penny - but they wouldn't let you buy more than one if thats what you mean.

They don't look at the price tag, they scan it and it rings up a penny automatically.
 
Checked Saints Row, New Super Mario Bros., and for the hell of it, Oblivion (by the gods I want that guide to drop). All came up full price.

Found another Titan Quest guide though, up for trade. No Kameo's to be found so I couldn't check that.

sweet, I hid a kameo guide the other day hoping this would happen. Now I just have to hope it's still there.
 
Kameo and the newer LCS guide? Eh, it's always the crappy ones that seem to drop lately or the ones the stores haven't had in a while.

I was kinda expecting the Godfather guide(original) to drop, now that the 360/psp one is out.

Either way, this is a meh for me.

And Roufuss, I've been in the local 2 Best Buys so frequently in recent months, but the employees just don't seem to have the time to 'become friends'. There's always one or two customers besides me distracting them, though I have had a couple real long conversations with a few about games.

It's good to know these stores aren't just hiring people off the street, but someone who might actually KNOW something about the items they're in charge of selling.

I doubt by the time I get to my local BB today they will have any LCS guides left and they had NONE of the Kameo ones for at least 2-3 weeks or MORE, so this drop is again a case of me being SOL.
 
I'll have to swing by best buy on my way home. I wouldnt mind a kameo guide if they have any left but i'm not gonna worry if I can't get one.

The original Godfather guide dropped as well (at Best Buy).
 
I finally watched the DVD that came with God of War guide..( which I got for cheap.. Thanks CAG ). I loved the walkthrough and the secrets.. hahah.. Some of the extra costumes were hilarious..:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Found a Kameo behind a bunch of other guides. Seems like they missed it when they pulled the others because there was no sign of anything else.
 
Thanks, gonna have to see if my friend at BB can score me a Kameo before she goes home for the day... the locator says there are none in the store but I just saw some the other day.
 
Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to stop by the store later. I finally dug around, and also saw where they keep the PC guides. I think I saw some definite penny ones. Were Oblivion, Assault Auto and Titan? pennied out? May just pick them up for trade.

If you want the Oblivion guide, just buy it. It won't be pennied out for years if at all. Heck, the Morrowind guide continues to sell well at BB at full price.

Might pick up a Kameo if I feel like it. Otherwise I already have the previous LCS guide and aside from a UPC and boarder color difference, the newer one has the exact same content from what I could tell.
